Updating to 4.4.1 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to manually install this with stock non rooted but I only see the option for installing via adb and not SD card is my recovery messed up or something?

On stock recovery you have to use adb to sideload

Ahh so you can't install via SD like old updates?

soething like this also happened to me when i tried to flash cm11 to my xperia sola it was because the kernel i was using was not supporting the ROM once i "fastboot flash boot boot.img" , boot.img given in the zip folder i was able to flash the new ROM. Best of luck
Did you flash the boot.img over pc or on the phone?

I support. This seems like a boot.img problem. Try to make it via PC while the phone is in fastboot mode.
This is for a galaxy s3, would download/odin mode qualify as a fastboot mode? :S

I tried flashing boot.img in recovery, it failed. Anything else? :/

Any other suggestions would be helpful

I would recommend using the latest twrp. I find it much more reliable than CWM. Just my two cents.

Make a flash able zip for boot.img.
.img cannot be flashed through custom recoveries. .
Only zip file can be flashed.

I used TRWP and compressed the boot.img into a zip to flash and attempted it but I get a failed message.... Should I just scrap it throw away the phone at this point? Nothing seems to work...

Use flashify and you don't need adb and fastboot. There was a Google + that explained the whole process.

All of the OTA zips I found are for 4.4 to 4.4.2 or 4.4.1 to 4.4.2.. Which one do I download? Out do I need to return to 4.4 and then upgrade again?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
You can get the Google stock images and extract all the files out. They are tar'd, zipped and gzipped. You need system.IMG for the /system partition, you will also need boot.IMG, and if you want to upgrade your bootloader you will want the bootloader.IMG, if you want to upgrade your radio you will need the radio img

Adb push

I know how to use adb and I'm not too inexperienced with it. Is there a way that I could push files to the system partition without having root on the device? I'm on stock ROM and I do not want to unlock the boot loader or root it, I just need to push a file to the system partition.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I am pretty sure you can only push files to the SD card without root. Rooting/ unlocking doesn't hurt. Try helium for a backup.
I know it doesn't hurt, I just came back to the stock ROM after using my own compiled ROM. I just didn't want to mod it except that one file, thanks though

You should be able to do it in custom recovery

Am I able to boot into one without flashing it while my bootloader is locked? I do not want to unlock my bootloader
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Not without unlocking your bootloader.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Okay, if I decide to unlock, I can use adb to backup my data partition before the unlock and then restore it after I unlock right?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Hmmm. Not sure if you can access /data without root via adb. Helium backs everything up so maybe it can. Try it. Im never unrooted enough to know

Here's a good guide to use when performing an adb backup. No you do not need root.

Stock recovery?

If I root (towel root) install custom recovery then unroot and factory reset will I have stock recovery back?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
no, factory resets only wipe your user data, they dont magically reinstall software. but you will after you.. a. flash the factory img, or b. flash the stock recovery via fastboot.
all info and guides are linked in my signature. Lots of reading but lots to learn.

You could extract the recovery.img from the stock rom and flash it
Just discovered flashify oh man its amazing
