I'm pretty sure you can install it in custom rom or any rom. And s-off doesn't have anything to do with that.

Thank you. But today you can't install paid apps on Magio R3 and SolidRom. Magio R4 will fix the problem, according to the dev.

Its a HTC security measure which stops your ability to change the system example with s-on you can't update superSU binary, can't delete system apps and can't install busy box

Well being able to delete system apps is a kernel thing.
S-off will allow you to flash Rom from recovery without having to fastboot kernel also allows you to write to any blk so in the future when HTC updates your firmware you won't have to go back to stock and take the ota you can flash new firmware useing fastboot. This is a blessing from the android gods. You should do it before HTC closes the exploit

First, when it tried to update, it said "something stinky", i don't now if it was a success or not
Second, pouring til 8 times, ended with "wait 30 seconds, pray and boot"
Is something wrong? I think i fulfill everyting needs before

That's incorrect, s-off, or security off, has nothing to do with system write protection, which is what you're referring to.
S-off gives you the ability to write low-level unsigned files to your device, such as bootloaders, splash images, etc.
The two are completely different things, and you can have one without having the other.
I'm on hboot 2.21, stock odex stock rom 4.4.2 rooted but for some reason, renove or rumrunner doesn't work for me. Rumrunner gets stuck on 8 out of 40 or something after rebooting. Renove gives me -1 or -2 error and doesn't s-off, can anyone tell me what's wrong? I've followed the instructions perfectly, even flashed the recommended rom..

Not now there has been more development no, but this was the case with the m4 to start with, you couldnt do anything to the system without it, for example deleting a system app no matter what you done to delete it would just cause the phone to instantly reboot and the app still be there, i know this personally from experience with my own phone, thats why i said this.

Regardless, you're still not talking about the right thing. That has nothing to do with being S-ON/S-OFF. That's system write protection which is totally different.

yes i know its different things BUT you couldnt write or delete from the system properly without s-off when development for the m4 FIRST started look through a few other threads you'll see what im saying is true so stop going on about something you obviously havent looked into properly, just because thats not the case now or not the case for other phones DOESNT mean it wasnt before, like i said i know from personal experience, that comment was posted months ago trying to give someone else info and is now irrelevant so whats the point in even bringing it back up now?????
Edit: unless your just trying to be picky because i didnt word it to your satisfaction so ill rewrite it here for you......
to update superuser/superSU, delete system apps or do anything to modify the system s-off was required to achieve this otherwise the system would just reboot and the changes that was attempted to be made wouldnt be accepted by the system.
happy??

And I've looked into this to know what I'm talking about. System write protection is in the kernel and has absolutely nothing to do with S-OFF, no matter the device and the M4 is/was no different.

and by months ago i mean the comment of mine you first commented on
Edit: besides i never said s-off and s-w-p was the same thing, i mearly said that at the time s-off was required for the ability to have the ability of writing to the system as at the time there wasnt any custom kernels which could achieve this, well stock kernels anyways due to lack of the release of the source code, but i cant be bothered to respond to you anymore all its doing is spamming the thread needlessly, i know what im on about due to like i said dealing with it myself.

You need to elaborate a little more if you want some assistance.
Do you have s-Off?
What is your baseband number? That will indicate what radio you have and will give others an idea of where in the process you are.
Assuming you made it far enough in the process to get s-Off, you can just flash the ota stock ROM by attn1, which will have the OTA radio in it, if it turns out you are on the downgraded ROM/radio.
If you have anything other than the stock kernel/ROM on your phone, then the rooting was at least partially successful. You probably just need to get clockworkmod recovery installed correctly so you can install custom roms.

Yup, that looks like the downgraded radio the hack kit leaves you with.
S-Off basically means you can flash stuff. "Security off"
So as Gene said, you're partially through the process. You just need to get a good ROM/radio on.

ok man i just want to get my phone back to stock... is there a way that i could just do a FULL wipe of the device? ive tried doing it through the hboot way and going through the settings and doing the restore but both were unsuccesful

Now that you are basically rooted there is not necessarily an easy way to get back to plain stock.
It can take a while for the average user I believe using the s on tool... but considering I do not have all of the info I will let someone else answer your question in full.

Go back to h boot, if it says "Ship s-off on the very top of the screen you should be all set. Make sure clockworkmod is installed. if not download rom manager from market and flash cwm through rom manager. Next go to the development form and find attn1's stock OTA update with radio. Download the file to your computer, place it on the root of your sd card. Make sure the file is named PD98IMG.zip, turn off phone and boot into h boot, when it says apply update? Press vol up and watch the magic happen. Also make sure there is no other files named PD98IMG.zip on your sd card as this will cause trouble. You will still be rooted with s-off but that's ok, I mean your were already trying to root, just cause you lost sound doesn't mean you should be afraid of rooting. Once you fix your problem and get a good handle on things, you'll be in love!

