Are Google Play RMA units new? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good day,
I am curious, are the RMA units from Google Play directly brand new phones, or refurbished/repaired ones? And is there any way one can check on the N5? (I read about the RTN menus, but that doesn't seem to work for me).
Thanks!

I´m interested in this because i´m waiting for my replacement

Yes. They send back a new retail unit when doing warranty replacements.

Refurbished

Most likely refurb and has been fixed

Yes even I'm interested in knowing this.
Does anyone know how long it takes to get the replacement?

I think they are new, at least in my case. But all 4 of them have had defects on the screen (dust?) and I am waiting for my 5th device...

I had to replace my Nexus 5. The CS rep at Google said that all Nexus 5 replacements were new. Hope this helps.

If all the replacements Nexus 5s are new... Where goes all the Nexus 5s we send them?

Ordered online will local store replace?

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this. I ordered my phone online and it has a dead pixel. Do you guys think my local store will exchange for another one? I did not buy with a contract. I would hate to go with out my phone...especially now that I am loving THIS phone.
what store did you order it from? i think most national chains will replace your stuff in store. not positive though.
Amazon is very good about exchanges within 30 days if that's where you got it. Otherwise you can call 611 I had one captivate replaced by amazon and one by AT&T

If you ordered from AT&T online a cor store will exchange for you. If you purchased from an agent like Wirefly they will not.

Hey gunny! I followed you on the captivate and now have an inspire. What I did fellows is speak with an account executive about my ****ty captivates performance and they offered me the inspire for the contract price. Great deal and awesome phone. I am kind of bummed that I found a dead pixel. So it appears a core store will exchange? I hate to exchange it....over one stuck pixel. Hope they don't think I'm being a **** or anything. I just know its gonna bother me down the road.
Ugh. I got like 3 dead pixels stuck on the top right corner, barely noticeable...but I notice it. did you get it replaced?

Yeah. I just got back from the retail store about an hour ago. It kind of sucked because the pixel was so small and they could hardly see it. It was stuck in green which didn't help. I have very good eye sight. I can even see the pixels on the iPhone 4 screen. Eventually they were able to see it and replaced the phone. They were amazed at how I got the phone without a contract though.

Does the Google Play Nexus 5 ever go on sale?

I know it just came out, but I do not need to buy one until February. Should I wait?

If you are waiting for Google Play Store, please don't wait for them. The best you can do is get free shipping or playstore credit. For retail, the price starts to come down after a few months. If it is close to Christmas, Easter or any major holidays then there are great deals to be taken.
On a new device like this, Google doesn't usually reduce the price. They may offer additional incentives for the holiday season, such as Play Store credit, free shipping, etc., but that's about it. The price won't be reduced until just before the next nexus phone is released, probably 4th quarter 2014. Of course, there's always the possibility of some crazy event affecting the norm... but I wouldn't count on it.
Phone is already cheap for what you get. Check out the Moto G for $200.

on sale!!?? just like the other user said the moto g mite be the phone for u.. the N5 is already crazy cheap for what u get.. do be honest one of the main reasons i got the n5 is the development it gets.. this is my first nexus phone and i love it.. i have had some many top of the line phone in the past 3 years and none of them come close to the love this phone gets.. i will never get another htc one.. or a galaxy phone again... im sticking with nexus:good:
I am fine with paying $349.That is a great price for the phone. What I am trying to decide is whether to purchase it now or wait for February when I will actually get to use the phone. I want to purchase it now, so that I can have it already. However, if it it might get reduced between now and then, it would be wise to wait. In the past have the prices stayed constant until the new model came out?

I'm done with Galaxy phones too. I booted up my S4 today to update it to the new MK2 OTA update because I'm getting it ready to sell. After a few weeks with my N5 I had already forgotten what a pain in the a$$ Knox is. Never again!

[Q] Is it a good time to buy a Nexus 5 (Defects)?

Well so basically I have been considering gifting my mint S3 to my sister since she needs a phone and I have been thinking about getting the Nexus 5 for a while, almost pulled the trigger today but did a little research and was shocked by so many units coming out with defects which concerns me since I am studying abroad in the Dominican Republic and its very complicated to go trough a RMA process. I am considering the 32gb black model from the USA play store, from what I have heard Google/LG have done a few improvements to serial number 312k. I would like to know if under these circumstances is it a good time to buy a Nexus 5? What are the chances of getting a 312k serial unit?
I just cannot understand how can so many units come defective, I have yet to see an iPhone with these kind of issues but it is not just an LG issue, many manufacturers are suffering from this.

I got to say I am starting to get quite skeptical about the defends vs the prima donnas in this forum. I ordered my first one after reading after all the threads and it was flawless. Then I ordered a second one and it also came flawless. What are the chances I am just that lucky?

Wait for half a year. Then go for it. That's June. Almost guaranteed you will have no defects.
And @cas8180 you just got major ****ing lucky with those two. I envy you. I got light bleeds.

Motocare VS Squaretrade

Just wondering everyone's take on the two, as I'll be ordering my moto x pure on friday.
If the warranty is voided by unlocking the bootloader, how does squaretrade work? I've never used them.
Moto's plan is much cheaper overall than SquareTrade. When considering the up front cost and deductible. And Moto's plan can be used twice during the 2 year period. For me the choice was easy.
If doing a claim with Moto is a slow hassle, it will be no worse than claims I've had with Squaretrade.
Do you have to buy the phone through moto to sign up for motocare? I got it from Amazon.

