Play store error: Insufficient storage available. Help. - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ive searched google and only found topics from a few years back, but for some reason Spotify and SoundCloud will not update in the play store. I get the "insufficient storage available" error. I have about 10gbs of space left over so that's not an issue.
I've cleared the data/cache in the play store and the individual apps and no luck. I've also reflashed Cataclysm thinking that would solve it but still nothing. Any ideas?

Don't know if this will resolve your issue, but have you changed your dpi? Might want to try downloading Multi DPI Play Store

I changed my DPI in the cataclysm settings to 82% but i went back to 100% and it didnt fix it. Thanks though. I read something that you can delete a certain file and it should fix it. I used ES file explorer to try and find it but i couldnt find the app folder.

Theres gotta be somewhat of a fix for this. No?

I had this also for quite some time, honestly I suspected an application who caused that message.
After a few days it got fixed by itself.
Maybe it helps to clear the cache

Yea, its pretty weird. It is only happening with 2 apps. Every other app updates fine. Its not a deal breaker as I dont use Spotfy and SoundCloud too much, its just annoying. I've also tried reinstalling the latest Cataclysm but I get a failed attempt everytime. We shall see.

I got the same error when I started using aoip 4.3, and it's just the amazon app for me. It works just fine, but it hasn't been able to update for weeks. I thought it was something to do with amazon's update, since it was isolated on only the one app.

yea now Netflix decided to join the party. Its pretty annoying. Im thinking about switching roms but Cataclysm is just too good.

-Uninstall the problem apps
-Look in /data/data for leftover files with the same or similar name (e.g., Netflix is com.netflix.mediaclient) and delete them.
-Try reinstalling the apps.

So I uninstalled all spotify, soundcloud, es file explorer, and netflix. I used root explorer and went to data/data and found just a spotify file and deleted it. Now they wont download at all and still giving the same insufficient storage error.

Settings>Apps>All
Force stop Google Play. Clear Data/Cache
Force stop Google Services Frameworks. Clear Data/Cache.
Reboot.
That has worked for almost every play store error that I've seen. Let me know if it works for you. Note that the reboot is important.

Ouch. Sorry man the cure all doesn't seem to work for you. Go into Play services and see what it says about Storage. Attach a screenie if you can. Worse case I'd reboot recovery and wipe cache/dalvik then format system and reflash again. Does cataclysm have gapps included?

Worst case solution is a data wipe aka factory reset. I had this problem on my old phone. That was always a sign it's time for a fresh flash and wipe.

I just got this same error for Netflix. I am running rooted stock 4.4.2 with XPosed (using GravityBox and RootCloak) and TWRP.
Error first occurred last night. No significant changes preceding, Plenty of storage left. Last significant change was the recent update to BusyBox (just throwing out anything). Can still update/install other apps. Since error I have updated my SU Binary.
Additionally I have a Nexus 7 running the exact same setup except for ClockworkRecovery instead of TWRP and it accepted the Netflix update without issue.
On the N5 I tried using TWRP's "Fix Permission" option (hell if I know what it does but why not), but didn't work.
Only other thing I can think of that is relevant is I had to re-flash everything about 2 weeks ago because my initial install had apparently set my "storage space" as 16GB when I have a 32GB device. But that issue is fixed and I've tried freeing up extra space just in case.
Edit: After more research I found one person who mentioned BusyBox along with the insufficient storage issue. I tried going back one release to 1.21.1 and restarting the phone but was unsuccessful. Was on 1.22.0, 1.22.1 just released so I'll see if that helps.

This is now happening to me as well. Two apps only, Twitter and Amazon apps.
I've tried deleting old files, reinstalling, one touch cleaning, you name it, I've tried.
Is the only way to fix this is to reflash ROM?
I'm running CyanogenMod, with Franco kernel on a 16gb Nexus 5.

Go data/app-lib and delete the relevant folder for the app your having problems with

Have you tried clearing data for market?
Please let us know if this fixes the issue.
I have tried that, it doesn't to anything.
Anyone else have some help for this guy?

Just did, tried to change from Canada to US. No luck. Very odd. I get FC after it tried to load up my apps.

