[Q] Question about Tmobile insurance for a Google phone - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

got my Nexus 5 yesterday from Google, went to Tmobile and got my SIM, updated my plan to the current 2.5gb plan which includes tethering. They asked if I wanted to insure it against theft/accidental damage for $8 a month. Knowing how fragile it is I said yes.
And today I was getting out of my car, didn't realize I still had it plugged in to charge, the cord was wrapped around my e-brake, and the phone popped out of my hand and dropped 2 feet onto concrete. Smashed screen. (Still works though). Huge huge bummer
I know the deductible is $175, but with shipping where I live that would be about the same as sending back to LG for repair. However, I see some older posts of people who bought their phones elsewhere than Tmobile, who bought the Tmobile insurance, then when they tried to use it were told they can't since it wasn't bought at Tmobile. Apparently the Tmobile sales people will happily sell you the policy not knowing the details.
However, these were posts from 2011. I was wondering if anyone has used Tmobile's $8 a month damage/theft insurance on a non-Tmobile phone, what was your experience??

i kno with sprint they wont let you use there insurance if u get the phone from the google play store... i always have had sprints insurance on all my phones.. its 11$ a month.. well when i got the N5 i tried to get it insured and they wont let me seeing i got my N5 from the play store... so i will have to find a 3 party insurance.. like... protect your bubble.. squartrade.. ect..

We were very clear with them that the phone was purchased through Google, they said that's not a problem.

MT4G Out of stock everywhere :(

I'm having the worst luck. My wife and I ordered 2 brand new mytouch4g's last saturday through tmo customer loyalty for a total of 400 bucks (200each) for both phones. They didnt send the EIP acceptance until tuesday after i called them. I accepted they charged my card and I got a text message saying my order went to fulfillment Nov 12th. Well yesterday I called and they told me that the phone is backordered. wtf...! i already sold my current phones and now they don't even have an ETA of when the phones would be available. This is pretty lame.
Whoew!!!..really feel bad for you. But its a good thing, now that alot of people have mytouch 4g that means that this phone will be light up. All the dev team will be supporting this phone like crazy.

Man, never sell your phone until you have the new ones in hand, and then don't sell them until you had the new ones a few days and checked out any bugs. It's called "common sense" and it's not taught in schools anymore! I ordered mine on Sunday when the new plans came out, they shipped Monday and are arriving today. I'd like to get my Evos on ebay, but waiting for 1-30 days until they are checked out. I have 30 days to return/exchange them and cancel the contract so I'm not porting my numbers over until everything checks out, and that includes the billing. It's so easy for them to promise a given price on the phone and then have your first bill be totally different than what's quoted. Then, and everyone hates to do this, you have to call your carrier and have a big fight. I'll keep the number they issued me and have my sprint number "forwarded" to this phone while I check it out. This plan will save a lot of potential headache.
This doth not bode well. I just ordered another MT4G too. Ugh. I hope they get their supply issues resolved.
man, that really sucks...hope you have at least something to use for the time being. If not, you can probably pick one up off craigslist for dirt cheap to at least have a phone until they come in.
I never sell my old phones...my wife hates it, but I have a good 7 foot stack of phone boxes in our bedroom closet, and I constantly buy phones I dont even use from craigslist myself
My daughters will go through them once in awhile and want to use one now and then...but sadly, they always want to go back to their iPhones.
I bought my first one through TMO on launch day. But, I just ordered one for my wife on Monday through WireFly and it just came today. WAY better price than buying through TMO. Call them and you can get a better deal than what's posted on their site.
The only thing about them is they bombard you with "additional" great offers while you are on the phone with them. Don't buy their insurance plan, it's crap. I bought it and found out it didn't cover water damage at all, so no dropping the phone in the crapper by accident. And it won't cover theft from an unoccupied building... so if I leave my phone at home, go somewhere, and get burglarized; it won't be covered. Worthless. I called and canceled the crappy insurance. It's not eligible for a TMO $6/mo protection plan when you buy it through WireFly, but if you bring it into the store and show them it's not damaged, they will give you a $4.75/mo plan that is the same as their $6/mo plan, but the difference is that it doesn't include equipment malfunction/failure. Only covers damage or theft.
yeah i havent found it in stock anywhere in my area...i really want one !
wow that does suck they had a lot of them right by my house in cali. i just returned my white one for a black one at the store and they did it no problem. but if u dont have a phone, just go to a tmobile store and tell them what happened and try to get a loaner phone. thats what i had to do for a day cause i sold my hd2 so i can upgrade to the mytouch 4g but it wasnt gonna come out for another day when i sold my phone.
I bought 2 MT4Gs on NewEgg.com
I found the MT4G in stock on NewEgg...i ordered 2 (1 black and 1 White) i was about to buy them on amazon for $119 and saw they wouldnt be delivered until Dec. 28th...so went over to trusty NewEgg.com and they had the same price ...Ordered on Monday the 15th and will be delivered tomorrow...hurry the might still have them ..btw i checked back on NewEgg the following day and the price was up to 149$
FOLLOW ME ON TWITTER @Face_Melter we can be MT4G friends...lol
The stores are usually stocked... I would try there. Also they will let u swap within the 14 days at a tmobile store too even if you got the original phone from the 800 number.
I bought my mytouch 4g from newegg when it came our for $79. Last i saw target mobil was selling it for 79 too so check it out. I just dont understand why people are buying this phone for 200.
I got mine from Radio shack for $149(2 year upgrade). Plus Radioshack gave me $130 for my HD2 with wall charger and $60 for my G1 and wall charger. So I paid nothing for my MT4G. And I bought a car charger for it.

