OTA 2.3.4 Upgrade - Battery Issues

So I have had the OTA upgrade on my phone for the past few days and the battery life has gotten unbelievably bad. I'm so confused because it seems to have helped a lot of peoples batteries. I have not changed any habits at all and can barely get through the morning. I'm losing 20% just on the 25 minute train ride to work.
Any ideas?

Still no improvement. There have to be more than just 2 people that have experienced something this drastic. I have made absolutely NO changes other than the update and the battery life is absolutely pathetic --- like 3-4 hours pathetic.
And no I have nothing synching.

That isn't good at all...may I suggest an extended battery? This is my battery stats for today thus far. I have a chichitec battery. I have 13 widgets, 3 email accounts, and a twitter account syncing every couple of hours.

I'm no expert, but perhaps it'd be worth installing an app that monitors CPU usage. I remember having such battery problems with the Desire HD and it came down the the CPU constantly running at 100%. Perhaps you have an app that took a dislike to the update?

This is my situation also. Battery is the worse battery of any smartphone I've owned, since the update. No root, nothing. I'm either too lazy or not savvy enough to pinpoint this down, as far as apps, what is syncing, how often, blah blah. All I know is I am using it as little as possible b/c of the battery. I have had it 8 days, and REALLY need to call Cust Serv asap so I can get a replacement and see what happens, but I just don't want to go through the hassle of them trying to troubleshoot the phone. I'm also experiencing the HTC Sense reloading when exiting out of apps, and a few other small bugs/glitches, like web pages jumping/skipping around when I am scrolling through them. Sorry to unload on this thread I know it's about battery...

Same problem, but my battery get way way way too hot. All that energy loss getting hot is killing my battery. It gets up to 50+ degrees C. Way to hot and ever since using these 2.3.4 ROMs.

Try calibrating the battery.

You guys also might have gotten a bad battery. I'm pretty sure if you call HTC they'll send you one free if you tell them the battery overheats.

This would make perfect sense if I didn't have my phone from the initial launch day at Walmart and the battery had been great for me UNTIL the upgrade. It's not the battery's fault.
And yes, I have recalibrated. And no, synching is not the issue since everything is the same from prior to the upgrade.

Actually you do need to recalibrate the battery. I had really bad battery life after the ota upgrade, spare parts app and wiping battery stats and now much better battery life than before ota. I have 64% at the moment, unplugged at 7:30am. I used to get 8 hours to a charge right after ota

Before the Update, my battery life was great, except that occasionally I'd wake my phone up to a Battery meter showing a big grey !, instead of the color-coded indicator. A quick glance online said there was something possibly wrong with the battery, or that it was an unsupported 3rd-party battery
After the update, the battery will suddenly decide its ~70% lower than it was several minutes before, and shut itself down. I had to take the battery out, then put it back in, before the phone would recognize that the battery was actually still mostly charged.
The warning symbol mentioned above was infrequent enough, I could believe it wasn't noticed by everyone having these troubles. I think there's simply something wrong with the batteries, but since the 2.3.4 update, the phone treats the problem differently

How did you use "Spare parts"? I downloaded it and I can't find where to wipe the battery stats. I pick battery history and it tells me I'm using gingerbread ROM which does not contain battery stats reporting activity.

An app could be playing up. I know it's annoying but you could try a factory reset and reinstall everything from scratch. I find this helps tame apps that misbehave.
If your phone was fine prior to the update it's unlikely its a battery/hardware issue.

+1, your battery stats got wiped from the update, so you need to do a few complete charge to 0%'s.

Add me to the list of people whose battery life died after the upgrade. I even tired a factory reset over the weekend to no avail. I also tried switching batteries from another Sensation that I have which wasn't being used but no luck there either. In my mind it definitely is a software issue. And to think I used to brag about this phone's battery life!
I just need to root this thing and move on. Was hoping the HTC root process would come out soon. The instructions make rooting HTC's seem more complicated than my Samsung Vibrant which was pretty simple.