Not sure what else you can try. Another thing I can suggest is clear data for Google services framework. Good luck
Also are you rooted? What version market are you on now?
Try this version if you're not already on it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329262&highlight=market
Last thing to do is wipe data and start clean.
Tried, no cigar. That is the version that is giving me grief. Very odd. it FC and gives me the process com.android.vending stopped working.
Maybe the only thing left is to do a full factory reset. Very stupid.
No mine is not rooted. Thanks for the help
FIXED! It was a bad version of Documents to go... Deleted and it allowed me to get back into my apps in market. Interesting
That seems odd but at least you're fixed

I'm having the same problem now. Clearing data on market and android framework followed by restarting the tablet fixed the issue temporarily only for it to happen again after a short while.
Also noticed other performance related issues, force closes, lock ups, etc. Also resulting in the same error message as the market app issue - process com.android.vending has stopped working.
Only had these issues since the most recent update from Asus.
I'm having the same issue, I go into the market, everything is good till I try and go to my installed apps. Then f/c everytime. Very annoying. I do not have documents to go. Will have to try and hard reset it when I get home tonight. Son of a *****.
Just reading this thread.... the issue isn't isolated to the transformer.... my xoom same prob, and solution....

Thanks for the heads up, hard resetting didn't do a damn thing. Same errors. Google Music launch equals market crash? Maybe?
All right guys I need some input here....
I cleared market cash and data, reverted to older market, removed sd card, remounted sd card, rooted and installed prime then revolver, tried installing the newest market apk to no avail. Called google to see what was going on with my account, they said it was fine and it was the hardware. I put my fiance's account info on my tablet and it downloads famously. Factory restored and put my account back on and I get "download unsuccessful, please try again" every time on updates and app downloads.
Using my account I can go to market.android.com on a pc and push the application/update to my device and it works fine. This is a pain in the ass to do all of the time though. Can anyone help before I start using this thing for a coaster?
P.S. The market on my thunderbolt and HD 2 work fine.
**UPDATE**I just left it alone for a couple hours out of frustration and it works fine now. Must have been on google's side with the big market makeover.

[Q] [q] Android Marketplace error "Download Unsuccessful"

Intermittently when installing apps from the market I get the above error. I've tried clearing the cache and re-installing the app. Neither has any effect. Anyone get the market to work predictably on the kindle fire? I'm using the app from the guide that calls for vending.apk
Uninstall vending.apk and use the one that ends in amarket.apk instead.
That causes the market to crash every time I try and launch it.

Strange, it works fine for me. I've never used the vending.apk always used the com.amarket.apk
Did you try clearing the storage or deleting vending one first? If that doesn't help, then I have no clue. I have no issues with the market with that APK.
Did you push it to the /system/app folder before installing?
I have it working perfectly, thus far. Cn you list apps that are failing so I can try it?
//Tapatalk.EVO3D//
Ok, I uninstalled the market app and cleared the card. I re-downloaded and re-sideloaded everything. I have the market. I can click install but the apps I want to install are stalling at "starting download". I'm on wifi, I can access the web fine.
Apps that won't install.
Google Music
Retro Clock
OTA rootkeeper
I just installed Google Music without error. Did you install the market from the system/app folder?
//Tapatalk.KindleFire//
I have the same problem. I installed the vending.apk in systems/app ensured all the permissions are correct (when they weren't market would insta-crash) so I re-installed, corrected permissions and it loaded but now whenever I try and download it hangs on, "Waiting for download to start"
Also if I search for say, "Official Twitter App" it will bring up the first 15/20 or so options covering 2/3's of the screen of 15,000 or whatever but there's no option to see more.
Is that normal? I've never used Android before.
Apps I've tried to download,
Busybox
Twitter
OpenVPN Installer
OpenVPN Settings
(BTW until there's a tun.ko don't bother with VPN...)
I had this problems too, i tried 10 diffrent versions of the market.
The solution was to clear cache and data from the "Download Manager" app. I also cleared cache and data from all google apps, but i think the download manager was the main problem.
Thanks for the tip to clear the download app data but didn't work for me...
I'll have a go with the other suggested apk tomorrow.
Problem Solved! / Solution? Not really.
I've got it working.
I have two different vending.apk files. I didn't hash them to see if they're exactly the same but they have the same size to the byte. One installed the phone market version and the other installed the tablet market version. The tablet version not only looks slicker but it crashed exactly once and after I restarted the device it's worked flawlessly as far as I can tell. Installed many nice apps.
My initial thought is that I missed a step in the process early on, serves me right being a script kiddie type and just following the steps instead of understanding why each step is taken. I think I've learned a lot about how security works in android from this experience.
Also, google reader on the kindle fire rocks. Get the articles to fill the screen and you can page through them like the best magazine ever written.
I got Market working by integrating it into the ROM through Titanium Backup. It seemed to be the only way I got it to work.

