[Q] OTG USB memory - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On my current Galaxy Nexus I can connect a USB memory stick through an OTG (On The Go) cable and read and write from and to it (root required for write).
How about the Nexus 5? I would not buy it if it could not do that.

Great! Thanks.
Can anybody else confirm this just to make it entirely certain? Has anybody tried to write to USB mass storage?

I've just used Stickmount to mount a USB device and successfully written 2 files to it, so I can confirm USB OTG is working just fine.

But you have to use a 3rd party app in order to write to a usb OTG flash drive or a simple file explorer is sufficient??
Also, you guys mention that no root is required, does this differ from 4.3 ??
On my Nexus 7 II with 4.3 I have to root it in order to use one of those 3rd party apps in order to write files on the usb disk. Is this correct?

The device does not have any mounting capability by default, so you must use apps (or a custom kernel) to do it. That means root.

Wow great to hear this. I have to return my N5 due to a faulty speaker, when i get a new one might drop down to the 16GB now if it has OTG.

Well this is great to know. I didn't want to open my nexus 5 until this was confirmed. I hate that the nexus 4 didn't have this functionality and its the only major gripe I had with that handset. Has anyone tried it nexus 5 with dualshock controllers or keyboards and mice??
OK so I tried it with USB keyboard mouse AND dualshock 3 working great!

To my knowledge you can read from USB memory without root rights, but to write you need root. Example app: StickMount.

Perhaps it is planned obsolescense. They don't want us to be able to expand the memory. They want us to buy a new phone sooner, rather than later.
At least I can find no other explanation.

Can somebody confirm if this is working with 4.4.4 without root? if yes which app?

CyanogenMod 11 M7 has OTG capability built-in
Just a remark on the sidelines. There was the wish that Google include OTG capability in their stock ROM.
They have not done it, but Cyanogen has. CyanogenMod 11 has OTG USB memory capability. Since version M7 it even includes exFAT in addition to FAT32.
So if you really want this capability, there is a way.

Yes! You need an OTG cable, such as the Motorola Camera Connection Kit. There are others available for less money, but you have to make sure it's really OTG, because it has a different pin configuration.
In addition, you may need to use one of two free apps to help mount the drive--USB Mass Storage Watcher OTG, or Drive Mount.
I've found that it may help to reboot with the drive plugged in (at least the first time).
With this set-up you can use a thumb drive or a large HDD.
My Xoom is fine but my friend bought one and he cant otg with 3.2 unless he roots, right? ... The toshiba does otg out of the box. This was his major buying point. Anyone know why xoom m doesnt yet others will? And yes, he has otg cable.

I tried both of them n failed in both
The drive mount requires busybody. But after installed it, the drive mount apps keep DC.. couldn't use at all
And for the USB mass watcher, when i launch it it asked me to download the latest version, but the latest version isn't compatible with 3.2
What should i do now =(

I'm not certain if an unrooted Xoom can really access OTG/usb host mode. People say that, but I have been rooted from the start, so I never tested it out.
But i can't even download it from market @@

Yeah, I have been rooted since day one as well, so I was unsure of the stock 3.2...

Does it dim or does it crash? If it dims and you can't do anything, try turning the Xoom (like from landscape to portrait), with auto-rotate enable, and if a dialog box opens, choose an action.
If it is crashing, can you try an HDD like a Passport?
not dim nor crash. The device just suddenly go black n have to boot up

[Q] What's a file explorer that can r/w to OTG USB?

I have the meenova micro SD OTG reader and the only way i can access files from through my phone is from TWRP when i flash roms and such. I want to be able to move files back and forth from my phone using the Meenova but i've only seen peopl;e suggest nexus importer but it doesn't really work for me that well, I'm using root explorer right now and it doesn't let me access my usb otg. Basically i want a file explorer that let's me use the meenova to move files and not have to boot into twrp to have to do it and i dont want to have to pay a fortune for an app that will let me do this.
Hi,
Take a look for these apps: https://play.google.com/store/search?q=stickmount&c=apps&hl=fr.
Apps like Stickmount have a free version, you can test... After that I use Root Explorer without any issue.

Re,
Yes , for my usage I use Stickmount (the free version). Once the USB is mounted I can move, copy, delete the files. With Root Explorer the path is /sdcard/usbStorage/sda1.
Depends what you want to do. Apps like stickmount are ok if you just want to read/write data on the card through a file explorer. However since these apps dont mount correctly (mount in sdcard for non-root users), they're useless if you want to move game data onto usb otg. Fir that you need it mounting in /storage so custom kernel like chaos is what you'd need

Im sorry, I don't understand the question. Does purity say it automounts USB otg in its list of features? Most roms / kernels do not offer this.
I only know 1 kernel and 1 rom that does. Chaos kernel and Mahdi rom. This doesn't mean more don't do it but I don't know the features if every rom or kernel.
Browse to /storage on the root of your device to see what's there

Sorry, and it does not mention it in the ROM features and I don't have the USB otg with me at the moment I'm in school. But here is what it shows me now.
*note* the SDA 1 is what I just added to see if it would mount there later on as vicking said above.

