[Q] i cant connect my xoom mz601 to flash drive by otg cabel?? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

can any one tell me how to connect my xoom to the usb flash disc by(otg) on the go cable ,it is not rooted device and the OS is 4.0.4 ice cream sandwich ,model mz601 ??

Hi,
AFAIK it was possible to connect an OTG Cable and a flash drive on it without problems on ICS, I can't tell you for sure though.
I have JB in mine and the only problem I face is mounting my external HD, but for that I use an app, however it requires root... Don't know if this will be your case though.

I guess it should be possible for xoom. The problem might come from the type of your otg or your flash drive. Some flash drives theoretically are not readable in android device since they require bigger power source, especially those above 8gb. Yet, i have never encountered flash drive not readable in Xoom with otg since I think Xoom can provide more than enough power for anything plugged in it. I even have my Xoom handle flash drive, mouse, and usb keyboard with my multiport otg and all work normally.
However, you might consider such reason for flash drive not recognized in Xoom. Maybe you can try using your otg and flash drive in the other android device to see if they do work. Or at least try plugging flash drive with smaller capacity such as 1 or 2gb

If i may know, what app do you use to mount external HD? Mine does not even spin when I plug it to Xoom via otg.

Hi,
I use the app StickMount by Chainfire to mount the HD. Hope you can manage making it.

Accessing Usb thumb drive.

I have been working my way thru several posts tonight but still can not access my thumb drive.
Wifi xoom running tiamat rom. Official Motorola camera connection cable. Sandisk cruzer USB thumb drive formatted to fat32.
I have a folder labeled usbotg on the xoom (not on the sdcard) but nothing shows. Whati step am I missing?
can you show us the outcome of "df" on your xoom?

Did you download the latest version of the USB Mass Storage Watcher app from the market? Also, I have found that when I insert a usb drive, I usually have to reboot to see it in the /usbOTG folder.
qwerp - "df" ? Is that an adb command? if so I assume I need run it after I have inserted the USB?
okantomi - Yes I installed it, but it does not see that I have plugged in a thumb drive.
A little more info - my USB mouse works without a problem - The light on USB/USBs flash and then does become solid.

df is the command you run in the terminal to see devices mounted on your drive.
if you are running the latest tiamat kernel, you do not need the USB watcher.
you see something like
/mnt/usbOTG 1G 1G xxxxxxx
also, can you do a "ls" under /dev/block/ ?

I'm not sure if its a power problem or the unusual way the built-in Sandisk software mounts the drive (it mounts as a "cd drive" in Windows); but Sandisks are problematic.
If you can, please try another thumb drive just to be sure. Preferably, one with no lights (to minimize power requirements) and not a Sandisk or Kingston, which both use proprietary built-in software upon insertion into PC usb ports.
Try downloading an app call USB Mass Storage. Its not in market but I found the thread. Hope it helps.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068999
Try flashing the kernel in that thread through recovery. Make sure you flash the correct images first.
When I run "df" in terminal i get/data/media/extrenal and /mnt/sdcard.
I am going to flash the tiamet kernal seperate from the rom and see if that fixes things.
Might be obvious to everyone else but when I first plugged a drive in I noticed two folders called usbOTG, one in the root and one in /mnt/usbOTG. The one in the root is always empty and the one in /mnt is the one I need to access. Again, not sure if relevant but just thought I'd share

I just looked at my Xoom's file system again, and actually, the relevant usbOTG folder is on the root. It's on the same directory level as the internal sdcard that contains all of your apps. There is also a mnt/ folder that contains the external sdcard as well as another usbOTG folder (among other things), but that one is empty.
I apologize for having given a wrong location for the usbOTG in the past. I was being lazy.
Edit: I don't know, it's possible that your file system may show usbOTG at a different location, but I just checked again, and mine is on the root. Also can completely hot-swap, no reboot needed. (That's for fat32.)

Did you reboot while the drive is connected? And of course, are you using a tested usbOTG cable?
Had you been able to connect/use the drives on HC3.1?

I tried to reboot with stick connected , but nothing !
I received the cable yesterday ... after the update to 3.2 , so i don't know if the USB stick works with 3.1.
mmmmmh... about the "tested cable" ... mine is not a cable but an adaptor ... and i hope it works
i can't get mine to work either. Using the same things you are. I have the official motorola cable for it. Never rooted in 3.1, didn't root til 3.2, so no idea if it would have worked then. I am wondering if it is the kernel that is causing this issue. Cause i have seen others post of the same problems with this kernel... Relly wanted this to be working. Go into the hospital thursday for surgery, be in there a week. Wanted to be able to load files off thumb and portable HDs to watch movies on. Can't do either now
Working Now
I initially had the same issue with my USB drive. I then pulled the usb drive out of my "official Motorola OTG cable" then plugged it back in and it now works well. Backed up by SD card to my USB drive . . . no problem.