If you purchased the phone on Amazon, there's not an option under "My Stuff" on the Motorola site to purchase Moto Care. They know about it and are working on a fix so those of us who bought from Amazon should be able to purchase it soon. I don't have the link on me, but in the Motorola support forums there's a thread about the issue.
Went ahead and signed up for moto care, too good to pass up. One cracked screen will pay it off

I originally had the motocare in my cart but after reading the fine print I decided against it. They don't cover lost/stolen and if the phone has excessive damage they also won't cover it. I don't plan on dropping my phone and running it over but you never know and I don't want to have to worry about if my device is going to be covered when I send it in.

No basic warranty covers lost or stolen phones. If you want that covered, thats what home owners insurance is for. If you tied a string to your phone and to the back of your car and dragged it, obviously it won't be covered. Accidental damages are fine like drops on the floor and what not. But if you dog got to your phone and chewed it up, that probably won't be covered. Pretty much anything that can be repaired will be covered.
Square Trade is good.
I've had a tablet and a camera claim.
Tablet - they gave me a full refund on a two year old device.
The camera, they sent a replacement in a week.
Square Trade doesn't care about software. They warrant a device.
I also read the fine print and decided to forgo the Moto Care, since the the payout on a cracked screen is low enough to make it not worth it. However I'm very curious about these two companies handle real world issues.
If its true that Square Trade is cool about refunding a whole device after two years, then that makes their 3yr $40/year plan a great deal.
Tell me what happened to your camera and tablet. Did they charge you the $75 deductible when they replaced them?
I just cancelled my moto care and got the 3 year square trade for $119.99. It covers up to 4 claims. Hoping I'll never need to use it but I'm sure if I do, 4 is more than plenty.

Soldering Iron. Specifically that would be a hard brick, not a soft brick.

I'm just joking everyone. Lol. Ordering mine today.

I'm never going to pre-ordering a pixel phone again.

I preorder my pixel 3XL at the initial announcement. Yeah, but with all these Black Friday great deals I really regret pre-ordering. I wish I would have waited. Being a project fi customer for a long time I feel left behind or forgotten by Google.

If you paid with a CC you might check with them. Often times they'll allow you to price match within a certain amount of time.
This does happen pretty much every year so I don't think any manufacturers are hiding their cards.

Sorry man. But where have you been? Every BF deal is half off like.. forever? October release orders are for those that are rich and don't give a crap. They get it a month before everyone else for bragging rights but the rest of us paid half what they did. And we only waited a month. Live and learn and as I've said before.. never ever buy a device other than on BF. 'Nuff said.
I bought mine on launch day and returned it within the 14 day period and bought a one plus 6t. I just ordered the Pixel 3 xl, at 700 bucks its a no brainer compared to the OP6T for 570. Next year I will wait for black friday again.
The original Pixel XL was the last phone I got right when it came out. Project Fi has $200 off up front, $200 credit for bill payment. Tack on $285 for my Pixel 2 XL. Now you know for next time.

I bought my phone with the Costco Citycard. They have a price protection program where you can call in and get the difference in price refunded for any item bought within the last 60 days. I called in and got my claim set up. I sent them a copy of the itemized receipt from Google store showing full price and then one of the advertised Google store price. Now waiting and according to email they sent within 2 weeks I will get the difference back on my credit card.

I submitted my price rewind with my Citi Double Cash card :highfive:. So hopefully it goes through and if it does my 3XL will only end up costing me $400~ for the upgrade give or take.
I'm with you, but for a different reason. I'm on my fourth 3 XL. I RMA'd my 2 XL twice. I think this one finally might be ok but 5 warranty replacements over 2 devices that cost a grand each is ridiculous. I might would have just went and got an iPhone Xs Max if I hadn't been past my return window.

I normally wait for the second batch and never pre-order in the past. but my Nexus 6p was literally on his last leg so I had to move forward with the pixel 3XL it's a great phone and all but now looking back I wish I would have picked up a cheap phone just to get by for a month. this pixel 3XL is also going to be the first phone that I'm not going to root, it's totally stock, even the bootloader is still locked. it's also the first phone that I'll be using a case and screen protector with.

Screen issues on the 2 XL and speaker issues on the 3 XL. Two of the returns before Google confirmed they were working on a fix for the distortion. This last return, I had what I thought was screen burn in in the status bar of the notch, which I now think it's intentional but I sent pictures to Google support and they agreed. The bottom speaker on it also seemed much more distorted than the previous two. The 4th device, which I have now, seems much better in the speaker even though there is still some white noise. I'm hoping Google does actually fix this.

Do you feel like your phone has any problems? If you don't then you're better off not trying to look for problems and go into a RMA nightmare and get a phone from the Google store that you can't OEM unlock and go into a continuous loop of frustration and wasted time and money.

I returned my xl for a replacement which got to me in 2 days.
Two days after I've received the second pixel I noticed black Friday deals come in. I ordered yesterday another pixel (the third one) and my second pixel (replacement) I'll be returning once google ships me the retun box. Should be any day.
