[Q] Friend of mine gave me his Evo Shift to fix and I'm stuck! Please Help! - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A friend of mine asked if I could help him fix his phone. He is a noob and so am I but I have rooted several phones and flashed many ROMS on all sorts of phones with no issues. So I would a least say I am pretty tech savvy. Here is the dilemma- If I hold volume down and power I get a white screen with some options such as hboot, fastboot, recovery, factory reset, simlock & image crc. It also says S-On....which I believe is the problem. He says that he though he downgraded to 2.2 before rooting but couldn't be sure but says he was originally on 2.3.4. I can boot into recovery CWM, mount usb/SD and load roms but no matter what ROM I load it will never get passed the HTC screen. Can someone tell me or at least point me in the right direction as to how I can achieve S-Off? Also I must note that he made no backups prior to his rooting attempt (Ughhhh!). Is there an easy way to get S-Off when the phone seems to be unlocked, rooted & CMW installed? Thanks a bunch my fellow XDA Einsteins.

I didn't think you can have a recovery without s-off for the shift... You could run an RUU and use one of the root guides we have if someone with more experience can't cone up with an idea. Of he did downgrade to 2.2 he should of used the shiftrr.exe to root

No worries, no need. Not offended.

Sounds like something got screwed up during the RUU process of downgrading. I've run into a similar issue when running the ROM Update Utility and it put me back to s-on but It kept my custom recovery. Same thing, no matter what I flashed I couldn't get it to boot. Your best bet is probably going to be run the the RUU. It will depend on which version of bootloader is on the device to which RUU will work. I can't remember the specific number but I believe the 2.2 bootloader is something like 93xxx something or another. If that's the case then you should be able to run the old RUU, putting your back on 2.2 and continue rooting. If your bootloader version is higher (98xxx or something) you'll have to run the newest RUU in order for it to work.
I may be completely wrong here but when all else fails... RUU!

Yes, you know when I water damaged my phone I (stupidly) was trying to RUU it while trying to fix it and the RUU failed and I got to a point where RUU was telling me that a newer version is installed.
Well the way I fixed it was by running RUU 2.3.4. All worked good after that.

You need to elaborate a little more if you want some assistance.
Do you have s-Off?
What is your baseband number? That will indicate what radio you have and will give others an idea of where in the process you are.
Assuming you made it far enough in the process to get s-Off, you can just flash the ota stock ROM by attn1, which will have the OTA radio in it, if it turns out you are on the downgraded ROM/radio.
If you have anything other than the stock kernel/ROM on your phone, then the rooting was at least partially successful. You probably just need to get clockworkmod recovery installed correctly so you can install custom roms.

Yup, that looks like the downgraded radio the hack kit leaves you with.
S-Off basically means you can flash stuff. "Security off"
So as Gene said, you're partially through the process. You just need to get a good ROM/radio on.

Now that you are basically rooted there is not necessarily an easy way to get back to plain stock.
It can take a while for the average user I believe using the s on tool... but considering I do not have all of the info I will let someone else answer your question in full.

Go back to h boot, if it says "Ship s-off on the very top of the screen you should be all set. Make sure clockworkmod is installed. if not download rom manager from market and flash cwm through rom manager. Next go to the development form and find attn1's stock OTA update with radio. Download the file to your computer, place it on the root of your sd card. Make sure the file is named PD98IMG.zip, turn off phone and boot into h boot, when it says apply update? Press vol up and watch the magic happen. Also make sure there is no other files named PD98IMG.zip on your sd card as this will cause trouble. You will still be rooted with s-off but that's ok, I mean your were already trying to root, just cause you lost sound doesn't mean you should be afraid of rooting. Once you fix your problem and get a good handle on things, you'll be in love!

[Q] Stock/Signed T-Mo roms to downgrade - Obtaining S-Off

Hello all, just got the MT4GS I have latest boot loader and update previous owner did it right before I purchased.
I thought we should get together and see what works and what doesn't.
I have tried the temp root method and SuperOneClick and the official HTC unlocker to no avail.
I know on some phones its possible to downgrade using some sort of official package or signed update. Is there such thing for our phone?
Threads I used for reference:
[APP]SuperOneClick v2.3.2 - Better LG Phone Support!
permroot for S-off MyTouch 4G Slide
Anyone notice the MT4GS Bootloader Unlockable?
Poking at latest OTA update for fun and profit

There has to be a way to get this done. I found a signed and stock firmware and instructions

To undo the update/restore the stock firmware that came with the phone:
(Note: this will only work if you are still S-OFF even tho you have the new HBOOT version. If you are S-ON with the new HBOOT, then at this time there is no known way to revert... hopefully we can get the devs. of Revolutionary, etc, to update the root methods. Also, if you want to update just to check it out, make sure to turn S-OFF first if you'd like to give yourself the option to revert later.)
1. Download the stock firmware package from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1178082
2. Rename it PG59IMG.zip and put it on the root of your sdcard.
3. Boot into the bootloader('adb reboot bootloader' or power down the phone then hold volume down + power), let it read the update package, and press 'volume up' to update when prompted.
4. At the end it will prompt you to press Power to reboot. It scared me because when i pressed Power, the screen went off and seemed to not come back on, so i pressed power once again, and it booted into the system.
That's it! Just remember that if you do this, it will of course erase all your data... your phone will be like it was out of the box.