Just recently I came across this error more frequently. This only happend to on 4.1.2. Either on Stock Rom or Custom. Happend on my Note 2,the Note 10.1 and on my gf's SGS-2. Until then, having different phones over the years, different Android Versions, I never saw this error. Since its multiple Phlnes, Tablets and Roms over the years, there is no common connection what this could be. Except the Playstore and Android 4.1.2.
Any thoughts on that?

It could be some versions of Google Play services I think.
Changing your lcd density is one major cause.
Sometimes changing Roms without wiping triggers it too.
Hard to point out a single culprit when there are so many possible triggers for play store errors.

I always wipe for different Roms. But out of curiosity, what has changing LCD density to do with that error? Really strikes me odd that something like that could have anything to do with such an error.
However, it seems likely that Google screwed something up with theit Market Services, at least with 4.1.2. Didnt notice that error in other Android Versions.

I'm not sure myself.
Changing density makes some apps unavailable to you on most versions of play store, but on some versions, the app is still available, but downloading it causes an error.

It recently happens to both our phones (NOTE 2, SGS-2) and the tablet (NOTE 10.1) a lot. All have 4.1.2 running, different ROM's though. And every time deleting the Play Store data, removing the Google account and going into CWM for clearing Cache and Dalvik Cache is not an acceptable solution.
Why is this coming so often recently ?

It works for me again, however I don't see the point that I would need to do that when my native language is a different one. If thats a solution indeed, then surely Google screwed something major up. They can't expect people to switch language to English (US) just for that.

that's work with me ...
I want to know why this error happens.
I've had it before and wiping dalvik and cache worked after deleting google account and then re-adding it
However, that was 2 weeks ago and I downloaded some stuff but it's back again and constantly wiping and re-adding is some super BS.
Is there something I can do or anyone can do to get to the bottom of this?
It would help if we knew what exactly error 491 means as well so we could track it down better and squash this.

Yes, that works but its not the point. It'll come back, that error. And how often is doing that the point when there is no permanent fix ? I think, and I am really not good with stuff like that so I can't say anything I am really sure about, it is actually a problem with permissions. I am running the ARHD 8.0 on my Note 10.1 and the OMEGA v17 on my Note 2. Two different devices, two different Android Roms.
And yet, after (several times a week) get this Error, I go into CWM and "Fix Permissions". After reboot my Updates start working again on the Market. Until next time. I dont know if that has something to do with it, but it seems too big of a coincidence to just be random, if the "temporary" solution by "Fix Permissions" is making it work again.
I have no idea why that is but I don't seem to be the only one with that Problem as it seems. I dont know if what I assume has any value or is just an assumption but I think it might be worth thinking about it. However, why 2 different Roms on 2 different devices seem to have that problem in common I really dont know.

Thanks man, I will try that. I just did that Permission thing 10 minutes ago, so I won't see the difference right now. But if the Problem does not come back, I for sure owe you a beer.

P.S: However, by doing that I disable Google Location services entirely. Isn't that kinda counter productive in case of other location dependent things going on ?
Worked for a while, now I get the same error again. Even though Location Services are still deactivated. This is one hell of a annoying error and persistent like hell.
If that continues I will go back to Stock Rom since I have never seen that on my gf's stock SGS-2 yet. Wonder if thats only custom Rom related. Really making me wanna buy and ..... no I wont say it.

