sprint connection issues - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Gonna stick to my backup stock +root for now. Seems like every ROM I flash my data connection either goes in and out or is weaker and that's with the sprint fix that I flash after the ROM. I live in Vegas and I don't think the sprint network is strong in this area. The Roms in general are awesome only issue is my sprint data connection. So for now I guess I'll be going back to my stock backup so I can at least have a decent steady connection.

EVO SHift 3G Network question

I don't have cable internet where i live due to the fact i travel to and from class way to much to use it. I tethered my phone via wireless or usb to my computer and run off of the 3g network speeds. I currently switch between CM7 and then new EVO Shift 2.3.3 leaked GB Test ROM. I noticed that i have 57% signal according to opensignal and when i download anything or load web pages they are very slow no matter how many bars i have. My download speeds are usually around 20kbps to 55kbps max Is there anything i can do to increase the net speed of my 3G connection? Or is there a app on the market place that i can use to improve or some how boost my 3g network speeds.
I've noticed a little bit slower speeds using the Gingerbread leak but nothing as slow as what you are experiencing. Have you tried the fix from this thread? [FIX] 3G Upload & Download Speeds
Sprints network for Michigan, Ohio and all its surrounding states flat out sucks I get them speeds daily and all Sprint keeps doing is knocking 20 and 50 off my bills, I don't care about money off they either need to fix their network or that roam controlling app is going to get me out of contract etf free I don't care to pay good money for good service but when I pay 160 a month for 2 lines I would expect to be getting the 3G Sprint lies and says I get,

Yea, know what you mean. I've called them several times here in Michigan. All they do is tell me is "we're working on the network to improve call quality and internet service" . Same answer almost everytime.

Have you flashed the new radio found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1082192 its the radio that came out with the gingerbread ruu. I had the same issue. I was using the old radio on the new roms and my 3g speeds where about 50-90 kbps then upgraded the new radio now I'm getting on average anywhere between 300-700kbps

Ah is that what it was. I flashed a new rom the other day with the sense 2.1 and everything was cool except the 3g data speed. It was taking 5-10 minutes to download a 1mb file so I had to restore my other rom lol. My normal 3g data speeds are over 1mbps which is super fast. I couldnt even browse the web with the leaked build, it was ridiculous.

Wow when mine hit 700 kbps I thought that was fast. I came from T-Mobile and was getting 2-3mbps on their 3g also my girlfriend uses Comcast to go which uses the Sprint towers for the service and she gets 1.5 to 3 mbps speeds

hey
going to try what one do you guys do "1.17.651.1 RUU (Stock):" or 2.72.651.2 RUU: i dont have 4g here
i believe 1.17.651.1 ruu is the stock version that's already on your phone, for people that want to flash back to stock settings if the new radio fails to perform. you should flash to 2.72.651.2 if you want an attempt at an upgrade. personally, it did nothing on my end for the internet, but voice calls did slightly improve. i encountered problems too, where it would hang on the htc splash screen. i don't have an sd card adapter... so i had to put my micro in my old htc hero, run that as a mass storage unit, delete PG06IMG from the computer, boot into bootloader, delete everything, clean cache, davilk (i think that's what it's called), and re-load from nandroid backup. after that i saw 1.08... in about phone, baseband version so i guess i was successful lol. pain in the ass, but will further test it later outside and stuff... once the heat drops down over her in n.y. :]
Besides the fact that my 3G speeds crawl. My 4G is SLOWER on occaison than my 3G. Lol, why is this and how can I fix? It all started when I first flashed cm7

Sprint Mikshifted 2.1
I was wondering the number i had to enter to access the network settings for the mikshifted 2.1 mod. I tried to enter ##3282# and no luck with that . I noticed that my 3g speeds were 20kbps and its horrible lol. Have flashed the new radio on a previous version of CM7 and Kingdom 3.0 rom and didn't work so hot for me. Anyone have any recommendations?

[Q] Fringe 4g data drop - wtf?

