Finally got the OTA for my Moto G and it appears you can swap Dalvik for ART. Has anyone tried it and seen a difference?
Tried doing it with my Gnex but it borked it (was one an incompatible ROM).

I'm using ART. All apps are working, no problem yet. One thing — I marked increase time of apps installing, and it's normal ART's feathure. General impression that ART+KitKat working faster and more smoothly than JB+Dalvik
Yes art here as well. Noticeable speed improvement across every aspect of ui

May I ask if the apps you have installed use more RAM while they are running?
Has you installed any system monitor apps and compared the RAM usage on some of the apps that you have installed?

Google's developers promise faster and more efficient execution, better battery life, and a more fluid experience.
Xposed or ART?
So if you have to choose between ART and Xposed, what would you prefere at this stage?
My G has still not arrived yet, have to wait till January to test it but that's a question what bugs me.
I've had very similar experiences switching to Android Runtime with both my N4 and Moto G. My biggest perception is that there is a decrease in the load time of most apps. Once an app is running, I'm not sure that it is any smoother then under dalvik, however, I certainly don't notice and any lagging with either model. One thing I have observed with the N4 but so far not yet with the Moto G is a slight decrease in battery life when running under ART.

No brainer to me, I stick with Xposed (I want Xprivacy and Gravity Box).
I tried ART briefly on my Nexus 7 2013 and the performance impact was not even measurable in benchmarks. I do however believe that this will change with further updates to ART.
I have ART enabled and use xposed along with all of my normal modules. No need to choose.

That would definitely happen - it has no need to run JIT first. I am wondering, did you run Antutu on ART?
I had to disable ART.. phone was acting up and some apps I use don't work with it. Might try to enable it again when I have time to mess around with it

Hi
I've allready configured everything I can with Stock rom and I've installed Linaro / Franco kernel. It seem good. Now, I just want to talk about your own experience to improve battery life with Nexus.
I want to switch to ART, but Google's message is clear : "Warning!"
Does it change something? Have you tested long enough to verify that it works well?
I still have important battery drain and I will study everything I can to improve experience with this fantastic device !

Hello, I have been using ART since a week now and I have never had any major issues.
Some issues I had were:
Apps gets closed when you open them (just retry)
GUI bugs with Any.Do

battery life is determined by your personal usage, your person setup, your personal method of app management, and most importantly battery life is determined by the quality of your personal data/phone signal. everything else, including undervolting, only provides negligible results. thats why no matter what rom you are running, no matter what kernel you are running, no matter if you are using dalvik or ART, there are people that will say that it gives them great battery life while others say it doesnt give them great battery life.
Hi guys
Im coming from a N4. Is anyone using ART and is everything working?

Hi!
I'm using it and everything is working great.
The apps open faster, the UI is more fluid. Regarding the battery, everybody say that the battery performance is better but I haven't experience this, I mean the battery was great before 4.4.2 and now is as good as it used to be.
One problem I have, but is not related to ART I think, is that when you pull down the notifications menu when the phone is blocked, the animation laggs a lot. But as I said, this happens when you are using Dalvik too I think.
Not until (if ever) Xposed Framework supports it.
I am using art and it is ok! I dont know if it is better from dalvik!

Yes root...regarding Xposed supporting ART
The only point ART was added in Kitkat was to show to the developers that google is preety serious about using ART in their next builds so they better get working in making their apps compatible before android ditches dalvik altogether...so am sure xposed will support it....sooner not later

I'm running stock Motorola Camera app. After updating KITKAT my apps are optimized to run under dalvik, then I manually changed to ART and optimization ran for 15 mins and then I rebooted the device.
I tried it and switched back to Dalvik, because of app incompatibilities. Many games like Asphalt 8 and Deer Hunter stopped working after the switch to ART.
Has anyone tried enabling ART instead of Dalvik? Any bugs?
Does it run smoothly?
Any noticable changes?
What about future full CyanogenMod integration?
Worked fine on my first OPO and I'll enable it when I get home with my second
So no bugs or errors!?
Did your battery life improve significantly?
Art doesn't improve battery life. It may or may not, but if it does its insignificant.
Wakelock and cell reception is more or less the percentage that contributes to battery life.

So, I switched to ART. I was like 147 apps for the device to optimize on reboot so that took a while. Other than that, everything seems to work great. Some micro stutters in Chrome seem to be gone.

Update: Torch does not seem to work properly. When in Camera flash works fine. But torch doesn't.

I don't have an Opo yet, but the effect looks the same in my s4. It gets warmer when updating apps (if you have a lot or big sized ones). I don't feel any incompatibility except for xposed / some old cctv apps. Torch works properly.

I thought I'd try switching to the ART runtime cause I read a lot of places that it's faster/better battery etc. A few bugs that I encountered were:
Lock Screen/Power Button doesn't work.
The Hardware Navigation Buttons (Back, Menu, Home) don't get the backlight (they do work though).
This is a brand new OnePlus One, haven't installed much apps. I had to switch back to the Dalvik.
I refuse to until theres some sort of xposed framework or keepchat alternative that supports ART
I love ART! It's so smooth.
dalvik feels just so much worse lol. ART is super stable and fast.
Hi guys
I am currently using DALVIK (because of xposed framework), but then I researched it about ART and many people said ART is much faster.
1st, Before installing xposed framework, I was using ART, but then xposed change to dalvik automatically. Can i switch it back to ART? Does it cause problem switching back and forth?
2nd, does ART save more battery?
3rd, Is it worth to keep dalvik (with xposed) with ART is faster?
Let me know
Thanks.