It won't work because the version is too old obviously. These are specially crafted archives with data in the beginning of the archive. You can't modify the android-info.txt because it throws off both winrar and 7zip.
I tried changing the version number in a hex editor. This makes the crc fail. Is there a way to just alter the crc to the new CRC? This way when HBOOT checks for the checksum it will pass and downgrade. I know for Unreal Tournament based games hackers would use a method called bytehacking where they are able to change certain values without upsetting CRC checks. Would something like this be possible?
I found a tool that recovers it and fixes it I have to try flashing in HBOOT but I doubt it will work I'm afraid the important data in the beginning. Maybe if I sign it, it will work?
The latest idea I had was using the OTA update, it contains a firmware.zip what if we modify the contents of firmware.zip with the contents of the stock firmware? You can flash using fastboot (i hope) as it will be formatted as an update and will downgrade the hboot as well.
are you S-ON? i mentioned in that post that it will only work if you happened to have S-OFF from before, which i did. but so far no one has been able to do anything with S-ON and the newest update. have you tried Tacoroot?
The search button is your friend ._., there are 5+ threads that share information and methods none of which work but the people on said threads are putting information and ideas out there.
Sorry noob question, just got the Mt4gs and It's updated to newest, how do I check if I am s-off or s-on? Also in short what does s-off/on mean? Thanks in advance.
Doubleshot on XDA App
Power the phone off with fastboot turned off. Or pull the battery when you power on hold the lower volume key and power simultaneously to boot into hboot. It will tell you S-OFF /S-ON. If you have latest OTA you're most likely S-ON.
S-Off: This term is used when describing the security radio. With S-on only signed ROMs may be flashed, when S-off unsigned ROMs may be flashed IE custom ROMs.

What happens if I let T-Mobile push ICS to my rooted phone?

I've asked this question as part of another question in another thread, but never got an answer...
I have a T-Mobile Sensation 4G that's rooted and has an unlocked bootloader.
There is no custom ROM on it right now, it's still the original Android 2.3.4 with Sense 3.0.
When T-Mobile pushes out the ICS update. What happens to my phone if I allow it to load?
Will my phone still be rooted? Will the bootloader still be unlocked?
Or will my phone revert to a locked and unrooted state?
Or is there potential for damage?
I'd like the official ICS update because it will include a working T-Mobile Wifi calling app for ICS. But I would like to keep my phone rooted.
Thanks in advance for any answers and advice on this!

If you are S-off or HTC Dev unlocked then no you will not go back S-on or be relocked.
You will lose root, but go to here for a guide on how to root the nee ICS ROM.
Now as far as if you being rooted there is some that say need to un root before updating. And there is some that say it does not matter. I am still trying to learn more about this myself, so to be safe I suggest you un root before you update.

Its a complete load of BS that your phone won't get updates if its rooted. All you need is stock rom and stock recovery. To preserve your root use voodoo ota root keeper. Backup root before update, then as long as your s off, flash stock recovery in boot loader, reboot, get the update, flash an unlocked 3.32 firmware from development section firmware thread then flash a custom recovery in bootloader then restore root using the app and flash root tools from mikes stock rom thread in clockwork mod or 4ext which contains su binaries, busy box etc. Which should give you root back.

Well I can promise you that my phone updated to ics from stock gb with root and I managed to restore it after the update. Its recovery that will stop it installing. This page holds tons of instructions on ota updates but halfway down it says that ONLY correct CID, Recovery and stock rom are needed.

Well its hardly bloat, its a recovery, and its the only recovery that can apply official updates. And thats the only reason it would ever be used over clockworkmod or 4ext unless you wanted to stay 100% stock. But all custom recoveries stop an official update being installed that's why you need stock recovery if you wanna receive official updates.

last time i had an update was that htc watch app or whatever and i had to get my phone back to stock before i could update, im not that much of an advance user to know ways to keep root and all that during updates.
Just so I am clear as I am thinknig of just waiting for the official t-mobile update (using t-mobile brand phone but no on their network) now given my phone died recently after flashing ARHD and I am not sure if it's just hardware coincidence or something with the firmware or ROM.
So after I got my phone back from repair...I now have S-off, rooted, clockwork mod, and SuperCID. So if I want to just get the OTA update for ICS when it comes out...what do I need to do? Do you guys mean removing clockwork recovery? How do I put the old recovery back? And also, someone told me I need to change the CID back to the Tmobile one?
Hope to get some clarification here. thanks

I read the instructions but am a little confused about one part. They talk about if I want to stay rooted after ICS update... I need to root the GB ROM first (done)...the flash recovery...change CID back to T-mobile...
Then run OTA update....then it talks about flashing custom recovery. But I thought it said the new HBOOT is locked so custom recovery is not possible. So how could one flash custom recovery after ICS update as suggested.
Also, regarding flashing stock recovery....on one of the links, there's a stock_PMG58IMG file....so it doesn't matter if mine is US-T mobile? I can just flash any stock recovery as there's only one?