At first I thought wow! Another error but I just remembered I had tb clear the cache for all my apps and dalvic. So just rebooted. No deleting or fixing permissions

apps reverting back to previous versions randomly.

most specifically my Facebook app. whenever I force quit it or reboot the phone, my Facebook app reverts back to an old version. it says its the most up to date version when I check the version # and there's no updates available. I am rooted and have turned auto update off on the app within play store. this is really obnoxious having to uninstall and then reinstall the app multiple times a day bc the old version is AWFUL. any help would be appreciated GREATLY!

stock ROM and 4.5.10. its actually not just or force quits and reboots but that generates the problem 100% of the time. I noticed sometimes when I go to my Facebook app it'll just be an old version. although it has the same and most up to date version when I check the version #. when I uninstall and then install again its back to the newest version. reverts randomly a few hours later.

Is it only the Facebook app doing this? I'd try wiping data/cache for app, going to recovery, backup, wipe data/cache, reboot and try to see if problem persists. If it does, something between the Facebook app and google play is not working correct.

it is the only app doing it that ive noticed but since im fairly new to android, its hard for me to tell older versions from new ones, this one is just SO obvious and frankly that old version is just awful.
i wiped data/cache from the app, went into recovery and wiped cache partition but didnt wipe the data, i assume that completely wipes the phone? sorry like i said i have only had this phone for 2 weeks from long time iphone user minus a short stint with a moto droid in 2009.

It's perfectly fine. Yes, don't wipe the data since that will wipe everything. But, since this did not clear up the issue, it sounds like a Facebook problem. I've heard many people complain about layaway build. Best thing I could say to do is try uninstall, reboot phone, and try reinstall. If that doesn't work, I'd try to find last version Facebook apk file (or current Facebook version apk file) NOT from play store, install, and wait for Facebook to fix the app from this problem. Still seeing possible other way to fix. By installing apk not from play store would allow phone to hopefully not reset to old version since play store doesn't realize you have Facebook anymore (since not from play store). A quick work around until fixed.
If this is facebook only, it might very well be a Facebook problem. Especially when you say that it changes even though the version of the apk stays the same.
Facebook has been testing the new layout by having both the new and the old one in the same apk, then they enable or disable it server side by accounts in order to try different versions of the new layout for different people and see the different responses in usage and so on. This sounds like a bug with that mechanism inside the Facebook app, and is not fixable as such. I for one have yet to see the new layout on my device.
You could try clearing the data for the facebook app to see if that helps.

Weird issue after restoring apps with TiBU

Basically I have backups for about 130 different apps, games, etc. After I setup my ROM (Mahdi latest update) I used titanium backup pro to batch restore the apps. Just the apps, no data. So I was trying out xposed framework and saw instagram downloader. I thought it sounded cool so I set it up and installed it. I tried testing it by logging into instagram and trying to save a photo. Instagram crashed (fc) right off the bat. So I went back to the module page and saw the latest update was to make it compatible with instagram v5.1.4. So I went to play store and saw the version of the latest instagram version... 5.1.4. Here's the weird part. It only had 2 options. Open and uninstall, which led me to believe it was up to date. So I went to settings/apps/ instagram and I was running version 5.0.8. Back to play store and still no option to update. I had to uninstall it and install it back again to get the correct version.
Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else? Currently going through all of my user applications and manually matching the app info version with play store version to see if any more are facing the same issue. This is my first issue using titanium on the phone so far (that I know about)

I'd say not really. That seems to be a sync issue. Just didn't recognize the purchase on the phone. Thanks for your reply, but I'll try to explain a little better.
Normally when you have an outdated app installed that is on the play store, if you visit that apps page on the play store you will (normally) see 2 options. Update or uninstall if I'm not mistaken. Or open and update. One of the 2. My issue is that after restoring instagram from titanium backup, the play store saw it as up to date. There was no option anywhere in the play store to update the application which was on 5.0.8. Correct version being 5.1.4. So because it saw it as updated for whatever reason I couldn't update it to correct version. I had to uninstall it and install it again to get the correct version.
So essentially;
Check instagram on play store to see if update is available for it. Says there is none and that all of my apps are up to date. Go to app settings and see instagram isn't really up to date. Go back to play store to confirm there is no update. There is no option to do so (play store thinks app is fully updated). Must uninstall it and when I install again it is up to date.
So naturally if it didn't recognize an update for one of my apps I'm assuming there's more. I always leave auto sync on, but I'll see if there was a sync error. I don't think that's it, however. Probably going to take this up in the tibu thread as well.
the play store doesnt see if you need updates right away, it can time time. when apps are released, one person can get/see an update a day or two after another, even though the app is updated for everyone. plus, if you just restored, the play store would have to sync first before you saw it as new.

