[Q] Charging when powered off - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just receieved moto g 16gb. Updated everything (there was no android update, only play store) and noticed something wierd.
If i shutdown my phone (not sleep but turn off) and plug in a charger or a computer moto g powers on and boots up.
Is this normal or not?
My previous phone (htc desire) would charge without booting up.

Interesting. I just tried this with mine but it doesn't boot. It just shows the Motorola logo and then shows how much it's charged already.
Germany and 8gb by the way.

I have seen several reports of this on various forums. Mine too had this - sometimes. I also had instances when it would not start charging when already switched on. My solution was to change my mains charger. Since then I've had no more issues but I'm not yet sure if this is just a coincidence.

Mine powers on even when i plug it into my laptop. I will be able to check other cables and chargers after 24 unfortunately.

it's definitely a charger issue, I've also seen people having the same problem on various forums & I can confirm that upon trying different chargers i have found one that is working as it should. :good:

I have the same issue on original usb cable connected to my laptop.

Its not a charger issue... It must be something else.
Mine also turns on if put it to charge while its off.

My Canadian 8gb also doesn't boot when I connect it to a wall charger or my laptop.

My phone also behaves as described in the OP; I can't find a way to charge it while keeping it off, which is pretty annoying when I need to charge it quickly. I've tried with it my computer's USB port and ASUS and Samsung and Nexus 4 LG OEM wall chargers, using various OEM cables. Pretty strange.

My UK version also boots when plugging in to charge. However it doesn't bother me as I've had numerous phone such as an iPhone which have done the same thing.

I'm concerned it might be somehow connected with issues others have - when battery is completely depleted some phones don't charge nor boot at all.

For me works with samsung (700 mah out), lg (700 mah out) and iphone (out 1500mah) charger.

Does it boot fully to the operating system? Or does it show bright white screen with Motorola logo and battery icon?

It shows bright white screen with battery icon.
Why in some case it restarts, what issue is? What cause boot?
Inviato dal mio XT1032 utilizzando Tapatalk

yep,if I pressed power off when the phone connecting to the computer,it will automatically reboot.

It boots even if I only plug to some charger and computer, without any pressed key.

Charging glitch?

Idk what the problem is but when I charge my phone no charging indicator comes up, if I leave the screen off for a little bit and turn it back on the number increases as if it is charging also if I turn the phone off and plugin the charger it turns on the phone instead of going to the charging mode, anyone else witnessed this problem? I've tried 3 different chargers and the same thing, tried reformaormatting and installing a different rom and the same thing happens running matrix 19 kernal...please help?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk 2
How old is your phone? did you try a new cord? I its not likely that it's the kernel or the rom. It's more likely your usb port
Also never had that happen... I would also say port or cord...
Any themes installed or a flashed battery icon?

No, brand new install...my phone is a year old and its charging just not the way its supposed to, I would really hate to send my phone in, any ideas on how to clean clean the port? I've also tried different chords as well as wall outlets the first time it boots up after a fresh format/install it works perfect as soon as the phone shuts off or reboots it occurs
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk 2
I found out what it is, I have one of those wall outlet chargers with the USB extension for the chord and I think the wall outlet part of the charger is messed up because I can take the USB chord out of it hook it up to the laptop and the charging icon appears bit still charges with the wall just no charging icon WEIRD

[Q] stock, unrooted one x battery problem..help?

My friend threw her phone on charge for the whole night and woke up this morning to find her battery level low. This isn't the first time it happened either. What could cause this?
P.S. the screenshot was taken right after the phone was pulled off the charger

Try a different charger? Also, if the phone was charged by USB, use the wall charger instead. Some USB ports may cut power when the computer is asleep, etc. For instance, I usually connect my phone to my PC using the USB ports on my monitor (just because they are conveniently located). Those ports get shutdown when the computer goes to sleep, which I always forget.