i ordered mine this morning from amazon before they went out of stock...still shows the shipping date as tomorrow, so hopefully it still gets shipped

You really don't understand the concept behind tiered pricing? Seriously?
I just ordered one for $267 and paid for 3 day shipping from retentions. Got tired of the Vibrant GPS not working. If I paid for 3 day shipping I better damn well get it. We'll see I guess.
I got my 4G Black, at costco, say would I be able to walk into t-mob and exchange for a red one? curious, as I still have a week before the 14 days are up.
it's those damn commercials that is making this phone sell like crazy

Considering selling?
My wife had problems with her MyTouch 4G speakerphone and had me get her a "simple" phone. I'm supposed to receive a brand new one from T-Mobile within the next week and I am thinking about selling it. What should I expect it should sell for? Thanks.

Since T-mobile is selling it for $450 new with buyers remorse, warranty, and option to add insurance, I would probably shoot for 400 if it's still unused.
I got mine on the day it was released, 10am my local tmobile store opened up and I was the 1st customer there. Paid like 320 for the MT4g cuz I wasn't in my full upgrade Price. but then I sold my HD2 for 350 so I thought hey Might as well buy the new phone... When I got home and the wife saw that I had the new MT4G she wanted one too. So I went back 2 days later and got the white one for her paid 200 for hers..
I think that all these 3rd party websites are ordering all these phones from tmo so that's why the main tmobile is backed ordered. But if you go to the stores they have them stocked up...

Insurance? Squaretrade?

I have the option to purchase squaretrade insurance/warranty for $99 since I bought from letstalk (instead of $124 by going directly to squaretrade).
I still don't understand how this works. Do you just pay the $99, then you can get a new phone even if you get something as simple as a small scratch on your current phone? Do you have to send the old phone back or can you just sell it for parts (assuming it's damaged).
I've never had phone insurance before, but I'm highly considering it because of the dust issue on the HTC sensations.
If you guys know of any other insurance, please let me know too. I've only had the phone 6 days so I have plenty of time to purchase insurance from anywhere.

Squaretrade does nothing if your phone gets lost or stolen. They cover just about everything else with a $50 deductible and roughly a 5 day turnaround.
The insurance t-mobile uses is Asurion and I have used them in the past. If you have a claim, you will need to go through Asurion for the claim and it takes 1 business day (T-mobile is not involved). Personally, I did receive my replacement on a Saturday after I filed a claim at 9PM on a Friday night. The big problem with Asurion is you only get 2 claims per 12 months and the Sensation has a deductible around $150 (it's still not listed on Asurion's site) plus a $5 fee.
The nice thing about Asurion is you get a replacement phone no matter what. Not to mention all they want back is the phone. You get to keep the accessories and battery from your old phone. They also will let you keep your old phone, but they charge another $250+ and it may be considered insurance fraud.