I live in an area mostly covered by "4g" LTE. My charge will sometimes connect to LTE in my bedroom, but most of the time it can't. Every time it briefly connects to 4g in my home, however, it does not hand back off to 3g for a good 5 minutes or so. Instead, I lose all data connectivity. I've tried turning data mode off then back on, but it doesn't work. After about 5 minutes or so with no data signal, it'll reconnect to 3g. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Is there a way to fix it without just turning the LTE off (switching to CDMA only)? I get LTE in most areas around my house but apparently I live in a Faraday cage or black hole or something.
This is a 100% stock ROM, not rooted, never flashed any new ROMs or Modems.
Man, I have the same issue. I feel ur pain. I was downloading files on 4G and at around 34 percent, it cut out and went on 1x. Stayed there. And I was outside in a wide open spot. It happens man, I was told there's something wrong that causes the data signal cycling like that. I've tried what u tried also. If u can get a straight answer, let me know too lol. And to top it all off, HORRIBLE BATTERY LIFE.

The handoff process from LTE to CDMA is still pretty cagey. Fortunately, it's mostly software, so updates should help this process.
I haven't done any research on whether EP1F or EP1H (the leaked Gingerbread builds) are any better at it, but I would have to assume that it's part of the process they're working on with modem updates, etc.

when i was with ep1f the radio worked better for me. i was able to connect more frequently to 4g and switching was hassle free (no time outs). it's possible that the problem is on verizon's side since my cousin, who's on stock, is having the same problems in an entirely 4g area.
You might have a ****ty SIM card.
When I first got my Charge it was very similar to your situation. I had poor 4G connectivity in my supposed "fringe" area. Then a week ago it was losing connectivity from 4G to 3G and eventually stopped getting 3G all together.
I got a new SIM and now I get 4G in places where I only get 1 to 2 bars of call signal.
And I also stay on 4G a lot longer. Almost never does it switch over on long downloads or streaming vid.
PS: HAHAHA "long downloads". Sometimes a 300MB download will take much less than a minute depending on where it's coming from.
It must suck to make believe you have fast data. Right, AT&T? HAHAHAHA WiMax!!!

Fix for Edge only on Tmobile?

I just got back from NYC and I travel to Buffalo several times a year. Roaming from Canada to the USA can be a very expensive so I picked up a Tmobile Sim for their wonderful $3/day Unlimited plan.
The problem is I am only able to get Edge internet, making GPS less than perfect. I have googled and found that the sgh-1727 modem is programmable and you are supposed to use a T989 rom and a tmobile modem.
I am comfortable with flashing anything to my phone designed for my phone, but venturing outside the SGH-1727 rom land makes me a little nervous.
Can someone point me to a rom/modem combination that should work for tmobile so I know I won't end up with a brick? I don't care if it is gingerbread or ICS. I would just like to be able to use the net at a decent speed.

but the latest tmobile radio is this one,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1666988
keep in mind that some of the radios may have RIL files for ICS roms that may make your signal worse. the best way as i understand it now is to manually go into the radio zip file and remove the RIL so that when you flash it, you keep whatever RIL that the rom provides. good luck
This is a hardware radio thing, I other carriers work though, I get the same thing on T-mobile with all my phones.

The latest TMO Rom helps alot with the signal/data. I do notice with the 727 flashed with the 989 ROM it seems to get hot if I stay on 4G with netflix for a long period of time.
My area is not the best for TMO reception (in the standpoint of the "cell quality" stays yellow) so that could be part of why it gets so hot.

whats wrong with nexus s 4g

hi all. I myself have a moto atrix 4g on att. i am familiar with rooting unlocking bl and flashing. so i decided to help my friend with his nexus s 4g unrooted, locked, on stock sprint 4.0.4 build IMM76D, baseband D720SPRLC1, kernel 3.0.8.
last night I unlocked bl, rooted and installed cm9 posted by burnsra as I saw it was the most popular cm9 by replies or views. now all this started because my atrix was having double the reception compared to ns4g in everything wifi, network, data. so i thought cm9 would do something good here. but after installing it successfully the wifi signal is at 2 bars the data reception is at one bar, the 4g reception non existent.
Is there any new baseband that would enhance the reception of wifi, sprint network 3/4g?
right now I am on baseband D720SPRLC1.
test i did: i installed speedtest.net app on both phones. i was 10 feet from my home router N with no walls, doors in between. ns4g was always 5-7 mbps download, slower than atrix and almost 2mbps slower in upload.
never mind for data speed. ( i know its apple to oranges, att/sprint) but still atrix was 10 times faster on att hspa+ than ns4g on sprint with 4g on.
wifi and network bars are most of the time at 2 bars.
is there anything left to do to make it better in reception?
any ideas suggestions are welcome.
thanks
You can try different basebands. Depending on your area, whatever you flash can either improve or worsen the signal. I've heard Sprint doesn't have the greatest in terms of 4G speeds. I'm no expert on network speeds and such, but I think it also have to do with whatever technology is being used for the networks. HSPA+ is gonna be faster I believe. My G2 has faster download speeds than my NS IIRC. I haven't done a real world comparison lately. I think my G2 was getting like 10 down a few years ago on campus. Lol. My NS only gets like 5 or 6.
Actually, you answered your own question ... it is an apples to oranges comparison. Wimax download speeds of 5-7 sound about right, and uploads will be slower. There's no question that Sprint is way behind AT&T and Verizon with their advanced data networks. In the meantime, what you experienced is just about all there is for now. The LC1 radio is the most current.

