[Q]How to know which model we have? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I noticed that Google and Lg have subtly redesigned our nexus 5 with adjustments to the speaker holes and to the volume and power buttons. What I'm wanting to know which batches of the devices have had the adjustments, its hard to compare when you only have one device. Is there a way to look for a date of build with the device or is there a special *#+++# combination that we could run. I ordered my 32Gb white version Saturday night and got it Monday so I'm hoping mines a adjusted version

the whites are older surplus versions

So it could be the new adjusted version?

Check your box. If SN starts with 310K, it's old. 311K is revised. But trust me,,,,it does not make much of a difrnc....even new batch has some display issue like ‘more yellow display’ and ‘green stuck pixels’.
go to this link http://ausdroid.net/2013/12/13/revised-nexus-5-hardware-shipping-to-some-customers/
hope this helps

Is it safe?!?

Guys, I'm about to order Nexus 5 from Canadian Google site and I would like to know if I'm going to get the latest hardware version. Is it safe to assume that I'm going to get the latest version if I order today? Or do they have to sell old stock first?
Thanks for your time
You'll get what you get. You cannot influence that. I have the first one and its perfectly fine by me.

Definitive yellow screen answer

My nexus 5 has a terribly yellow screen, I have read on here and other places a few explanations and solutions for it. I'm thinking about sending it back.
One explanation that people have given is that it is a glue or cleaning product that is used in the factory and that it will get better over time. I don't quite buy this but people have said they have compared it to other devices over time and it has got better.
Another explanation is that it is a software issue and that an app or kernel will fix the yellow cast. I guess this is possible.
The final explanation and the one that makes the most sense to me is that this is just the way the panel has been manufactured and no software or amount of time will fix it. In this case software might mitigate it by balancing out the other colours but the the physical problem will persist.
So do I wait or get a new kernel or what?
I would prefer an answer with proof, a before and after pic for any of the above scenarios. I've attached a photo of my nexus 5 on the left vs an older nexus on the right and a note 2014 in the background.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there is no definitive answer. What you can find in this forum is as much as we've got

Well, I think I can pretty much rule out the glue or cleaner issue. If have the device facing me and then tilt the screen between 10 & 20 degrees forward the screen becomes much cooler and the whites much better. So I can say with a good degree of certainty that there is nothing on the screen that is actually discolouring it. It seems that it is just the way the panel was manufactured, a batch of screens where the polarization filters were different.
I guess another kernel could still get around this issue with a better screen calibration.

Does it have the same color settings compared with Franco's ?
I'm not sure. I've never used his kernel. My Nexus is not yellow so I kept my color balance as is. But I did try Flar's tweak in his elemental kernel and it did make the screen very cool temperature.

I tried francos kernel last night and it doesn't have color control in it anymore, i tried the app which controls gamma and messed with it for hours but could not get it right.
Will try the elemental kernel.
Does anyone know if all new Nexus 5 orders will now have this yellow tint? Or is this just a hit and miss issue where some are yellow and some are white?
I have heard when manufacturers make TVs especially the first run usually has better viewing angles/color balance so that the TV gets good reviews, and then they switch to cheaper parts that don't perform as well to increase profit revenue. Curious if anyone can comment on this?

Not quite sure what you mean by this, are you saying this never happens in electronics manufacturing?
I can tell you with absolute certainty that it is very common for purchasing departments to procure cheaper parts/materials for the purpose of increasing profit margins (after usually being directed to do so/approved by the engineering and sales teams). The only manufacturers who do not commonly do this are ones that sell to medical companies and/or require FDA approval because by law they need to get reevaluated (which costs money/time) if there are any changes with the supply chain of the parts going into the product.
Elementalx kernel seems to have fixed it up perfectly. It's now very white. Thanks all.
Its even whiter and brighter than my housemates n5, which looked much better before.

What is your hardware version?