Horrible Customer Service Experience Tmobile

I want to put as much emphasize on this story as possible because I really want some useful advice. 2 days ago my phone was stolen. Since then I have been trying to get a phone because I run a business and by now 3 days I have lost half a grand easily.
Last month I switched my phone from a 2 year contract to a prepaid month to month plan. At this point tmobile does not offer insurance on the phone any longer. This is important because after paying $140 per month for this phone with insurance, the month I switch to the $50 per month plan it is stolen and tmobile says, "o well".
I said can I buy a new phone? They said no because you still owe us money for switching the phone to prepaid and $150 on the actual phone itself. I did not pay the money to switch because the previous month I had the money the lady on the phone said she would take care of it which I thought meant since I never actually left the company they werent charging me to change plans...not the case after all, but do not find out until my phone is stolen.
I had an HTC Amaze for the record. So I went home and called tmobile. I was on the phone about 25 min before the connection became so bad I asked for them to call me back. They got the phone number and then never called. I had been transferred 7 times by this point. I called back and explained I was very frustrated. They transferred me to a specialist. This lady had me on hold about 20 min. Finally she said we resolved the $200 fee but you still have to pay the $150 on the phone. I paid the $150 and she asked me if I want to buy the new phone now? I said no because I wanted the phone immediately so I would go into the store to buy it.
I got to the store and they said I still owed $200. Even if the $200 fee was resolved he told me I cannot get the discount on the phone I wanted and that I have to pay the full price of $600 because they do not give a discount on their phones more than 1x per 2 year contract! Even on a new line. So I was going to buy a cheap phone and he said he could keep my old number and use this cheap phone until I could buy the phone I wanted later. I told him the Staples accross the street sold phones if I could ask them if they sold me a phone for cheaper they could activate it. He said it would probably only take me 30 sec to go check and to see.
I got back to the tmobile store in about 2 min and he had gone on his lunch break. I waited about another 20 min before another associate helped me who did not have the same deal with a cheap phone he told me about. In stead of $160 total for everything he wanted to charge me $200 for everything. I was there for 2 hours and by this point I am extremely upset and I want to leave tmobile.
This is not my first bad experience with tmobile. I have been unhappy since I joined. There is no complaint department. You have to write out a letter and mail it in. I left out some details of why I am so upset because the bottom line of the story is I am just completely unhappy with tmobile. They treat you like you are nothing without them, and will be fine without your business. This may be true but I have been paying almost $150 per month for almost 9 months and now they want me to pay $200 when I am not even leaving their company, then my $600 phone which is fully paid off is stolen they not only do not help me, but they are rude and go on lunch after he told me to go ahead and check which would only take a matter of seconds. I ran to the store and back and he was on a 30 minute lunch, I am just unhappy with the whole company. I will not even go into details of when I was having trouble with the phone during the previous 9 months.
What I want to know is how do I leave a phone company without paying their fee. Its not right, I am leaving because their service is so unsatisfactory in my area, and now I need help they not only do not help but want to charge me full price to get my line back. If I switch to another company can I still keep my same number? I need the same number for my business and I would much rather not stay with this company. Could anyone recommend any links with information, or which service providers you prefer? Thanks.

Selling cracked phone under contract?

So I still have 18 months on my contract with Verizon, and I already cracked my Nexus. I'm wondering if I could sell this phone on ebay to pay for my deductible of $99, if someone was willing to pay that cost of course.
Does Verizon deactivate the device, or how is it handled? Thanks
You'd still be under contract, so, what would you do? Upgrade?
I'm slightly confused. You want to pay the $99 deductible to get a new phone, correct? You will be required to send in the broken device after getting the new one. If you don't, you will be charged the full cost of the replacement phone. With 18 months left, I don't think you can pay the small free for a premature upgrade (My understanding is that only works within the last 3 or 4 months of the contract).
Coverage includes lost and stolen devices. I wouldn't be required to send anything in, depending on what I said the excuse to claim insurance was.
Now back to my question. Does Verizon deactivate all devices and restricts network usage?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Well, if the phone is lost or stolen, then it has no business being used on the network, does it? Verizon will deactivate it, though you could still use it as an mp3 player, or a camera.
Id love to but I can repair that for cheaper and get new ones for 75 bucks but thanks for the offer.. and yes version does not let the phone be used after a lost or stolen phone... sorry