How do you calibrate the battery? lawl

If you're rooted, you can download an app called Battery Calibration that will help with calibrating the battery.
Otherwise, basically run your phone up to 100%, then drain it down to 0 until it shuts off, then recharge it back to 100%. Do this several times over the course of a few days and it should be calibrated.

Been experiencing the same thing. Finally got around to checking wakelock, and found that HTC sense had wakelocked the phone for 9 hours (the awake bar in system settings was solid). Some quick googling suggests that in certain cases, the HTC Sense sync can do this, so our common denominator may be that we all have a sense account set up.
I've disabled sense in my accounts, and killed the sense service. We'll see if that "fixes" it.

Are you like me with battery life?

I'm getting pretty good battery life on bean R2 (I easily average 20+hrs). But no matter which ROM I am on, no matter if I'm getting great or poor battery life, I always start to get on edge once I have dropped below 70%. I start to think, damn there goes battery today. I realize I still have 3/4 of my battery remaining but I just feel this anxiety that my phone is not near full charge.
I let it drain to empty a couple times a month but it becomes almost unbearable when I get down to the last 1/3 of my battery life.
Is it just me?

sounds like you need to turn off percentages. I had this problem until i turned it off. Now i have to go a few steps further to find out what it actually is and that makes me not care as much.

My battery life is HORRIBLE.

Have you tried using an app like GSam Battery Monitor?
I've been able to track down a few issues with that app, including one where I needed to wipe my cache to stop my internal sd card from being continuously scanned.

I always get over 2 hours of screen time over the course of a day. Currently using AOKP Jelly Bean, and it's still the same!

Don't drain your battery. People really need to stop thinking these are the old batteries of yesteryear. Draining your battery will cause it stress and lower it's overall life and charge over time. Draining your battery is causing exactly what you're trying to prevent. Best practice is to let it get to 15-20% and then charge.
On topic, I get anxiety about battery at around 70% too. Mostly because it seems to hit that point pretty fast, but then can last the rest of the day no problem.

Have fun with your new phone and keep a charger on stand by! If you use your phone medium to heavy use you should get to the end of your work day and you can charge it when you get home. Did you get your sd card issue resolved?

Ive found that having a spare battery always charged, along with the spare battery charger handy so I can charge a battery while using my phone, works great for my mental 'battery issues'!

On Synergy 1.3, I have AMAZING battery life! Can usually go 2 days between charges if I wanted to...Unplug the phone at 8am and at midnight, I'm rocking 50-60% still, depending on the day.
GSam Battery Monitor can help find apps that are abnormally draining the battery...But I've found that it too can cause the phone to get stuck in a wake lock...So I don't keep it installed, only use it if I have a weird battery drain issue.

I'm the same way, if not worse. I constantly look at power usage (in miliamps and %/hr). I should just remove all battery widgets and percentages, I almost always have enough battery, just paranoid.

That's weird how they do that.
My phone does the same exact thing with the big 4000+ Hyperion battery. It drops to 70% in what seems like no time at all, then three hours later it is still at 70%. The battery gauge obviously is not very accurate at all.
Right now, my phone has been on for just under 10 hours and says it is at 40%. if I just let it go (I charge it every night) it would run all night and still be at around 40% tomorrow morning.

I am the same way after just installing synergy 1.3 on saturday I have been constantly checking battery percentage. Anytime I change anything I get obsessed with it for a while.

This is what I like to see! Used to not be able to get close to 3 hours screen on.

Switched to beans custom rom. This will be my first discharge though.

Battery
I've read about the new batteries and not letting them completely discharge, instead recharging when it gets to 15% or so.My battery life was awful, if I was at 45% or less I needed to plug it in before going to bed. This was a daily thing, I charged my phone every night, Well I forgot the other night and woke up to a dead battery. I plugged the phone in and turned it on while charging. I charged it to 100%. This was 2 mornings ago (not been charged since) and I'm just now a 46% with normal usage (for me). I just thought this was interesting and wonder if anyone else has experienced this or can replicate it.

