Ok so i have the htc inspire and i tried to root it today, which didnt work out lol... but anywase whenever i try to play music or do anything that involves sound on the phone it dosnt work? i have a feeling that it may be a kernel issue but im not sure... my kernel is 2.6.32.2d now i dont know what the stock kernal is but im pretty sure this isnt it, so if you guys know anything about this or what has happened to my phone please tell me... thanks
It might help if you state what method you used to try to root, how far you got, and why it failed.

You need to elaborate a little more if you want some assistance.
Do you have s-Off?
What is your baseband number? That will indicate what radio you have and will give others an idea of where in the process you are.
Assuming you made it far enough in the process to get s-Off, you can just flash the ota stock ROM by attn1, which will have the OTA radio in it, if it turns out you are on the downgraded ROM/radio.
If you have anything other than the stock kernel/ROM on your phone, then the rooting was at least partially successful. You probably just need to get clockworkmod recovery installed correctly so you can install custom roms.

Yup, that looks like the downgraded radio the hack kit leaves you with.
S-Off basically means you can flash stuff. "Security off"
So as Gene said, you're partially through the process. You just need to get a good ROM/radio on.

ok man i just want to get my phone back to stock... is there a way that i could just do a FULL wipe of the device? ive tried doing it through the hboot way and going through the settings and doing the restore but both were unsuccesful
Just flash it eith rom i had same problem i use attn1 method i flashed with rom coredroid and all is fine
htc desire hd/inspire
Now that you are basically rooted there is not necessarily an easy way to get back to plain stock.
It can take a while for the average user I believe using the s on tool... but considering I do not have all of the info I will let someone else answer your question in full.

Go back to h boot, if it says "Ship s-off on the very top of the screen you should be all set. Make sure clockworkmod is installed. if not download rom manager from market and flash cwm through rom manager. Next go to the development form and find attn1's stock OTA update with radio. Download the file to your computer, place it on the root of your sd card. Make sure the file is named PD98IMG.zip, turn off phone and boot into h boot, when it says apply update? Press vol up and watch the magic happen. Also make sure there is no other files named PD98IMG.zip on your sd card as this will cause trouble. You will still be rooted with s-off but that's ok, I mean your were already trying to root, just cause you lost sound doesn't mean you should be afraid of rooting. Once you fix your problem and get a good handle on things, you'll be in love!

I ran into a few problems getting back to stock until I remembered a minor detail from my HTC Hero days.
You need to download and install HTC Sync get it here install it.
Reboot your computer
make sure the phone is NOT in USB debug mode and is in charge only mode.
the proper drivers will install. you'll know it's done right if you see ADB pop up as one of the drivers installed. You'll see a warning that HTC sync isn't detecting your phone and that's ok.
Then run the RUU exe all should work fine.
Get the RUU exe from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952224 This is FROYO

Happy to be of service. I can't dev my way out of a paper bag, well I've never tried, but I can share what I do know.
I tried to run the RUU but it failed twice. Both times it would get about 70% finished and it would stop with an Error 110 which says that a file is either open or corrupted. Then it tells you to download the RUU again and run it again, which I did but got the same results. I downloaded it with the anti virus and firewall turned off. Is there another site to download the file from?

Either flash a different rom via Clockwork Mod or run the RUU. If you choose the RUU, be sure HTC Sync is installed, USB Debugging is checked and Fastboot is unchecked.
Thank you! It works!
Just used this thread to get my Inspire back to stock before taking it back for a refund and cancelling service. Decided to go with the HTC Evo3d from Sprint. This method worked returning the phone back to the latest (Gingerbread) and unrooted it from Cyanogen (CM7) ROM. Thanks a ton for sharing your wisdom!

I take it you're not S-OFF? HTC (and probably others) decided they didn't want users reverting to older versions. You'll have to root, get S-OFF, before you can revert, but if you're rooted, you might as well just use the new andTether from google code:

So, this thread is all I need to do that???? Can it really be this easy????

Nice to see you around again gunny
I am new to this rooting stuff and been spent most of yesterday learning and asking questions. Here is what I did and some questions I got from it.
1. I rooted using the guide from ace hack it, took me a few tries but got it working.
2. Noticed I went from GB 2.3 to 2.2 after it. So is there a way to get to 2.3. This will lead to another question a few.
3. I loaded my first Rom off the SD and it was Leedriod. That gave GB 2.3 but was having difficulty with gps. But I was happy to know the rooting and Rom laps worked for me.
4. So I tried the offical ATT RUU through usb and HTC sense. It worked but also put me back to stock. Is this a way of putting your phone back to stock? I do have ace hack it on the phone because when I reboot I can get into it but if I select recovery from the menu it seems to lockup my phone.
5. Is the term Rom and RUU interchangeable? I see people using both or am I reading it wrong?
Thanks for any help. I have been reading pages of this stuff and its making my head spin. I just wanted to ask some questions to help understand this better, since I'm new to it.

Oh I forgot one.
A lot of instruction say to 'clear cache'. How do you do that? Is that the wipe cache option I see from the ace hack it menu?
Thanks

Ruu=Radio Update Utility
Rom=the OS you see/use on the phone.
When you ran the Ruu, you unrooted your phone. You'll have to rerun the Hack Kit to regain root but not S-off and to be able to flash a different (preferably custom) rom.
Do you have a preference for Sense or AOSP?
I figured that I had to rerun which is ok with me.
I don't really use sense because there aren't many options to it. So I would try asop but o don't know what is

If you're S-OFF, all you have to do is flash ClockWorkMod recovery to regain root; no need to redo the whole hack kit.