Dial ##778# on your Verizon HTC One M8, press send, choose view mode, and tap display. My HW Version Is 0004 with a manufacture date of 03/27/14 . My friend has one and his is version 0004 with manufacture date of 03/09/14. I'm bringing this topic up because my HTC One M8 is different from his in a lot of ways. Brighter screen, loose volume buttons, the list goes on. So XDA, what HW Version is your HTC One M8?
HW Version: 0004
Screen: unless you have another M8 to compare to, then you probably won't notice, but my screen is beautiful with bright pure whites.
Volume rocker: loose
Camera: scratches easily
Power Button: raised
Manufacture date: 3/27
Add anything that you feel like adding.
Edit: I looked at my friends hw version wrong, it says 0004 and not 0003. But I'm still interested in knowing if their are any other hardware versions out there. Also, any similarities between manufacture dates and quality of phones.
0004 here manufactured 3/10/2014 mine the only two things that bug me are the power button is really flush whereas my other one it sticks out more and has a more tactile touch to it... Also my SD card tray sticks out a bit on the one side and the other one I bought doesn't... I'll have to check the other phones HW # later and update...
As a side note my CPU bin is 13 with this hardware #... Supposedly higher bin numbers tolerate OC'ing better than lower bins.... Not sure cause I haven't OC'ed a phone in a few years though lol...
Sent from my VZW M8
Not sure if the HW# and CPU binning have any correlation to each other just figured I'd throw that in...
Firewater also worked on this version no problem
Other M8 is 0004 3/12/2014... No defects or flaws
Mine's 0004 with mfg date of 4/9/14.
It would be interesting to see if anyone has an 0005 or higher if those are the phones that firewater is not working on. It worked fine on my phone. Of course this may have absolutely nothing to do with it...

What's defective about your screen? Dead pixles? That's what my first HTC one m8 had. But I didn't know about the manufacture date and hardware version at the time. I exchanged it within my fourteen days.
HW 0004, 5/16/14.
I was able to s off using Firewater.
Also curious since I got this phone with advanced exchange, saw the refurbishment line says NO. I guess I got a new phone??

Kind of hard to explain. If you look at it from an angle you can see two tiny lines of white gives away that the screen was installed poorly. With a black picture on the display you can see this area on the right end of the screen that sort of looks like a crease against the screen. When you put the slightest bit of pressure on that right side of the screen you get the same effect as pressing on a TV or monitor... Don't know if there's a term for it but its annoying. Didn't consider replacing it until after the 14 day period. After that I figured it wasn't worth a possible refurbished phone so I live with it. I was able to s off first try on hardware 004 BTW.
Sent from my HTC6525LVW using Tapatalk
Mine is 004 & 5/10/2014 it seems mine has been the newest posted. Mine was a brand new asuron replacement was very nice to not be a refurb. I think the m8's there are a lot more warranty returns to refurb so the replacements we do get are brand new most times, cant complain about that htc has done pretty good with the m8 and the m7 was pretty good too, we really cant complain unlike the guys running samsung phones they can complain lol.
version
0004 3/6/2014 for me.. the only issue I have is where the lower right speaker grill meets the screen.. it's slightly raised. You can't see it unless you look very close or slowly move a finger across the section.

Identifying the code for refined Nexus 5

Hello, I live in Pakistan and we can't buy from Google Play here yet so I have to buy a new Nexus 5 from a shop most probably. We all know that after short period of nexus 5 release Google announced some refinements to the speaker grill and earpiece I guess and some other which I don't remember now.
As I wanna be sure that I buy the right Nexus 5 which is refined one so I would like to know the method to identify from the box that wether the nexus box I'm holding is refined or it's an old unit. a serial code or something that'd tell...
Thanks in advance, I plan to buy it in 2 weeks.
There are no refinements. The article that "announced" it, didn't have its facts straight.
Please ask questions in q&a not general

Exactly. Some just have bigger holes due to "manufacturing tolerances ". A brand new nexus built this month could have either size.

Some DO have big holes. Some DO have small holes. There is no version. There is no serial number identifier. Its just different machines calibrated differently that produce nexus 5
Ok yeah never thought about the number difference. But on my newer n5 everything is much more refined then the older one lol which is weird

Refined would be the wrong word. Different is a better word
Someone else can buy a Nexus made yesterday and it could have small holes.

