This "media server" thing is getting ridiculous - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know there have been several threads on this already.
However, today for me it came to a truly ridiculous level.
I had charged fully and unplugged my phone before going to sleep.
Didn't use it this morning.
Now, this morning, I open it up and it's under half battery.
I click the battery in settings and this is what I see:

This was overnight. Nothing running. Just this f***ing media server eating all the battery.
There has to be a solution. Besides rebooting the phone every day.
I don't want to root the phone purely to solve this. Because I know if I do root there are ways to auto kill it and such. But I'd much prefer to keep it unrooted as I have no other need of root and it just seems... excessive.
Can anyone offer any advice? This is nothing to do with media players or whatever. I have no media files on my phone. Only use it for web browsing and games occasionally. The media server is just ...broken. I'm at a loss here, please, contribute your superior knowledge.
Thanks in advance.

I was having that mediaserver wake lock problem also. After rebooting twice a day for a couple days I finally figured out it was due to touch sounds being on. Once I turned touch sounds off I've been getting pretty good battery life with excellent standby.

I've never had touch sounds or lock screen sounds enabled. I checked again and they're off.
Any other ideas?

Media server is a process gg on to keep scanning for the pictures in ur phone. There is a way to disable it and will not harm ur fone. The app is called "Rescan Media Root" u can download it in google play. Open it and press disable. Most of the time the pics will still appear in gallery. If any recent pics u taken in ur camera or anything else is not in ur gallery, just go back to the app and enable it. Wait for arnd 5 mins and disable again.

Oh btw. U have to be rooted to use the app
Sent from my GT-I9300

It might be helpful to use an app like Clean Master, SD Maid or similar to nuke your browser and app caches to see if that helps. Sometimes the caches contain media files, and if any of them are corrupted for whatever reason the Media Server is apt to get stuck on them which can cause battery drain.

Tats why i said to use the rescan media root app from google play. It will disable to media server. But yeah its always best to clear the cache anyway for storage space. I use clean master and cleared over 7 gb in total for a few months.

The problem is that needs root, and my phone isn't rooted; and the thread about how to root it says it will wipe all data. Except without root titanium backup doesn't work fully and stuff. I just don't want to go there if I can avoid it.
I've got SD Maid now and hopefully that will help...

It will wipe his data because his bootloader isn't unlocked.
@DryEagle
The cache cleaner is a good recommendation. But I suspect you have a rogue app running that should not be running. I think that cleaning program has a task manager also. You should be able to find the source of the issue with that.
Get BetterBatteryStats also.

Samsung does not lock the boot loader for the gs3. Not for the international version.

Technically root won't wipe his phone but the chances of him having a unlocked phone and not adding root are slim.
You can try helium backup as I think it will do a local data only backup without root but honestly never tried it without root and have not read the Google play page in ages.
I can understand your desire to not less with root or unlocking but this is a good example of why a lot of people do. As it stands now without root you have few options to kill the rouge process or even figure out what that process is. Without root the only real choice your left with is factory reset but that will wipe your data. With root you can at least make a backup however unlocking your boot loader now will still wipe your phone.
Try better battery stats and see if that works without root (you can get it here on XDA) and if so it might help you at least figure out what app or process is forcing media to be such a battery drain.

Do you have Google Music installed? If so, try deleting it and see if that helps.
I have found that Google Music keeps running in the background, even if I never opened it.
I am rooted and froze Google Music, and the media server thing hardly ever shows up in battery stats now.

I use Google Music frequently, but on days when I don't use it Media Server takes hardly any battery.
OP - BBB should work without root for some features. I'd download that and give it a whack to see if you can identify the culprit. Might turn out to be something really random.

thanks for all the info guys; in the end i just bit the bullet and rooted the phone (figured might aswell do it sooner rather than later) so now i of course don't have this problems anymore ^^

edit : after wiping all 3 times each, phone seems to run a lot faster, this rom loads very quick, even on the 2.6.29 kernel. phone call test works as well, incoming & outgoing tested. no leds, as u stated, ill look around and see what i can do about that
Just make sure to wipe all 3 times before installing the rom.