Hello all, just got the MT4GS I have latest boot loader and update previous owner did it right before I purchased.
I thought we should get together and see what works and what doesn't.
I have tried the temp root method and SuperOneClick and the official HTC unlocker to no avail.
I know on some phones its possible to downgrade using some sort of official package or signed update. Is there such thing for our phone?
Threads I used for reference:
[APP]SuperOneClick v2.3.2 - Better LG Phone Support!
permroot for S-off MyTouch 4G Slide
Anyone notice the MT4GS Bootloader Unlockable?
Poking at latest OTA update for fun and profit

There has to be a way to get this done. I found a signed and stock firmware and instructions

To undo the update/restore the stock firmware that came with the phone:
(Note: this will only work if you are still S-OFF even tho you have the new HBOOT version. If you are S-ON with the new HBOOT, then at this time there is no known way to revert... hopefully we can get the devs. of Revolutionary, etc, to update the root methods. Also, if you want to update just to check it out, make sure to turn S-OFF first if you'd like to give yourself the option to revert later.)
1. Download the stock firmware package from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1178082
2. Rename it PG59IMG.zip and put it on the root of your sdcard.
3. Boot into the bootloader('adb reboot bootloader' or power down the phone then hold volume down + power), let it read the update package, and press 'volume up' to update when prompted.
4. At the end it will prompt you to press Power to reboot. It scared me because when i pressed Power, the screen went off and seemed to not come back on, so i pressed power once again, and it booted into the system.
That's it! Just remember that if you do this, it will of course erase all your data... your phone will be like it was out of the box.

It won't work because the version is too old obviously. These are specially crafted archives with data in the beginning of the archive. You can't modify the android-info.txt because it throws off both winrar and 7zip.
I tried changing the version number in a hex editor. This makes the crc fail. Is there a way to just alter the crc to the new CRC? This way when HBOOT checks for the checksum it will pass and downgrade. I know for Unreal Tournament based games hackers would use a method called bytehacking where they are able to change certain values without upsetting CRC checks. Would something like this be possible?
I found a tool that recovers it and fixes it I have to try flashing in HBOOT but I doubt it will work I'm afraid the important data in the beginning. Maybe if I sign it, it will work?
The latest idea I had was using the OTA update, it contains a firmware.zip what if we modify the contents of firmware.zip with the contents of the stock firmware? You can flash using fastboot (i hope) as it will be formatted as an update and will downgrade the hboot as well.
are you S-ON? i mentioned in that post that it will only work if you happened to have S-OFF from before, which i did. but so far no one has been able to do anything with S-ON and the newest update. have you tried Tacoroot?
The search button is your friend ._., there are 5+ threads that share information and methods none of which work but the people on said threads are putting information and ideas out there.
Sorry noob question, just got the Mt4gs and It's updated to newest, how do I check if I am s-off or s-on? Also in short what does s-off/on mean? Thanks in advance.
Doubleshot on XDA App
Power the phone off with fastboot turned off. Or pull the battery when you power on hold the lower volume key and power simultaneously to boot into hboot. It will tell you S-OFF /S-ON. If you have latest OTA you're most likely S-ON.
S-Off: This term is used when describing the security radio. With S-on only signed ROMs may be flashed, when S-off unsigned ROMs may be flashed IE custom ROMs.

You could flash the Sense 3.0 ROM before the Vodafone upgrade
You may need to create a GoldCard to be able to flash it (if you have a different CID).
But in order to remove any stock apps, you have to be S-Off or HTCdev unlock your phone and either get root on your phone or install a custom pre-rooted ROM.

See this post here on how to create a goldcard. The goldgard is needed in order to bypass the CID check of the official RUU (or to "fool" the CID check). And then you'll be able to run the RUU you want

deadphone..... Really?
Do you know why nobody's answering your questions? Because they indicate that you haven't done any reading whatsoever, and you're too eager to jump into stuff you haven't the slightest clue about. I suggest you read up about android in general, how stuff works on this device in particular, read about bricks that have been made off perfectly good phones because of reckless flashing and following the advice of other novices, who have no idea what they're suggesting... And when you think you're done reading, and know everything there is to know,..... read some more!
I only say this because you and your very helpful "guide" friend here are dillydallying with things like RUU, goldcard, CID hacks, etc.... which is more advanced stuff than you're equipped to handle currently, and this thread looks like a disaster waiting to happen.
Do you know what trouble an incompatible RUU can get you into, if you don't use it correctly? Just S-off your phone and flash a custom ROM man... there are so many stock, pre-rooted ROMs available!
Wait. Patience. Read. Tutorials. Guides. Those are what you should be looking for...........not RUU, Goldcard, CID, Misc_version. You're not there yet.

