Stock recovery? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If I root (towel root) install custom recovery then unroot and factory reset will I have stock recovery back?

no, factory resets only wipe your user data, they dont magically reinstall software. but you will after you.. a. flash the factory img, or b. flash the stock recovery via fastboot.

all info and guides are linked in my signature. Lots of reading but lots to learn.

I support. This seems like a boot.img problem. Try to make it via PC while the phone is in fastboot mode.
This is for a galaxy s3, would download/odin mode qualify as a fastboot mode? :S

I would recommend using the latest twrp. I find it much more reliable than CWM. Just my two cents.

Make a flash able zip for boot.img.
.img cannot be flashed through custom recoveries. .
Only zip file can be flashed.

I used TRWP and compressed the boot.img into a zip to flash and attempted it but I get a failed message.... Should I just scrap it throw away the phone at this point? Nothing seems to work...

Great app but this isn't an official one.
The XDA thread has been closed and there's no update on Google Play for 2 months.
I don't know if jmz still has other projects... Flashify is also a great app to directly flash the img files without a PC.
I heard that
Code:
fastboot flash recovery TWRP.img
works pretty well...

It doesn't hurt to know all the options and procedures. Actually OP would have already known this if he hadn't used a toolkit to root in the first place
-1 for toolkits
But yes, options are:
Fastboot flash img
recovery install zip
Flashify flash img
Thanks to all for the help suggestions , but yeah I used a tool kit which means I don't know how to do it manually that's why I asked for the easiest way to update .

It would be good to learn how to do it manually. It's really pretty easy. And you'll know your phone better and know how to do things yourself.

Urgent help!! Somehow unrooted?

Please I need your help. I booted into CWM and then rebooted from there. It then said fix permission so root will not be lost? I clicked yes and now when I booted I have no root. But my Google animation is unlocked. Please help, what have I done!

That prompt always screws things up, sometimes either if you press yes or no. Should stop using cwm really. Use Philz or TWRP.

Download the SuperSU .zip from here.
Reboot to recovery.
Flash .zip.
Reboot system.
Root restored.

You panic to fast which can make you make misstakes, read the first 4-5 threads in the General section well so you`ll know whats happening and for how to deal with and fix issues
Thanks so much!!! Can I install Xloud mod or beats audio thru the same method? Do I have to clear cache ?

Yes, zips go in recovery or with flashify and img files in fastboot or also flashify, no you don`t have to clear the cache.

I don't know from experience, but you're probably best off reading through the mod's thread and looking for compatibility issues. Most devs will write in the OP if there's a known issue, but you can't necessarily count on it. Best bet is always reading and/or searching.

Read the OP`s of the sound mod`s if they`re compatible with odexed stock, i think they are but better check it.

No. You can't flash system.img file via flashify. It has to be done via fastboot.

Why do you want to flash the system.img via phone? If you're looking to get to stock /system without a computer, then you can download vomer's stock 4.4.4 rom and dirty flash it!

If it has been converted to a zip you can flash it. Which system image are you trying to flash?

[Q] Root Flash then Revert Without a PC?

Just wanted to know if its possible to root (towel root) flash custom recovery and custom roms and then if I decide to later revert totally back to stock unrooted nexus without a PC. Ive attempted to read up on this but I'm a little confused that ill need to use SDK and ADB which i can't have access to at the moment or have the skills to use.
I've seen apps on google play to unlock boot loader once towel rooted but I'm just unsure if i can revert totally back to an unrooted nexus 5 with original recovery, without a pc as I'm using an iMac and having really unreliability with it :/
Id greatly appreciate any help :good:

There are a couple different options.
I'm not sure if flashify requires a unlocked bootloader. Root, flash custom recovery with flashify, make a backup. When you are done either restore backup or if stock already use flashify to flash stock recovery, delete root apps, unroot via supersu.
Boot unlocker I have heard will work to lock and unlock boot loader but I'm not sure about resetting the tamper flag.
Using fastboot and adb is always going to be the surest and safest way to root etc. Unless you are going to be submitting your phone for RMA there should be no reason to unroot. You can always flash a stock rooted ROM and just leave it.

Steps are;
-Download boot unlocker fr on play
-Download flashify from play (just in case)
-Download vomers stock ROM (number 6 in resources section in the link in my signature)
-Download stock recovery (number 7 in resources section in the link in my signature)
Firstly, flash the recovery zip via your current recovery and reboot
Then, reset The tamper flag and lock the boot loader
Finally, open SuperSU and use the full indoor option to remove Root
Good as new.