Sprint Corporate store's technical support, warranty, Total Equipemt Protection= FAIL

I bought a brand new Motorola Photon Q at FULL PRICE from Sprint a few weeks ago because I do NOT believe in contracts and remain contract free.
My phone shuts off every time I touch the Lock Screen button on top or when I BEGIN to slide out the QWERTY keyboard. (NO drops, cracks, scratches, water damage, abuse, etc verified by Sprint store)
I have the $11 a month Total Equipment Protection.
First, they can't fix my phone at the Sprint Corporate store.
Then, the want me to wait THREE BUSINESS DAYS for a REFURBED phone because the Sprint Corporate Repair Center does NOT have any in stock.
Lastly, the manager REFUSES to simply give me the ONE new Photon Q LTE they have in stock by telling me "If I give you a new Photon Q for your Total Equipment Protection Claim E-ticket I will be written up and face disciplinary action and/or lose my job."
Why the complete lack of service?
I am paying a HUGE MONTHLY PREMIUM of $11 a month for TEP, and my phone is new and still under the factory warranty.
Sprint is in the business to make monthly fees.
If I don't have a working phone, they can't charge me for monthly service.
If my Comcast cable box died, regardless of who owns it, Comcast would make it right..... even at their cost..... because they want my monthly payment.
I am NOT under contract with Comcast, and I am NOT under contract with Sprint either.
So, why aren't they bending over backwards to get a working phone in my hands ????
Not too long ago, you could walk into any corporate store and walk out with a free refurb with NO insurance and NO $50 fee.
This complete lack of customer service has me wanting to cancel Sprint and simply take my Photon Q LTE to the prepaid side or simply getting a new phone from another prepaid carrier.
This way, I can save money off of the monthly bill and just buy a cheap "backup" phone from Craigslist in case of emergencies so I can be my "own personal warranty and repair department".
PS.
The Sprint corporate store made me wait around for 4 hours.
This was after I IMMEDIATELY displayed, and duplicated 3 times, that my phone was shutting off every time I simply touched the "lock screen" button on top.
Any advice would be appreciated.
I look forward to hearing comments on Sprint's current customer service performance and policies as well.
They pulled the same crap with me when I tried to get my phone replaced. I ended up just saying **** it and replacing the parts myself. Though I am on a contract... But I also do pay for the TEP... I think their (lack of) support is ****. And it's really got me considering switching carriers.
I've been on the phone with Sprint customer service all day.
Been given nothing but a run around.
They have not located me a phone.
They have no idea where it will ship from.
They have no idea when it will ship.
My phone will not power up and I have been missing calls and texts for 2 days.
I keep requesting that they tell a Sprint store to give me a new phone, or even a refurb, and I will drive there to get it.
No one will agree to help me.
WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH SPRINT ??????
That really sucks...
What's sad nowadays, is companies don't really care unless you make a big stink... and perhaps you need to make a BIG one.
Post on all their social media outlets. I've heard of mountains being moved simply because an issue was made public.
I know it's a little late now, but the next phone you buy, I would recommend getting from Best Buy, and get their protection plan. I've been told that I can literally walk out the door seconds after buying a phone, "drop" it in the parking lot, walk back in, and get a new phone on-the-spot. The best part is, it costs the same as the TEP (or you can opt to pay in full for about $170 for 2 yrs of protection), and NO $100 insurance claim fee.
I don't mean to sound like a salesman, but I've had to do enough TEP claims to decide that most big business doesn't care anymore about the consumer. Best Buy's plan is the only one I've come across these days where I can leave with a brand new phone within minutes.

I totally agree on this one.

Now that sprint contracts out the TEP insurance stuff to asurion (asurian?) thats the procedure. I broke my Q's screen within a couple months of buying it and I had to go through the same crap were I couldnt get an in-stock phone immediately because if a screen is cracked, you must go through the TEP process, and if your phone isn't the hottest new thing selling, you will likely get a refurb.
I have had a quite a few refurbs in the past through TEP (all because of my own fault), and they have all been good working and good looking units. I broke the phone, so I would have taken almost any working phone. But in your case, I can see why its bothersome.