Battery Life
I'm getting smoking battery life, been tethering a good 2/3 hours and been on the phone and answering email add day and checking this site. I am on 1.5 Synengy, and using the Snapdragon CPU script that was posted in one of the forums. I can post the link as I don't have a large enough post count, however I would search the forum and find the mod and use it.
It's amazing, I'm at 51% battery and have not plugged in all day. I unplugged it at 7:30 am Arizona time and it's 4:30pm AZ time.
Try it, it' works.

Here is the link to the mod I used on my G3 it works amazing, it's a little confusing to enable, but one it's enabled you can rest assured it will work.
You can also change the processor speeds along with the battery save options.

Wow, your cell standby was eating you up. Hope you got that fixed.
As far as battery life, I feel mine is average to good. Cell standby and Android OS account for only 9% and 5% of my battery, the other 52% of it used up is screen.. so I think thats pretty good numbers to see.

[Q] Help with identifying Nexus S i9020a Battery Drain

Running Stock ICS 4.1.2 on Nexus S i9020A on AT&T US.
The battery was fine till about a few months back, but of late, it is draining @ around 8-10% per hour on standby!. I originally thought JB was causing the drain, and switched to ICS, and finally to GB. But the drain is consistent across all three.
There is also accelerated battery drain if my phone is completely switched off. If I leave the battery in the phone after powering off, the battery goes from 100 - 0 in less than 4 hours. Thinking the battery might have gone bad, I bought another oem battery, but that is exhibiting the same behavior.
This leads me to think there might be a hardware issue with my phone. I am tired of keeping the phone plugged in at all times, and am ready to throw this out the window and get another phone. As a last ditch effort, I wanted to post this here to see if I can get any kind of feedback/confirmation on this before I buy another phone. Other users are reporting 1-2% battery drain on standby, so 8-10% drain is unacceptable by any standard.
I have attached some screenshots from today when the battery was at 20% after about 9 hours. For this test, I did the following last night:
1. uninstalled all apps I downloaded
2. turned off WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, sync, auto brightness ( set to the minimum brightness)
I charged the phone fully, and then left it on standby, with minimal usage - I think I made a 2 minute call, checked my email once, and read some rss feeds for about 5 minutes in the 9 hours I tested it.

I know I'm not giving any advice here but I just wanted to let you know I'm in the same boat. No matter what ROM GB/ICS/JB I lose too much battery per hour with the phone just on standby. There's no explanation for %10 battery drain per hour with pretty much everything off (wifi, data, gps, nfc, background data, etc)
I have tried everything and now I must admit I've given up. I'm just going to ride out CM 10.1 until I can decide on a new phone, most likely the Nexus 4 or HTC One.

Yeah, your phone doesn't seem to be doing much while asleep. 20 minutes screen on, 35 minutes active, yet battery down to 21%. My battery would be at 90% with that sort of usage. Since you changed the battery (I'll assume it's a decent quality battery, although a cheap battery could be in cause), there's not much left.

Have you tried switching 3G off? 3G seems to SUCK the life out of these Nexus S batteries like no tomorrow.
But I suspect it's a hardware issue with the Nexus S phones. I have WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G and auto-sync all shut off and a static wallpaper and I will lose 20% of my battery in 7-8 hours.

Battery is kernel related. Try changing your I/o scheduler to row and governor to smartassv2. If you don't have those options then look for a kernel that does...air kernel and matrix should suffice.

NO SOLUTION so far
A friend was having the same issue, gave him the battery of my nexus s ... it lasted him for 7-8hrs max whereas it gives me 1 day~ on 2G and normal use without gaimng . So my guess like his mobile your mobile may have some component which is short and draining out the battery . I have been trying to look around for answer but so far no luck. So better check it with another batteryif you can before purchasing a new one.