omg now I understand why I pay a little bit more on att network.
anyway is there any combination between kernels and basebands that might give some better reception on ns4g?
thanks

There really isn't anything that can be done to make much of a difference. I flashed the latest CM9 nightly, checked my 4g speeds and they are in the 3-4 range ...and I can see the Sprint tower across the road. Most of us who are hanging onto Sprint, in spite of the service ... are doing so because of the unlimited data. But, Sprint really needs to break out the LTE soon, or there may be a massive exodus.

Serious wifi calling problems, all kernels share the same problem

So I moved to a new house which has basically no LTE and lower cellular coverage. My old house was a highrise with a literal t-mobile tower on the top, so I never even considered using wifi calling as my LTE coverage was perfect.
So here I am, with my Note 5, thinking I can rely on wifi calling in my new house. The house has excellent wifi coverage that can still achieve decent speeds even on the exterior. I use an Asus AC router that I've completely opened up to the world while troubleshooting the problem. Sitting in my living room (where my most recent call was dropped), I'm pulling down 74mbps and uploading 13mbps according to the speedtest app on the note 5.
My phone shows that it's connected to wifi and that Wifi calling is enabled. I've also changed it to "Wifi calling preferred" so it doesn't even attempt to use the limited cellular network that I can get in some rooms occasionally (depending on air density).
However, I basically miss all inbound calls, outbound calls only occasionally connect, and when I do have a successful call, it drops in and out as though I'm on an actual spotty cellular network.
I've tried Arter, SkyHigh and stock rooted kernels, all with the same results. I'm basically at my wit's end and getting ready to abandoned t-mobile. I read that exynos does not handle these handoffs and transitions as well as qualcom SOCs, but I'm reluctant to give up my great note 5 for a ****ty LG just to test this theory.
Can anyone provide some guidance or advice on how I can deal with this? I'm on the original jump plan + unlimited data and I really don't want to abandon t-mobile, but working voice is essential.

Not sure of a solution but I can tell you that I use Wifi calling all the time on the Note 5 and do not experience any of these issues.
We would need to know more details to help further.
Are you stock? If not, which rom?
When was the last time you wiped your phone?
Anyone else have Tmob in the home?
I understand your frustration but I dont think its Tmobile. Chances are its something with your internet connection or a software issue of the phone.

Thanks for the reply! Not stock, using Darthstalker V11 rom. Only person living here, but I do have a verizon iphone for work. I just moved here, and prior to moving, I had an enterprise level firewall in place, which meant I had to open up the right ports to allow for wifi calling. Since I've moved, I haven't even put it in place, so I'm just using an Asus router as a router & AP with no firewall functionality.
Phone was last wiped a couple of months ago when installing the latest version of Darthstalker. With each kernel I've tried, I've wiped the cache multiple times post-install.

I never had to actually rely on it, so I'm not sure. I used it here and there when visiting low-coverage areas, but now it's basically my only option. For reference, I moved from the DC area to a smaller town in Central VA that only recently received t-mobile LTE. That being said... in certain areas of my house I get enough t-mobile LTE to pull down 30Mbps, but the upload portion is incredibly asymmetric and only pushes about .1 mbps up... Given that I get decent LTE in some places in the house, but it drops off as soon as I turn the corner, I've configured wifi calling to prefer wifi over cellular, which leads to another odd thing....the phone basically needs to be rebooted once leaving a wifi calling network, as it'll never switch the LTE radio back unless I reboot. It'll just stay on 3g/edge otherwise.
As for my wifi coverage, I get great speeds when testing basically anywhere in the house, both upload and download. However, when I'm on a call that is clearly being routed through wifi, it'll start pinging me and warning that the call may be dropped in place where I'm still getting excellent wifi coverage.