The attachment doesn't work.
If you use stickmount, it will mount to /storage/sdcard0/usbStorage/sda1
Chaos kernel mounts to /storage/USBdisk

ES used to (on 4.4.4)
I did notice that my Thermal Seek camera (also USB OTG) works fine with Lollipop, so I guess ES has to be updated.
Yes, I forgot about ES. It does open it. I had been using solid because I like it better but I also forgot that stock Android is NOT AOSP and that was my problem. It does see it now with ES so, problem solved. Also it reads both fat32 and NTFS. too bad it doesn't read exFAT

That is so strange - I use ES and I am not able to get it to recognize my USB flash drive! Sheeeeeeesh! :crying:
Well we are all seeing strange things with 5.0 For example, root is not working as it should, apps like App Quarantine can't seem to properly disable some system apps or Google Apps, I can't seem to be able to correctly install a recovery and most apps that should allow to do reboot options (like flashify or twrp manager) don't work. My guess is that we'll have to wait a few days until development has matured a bit..
Then, I can use/see/write my USB by otg only with Es explorer without stickmount or I have to use stick mount mandatorily ?
sorry if you give the answer already but did not understand English very well
Always i used stick mount, but it would only need/use ES Explorer
I can only add that on nexus7 (2013) official 5.0 OTG doesn't work either.
I can access external drive through ES or stickmount, but the system itself is 'blind'.
Using custom kernels (e.g elementalX) built for lollipop which in theory should support OTG break stickmount (and still no OTG support, possibly something in OS beyond the kernel) - internal memory is not mounted anymore to /storage/sdcard0. ES still works though.

Yes, you can just use ES Explorer to use USB OTG devices. No need for stickmount.

Yes in 5.0.
I have the google stock image, rooted with CFAR and all I use is ES Explorer to see my USB OTG. You have to be in either NTFS or Fat32 for it to read the drives.
It does show as a USB 1002 like you say and if you click on it it will open a new window with the contents of the drive. That's all I do.
No tweaks or apps to mount the drives.

Hi all,
I can see on ES Explorer the US1002 tab like you, and if I click on it, I can see the file inside the USB storage, but i can't put other files on the drive, even if I try to create a new file, the app show up a pop up with the message "unsupported operation", instead the copy from the USB drive to the phone is possibile.
This happens since I flashed the Stock Lollipop build.....
Have you tried to copy or create a file on the drive?
Many Thanks! Bye!

Yes, I get the same message. You can read files, copy them TO your phone but not copy from your phone to the USB OTG. I guess we will have to wait for some developer to patch things or for AOSP roms to catch up...

Probably kernel related. Might need to export to usb otg properly. Probably mounted with no permissions. You can check when OTG is plugged in by typing the "mount" command into a terminal emulator

I can only assume not many users are actually using mass storage devices. Which is a supprise given the storage limitations.

Mount exFAT USB storage

I am using the Elemental X 1.01 kernel that lists exFAT and NTFS as both supported. I tried using the built in storage mount and it just wants to format the drive. I then tried Stick mount and that just seems to lock up it's mount service. How can I read/write my exFAT formatted USB drive?
Saw your post elsewhere. The only time I've done this in the past was by using TWRP file manager. At first the drive couldn't be read, so running fix permissions did the trick. Other than that, I'm thinking you'd need a custom ROM. I honestly don't know what's out there at the moment that would work for you.
I have tested MiXplorer (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1523691) this evening with exFAT and was able to read and write data. To enable goto Settings/More Settings/Enable OTG.
This Works Great!

I like to use my phone to edit GoPro Videos. I had a Galaxy s5 that I would use an OTG cable to read the file off the micro sd card. I got the pixel xl and I was disappointed that I could not read the exFAT files. After reading this post and instaling MiXplorer it works perfectly. A big thanks to you for posting this, and another BIG Thanks to HootanParsa for creating MiXplorer.
EDIT>>>IGNORE THIS I GOT IT.
I just installed Mixplorer on my Pixel XL and have a USB-C flash drive formatted in exFat, turned on the OTG Driver but I can't get my flash drive to show up in Mixplorer. Am I missing something?