Well she plugs into the wall, never the computer. And the charger she uses is the charger that came w/ the phone. If its the charger that could possibly be the issue then I'll tell her to get it swapped out at an at&t store but I really don't think that's the issue honestly

Chargers can definitely just crap out, even if new. MicroUSB chargers are pretty common, and I've used ones for other devices (like my Motorola Bluetooth headset) on my One X just fine. If you have another MicroUSB charger laying around, its worth checking (just to eliminate the charger as the cause) rather than having to run to the store.
Otherwise, its possible there is something wrong with the microUSB jack on the phone itself, or some other hardware or software problem with the phone. If the charger is not the problem, backup personal data and factory reset the phone. If the problem still occurs, I'd recommend getting a warranty replacement.

Can you confirm that there was a "lightning bolt" in the battery icon in the status bar? If it's charging, there should be a lightning bolt in it. Check when you plug in the charger and just before unplugging it. If the lighting bolt is missing then most likely there is no current going into the device to charge the battery. It could also be a bad battery if the charger is working fine.

[Q] Issues with charging and mobile networks

I just received my Moto G yesterday (in the UK). I am unable to charge the phone using the cable provided with the phone. Other cables either do not work, or charge improperly (keeps going on and off, rapidly). With a wall charger, the charging is extremely slow, taking over 10 minutes to increase the charge by 1%.
Also, the phone is refusing to connect to my 3G network. I have even tried resetting the access point details. It works fine when it's connected to wifi.
Does anybody else have these issues? Do I need to ask Motorola for a replacement?
i don't have that problem. no issues with battery at all I'm getting about get about 6 hour or more SOT. maybe you may need to replace it

My Moto G bugs me out when charging sometimes as well, however my issue is different.
When charging it won't go beyond the 1% from wall charger. But it can charge from PC, however the phone gets extremely laggy when charging for some reason.

Hi no problems with mine I charge it with a 750ma Samsung charger charges absolutely fine I can also charge mine in the car with a 500ma USB adapter and cable. I think your phone is faulty and is burning the chargers out probably better off just getting a replacement.

For the charging issue with "unofficial" cables, you can try the tool in this thread, it may work:

Pixel won't charge until rebooted.

I'm experiencing a weird issue with my Pixel. Occasionally, I'll plug the phone into the OEM charger and it won't charge at all. Trying different outlets doesn't solve the issue but as soon as I reboot the phone and plug it in, it charges just fine. It's a strange issue I haven't encountered with any previous phone. Curious if others have experienced this?
Exact same issue here over the last few days.

In my case, I have a 2nd charger from SONEic that is an approved USB-C to USB-C that works flawlessly. However, like the OP said, my Google charger will ding like it's charging once connected, then stop charging 1 second later. It will repeat that endless dinging ever few seconds until I reboot it. Never happens with my SONEic charger. Once rebooted, the Google charger works fine. Very annoying.
I've tried unplugging everything, turning the cable around, etc., Only a reboot works.

I had this problem of start/stop/start charging with a reliable 1A charger and a usb A-to-C cable. A reboot would fix it. I ended up switching to another 2.4A charger (not QC) I had around with the same cable and have had no problems since. I still use the smaller charger on an old media phone.

Yeah, it's with the OEM charger. I am starting to think the charger is to blame. Unfortunately, I don't have a secondary fast charger to test with. However, I just updated my phone to the latest NDE63V build. I'll be monitoring closely over the next few days to see if the issue pops up with the OEM charger again or if the software update solves it.

I have the Google unlocked version. I unlocked my bootloader right after unboxing the phone, as I do with all my Nexus (now Pixel) devices.
This issue has gone away for me with yesterday's update.

