Ditch gs4 for n5? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it worth it for people who have made the switch? I'm happy with my gs4 but I don't know if I should switch to n5.

I did. A Nexus phone is something special.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

I did and it's definitely worth it. the kit Kat and snapdragon 800 is awesome you will definitely feel the difference in speed. the battery is the same as the s4 if not maybe a tad bit better. Btw I had the Sprint s4

I can heartily recommend the switch.

I don't regret switching from the S4 to the N5 for a second. This phone is superior in almost every way, especially now that 4.4.1 is out with the camera improvements.

I did. Glad I made the switch. Performance is so much more snappier. The colors were more vibrant on the GS4, but now that I'm not staring at the 2 screens side by side anymore, I don't notice it.
Only thing I miss on the GS4 is the louder loudspeaker and the faster camera shutter, but hopefully 4.4.1 fixes that.

Shouldn't the colors be better on the n5 since it has an IPS display?

I wish I kept my s4

It's all about personal preference. The screen on the N5 is incredibly accurate and gorgeous (just take a look at the better reviews on the web) . But if you favor amoled then you won't see or recognize this.

If you're happy with the S4, then I say stay with it. Don't get me wrong, I like my N5. I switched from an S3 because TouchWiz was really annoying me with its' sluggishness. I flashed CM10 and got rid of it but even the stable build had some bugs. Which is why I decided I should just go with a Nexus. So, again if you like your S4 and have no problems then I don't really see a huge point in upgrading. Both are great phones though (if you don't mind the sluggish TouchWiz)

I still have both my Sprint gs4 and the Nexus 5 and I must say I like my gs4 better. The N5 is my first Nexus device and it's nice. I wanted to try it b/c of the countless articles, blogs, and forum posts extolling the virtues of a "pure" Android experience.
Although I've owned my gs4 since day 1 back in april, I still find myself using my gs4 as my primary, "go to" smartphone device.
With that said, I'll probably sell the GS4 for the GS5, however, once it comes out.

There's plenty of people willing to trade for the N5. If it's that bad for you I'm sure you could get back to an S4. You could try craigslist or swappa.
I personally don't have any signal (or any) problems with my N5.

I've got the S3, GNex, and HOX and I'm also thinking about selling the HOX. Between the three, I find myself using the S3 and GNex the most. I love the HOX, but if I sell it now I can put the money aside towards the next Nexus phone when it's introduced. Decisions, decisions.

And more people would rather have inferior hardware. Phone is already beastly as it is. Don't know how much more you could possibly want out of a phone performance wise.
An unlocked bootloader and root? Impossible right now on the new firmware. The HOX is a beastly device and Joe public has a lot to be happy about. However its not an ENTHUSIASTS device. AT&T made sure of that.

[Q] Phone to replace my NS i9023

Hi,
I believe the title says it all. I was pretty sure my next phone will be Google Experience. I really love the community and opportunities with this. I had Sony Xperia for about a month and it was terrible with support. But Nexus 4, apart from being much more expensive when bought from a shop and not from Google (which doesnt sell to Czech Republic), has one thing that I really hate - a battery that cant be easily replaced. Im used to carrying one spare (or more when on a longer trip) on me and I can easily switch them even when staning on a crowded bus. I couldnt do that with N4.
So, do you find this to be such a serious issue I consider it to be? And what other phones would you recommend, please?
Galaxy Nexus. Or hacked Galaxy S3 as a second choice. Maybe an HTC One X with CM10 could be a really sexy phone too.

Galaxy Nexus would be the best, no doubts. Don't go for N4, it doesn't seems to go good so far. A few bugs have already been discovered.

The Nexus Series has its own reputation and of them all, its Development support. While the Nexus 4 is claimed to be bugged with buzzing sound and no Out-of-the-box OTG, it couldn't be considered better than the Galaxy Nexus. The same being the reason for me to buy Galaxy Nexus too, in a month or two.
I too find Note series a bit big for a smartphone to carry in our pockets. No offense to anyone's opinions

Galaxy Nexus is €295, Nexus 4 is €458, its more than €150 difference. And the inability to change battery with N4 is bad too. Looks to me that I will go for Galaxy Nexus.

Is anyone waiting to get the Nexus 5 because of potential defects?

I definitely want to get a Nexus 5 (battery and camera issues aside), but all the reported defects with either the speakers, scratches on the screen, loose buttons, etc are giving me pause. I'm thinking about waiting a month or so until the inventory at the stores gets another batch from LG.
Is anyone else waiting to get the phone until new inventory is replaces with new batches/revisions of the inventory?
How long do you think I should wait before the next batches come out? How long are you waiting?
Just get it. I've had zero issues with the phone.

Echo most of the statements here about good quality device. Still can't believe the value for the price. I've used mostly Sony devices for the past seven years. They launch at one and a half the cost and update the software at least six months after it's released.

Mine works perfectly. But sadly I'm returning it. At&t (straight talk) had better signal yet there is no LTE. I'll be sticking with Verizon. Signal is not as strong but I get LTE in 90% of places.

This phone is flawless. I think most of the "problems" are just people exaggerating or people whose desires are insatiable
That defect thread is poison...
Don't worry about it. That's just a handful of people with issues, it doesn't mean every N5 is defective. If you want one now, get one now. If it has some horrible issue, exchange it for another one. Simple as that.
I don't want to ruin your party but I have 7 dead pixels on my screen and believe me I'm not exaggerating I guess it just comes down to each person experience with their units, I would recommend based on mine to wait.