The thing is the update(instagram) was released 9 days ago. I know updates take a few hours to push to the public after a developer releases it. I just tried to replicate it again by uninstalling it and restoring from titanium. Same issue. I'd had all my apps installed since the 13th. The day the latest mahdi update came out. It should have caught it in 6 days. :/
Still stumped.
Besides if that was the case that the update hadn't been pushed to the play store yet, it would still show 5. 0. 8. Not the new 5. 1. 4

If you read my OP that's exactly how I got it up to date....twice
I'm saying my issue is that the play store has recognized an application as up-to-date after being restored from tibu when it is indeed not up-to-date. Can't be because I didn't get the update pushed to play store yet, because the update is already on play store for me.
After trying a couple things it has become all too apparent that this is most likely an issue caused by titanium backup. I will continue to troubleshoot there from now on. Sorry, but I don't seem to be successfully getting my point across here. Thanks for all your replies, though.

na. i have memories of many times in the past 6 years when the version showing for me was the updated version, yet i was still on the older version, and didnt show me an update(especially with google app updates). at a later point that day i got the update. if you know that an app got an update, yet you didnt at that point, i bet itll still show you the version thats updated.
It's been at least 6 days since ROM install. 9 since instagram update. I wasn't on the latest version. There should have been an update button in the play store on instagrams page.
This is the first time ever seeing this since the Droid X, X2, stratosphere, toro galaxy nexus, n5... I never keep auto update on. Back in the X2 days an app got updated automatically and was no longer compatible with the phone. Just force closed. Couldn't roll back. Since then I always updated manually and kept an eye on app versions, etc. If I didn't pay attention to that stuff or try xposed I probably would have never noticed it.
right, but you also restored a backup. id think that would change things, until your phone resyncs everything, which isnt always right away also.
What exactly do you mean by syncing? In the last 6 days I've had quite a few play store notifications telling me there's updating to the following applications. I remember specifically, multirom, Google camera, ez weather, screen filter and ecodrive just off the top of my head. Instagram wasn't there. Yet I keep auto sync in and I checked after your first reply. There was no sync errors. Everything was checked off and refreshed within 40 minutes of checking. :/
So to confirm, you wiped data in play app? Do it again

Ironically, no and yes. I was messing around after I noticed that. I found an app called Recovery Tools on the play store. I figured I'd secure my data by flashing stock recovery and locking BL. Don't know why but I got the urge but I used to do it on my toro nexus. Anyways I made the mistake of locking my boot loader with boot unlocker and then flashed stock recovery. Phone went haywire. Tried a cache wipe from stock recovery but it did nothing. My phone booted, to my surprise but I was met with nonstop sysUI and gallery FC. I ended up having to scroll through my apps in between FC to open boot unlocker and unlock again. Then since I had no systemUI I had no home keys so i had to reboot again go back to the recovery tools app to flash my recovery backup I made before doing this. Long story short (too late) I had a bunch of stuff reset. Most of my system settings. Anything that had to do with systemUI. Even opened play store and was prompted to accept the terms of service again. Still showed no update for IG
I'm over it for now. Tonight I'll check my app info versions and match them with play store. Luckily xposed has a module to put a play store link in app info so it should be quicker!! Hahahaha
Anyways I'll bring it to the attention of the tibu dev in their thread if I find any more apps that aren't up to date on my phone, despite play store telling me they are
Does TB still have the break market link feature in settings? It's possible that got activated somehow. If it happens again go to menu. Then Market Docter. Market Update helper will also get you the update. Just some thoughts.
