Sound died? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After an airplane flight and listening to music on my Nexus, I realised that it stopped working as a whole (with headphones in and speakers). Opening Apollo results in a crash after selecting a song and sometimes static noise can be heard when usual background music plays. (E.g starting Need for Speed) I've read a couple of other threads saying that getting an RMA from Google is the best option but I'm currently overseas so it'll have to wait. Is a factory reset the second best option? Has anyone else experienced anything similar? It's as if the speakers just blew ceased to work.
Thanks!

Factory reset is the FIRST best option. RMA is always the LAST resort.
Take backups. This is the order:
1) factory reset
2) Reflash ROM
3) Return to full stock
4) RMA

You wouldn't happen to know why my computer spits out an error every time I try to flash the radio file under step 3 would you? It simply says error: cannot open 'radio-hammerheard-m8974a-1.0.25.0.23.img' . Flashing the first hammerhead .img worked fine.

Are you flashing it manually? Perhaps it's a typo. Check the file exists.

Oh it was, sorry. Sigh it's still not working. Every time I hit the soft keys the speakers make a fuzzy/static sound. I guess RMA is the only thing left to do.

Just realised that an RMA is for devices received within 15 days of shipping right? That means I'm not eligible for one..

I traded my Note 3 plus $150 cash for my brand new Nexus 5 32gb. Does the warranty transfer over to me? Once I went through the gmail setup I received an email from Google thanking me for my purchase of a Nexus 5.
I'm assuming that google thinks I'm the original owner that purchased the Nexus 5.

In my case I don't think I did. Mind you it was a "brand new" Nexus 5 32gb worth $400 also $150 cash which brings the value to $550. A used Note 3 is worth around that price.
Also before I obtained the Note 3 I basically "ripped off" the previous owner by trading my Nexus 4 16gb plus $60 cash (he originally wanted $100). All in all I made $90 profit plus my dream phone (bnib Nexus 5). I think I made out like a bandit and I'm happy with it.

I definitely miss the over saturated HD Amoled screen over the IPS found on the N5 (although the N5's IPS screen is surprisingly gorgeous as well). I also miss/don't miss the screen size. It was just too big for one handed operations which I definitely love. The N5's speaker sounds a bit louder but a bit distorted compared to the N3 (Note 3). Camera quality seems to be about the same despite the 13mp shooter found on the N3.
If I were to compare them to a vehicle I'd say that the N5 is similar to a Ferrari and the Note 3 is similar to a Range Rover. The N5 is a very speedy, performance device whilst lacking the beautiful features that that the N3 has to offer which some might say is a gimmick.
I must admit I only used the IR blaster (TV remote feature) once and that was to show off, air gestures and S pen all fall in the same category as a gimmick but it was fun to show off.
The N5 is somewhat bland but I love it. No lag so far (but I've only owned it for one day so that might change with use). The N3 did have a bit of lag but nothing to cry over.
CONCLUSION: Both are great phones. To me its a matter of larger screen vs smaller screen, bland but super speedy software vs a heavy, slightly slower one packed with features. OUT OF THE BOX I didn't really need to download any 3rd party apps for the N3. The N5 was a slightly different story.

I guess you read what I said wrong. I traded my "used" Note 3 for a "brand new" Nexus 5 32gb (which is worth $400 from Google) and the guy I traded gave me $150 cash.
All in all it was a pretty even trade if you add up the $400 Nexus 5 + $150 cash (that he gave me) = $550. My used Note 3 was worth around $500 to $550.

I recommend you to just wait till the phone is in stores available, so you can go there and feel the phone in your hands. For you, your opinion is the most important (compared to others).
Because it's a Nexus phone, all the updates will be served by Google, instead of LG. That's the reason of most people who buy a Nexus phone: the update support.

Is anyone waiting to get the Nexus 5 because of potential defects?

I definitely want to get a Nexus 5 (battery and camera issues aside), but all the reported defects with either the speakers, scratches on the screen, loose buttons, etc are giving me pause. I'm thinking about waiting a month or so until the inventory at the stores gets another batch from LG.
Is anyone else waiting to get the phone until new inventory is replaces with new batches/revisions of the inventory?
How long do you think I should wait before the next batches come out? How long are you waiting?
Just get it. I've had zero issues with the phone.

Echo most of the statements here about good quality device. Still can't believe the value for the price. I've used mostly Sony devices for the past seven years. They launch at one and a half the cost and update the software at least six months after it's released.