There were 4 or so revisions of the Nexus 4. It's never wrong to let manufacturers work out the kinks on the first sacrificial lambs.
I'm not really worried about the "defects", I'm waiting more for the dev scene to get cookin... I know I'm gonna wanna flash something as soon as I get the phone. I'm also on Sprint and things seem to be pretty hit or miss with them right now, so I'm giving them time to get it sorted (hopefully).
Just don't wait too long, or you might find yourself trying to decide between the n5 and galaxy s5...

This could be tracked with the serial numbers of the devices I guess, considering posting a thread about this in a couple of days.

So because you didn't have any issues that means the thousands of other phones out there never had any? Yes that's intelligent logic.

Many in these forums go out of their way to look for issues (rattling buttons - give me a break - they float in the casing over the actual electrical contacts).
Lots of products get revved throughout their life cycle. It doesn't mean all previous revs were defective.
You can wait if you want to. Hell, I'll probably wait for the nexus 6 as I just don't see this one as that much of an upgrade, and a newer, better one is less than a year away.
I got my N5 day after release day and it is flawless, not a single problem.

Is dumb as the statement may sound, those who feel like waiting should, those who don't, shouldn't.
I'll explain why.
Those who can quickly get pissed of that their phone doesn't have "nipples" (N4 reversion), or the smallest most insignificant change, should wait.
For most people, that never an issue, and they should buy soon, but for me, I was childishly willing to pay $30, to trade with a newer reversion... Luckily I didn't get the opportunity to

Sound died?

After an airplane flight and listening to music on my Nexus, I realised that it stopped working as a whole (with headphones in and speakers). Opening Apollo results in a crash after selecting a song and sometimes static noise can be heard when usual background music plays. (E.g starting Need for Speed) I've read a couple of other threads saying that getting an RMA from Google is the best option but I'm currently overseas so it'll have to wait. Is a factory reset the second best option? Has anyone else experienced anything similar? It's as if the speakers just blew ceased to work.
Thanks!
Factory reset is the FIRST best option. RMA is always the LAST resort.
Take backups. This is the order:
1) factory reset
2) Reflash ROM
3) Return to full stock
4) RMA

In my case I don't think I did. Mind you it was a "brand new" Nexus 5 32gb worth $400 also $150 cash which brings the value to $550. A used Note 3 is worth around that price.
Also before I obtained the Note 3 I basically "ripped off" the previous owner by trading my Nexus 4 16gb plus $60 cash (he originally wanted $100). All in all I made $90 profit plus my dream phone (bnib Nexus 5). I think I made out like a bandit and I'm happy with it.

I definitely miss the over saturated HD Amoled screen over the IPS found on the N5 (although the N5's IPS screen is surprisingly gorgeous as well). I also miss/don't miss the screen size. It was just too big for one handed operations which I definitely love. The N5's speaker sounds a bit louder but a bit distorted compared to the N3 (Note 3). Camera quality seems to be about the same despite the 13mp shooter found on the N3.
If I were to compare them to a vehicle I'd say that the N5 is similar to a Ferrari and the Note 3 is similar to a Range Rover. The N5 is a very speedy, performance device whilst lacking the beautiful features that that the N3 has to offer which some might say is a gimmick.
I must admit I only used the IR blaster (TV remote feature) once and that was to show off, air gestures and S pen all fall in the same category as a gimmick but it was fun to show off.
The N5 is somewhat bland but I love it. No lag so far (but I've only owned it for one day so that might change with use). The N3 did have a bit of lag but nothing to cry over.
CONCLUSION: Both are great phones. To me its a matter of larger screen vs smaller screen, bland but super speedy software vs a heavy, slightly slower one packed with features. OUT OF THE BOX I didn't really need to download any 3rd party apps for the N3. The N5 was a slightly different story.

I guess you read what I said wrong. I traded my "used" Note 3 for a "brand new" Nexus 5 32gb (which is worth $400 from Google) and the guy I traded gave me $150 cash.
All in all it was a pretty even trade if you add up the $400 Nexus 5 + $150 cash (that he gave me) = $550. My used Note 3 was worth around $500 to $550.

Screen responsiveness on the Note 5

Have anybody notice how responsive is the screen on this thing? Sometimes I barely touch the screen, and it detects it. I'm very happy with the phone. Coming from the Note 4, and loving it so far. Even the battery life, that had me worried for a while. But now, loving it!
Yeah i noticed the same thing as you. You can pretty much hover your finger over and icon and it will open the app. Pretty damn sensitive.

I was thinking the same thing. I loved the G4, but the screen was just too unresponsive. I also never realized how much more I enjoyed a button on the front and sides. Much more useful for motorcyclists who dock their phone on the handlebar.

Wow, in surprised how much unanimous hated there is toward the G4. I have never used the G4, but assumed it was a great phone. I loved my Note 4, but started to not love it so much when Lollipop hit. I really love my Note 5 and the screen is amazing resolution and responsiveness.

I'll be able to JUMP again on September 28th. I'll probably change to jump on demand at that time.

It's mostly the unresponsiveness of the screen that makes me not like it. It's irritating.

Glad I wasn't the only one. Thought I had a defective digitizer.
Yep also upgraded from a G4 which has horrible screen responsiveness. Only thing that bothers me on the Note 5 is when I pick a song in Spotify as I put my phone down it chooses another song. DOH!