If anyone is investigating why their Nexus S suddenly starts draining the battery in a matter of hours, BEFORE spending a ton of time (like I did) trying to diagnose what software problem you might have, do the vampire test, as described here:

I wasted days before coming across this test on this forum, and it proved it had to be a hardware fault.
I have two healthy batteries, both hold a charge for days (probably weeks) when not inserted in the phone, but pop one in the phone, leave it powered off, and within 6 hrs it's dead. So frustrating, and sad to see this phone go.

every time i get a new phone i seem to have bad luck with them when it comes to battery..(optimus 4x, nexus 4, nexus 5) i always see reviews and comments saying they get X screen on time and i always get X-2 screen on time and poor standby time
ive tried everything, changing roms, kernels, checking wakelocks turning wifi or 3g off when not used(LTE always off)
the most i ever seem to get is 3 hours and thats a really good day on low performance(underclocked) and i also barely game..
how in the hell do people get 5 hours screen time and complain about it.. meaning that they actually get more! and they say they game and browse alot.. im not only comparing to people online, i also compare with my friends who get good battery.. we dont seem to be doing anything different

It's all about looking at what is using your battery and mitigating as many of them as you can. Some people might find they can't live without many features of a phone and so will generally get less time then someone who is willing to sacrifice certain features or adjust their usage to improve battery time.

Sharing your full setup could help us help you... ROM, kernel and kernel settings, apps installed, tweaks made, wakelocks you're having, etc.
Personally, I'm coming to the N5 from the Verizon Galaxy Nexus, and I've been astounded with the battery life of this phone. It's the first time in over a year, that I don't feel the burning need to carry a charger with me everywhere I go. Additionally, this is the first device that's made me seriously consider NOT rooting.
As of this moment, I'm running rooted stock firmware, with Faux kernel 008m, and I'm getting spectacular results! I'd love to help you work this out.
As a point of comparison, this is a battery life readout I took two days ago... I can't complain at all about nearly 27 hours of uptime, with 4 hours SOT.

im on 100% now charging so theres nothing to upload and my wakelocks show nothing just maps.. and i forgot to mention that i usually turn off location as well.. i have no problem changing to stock but most people get good battery life with roms too..i dont mind which kernel either cause every kernel will be really fast with the snapdragon 800
current rom liquid smooth
kernel - just upgraded to faux an hour ago.. phone is heating and percentage dropping fast(not that the previous ones were great)
no tweaks
kernel settings
fast fast charge, eco mode and intelliplug- all on
300000-2265600 frequency
and ondemand governer

I recommend do this on a stock ROM, but can work on any.
Have your phone set up normally. Charge it full, reboot in "safe mode" and don't open any apps. Just let it do its thing for a few hours, or over night. See how the battery life is now. It should improve. If so, you got something 3rd party killing it.

Turn off location reporting and location history. It'll improve your battery life dramatically without making any noticeable impact on the phone's capabilities (including Google Now). I also recommend disabling Google+ if you don't use it.

@namnam123 did you have heat issues with the phone, prior to flashing Liquid or Faux? From my Galaxy Nexus days, I remember heat problems being caused (occasionally) by an improper/nonexistent wipe during flashing. You cleared dalvik and cache at least, correct?

The point is to see if the battery still drains as quickly without any third-party apps or mods. If not, then the problem isn't the phone, but rather something you installed on it. Some apps can run in the background and drain battery power even when you're not using them. Some mods like custom kernels can also worsen battery life.

yes i always wipe the cache and dalvik cache

Make sure wifi scanning is off too. And ages ago usb fast charge used to cause issues with massive battery drain when the screen was on. So turn it off and see if it helps. I am talking years ago tho. It was literally meant to be turned on when plugging in and leaving the phone alone. Then disabled when taking off charge

Battery life getting worse, common problem?

Yesterday a post was made to /r/nexus5 on reddit about how battery life was getting worse as time went on. Over 100 people replied saying that their phone was getting worse battery life as well. Here's the link: http://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus5/comments/1yxj2g/battery_life_went_from_insane_to_terrible/ The most people were able to find out was that there was a problem with the Android OS process. Are you guys having similar issues? And do you have any fixes?

Batteries do lose their max charge over time. We're now 6 months aged for the first purchased devices, so it could simply be those batteries are starting to age. They still have years to go, but a brand new battery will always be impressive.
It's one reason why I silently laugh at people bragging about great battery life for a brand new device. of course it will get good life, it's a new battery running optimized software that isn't pushing the hardware as hard as the software 2 years into a device life cycle.

as time goes on, you install more and more apps. many apps arent coded very well, and have other issues. anyways, people get more and more of these crappy apps that will drain more and more battery without you even using them. anywho, not a problem here. i get pretty much the exact same battery life now as i did months ago.

great battery life for an "old" device, 5-6 hours screen on time every single day. the batteries life doesnt reduce that quick, and generally youll change phones(within 2 years) before you see the life of your battery shorten.

