KitKat Bugs? - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone notice scrolling w/in apps seems to look a bit choppy. I mean its still quite responsive just looks horrible. Any thoughts on how to remedy it
Also what other bugs are you seeing? Besides home button one.
Sent From My KitKat Ultra

Idk if I would say scrolling is choppy but I'd say that 4.2.2 might have just been just a miniscule bit more snappy than 4.4 is...
Benchmark scores (as unreliable as they are) would seem to verify this as my phone scores just a tad lower on almost every benchmark than it did on 4.2.2

Also having some choppiness in apps that I didn't have before. Hopefully some performance updates are in the works.

I have a bug, when I open my app drawer and scroll through the widgets once I hit the third page it is turns the screen off, every time

USB tethering with easy tether no longer works.
Just had Dolphin Browser/OS completely lock up.
After restarting the phone and clearing cache from recovery I received a bunch of emails from Outlook which had arrived around noon without updating.
Dolphin browser, when scrolling a page flashes a white screen but that may be dolphin and not OS related.
If anyone is on the fence for this update, best to wait for a better build.

Good build
There is absolutely nothing wrong with this build, at least nothing rising to a known or systemic problem that I'm aware of. It's a pretty damn good build...one question / variable would be; how many of you are on the ART runtime?

My battery saver toggles itself off after a reboot. Anyone else? That's all I can think of.

I use ART. Also tried with Dalvik.

That sucks...I am having one problem now...Titanium is FC on launch...haven't heard back from them yet on known issue or not. I know they were having problems with ART in the past version.

Anyone having issues with the app registering touches on the screen? It's extremely random. Sometimes it registers just fine, but other times it has no idea where I'm touching.

Yeah that happens to me a lot. Usually locking then unlocking the phone fixes it.

Sounds like the usual N1 screen inaccuracy issues. As above, screen off/on is the only cure.
There are no other apps that experience this bad of an issue. Hopefully twitter releases a fix.

The new twitter is pretty buggy still. A recent update fixed some of the bigger ones though.

Tapatalk runs like garbage on VZW s3, anyone else?

It gets to the point where I can't scroll down it lags so bad and then it eventually force closes. I've only heard one other person complain of this same issue with a semi solution of force closing it and clearing out cache in app manager, but it happens so frequently now. Ugh. Anyone else have this problem and maybe a possible solution?
yeah my xda app does the same thing (tapatalk hosted I think) I was wondering the same thing.

Ran like crap on my Inc with ICS too. Just installed today's update of XDS, hopefully it's better.

Yes this is a dupe, something isn't coded properly in the app it seems. Hopefully the last update fixed it, I haven't had any issues since the update.
Edit: update did not fix it, mine just started lagging again.

Mine works great, even on pic heavy threads.
I've had the last 2 or 3 rapid fire updates. But I haven't had any issues w/ tapatalk ever.
Tapatalk has been ****ty for the last few weeks. The most recent update seems to have cured most issues, although I have the occasional lockup still.
Def not a gs3 problem though. My note and razr do the same thing.

Seems like when I ask it to do something before it's finished loading, it crashes.
Other than testing my patience, it's chugging along just fine for me. I rarely use it though.
It's the app and not our phones. Same thing happens on Nexus 7 using Jelly bean, which is super smooth in every other app. I'm half tempted to just use the website but XDA is a pretty heavy Site.

Didn't have any of these problems. I edited the app name so that it wouldn't bug me for updates and I've been a happy camper since!

Tapatalk = garbage. Xda needs to get a mobile site so we don't have to use this trash.
When this starts happening, I suggest you go to the applicationxmanager and clear the cache for tapatalk. Clearing the cache has considerably helped the app perform fadter and smoother overall.

[Q] Does anyone's S3 stutter (like it's laggy) during multitasking?

I have a Verizon S3 and it has choppy animations when switching between apps using the recent apps menu. I've tried turning both animation and transition options to off in the dev menu and it will still sometimes flicker when swapping apps.
Also, the multitasking recent apps menu itself has always been choppy, which is really frustrating. I know touchwiz isn't the best, but I never thought the phone would be this choppy. The phone itself isn't really slow, it's just the fade in / fade out animation / draw time of the recent apps menu is TERRIBLE.
Things I've done to test:
Power saving is always off. I tried turning it on and unchecking the cpu throttling, but no dice.
Tested with brightness set to auto and not auto, but no dice.
Quadrant score was in the low 5000s, which I believe is good.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is this normal, or a sign of a defective phone? Thanks!
For the app switcher, mine hasn't been slow very often unless I'm dealing with Chrome. I have my "Window Animations Scale" set to: .5x so maybe that helps for the app switcher. I have all my transitions set to .5x actually.
I why I personally haven't noticed is cuz I dislike the implementation of the app switcher. I don't use it often unless switching from texting to Web browsing. I've used my mom's Nexus a few times and it's a smarter UI decision there. Holding the home button to activate the app switcher just feels like a step down to GB.