This phone is flawless. I think most of the "problems" are just people exaggerating or people whose desires are insatiable
That defect thread is poison...
Don't worry about it. That's just a handful of people with issues, it doesn't mean every N5 is defective. If you want one now, get one now. If it has some horrible issue, exchange it for another one. Simple as that.
I don't want to ruin your party but I have 7 dead pixels on my screen and believe me I'm not exaggerating I guess it just comes down to each person experience with their units, I would recommend based on mine to wait.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
There were 4 or so revisions of the Nexus 4. It's never wrong to let manufacturers work out the kinks on the first sacrificial lambs.
I'm not really worried about the "defects", I'm waiting more for the dev scene to get cookin... I know I'm gonna wanna flash something as soon as I get the phone. I'm also on Sprint and things seem to be pretty hit or miss with them right now, so I'm giving them time to get it sorted (hopefully).
Just don't wait too long, or you might find yourself trying to decide between the n5 and galaxy s5...

Same here, but how much should we wait is the question? A month or two or even more?
This could be tracked with the serial numbers of the devices I guess, considering posting a thread about this in a couple of days.
Hopefully they update the inventory in Germany soon.

Many in these forums go out of their way to look for issues (rattling buttons - give me a break - they float in the casing over the actual electrical contacts).
Lots of products get revved throughout their life cycle. It doesn't mean all previous revs were defective.
You can wait if you want to. Hell, I'll probably wait for the nexus 6 as I just don't see this one as that much of an upgrade, and a newer, better one is less than a year away.
I got my N5 day after release day and it is flawless, not a single problem.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Is dumb as the statement may sound, those who feel like waiting should, those who don't, shouldn't.
I'll explain why.
Those who can quickly get pissed of that their phone doesn't have "nipples" (N4 reversion), or the smallest most insignificant change, should wait.
For most people, that never an issue, and they should buy soon, but for me, I was childishly willing to pay $30, to trade with a newer reversion... Luckily I didn't get the opportunity to

Should i order the nexus 5 ?

With all those defect threads around,i'm a little bit scared to be honest ....My friend will be ordering it for me because the play store doesn't take Paypal. If there's a defect, how does it work ? Do they charge you the second device until you send back the first one ?
Yes they charge you for the replacement then after 5-10 days or so u well get the money back. Even before they get the original device back u will get your money back.

First one I ordered was a 16gb, it had a dead pixel and light bleed on top left corner. The 2nd one, a 32gb, had perfect screen, but has the weak noisy vibration motor issue. Gonna call later to do an RMA for another exchange. If the 3rd one also has problems, then I'm done. They cut too many corners to keep this phone inexpensive, it really is like a lottery trying to get a perfect one. And that's too bad because I really like this phone.
Side note: My Note 3 was perfect out of the box. Also got a Moto X and is perfect as well. It's pretty sad I've gone through 2 Nexus 5's already. :/

Third replacement from Verizon incoming

My phone had really bad screen burn in, asked for a replacement under warranty.
The replacement apparently had a motherboard defect, eventually not recognizing the battery and all sorts of other crazy behavior.
The second replacement has a dent in the glass (not crack), and under that dent are some black ghost images that look like crack lines. As if someone cracked their screen and Verizon never replaced the digitizer/Amoled panel, just the glass.
I'm worried this will get worse, and then Verizon will claim I did it and that it voided the warranty. So I'll send this one back too.
Let's see how many replacements I can go through before one works how I want it to. :good:
I got into the habit of taking my sealed refurbished phones with me to my bored Verizon corporate store and opening them with the manager. We both got some laughs at the utter crap they send out. I never wanted blamed for their mess.

You can of course ask to recive a new and not a refurbished one. I had an issue with the charge port not accepting the cords so I called they sent a refurbished with the same issue so I called again and asked for a new phone not a refurbished as I already had issues, and they sent me a brand new one. It never hurts to ask.

I agree, at this point I would pretty much demand a new phone after you've already received 2 bad refurbs.
I got some horrible replacements sent to me when I had a Galaxy Nexus...I think 5 altogether (I then demanded to be sent an s3, and they actually agreed). I even had a replacement s3 sent to me that lasted for all of two hours before the backlight died. I never got a new phone sent to even though I asked multiple times... But you never know until you ask.