Nothing.
If you haven't figured it out even now...go ahead, make a Goldcard, and flash a 3 RUU on a Vodafone branded phone. See where that gets you. Do you think CID is the only thing an RUU checks when upgrading a ROM?
I'm sorry if I offended you... maybe you could try out what you just suggested to that guy on your own phone and educate me... I seem to have gotten my concepts wrong.

Have to agree with you there, this RUU thing is very dangerous if not handled properly. I've already had an issue flashing the wron RUU, which resulted in my bootloader saying *****Security Warning***** and also i became S-off! Had to take it to HTC, but fortunately they didn't make an issue, and replaced my phone. Have stayed away from RUUs ever since. From what i have read, just making a goldcard is not enough... you need to change Misc_version too, or something like that.

You never provided any details about your phone... I didn't know you were still s-on!! Why didn't you mention that anywhere?
i didn't think it would be relevant at the time, now i know this next time i start a new topic i will include details about my phone. Anyway, the details for my phone are:
hboot 2.00.0002 s-off unlocked with htcdev so what can i do now?
I dont know anything about s-off because i dont have a htc but i do know when you are rooted you can use es file explorer or root explorer to delete apps.In es settings set system as read/write and then navigate to /system/app and delete any apk you want but dont get carried away because you can mess your phone up.Just delete the pre-installed apps you dont want.

First of all I thought that this is a community where everyone in here is supposed to help each other and not to start flaming or using irony to say to someone that he may be wrong.
We weren't all born to be experts or geniuses like you may be so you could be just a little bit polite when saying to someone that "hey you are wrong because from my experience you need to do this or that".
I'm new in the Android platform since I've been an android user for only 1,5 year but I believe I managed to play a bit with it, since for the last 7 months I'm constantly "messing" with my old devices.
And no I didn't get offended, I just don't like to see great communities, as XDA, lose their good name / status.
No hard feelings though.
The S-OFF or HTCdev unlock, flashing a custom recovery and installing a custom ROM may be the "easiest" way to do it, but what if the user didn't want to have a custom rom?
As for me trying the suggested method on my DS, well that's what I did in November to my DS, before I decided to go with a custom rom in January.
My DS, even though I got it from a Greek mobile operator (COTE), it was branded (with CID: T-MOBN14) but without any 3rd party apps. Other friends in Greece with DS have a CID: HTC__001 or another that I don't remember it atm but it stands for HTC_ELL (Greece).
After reading the 6th post of this thread, I simply did what you can see on the posts #286 & 288 in this thread.
I don't know if I got lucky or not but my DS worked flawlessly until the 1st week of January when I decided to unlock it using HTCdev, flash 4ext recovery and install CoreDroid.
Based on what I did, I suggested to deadphone99 to go with the Goldcard solution.
Anyway, I'm sorry if I just got lucky and my suggestion may caused deadphone99 to get a dead phone

Go to this thread and take it from the beginning, you will find answers to all your questions regarding the S-Off, custom recovery and flashing a custom rom
So I am a noob to HTC phones. I understand what S-Off is but I am not entirely sure what I could with my phone with it that I can't do now. I am trying to understand whether I should go through the process since there is always the risk of bricking. Thanks!
I have no idea what S-Off is :/ i need some enlightenment

I did do that. It said that I could flash ROMs, Radios, stop my bootloader from saying unlocked. Most of this things with the exception of the last I can already do. I was just wondering if there is something that I could be missing out from. Thanks!
Contrary to popular belief, s-off actually has very little to do with your phone being rooted. S-OFF stands for Security-Off, which basically allows you to modify any partition on the device, and changes will not be reset upon a reboot. Also, the signature checking of the firmware zips is disabled, allowing users to flash unsigned firmware zips containing the separate images of the partitions.
Very simply put, that's what it is. There is a lot more to it that you guys can probably look up. For a user on an hboot below 1.14 it really doesn't do all that much, but it's very useful for devs and people post-hboot 1.14
I'm not totally sure what it will do for us, but it was easy enough for me to go through with it, took about 5 minutes if you've already got ADB/Fastboot set up.
I heard it could take away that stupid red paragraph when I boot and that was all I needed to hear haha
I feel like I just got a new toy but can't read the instruction manual... can I flash a new radio? do I need to do something special like flash through fastboot?
I know I sound like a broken record but
I'd love to see someone create a dual boot program for our phone.