I'm 100% correct..
One guy got nexus with bigger holes in November last year. He took a photo of the October phone and the November phone and wrote a blog article. From them on, every tech site reposted the same (and completely incorrect ) blog post.. So yes gsm arena are wrong. Engadget are wrong and if AT&T or sprint based their information on the same blog post, they too ARE WRONG
Every link that everyone posts trying to say I am wrong always has the EXACT same photo from the exact same Incorrect blog post. There are NO REVISIONS. There are NO REVISED SPEAKER HOLES. You can still buy a nexus 5 manufactured yesterday with small holes and rattling buttons. Thats because there are NO REVISIONS.
So just in case this has not cleared things up enough for you, there is NO WAY to tell how big the speaker holes will be from outside of the box. Thats because they are not linked to any serial number or any other information on the outside of the box. Some have big some have little and that's just the way it is.
Its not even like they make things louder or anything. Its completely cosmetic.

I'm afraid @rootSU is correct, @Xami .
Not long after the Nexus 5 came out there was a HUGE buzz started here on XDA about rev #s in the bootloader. Though it wasn't a big deal, the whole thing was hyped up and people started to speculate the meaning of this. Members started correlating the Rev#'s with these bigger speaker grill holes and started making up their own conclusions about the meaning of the whole thing.
As it turns out, many cases were found among members who had the same revision numbers and slightly different button flushness and different speaker hole styles. The whole thing proved to be nothing more than hysteria as the volume issue was fixed through one of the 4.4 updates - so no matter the size of the grill of your speakers, your volume will be louder.
To my knowledge there has been no official difference in the performance of either model in any domain. As was said earlier, these minute differences are the result of manufacturing tolerances.
One rumour 8 months ago and we're all still wasting time talking about it. If learned one thing, its that none of the tech news sites do any of their own research and perpetuate lies and misconceptions as news worthy truth.

I'm not sure what's worse, the blatant re-posting of false information that was done by supposedly legitimate news sources, or the fact that people believe the ever so slightly bigger speaker holes would sound significantly different. Even in the infamous comparison pictures you'd be hard pressed to notice any difference without someone pointing it out.
I bought mine 6 months ago and it has medium sized speaker holes. A friends two day old one has small holes. It hardly makes a difference when I compared mine with his.
Okay, let's cut to the chase here. Just tell me which code tells the date that the unit is manafactured on
I'm sorry If I said anything wrong.

What they were trying to tell you is the date of manufacturer has no correspondence to the type of phone you receive, as there was no revision or "refinement" as you call it.
That being said you can figure out which month, year, and country each phone was manufactured in by its serial number.

Samsung Red Tint Update Fix

Well it appears Samsung is going to release an update to address the red tint issue. Still worth returning for a new one or do you think it might actually be software related?
https://www.google.com/amp/www.zdne...ce-software-update-for-galaxy-s8-red-display/
Considering it's only affecting South Korean units, I'd say it's a hardware defect and not something that can be permanently fixed with a software update.

I pre-ordered my S8 direct from Samsung.com store with Gear VR glasses for USA T-Mobile (black color). Got it yesterday and mine also has a reddish tint most noticeable on the right edge. The red tint is not as noticeable or not at all if you look at the screen straight on. It is more noticeable if you view the screen from an angle.
Note to those who say that they are not affected by red tint... I thought mine was not affected either out of the box as the screen appeared "white" initially looking at the screen straight on. Hardly noticed any reddish hue. BUT, if you have other phones with real white screens and you put it next to the S8, then you will see that the S8 indeed has a reddish hue to it. So you all should double check like this and see if your S8 has a red tint or not. I think they all do as to me it seems like a screen hardware issue not a software issue, since the red hue is not consistent in intensity across the entire screen but is more prevalent in varying spots of the screen. Software misadjustments I don't think would present itself that way on the screen! Samsung has an issue with this I believe.
I received the update from TMO last night and no it does not fix anything. The update allows for the red hue to turned off even further but it does not fix anything what's so ever. The red tint is still there. Absolutely unacceptable. Samsung's QA has gone to **** and it only proves they worry about numbers and not the quality of their product. It's sad because their phone designs have stepped up big time compared to other OEMs.

Could you possibly link me to where it said that users outside South Korea are facing the issue?
I'm honestly dreading all this and hoping Samsung isn't BS'ing this time and that if this is a software fix for sure.

May not have been the fix for the display since Samsung plans to release it end of this month and the changelog would've mentioned something.

Appreciate the thread link.
Considering there's no certain pattern yet about which phones are affected, I noticed someone who had the issue had a Made In China manufacturing location, for the rest of you who have the red tint issue, where are your phones made?