Thanks for the info. I seem to use my mine pretty often. I'm mainly trying to figure out if this is a known bug with touchwhiz (or if this is just how touchwhiz is), or if it's something wrong with the hardware and I need to return it for another phone.
I've also had some odd lag with the notification menu opening and closing, which only began happening in the past week or so.
What do you guys think?
Do you have the "force gpu rendering" box checked? If so uncheck it. I always get choppy when I have that checked.

While I've tried a factory reset in the past, I didn't know about the recovery menu for non root before. I backed everything up, booted into that, cleared the system cache and then rebooted (triggering the factory reset). I skipped everything during setup and then restored only my Google account, and now everything is silky smooth. The recent apps menu is consistently smooth as well.
Thanks everyone! Hopefully it stays this way.

After playing with it for few days, it's still very smooth when you bring up the recent apps menu and click through to an open app. It's kind of sluggish when opening the menu when you're already in an app. Anyone else seeing that?

It was like that when I was on TW. It runs at like 6 fps and it's extremely disappointing that a badass phone like this would lag there. I read that the recents menu isn't HW accelerated on TW ICS? It's completely smooth on cm10.

Killing apps is it worth it??

I have a bad habit of frequently clearing all apps from my recents
I somewhere read that it's not good (can't remember where)
So is it worth killing apps frequently ?? Does this effect battery life too??
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Hi,
I would say you "kill" multitasking...
...which is actually not good, because opening an app that is already in the phones RAM loads much faster plus it doesn't consume that much battery juice
Just leave em. Don't be obsessed with closing stuff all the time
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Apps running in your multi tasking window still drain some battery. Even Google suggests closing them if you're not using them, to extend battery life.
Launching apps doesn't doesn't spike my current widget readings so I don't think much battery is used there. I've noticed rebooting the phone does cause huge spikes though so try and only do that while plugged in.

This topic has been debated again and again. It makes no tangible difference in battery life. If you want to swipe your apps, go ahead and swipe them. You will never see a difference in battery. And that's because there isn't one.
I notice that if I don't reboot my N5 for a long time, my available RAM goes down to <150mb regardless of what I close. Does it sound like I have a bad app?

Usually its best to just keep pressing the back button repeatedly to exit an app and let it be in the recents. I read that just swiping the app off the Recent doesn't completely exit the app and there's still some background process that will be running for some time.

[Q] Google search update lag

I have had a look online to see if others are having my problem but can't seem to find anything on it so thought i would ask here.
A few months back i created a thread regarding lag issues on my nexus 5 more specifically app drawer opening/closing lag, well after flashing back to stock, unrooting and factory resetting a few times the lag was still there UNTIL i turned off auto update apps and the lag dissapeared so i figured it must be an app so after a while of trying to find out which one it is i found out it was the updated google search causing the lag for some reason so i uninstalled the updates and the lag dissapeared and now i have had auto update off for a couple of months.
Well now i want to turn auto update all apps on again and update the google search app to get ok google again but again after updating the lags back so had to delete it once again, anyone got any ideas on why this is happening? I have already tried rebooting the phone which didn't make a difference so i wiped dalvik and cache again this didn't make any difference

Yes the lag is there when opening and closing the app drawer. The only google service that causes this is the google search app, when i uninstall it through play store it just uninstalls the updates so i lose the ok google hotword feature but the lag is completely gone and the phone is buttery smooth, as soon as i update it again the lag starts.
I'm on a rooted nexus 5 4.4.2 running a stable release of faux kernel that's it everything else is stock

Can you switch to ART and see if the problem persist? If you are not comfortable switching, you could flash the Dalvik+Bionic library optimization. I found it very smooth, compared to stock Dalvik.
Also, scale down Windows animation and Transition animation to .5x in developer options.

That's a crude way of putting it, but yes. In a way we're all trying to mask our phone's shortcomings. Seeing that even though we all have the same phones, yet some are better than others, some encounter more problems than others, some have better battery life than others. You can't come in here and expect your phone to be perfect with no problems. Sometimes we find a fix, sometimes we find a workaround. It's hard to pinpoint the problem without much in-depth troubleshooting, but if it "fixes" the problem, than that should be sufficient for now right?
(damn I feel like a philosopher)

If that was the case, this whole forum would not exist. Every phone is different, even if they're the same model. We tweak it and mod it to our liking, and we never stop trying to bring it to its optimum ability.
Yes ART is unstable to some apps and mods. Before rooting my phone, I was on ART for a few months on stock. It was very smooth, and surprisingly didn't have any incompatibility issues. After root, in order to have Xposed, I had to switch to Dalvik. There was definitely some lag issues. I also experienced them with the app drawer, similar to yours. But to circumvent that, I flashed the Dalvik+Bionic libraries and it was as smooth, if not smoother, than it was while I was on stock ART.

So your saying that let's say we both bought the same phone in this case the nexus 5 and when we turn it on it's brand new so nothing installed on it yet but one phone has lag but the other is as smooth as butter would you consider that perfectly normal or would you think something is wrong?
I have been running ART for a few hours now and unfortunately the lag is still there, once i uninstall the google search app updates it goes back to being as smooth as butter same as when i was on dalvik but like dalvik once i install it again the lag comes back