You got to wait for the new tools to be released. Nothing happens automatically AFAIK.
You can flash ROMs on newer hboot without fastboot

so how do you get rid of the red text on boot??? and also how can the unlocked/ tampered flags be reset (while staying unlocked)

Things will come, just have to give the devs a chance since we just got s-off.
SouL Shadow gave an excellent response to the question here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38169711&postcount=2462
But as already indicated, things will come in the future, it really doesn't gain much at the moment. Especially for those still on pre-1.14 hboot (and can already flash radios, kernels from recovery).
I am currently stuck in the bootloader. To make matters worse, I relocked to RUU and am stuck at Sending with that. I am Super CID which I think is the problem. To make matters even worse, I no longer have my unlock_code.bin file.
Is there any hope for my phone? Also, the RUU process has completely wiped my phone. Thanks for any input in advance. I have searched and searched for an answer but haven't found anything useful.

You haven't given enough information, what are you trying to do? You could just unlock your bootloader again.

How can I unlock my bootloader without the unlock_code.bin file? Update. I reverted back to original CID CWS__001 and am going to try and run the RUU again.
I tried to s-off my wife's phone and it screwed it up somehow (rather I screwed it up). I simply wanted to take it back to stock to start fresh and now I am stuck in the bootloader with no Rom and a locked phone.

You would just go to htcdev like you did in the first place and go through the unlock process again. But, you can't do that now because you just changed the CID back to CWS__001 which is blocked by htcdev. And I'm guessing you didn't succeed in getting s-off? If so, you've just used the one and only time you can change the CID without s-off to change it to a CID which is blocked, which means you have no way to unlock the bootloader again, ever. I hope your original plan was to stay stock because that's your only option now. Maybe that's for the best though, you seem to be doing things without fully comprehending what you're doing or the potential catastrophic results.

Thanks for your input. I appreciate it. Can I at least ruu the 3.18 now and get back to stock... That's better than bootloader I suppose. By the way, how could I have unlocked in the state I was in?
Ruu is stuck at sending for some time now.

If you have a locked bootloader and the correct CID there should be no harm in running the RUU. The unlock process (from memory, I could be wrong) doesn't require the phone to be booted into an os, it's all taken care of while the phone is in bootloader. That's kinda irrelevant now anyway as it isn't possible anymore.
Are you using the usb cable that came with the phone? You can try using a different usb port, usually the ones on the back of the pc tower are the best.
May I ask, how exactly do you think the s-off process screwed up the phone? It either succeeds or fails, and there should be no serious repercussions from either.

Ever since I ran the s off process I couldn't copy anything to the sd card, I.e. to flash a new Rom. I feel like an idiot for changing the cid back now. I ran the zip for s off and I waited an hour or so and it never went throufh

It sounds to me like you might have actually done a factory reset from bootloader which corrupts the sd card. The s-off process has no ability to change the sd card. Did you have HTC drivers and adb/fastboot all installed when you tried the s-off process? That's probably why it didn't work.
The corrupted sd card might be why the RUU won't work, can you still get into TWRP recovery? If so, you can use the mount menu to mount it to your pc and format it. If not, you might seriously be in trouble. The combination of these things you've done have possibly rendered the device completely useless. If this if the case, I hope this has been a learning experience. It's really important to have a firm understanding of what you're doing (and the results and potential risks) when modifying your device. It looks like you've rushed into all this without understanding it all properly.
In any case, let me know about what I asked about above and I'll do my best to see if there's a way out of this.

Took your advice about the usb port. Switched it to the back and the ruu worked. Will I be able to run the root exploit again? Yes, this definitely has been a learning experience. Coupled with my lack of sleep and overall frustration I made some bad moves. Thanks for your patience and help though. Much appreciated.
And no, I could not get back into recovery after I relocked it. It would send me right back to the bootloader. Also, I did do a factory reset from the bootloader. Believe me, taking mental notes all the way here.
Sent from my HTC One XL using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Now that you have a working os, you could be able to use the exploit again to unlock the bootloader etc. Just take it slowly though, do some reading so you gain a bit of knowledge. And if you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask.

Very glad to see you got it all working again. S-off might seem daunting now, but it's a pretty straight forward process as long as you follow the instructions exactly.

Yes, I have done it before, on my One X. Not quite sure what went wrong. Maybe the issue with my wife's phone was preexisting and reared it's ugly head in the process. I have been rooting and nodding phones for years. I am not a complete noob. I am experienced in java programming and have created many interesting applications for my phone. Perhaps I should take my java knowledge and automate my s off experience.

If you're looking for an automated method, I saw this just before. It's brand new but it looks to have some great tools incorporated. I prefer the manual method myself but many people will love this.

Appreciate it. I don't mind working from the command line either. Could my trouble have had anything to do with being plugged into the front of the cpu, for s off that is? Was getting stuck at sending with the flash zip command.

Just wanted to let you know that I went through s off and all went well. Only thing I can think was the problem was that either there was a pre existing corruption on the phone, or the usb port I was using.

It could have been anything. It's becoming more and more apparent that different things halt the process for different users. It makes it really difficult to troubleshoot when helping someone through the process. In the end you got it though which is great.