If you ran the RUU, it will return you to a stock ROM, but you are still S-OFF which is the biggest hurdle in rooting your phone. If you want to root after running the RUU, just flash ClockWorkMod recovery via HBOOT and then install a rooted ROM.
That's dang good info. From what I knew, you had to rerun part of the hack kit to reboot. How does flashing CWM root the stock rom?

Easy enough to get the real answer. When I first saw you call it Radio Update Utility it didn't sound right. So I googled it. I saw about 4 names that people gave it including Radio Unit Upgrade but then I thought where did I see it before. Oh yes, right from the upgrade utility.
So I tried recovery again. And my phone keeps getting locked up. The device appears with a red triangle with a red exclamation mark. So i tried the downgrade from the hack it kit. It worked but i still get the same thing. So i tried reverse gold card and i got a error. The same that i got before i reformatted the SD to get the root to work.
So later today, I will reformat and run the hack kit again. I am probably going to try Coredroid ROM.
Hi there, I've got CM7 with S-OFF on my Sensation right now and I'm going to give my phone to my aunt since I upgraded to a GN
Just wondering, what's the easiest way to get it back to stock and wiping it too? I need it so that it'll start getting OTA updates again.. doesn't really matter if it stays rooted (I'd prefer that but whatever is easier..)

S off is not the reason you're not getting OTA, custom recovery would be the most likely culprit. To see if you are s off, poweroff the phone, remove battery, replace battery, hold volume down and power, release the power button but keep holding the volume down, H Boot should appear, it will say s off or s on.
Did you buy the phone new or used? Have you flashed any custom ROM?

has anybody tried downloading the stock rom from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178082
then renaming it to pg59img.zip, putting it onto the root of your sd card, turning off the phone and holding the power and vol dn buttons and letting it flash that way?
then, just follow normal procedure for s off and root that is also posted here in the forums.
i'm pretty sure the package overwrites the hboot, also, unless this is disabled with the new version.
would somebody try that and let me know?
S off is permanent l. Even if you flash a newest bootloader
What I meant was that there seems to be some people having trouble obtaining s off and maybe rooting with the latest hboot/update. If you were to simply roll it all back by flashing a pg59img file from that stock rom, it would put it back to a workable state. Correct? I don't have the latest update/hboot and I already have s off so I cannot test myself.

looking back thru the inital update thread, jonnycat26 threw out the suggestion of possibly using a goldcard to get past the S-ON..... any possibility of this at all? i don't know a whole lot about that process, but i did use it on my friend's dad's Inspire 4G. i'll do a little reading and see what exactly the idea behind it is.

A friend of mine asked if I could help him fix his phone. He is a noob and so am I but I have rooted several phones and flashed many ROMS on all sorts of phones with no issues. So I would a least say I am pretty tech savvy. Here is the dilemma- If I hold volume down and power I get a white screen with some options such as hboot, fastboot, recovery, factory reset, simlock & image crc. It also says S-On....which I believe is the problem. He says that he though he downgraded to 2.2 before rooting but couldn't be sure but says he was originally on 2.3.4. I can boot into recovery CWM, mount usb/SD and load roms but no matter what ROM I load it will never get passed the HTC screen. Can someone tell me or at least point me in the right direction as to how I can achieve S-Off? Also I must note that he made no backups prior to his rooting attempt (Ughhhh!). Is there an easy way to get S-Off when the phone seems to be unlocked, rooted & CMW installed? Thanks a bunch my fellow XDA Einsteins.
I didn't think you can have a recovery without s-off for the shift... You could run an RUU and use one of the root guides we have if someone with more experience can't cone up with an idea. Of he did downgrade to 2.2 he should of used the shiftrr.exe to root

No worries, no need. Not offended.
Sounds like something got screwed up during the RUU process of downgrading. I've run into a similar issue when running the ROM Update Utility and it put me back to s-on but It kept my custom recovery. Same thing, no matter what I flashed I couldn't get it to boot. Your best bet is probably going to be run the the RUU. It will depend on which version of bootloader is on the device to which RUU will work. I can't remember the specific number but I believe the 2.2 bootloader is something like 93xxx something or another. If that's the case then you should be able to run the old RUU, putting your back on 2.2 and continue rooting. If your bootloader version is higher (98xxx or something) you'll have to run the newest RUU in order for it to work.
I may be completely wrong here but when all else fails... RUU!

Sounds like something got screwed up during the RUU process of downgrading. I've run into a similar issue when running the ROM Update Utility and it put me back to s-on but It kept my custom recovery. Same thing, no matter what I flashed I couldn't get it to boot. Yes, you know when I water damaged my phone I (stupidly) was trying to RUU it while trying to fix it and the RUU failed and I got to a point where RUU was telling me that a newer version is installed.
Well the way I fixed it was by running RUU 2.3.4. All worked good after that.
Please refer to my post about how to flash misc.img in recovery since you can't get past the htc screen and this will allow you to get downgraded. If I can the post it's around here somewhere and I'll post a link to it.