1. Questions belong in Q&A
2. Xposed involves hooking the Just-In-Time nature of Dalvik
3. ART is mostly Ahead-Of-Time rather than Just-In-Time
4. Therefore Xposed is incompatible with ART, and will switch you back to Dalvik to prevent a bootloop
5. ART theoretically uses less battery via being less CPU-intensive (Ahead-Of-Time compilation rather than Just-In-Time), but the experience varies for different people

Honestly, I can barely notice a difference between ART and Dalvik, if there even is one. Some people claim that ART is much faster but I don't buy it at all. It may perform better in certain situations but it's certainly not as profound a difference as some people make it out to be. It's definitely not worth losing Xposed over, that's for sure

Yeah, Xposed is amazing. No need for custom ROMs anymore. All 3 of my Android devices (2014 Moto X, Nexus 5, 2013 Nexus 7) run stock Android + Xposed. There's just so much stuff you can do with it that even if ART was a lot faster, I'd still stick with Dalvik. All my devices are plenty fast already so the ability to customize is far more important than gaining a few milliseconds here and there. I'm staying on KitKat as long as I possibly can.

Yeah, I have lollipop on my N5 as a secondary ROM with multiROM and honestly I have no clue why some people love it as much as they do. But that's a whole different conversation.
Anyway, my Xposed modules-
GravityBox- the Swiss Army knife of Xposed modules
BootManager- Easy control of startup apps
ChromePie- adds an AOSP browser style PIE control to Chrome
MinMinGuard- the holy grail of ad blockers
AppOppsXposed- adds AppOpps to the stock settings menu
Chrome New Tab- opens all Chrome links in a new tab automatically
Notification Mod- let's you pull down the notification shade in the lockscreen
Network Speed Indicator- adds a DL/UL meter to the status bar
Nexus Navbars- has a bunch of custom navbars
What mods are you using?

Regards.
Can't help you as I don't have the 5.1.1 ROM yet, but have no lag on 5.0.2. The other thing is, lag is subjective. The Moto X 2014 certainly does lag on certain actions such as facebook etc.
If you haven't already, after a ROM update it's always usefull to factory reset if you've backed everything up.
5.1.1 runs nearly equal to 5.0.2 on power saving mode .. mainly the effect is on scrolling. I always used 5.0.2 on power saving as it would suffice
Ok, ill try a factory reset again in 5.1.1
Thankyou
I had minimal lag and decent battery life on 5.0.2. Upgraded to 5.1.1 and that all changed. Scrolling lag, terrible stand by drain... And I factory reset after upgrading.

Same observation here. The new Material theme makes the scrolling worse on 5.1.1 and also a few other themes does the same detriment to UI fluidity. I had downloaded like 12 different themes and now deleting one by one after testing them out and keeping only those which do not affect fluidity...
I'm not even using Samsung Launcher.. Nova Launcher ftw
No lag out of the ordinary on 5.0.2... Haven't received the new OTA yet
I've found the same - themes can cause noticeable lag.
Package Disabler Pro totally works with 5.1.1. I only have a weird bug with Hangouts.apk, but you can disable this app via the traditional manager so thats not a problem.
About the lags and so, i also have some from time to time. I'd say the overall butterness feeling is lower than what i used to have with my Nexus 5 (+ franco kernel and a great rom). I noticed some real laggy actions with both 5.0.2 and 5.1.1.
BTW Knox is a real pain in the ass. Denying you all hardware warranty just because you changed the ROM or recovery is lame.

Although it's only $1.50, I don't want to spend money on an app just to test it.
Also, reverting to the stock theme instead of the new "material" theme has seemed to help my lag issue a bit.

Thanks for testing this as my S6 duos not yet received 5.1.1 and since xposed not supported S6 yet the Greenify isn't working out fully on S6. Package Disabler Pro is the only one who can replace Greenify now until xposed supports 64bit OS.

What is worth disabling besides what the regular application manager allows?

Bloatware installed by Samsung. Some of those apps you will never use actually start themselves in the background. Just go see by yourself in your running apps manager.
The app also help you to debloat by colouring known "useless" apps (by useless, I mean nor the phone or the system need them to operate properly)

It is not lame as custem ROM can cause overheating or to high voltage on some sensitive parts that can easily burn and then when phone is usuble but some part doesn't work there is no certen way of determining how it got broken in the first palace and it is more easily blamed on root and custom recovery's...

I HAD to click "thanks" for this, you actually made me smile. Sure, sure, custom roms do burn phones ;-p
Well, i guess you said that seriously. Modern CPUs in our phones (just as those in our computers since the Core series) are very well protected against oveheating and will nearly NEVER burn or damage themselves nor the circuitry around. You may unlock FSB or change voltage as you want if you changed the kernel (not your average root user though), HW will always be protected since the device will stop operating itself immediately if it is too hot. Only thing that may happen if your not-so-average root user is also stupid enough, is not being able to reboot the device himself if risky settings (like very low voltage) are set to boot with without testing. Big deal, since you have access to a custom recovery to change that anyway.

I tend to stay away from root as possible as I am not really experienced enough ... And I hardly find a good tutorial that is really conclusive ... On the other hand every phone I had was chosen because I liked all of the aspects of it ... So I really never had the need for root ... And not to mention one experience when one time I did root ... And it was with S4 ... And in the end it was extremely close to having phone that dose not work ...and bad experience in all that is actually that phone was working as it should before rooting and after it never really did work good ...

Pretty choppy indeed. I guess that depends what you are used to though. Considering the hardware there is no reason to worry, this slugginess will probably be cured soon (via samsung updates or custom roms). But i never suspected my good old nexus 5 would actually be more fluid even at start.