I wish I would have done this! I received the third replacement today, and it's "STA" date on the back is 1/11/2014.
Unfortunately it has 4.3 already installed on it. So only possibly root for me.
I thought it would be new because of that date, but I did a screen test, and it still isn't a new phone, there are dark artifacts. Testing everything out right now to make sure its ok.
after the third swap theyll give you a diffrent phone if you ask
So do you think that any replacement phone that is sent out from now on will already have 4.3 stock on it? Yikes!

Yea, same with screen burn-in right (eventually)? I was surprised Verizon replaced that initially and didn't say "it's normal wear".
Makes you wonder if the S5 will have a different screen

Oh you're lucky. I got mine on launch day, early July 2012. By December 2013, it had the keyboard burned in (I could see the keys), the notification bar, and the Whatsapp header bar burned in. And that all was visible during any kind of screen.
Maybe it was the first run of devices that had it.
I got mine in early Feb 2013

Oh my god this reminds me of when I went through literally 7 krazrs and they gave me an ultimatum...to pay like, 70 or 100 to keep the same phone or go to a lesser flip phone...i left and went to another verizon and they let me upgrade to a legitimate phone...

Got mine same time as you and my screen is still fine, guess I don't have a single app open long enough to leave an imprint.

Switching over from a Nexus 4

Hi guys.. I am very close to purchasing a OnePlus One 64 GB version for $375. (Craigslist)
I am coming from a Google nexus 4. While on paper the One looks much better, I am not sure in real world because I've never held one.
Those that switched from nexus 4, what are your thoughts? Are you satisfied, any regrets?

Thank you for the reassurance.
I've read that it has a lot of bugs and force closes, but some say cyanogen put out an update and it fixes all of it. Is that true?

I don't know about other peoples experiences , but I have had some force closes but not different from my nexus 4, mainly unoptimized apps
Nearly all bugs have been fixed, but the multi touch is still iffy, it is 100% software ... Not hardware related because with a reboot it back to normal
( zooming in to photos will cause the photo to violently zoom and unzoom , flicking it self to another photo)
This is on latest stock, I hope lollipop fixes this even tho it happened only twice for me

Is there a negative to purchasing the phone off craigslist?
It's not directly registered to the owner right? I can just pop in my sim card and I'm good to go

The only issue is they may not honor the warranty if something does go wrong with the hardware in the future since you are not the original purchaser, although I don't know what their policy is, it is worth looking into.
Coming from a Nexus 4, this phone is a huge upgrade. I actually came from a Nexus 5 and I love this phone so much, it is nicer in every way, so I think you will love this device.
I would just get an invite and purchase thru the company though, will come to $364 or so shipped, which means cheaper and brand new.
At this point in the game, there is no reason for you to pay MORE than retail.

I have zero of any of these issues and have had the phone for a few months. Yellow banding is overblown and I don't think any of the new build models have them (mine never did). Ghost touches and signal issues? I've not had those one time.
EVERY phone will have some complaints, even... wait for it... the iPhone!
I bought the phone, and sent 2 invites to friends who bought the phone, and no complaints at all. I don't run stock though either, currently I use Carbon ROM nightlies and could not be happier.
Thank you for the information.
What build number should I look in the settings that tells me it's a newer build and not older.

No idea tbh, but just curious why you want to pay over retail for CL instead of getting it from OnePlus?
Looks like someone just posted up some invites here

Just keep an eye on that thread, you'll pay less for a brand new product.

Those 2 have been claimed.
Because of the wait... This invite crap to me is ridiculous.
Who knows how long it will be for an invite. Then wait for shipping.
Might take like a month.

That's a good point, but you can get an invite thru G+ etc, if you really want one.
No matter which way you go, the phone is solid and I think you'll be happy with the purchase.
Finally got an invite... expires soon.
But it will not let me buy the phone http://i58.tinypic.com/2a5ewhy.png
I can't read that.

Using Mozilla firefox was giving me a lot of troubles, fixed it by switching to IE.
WHen I went to process my payment via PayPal it said it was sending it to ''DA SHENG INTERNATIONAL TRADE CO'' (weird).
Did your say this as well?
I think so. It is a Chinese company after all...

A big shout out @askpcguy for the kind invite.
I placed my 64 GB order. I can't wait to get my new phone.
I hope it's issue free

Don't worry , every single phone you buy could have a fault , no phone is perfect
People bash the phone n company of faults just because they are a small company