If you can update to the new Tiamat Manta Ray rom you will be guaranteed to have usbOTG function with the free USB Mass Storage Watcher OTG app. It's now working like a charm with the Motorola OTG "camera kit" adapter.

Yes! You need an OTG cable, such as the Motorola Camera Connection Kit. There are others available for less money, but you have to make sure it's really OTG, because it has a different pin configuration.
In addition, you may need to use one of two free apps to help mount the drive--USB Mass Storage Watcher OTG, or Drive Mount.
I've found that it may help to reboot with the drive plugged in (at least the first time).
With this set-up you can use a thumb drive or a large HDD.
My Xoom is fine but my friend bought one and he cant otg with 3.2 unless he roots, right? ... The toshiba does otg out of the box. This was his major buying point. Anyone know why xoom m doesnt yet others will? And yes, he has otg cable.

I tried both of them n failed in both
The drive mount requires busybody. But after installed it, the drive mount apps keep DC.. couldn't use at all
And for the USB mass watcher, when i launch it it asked me to download the latest version, but the latest version isn't compatible with 3.2
What should i do now =(

Sure it is compatible with 3.2. I use it.
Also it's busybox.

I'm not certain if an unrooted Xoom can really access OTG/usb host mode. People say that, but I have been rooted from the start, so I never tested it out.
But i can't even download it from market @@
I jhave it now butkeep fc . Argh
Yeah, I have been rooted since day one as well, so I was unsure of the stock 3.2...

Are you sure you have an OTG cable?
Also, what are you trying to connect? Some people have had issues with thumb drives but not with an HDD.

Does it dim or does it crash? If it dims and you can't do anything, try turning the Xoom (like from landscape to portrait), with auto-rotate enable, and if a dialog box opens, choose an action.
If it is crashing, can you try an HDD like a Passport?
not dim nor crash. The device just suddenly go black n have to boot up

Mount phone as USB storage via USB

Hi,
I got my TF300 today and tried to connect my Nexus S to it to transfer some data but it does not get recognized by the Tablet. If I connect it to the dock's USB port nothing happens. Is there a way to make this work? Bluetooth is damn slow for transfering greater files...
Edit: Found a workaround. It works when you boot your phone into clockwork recovery and choose the option mount as USB mass storage. Its not the ideal way, but it works.
Is there another method to get my phone mounted?

[Q] OTG USB memory

On my current Galaxy Nexus I can connect a USB memory stick through an OTG (On The Go) cable and read and write from and to it (root required for write).
How about the Nexus 5? I would not buy it if it could not do that.

Great! Thanks.
Can anybody else confirm this just to make it entirely certain? Has anybody tried to write to USB mass storage?

I've just used Stickmount to mount a USB device and successfully written 2 files to it, so I can confirm USB OTG is working just fine.
But you have to use a 3rd party app in order to write to a usb OTG flash drive or a simple file explorer is sufficient??
Also, you guys mention that no root is required, does this differ from 4.3 ??
On my Nexus 7 II with 4.3 I have to root it in order to use one of those 3rd party apps in order to write files on the usb disk. Is this correct?
The device does not have any mounting capability by default, so you must use apps (or a custom kernel) to do it. That means root.
Wow great to hear this. I have to return my N5 due to a faulty speaker, when i get a new one might drop down to the 16GB now if it has OTG.
Well this is great to know. I didn't want to open my nexus 5 until this was confirmed. I hate that the nexus 4 didn't have this functionality and its the only major gripe I had with that handset. Has anyone tried it nexus 5 with dualshock controllers or keyboards and mice??
OK so I tried it with USB keyboard mouse AND dualshock 3 working great!

To my knowledge you can read from USB memory without root rights, but to write you need root. Example app: StickMount.

Perhaps it is planned obsolescense. They don't want us to be able to expand the memory. They want us to buy a new phone sooner, rather than later.
At least I can find no other explanation.
Can somebody confirm if this is working with 4.4.4 without root? if yes which app?
CyanogenMod 11 M7 has OTG capability built-in
Just a remark on the sidelines. There was the wish that Google include OTG capability in their stock ROM.
They have not done it, but Cyanogen has. CyanogenMod 11 has OTG USB memory capability. Since version M7 it even includes exFAT in addition to FAT32.
So if you really want this capability, there is a way.