6 months isn't going to be noticeably less max charge unless the battery was severely abused. Also the phone has been out for 4 months and most are younger.
Here's something to think about: Usage patterns change. People install new apps.

Indeed usage patterns play a massive part. And some of which can be completely out of your control.
At home on WiFi I'll get 6-7 hours of screen time.
At home on hspa I'll get 5-6
At work on hspa I'll get 3-4
So at worst case scenario I can lose half of my normal battery usage just based on the carrier performance.

I get about 3-4 hours SoT daily... If anything, that has gone up since I got my device (one of the first batches shipped in US).
I wish I could get 5-7 SoT, with numbers like that, I'm beginning to think I'm doing something very very wrong
Point is... I have one of the first phones shipped out, and my battery life has stayed exactly the same.

High battery usage by Android OS is probably good indication that there are some wakelocks. It has nothing to do with battery being "older".
My battery is great from day one.
Captain obvious mode now:
Posting SoT is pointless and proves nothing. It really depends on what you are doing when screen is on. It is really obvious that it is not the same if you read some book with 5% brightness or play a game.
My SoTs go from 2h up to 7h, depending on usage...

wake lock is main reason makes battery drains so much. try to use greenify to hibernate apps.

LOL. Yep. Give me a day and I'll show you screenies of ten hours of SOT. It'll be BS because to get those results I have to set my phones brightness to less than stock. I also have to set screen timeout to 30 minutes. As well I need to remember to turn the damn screen back on after 30 minutes. I also have to make sure my phone is in my sock drawer doing nothing when the screen is on. It'll still show 10 hours SOT though.

Yeah, the common problem.... My battery just is used for 5 hours.
But there are some fixs to follow:

I posted my usual screen times on a typical day for me.
Typically I do the same things which are a lot of xda and viewing the verge and YouTube. A few calls and texts.
And from my experience the difference between being at home with WiFi off and being at work with WiFi off is that my battery usually lasts nearly twice as long at home.
I was trying to get across the message that your carriers signal strength plays a massive role on how long your battery lasts.
So say if a mast went down and you get bumped onto one a bit further away (they don't rush when fixing these things unless it's a critical one). You would have done nothing and all of a sudden your battery life has started taking a massive hit.

I'm also having this problem with the android os draining my batter And this started happening within the last week or so.I used to be able to easily get about 30 hours out of my phone, now I'm only able to get about half that. As you can see in the 4th pic, android os has been the cause of a 3h45m partial wakelock, which doesnt seem right to me and is probably the cause of most of the battery drain. the last 2 pics are something that also seems weird to me, as google accounts manager shouldnt take 4% in about an hour. I dont even know why its running that long. Though i know how to quick fix the account manager drain (simply disable it) the android os isnt that simple as i dont know how to see exactly what apps or processes are making it cause a partial wakelock.
Im on omnirom using chaos kernel 9.2

I had a similar issue a while back, and in the end it was Google location reporting within Google now service. Try to switch location reporting off but leave location history on and see if it helps. Also choose Location mode to battery saving.
Turning off location reporting does not affect Google Now functionality...
It can be something else in your case, but this problem was common...

One thing I've noticed as a weirdness is the cache of a phone can get stale and so it gets into some weird loop that drains battery or something and clearing the cache improves battery life. Also sometimes apps can develop bugs or new wakelocks when you do an update so sometimes you have to stay on top of it to track it.

If I did not use some preventative measures to prolong battery life I would maybe get 14-16 hours in a day of usage, I always left wifi on, bluetooth even when not connected, data, force LTE, etc. I did not care because I charge my phone every night. I just find it silly if I get a day usage out of my phone and it is at 50% well assuming you use the phone the exact same as the last day you will use another 50% and it will be dead by the time you get to your charger.