Yeah, it's been a couple of days now since updating to NDE63V and haven't had any charging issues since. Crossing my fingers that it really was just a software issue. Time will tell.
Woke up to 35% this morning plugged into stock charger not charging. Plugged into an Anker Power Port 4 and viola' it charges. Found this thread, rebooted and stock charger works again. Verizon on build NDE63X. Don't know when the update came down.
Exactly the same ^^^
I had an issue where no charger could be reversed in my phone. The C cable would only charge it in one orientation. I RMAd the phone and got a new one. Now, I have this same issue where the phone will charge and stop a few times and then start charging with the OEM brick and cable. Works fine with the OEM brick and a different cable I got from Amazon. Even works fine with the OEM cable and my computer with a USB C port. I think it might be the OEM brick.
Just had this issue happen to me for the first time today. OEM charger, won't charge until I reboot the phone. When I use my samsung fast charging brick no issues.
Brand new pixel 128gb... Charged fine with the USB a-c charger but got this weird issue with the stock charger and cable ... Phone is only 2 days old... Seems software related... As stated... Reboot fixes it... I notice most people on Google issued pixels were fixed in last update... Maybe Verizon is behind on this
Verizon pixel build nde63x...
Mine has done this also. It was a problem on the Verizon build. I have since unlocked the bootloader and gone to the Google latest version and it still has the issue. I asked a friend if he had this issue and he said no but he had that issue on his Nexus phone.
I think the OEM charger is too loose. I've had that issue before (at work). Plug it in, it looks like it's charging, check it a few mins later and its not. If I push the cable in firmly it'll charge.
I have a Samsung USB C adapter that I've been using with one of my old chargers (at home) and I haven't had a single issue with it. I ordered 10 cheap USB C adapters off eBay. I'm hoping they work just as well. I have a bunch of Turbo chargers that I've accumulated from other phones so hopefully I can convert all of them and keep using them.... And still be able to charge older devices.

Tab 2 stopped charging while on, still charging but very slowly while off

Hi guys, I'm hoping someone has a solution... my Tab 2 (GT-P3110, not rooted, stock ROM, original Samsung charger) all of a sudden stopped charging while it's on. The battery icon top right has a red cross over it and the tablet slowly discharges, the same as when it isn't connected to the power source. If I shut down, it charges but slowly - it takes around 10 hours to charge to 100%.
I tried with other (albeit generic) chargers of 2A and more - same result.
Tried also a few things found on internet, such as charging while holding the power button for 1 minute, and similar...
Before I go ahead and start butchering it, has anyone had a similar problem - how was it solved?
Thanks!

I had similar problem with one of my tabs (I got a few 3113s). I tried (what i thought was) everything. Swapping batteries, flashing new roms, resets and such. The only way I found to fix it was to install a new motherboard.
I bought a used motherboard off eBay and watch an ifixit video. 10-12 screws later. It worked.
Just sharing my experience of the red x.
Here's a link to the seller I used on ebay. I actually had 2 broken tabs to fix, so, the bundle of 3 was right up my alley.

Ouch... the fix (and shipment to Europe) would unfortunately surpass the value of the tablet - can probably get a similar specs alternative unit for the price of motherboard...

In my experience, it just needs a new charger. When the charger doesn't provide enough electric supply to the tablet, the red x appears.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have tried with a generic (5V, 2.4A) and my other ASUS (5V, 2A) - same result.
Maybe is the cable - it has this wide Samsung plug which is hard to replace this neck of the woods, so it's difficult to check.... but that's also a bit counterintuitive, as the charging should be a binary thing - either it works or it wouldn't be detected at all - or is there more to it?
The battery must be changed. In my case I couldn't find the original spare so I just used a 3.7 v battery from a portable charging device ( it worked but not enough the charging cable is always connected... That's atemporary solution ) the red cross appears only on stock ROMs if you use any KitKat or mm
try install different ROM if the problem persists then buy new battery

i posted a somewhat similar thread, my bad. though my situation differs on a tab2 p3100.
mine does charge when power if off. however, it does not charge when power is on and the computer does not even recognize it. there is not even any error that a usb device is not being recognized, which is common error returned by windows when a usb has problem. all my drivers are okey.
and as well, the difference with mine is that i see no red x when my device is plugged in to the charger and powered on.