Then search for the "mytouch 4G Slide". There will be the stock rom that can be applied in the bootloader. Just charge phone to 100%. Then put the downloaded zip from HTC Dev on the (Root of a CLEAN) SD card, and enter the boot loader (Vol+/Power). Then it'll find the zip, and ask you stuff. Blah, Blah, Blah. Your 100% Factory.

Also, HTC/Asurion doesn't care if your S-On (U). Or S-Off, there's so many threads about this. Xo

>.>, ok yet another noob questions, do i take the CRC or the MR file ? and what would be the difference between the two ?
I'm currently on my 5th phone for the year that I've sent back to T-mo for one reason or another....all were returned with s-off, rooted, custom boot animation, and Undeads, CM7 or MIUI roms without any issue.
This doesn't even account for a quarter of the phone's I've sent back to T-Mobile in the past 2 years for one reason or another....ALL returned s-off, rooted with one custom rom or another.... ZERO issues...

*bump*
The difference between these 2 files (CRC & MR) is? Which is the appropriate one to d/l in this situation?
EDIT: Well that's pretty damn typical. ScriptKitty...try to go download either. It'll redirect you back to the HTC home page for both. Wow. Go HTC! /sarcasm
If anyone else knows where to d/l this I'd much appreciate it. I'm in the same situation as ScriptKitty and cannot find this d/l anywhere.
Can not flash rom other than Pyroice
Hello. I have been searching for some help for a few weeks now. I am HBOOT-1.45.0013 S-on unlocked. I tried to flash other roms from bulletproof to Cyanogenmod per intsructions that I found using pyroice. I like the rom but I do not have wifi so I do not use this phone that much now. Just short of going stock, can anybody tell me why it wont load any other rom? I get status 7 load aborted????? Do not have my stock recovery just got Pyroice...

Wesomatic, you may have MUCH more luck getting some help if you posted this in the Q&A section. Quite a few more developers & senior members cruise those threads than this one.
**Maybe a stupid question, but you ARE trying to flash from Clockwork Mod Recovery (or one of the other available recoveries) aren't you?
I have clockwork recovery....

I got kind of excited when I saw this, but all I've ever found at htcdev for the MT4GS is a couple of ZIPs of kernel sources. (To others, that's what those CRC and MR files are. I don't know the difference, but they are just sources and some docs.)
So, is the helpful advice from AgentCherryColla just a mistake, or have other files been there in the past? Or maybe some other location?
(Unofficial copies of signed stock ROMs are available with pointers in various threads here.)

[Q] a couple of rooting/unlocking questions

Hey everyone,
I'm kind of a noob when it comes to development for the HOX and HTC in general; I previously had a Galaxy S II and it was incredibly easy to root and flash custom roms. I just had a couple of questions regarding rooting for the HOX:
1. I'm currently on 1.85, and I know that means I can still root. However, the 2.20 update hasn't even popped up on my phone. Also, whenever I check for updates, it just returns to the previous screen, like there's no update available. Does this mean I can still root using the 1.85 one click exploit?
2. How "safe" is rooting/unlocking the bootloader on the HOX? I know unlocking the bootloader is not officially supported on the AT&T version, and that you have to get SuperCID in order to unlock it. With all this modification, is it pretty safe to root and unlock the HOX? I really don't have the money to spend on another phone if I somehow brick it lol.
Thanks!

The root exploit should still work and whenever you mess with the phone in this state their is always a chance of bricking even if it might be just a soft brick

Good to know, thanks! I thought it might still work but wasn't sure. I see... What would be an example of a soft brick? I've read that if a problem occurs, you can run an RUU to restore it to factory default. Also, I don't have much experience with ADB either lol. I've read Gunnyman's primer though.

Thought so, thanks h8rift! I saw your thread about the CM10 nightlies on the HOX, and was wondering if you can flash CM10 nightlies from TWRP, or only ClockworkMod? Because CWM isn't officially supported on the HOX right?

Thanks DvineLord! I'll download it and keep it in a safe place. To run an RUU, don't you just double click it with your phone connected and it'll do everything for you?

Haha thanks omario! I just wasn't sure if you could flash CM10 through TWRP, but glad to hear it's possible. I've already downloaded all the necessary files; might take the plunge tonight! I downloaded the 1.85 One-Click Root tool from DesignGears as well as the one click SuperCID/Bootloader Unlock from kennethpen. Are these the correct tools I should be using?

Yeah, I'm looking up some YouTube videos on the whole process right now. Yup, I've heard horror stories of users who've flashed International HOX roms and bricked their phones! I'll be sure to stay in this section; I check it like everyday anyways lol. Thanks for your help!