1st time, went into cwm 2.5.0.7 and went into mounts and formatted system, data, cache, boot 3 times each and then went and wiped dalvik 2 times, rebooted recovery, flashed rom. market would show 2 results under apps, both were games
2nd time, used calkulins format all zip 5 times, wiped dalvik 3 times, rebooted recovery, flashed rom. market will only show book results, apps and games is completely blank.
should i flash gapps or no? i didnt think it was necessary since market was already on the phone
also, not using FR or any scripts

so this app is the beloved one to track your lost device and have it in your sight to make sure no one gets their hands on your loved droid
heres the description as in the google play
Cerberus helps you get back your lost or stolen Android device.
Cerberus is a complete anti-theft application, the best protection you can get to recover your misplaced, lost or stolen Android device. This is a free trial for one week, then you can buy a lifetime license for a small price (2.99€) from within the application: no monthly or yearly fees, just a one-time payment. License is associated to your Cerberus account, if you have multiple devices you can use all of them (up to 5) with the same account.
It has three ways to protect your device:
- Remote control through the website www.cerberusapp.com
- Remote control via text messages
- SIM Checker (for devices that have a SIM card): you will automatically receive alerts if someone uses your phone with an unauthorized SIM card
Remote control allows you to perform many operations on your device, like:
- Locate and track it
- Start a loud alarm, even if the device is set to silent mode
- Wipe the internal memory and the SD card
- Hide Cerberus from the app drawer
- Lock the device with a code
- Record audio from the microphone
- Get a list of last calls sent and received
- Get information about network and operator the device is connected to
- And much more!
Cerberus automatically enables GPS if it is off when you try to localize your device (only on Android < 2.3.3) and you can protect it from unauthorized uninstalling - more info in the app configuration.
The app works even if the device does not have an internet connection thanks to remote control by sms messages. Also, the SIM Checker feature allows you to know the new number to send texts to, if the SIM card is changed. Texts received and sent for Cerberus remote control will not start any notification and will not appear in the Messages application.
Cerberus does not drain the battery because there is no background service running: it will activate only if there is a remote control request and will stop afterwards.
More features for rooted devices: complete uninstall protection (a thief will be able to delete Cerberus only by flashing another ROM), GPS auto-enabling even on Android > 2.3.3. More info on the website in the Help section.
If you already bought SIM Checker Pro you can have Cerberus at a discounted price, contact us for information.

[GUIDE][HOW TO]Edit Earphones Connected

I don't know if others are having this problem, but many of the screen shots I took don't load at first. Try a few refreshes, it should make the how to easier to follow.
So I only recently tried this out. I haven't found any glaring issues with it, but a backup is recommended just in case. No warranty, I'm not responsible if somehow this breaks/bricks your phone, causes your phone to not dial during an emergency, etc.
Also I didn't really proofread this as I don't have a large amount of time available, so sorry for any dumb grammar errors. I'll look it over eventually.
I didn't like the choices that Samsung provided in the Earphones Connected options for the notification drop down. Here is example of the stock:
My original hope was to remove it completely, but I wasn't successful with my first attempts. Instead I found that I could edit the SQLite database contained within. This allows one to add custom applications as they see fit.
If you want to remove it completely:

Requirements:
Galaxy S3 with stock or near stock firmware (CM9/CM10 will won't have Earphones Connected options to my knowledge)
Root Access
SQLite Editor: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speedsoftware.sqleditor
Free version doesn't seem to work. Try if you insist:
SQLite Editor(Free version SQLite editor, thanks eschelon)
It appears the free one is a version behind. 1.4.1, maybe they will update it eventually.
Where the pay for app is 1.5
1.5 had some ICS compatibility added..
Step 1)
Open SQLite
You should get a screen like this:
Step 2)
Tap "TouchWiz home"
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Then tap "launcher.db"
Then tap "appOrder" ...
Step 3)
This should bring you to the SQLite table for your app drawer. This will list the info we need for launching the app of you choosing. For this example we will use Google Maps as our app of choice. The screen should like similar to this, (a jumbled mess):
From here you want to hit the menu button and select "Set Filter
Type in maps, and click ok:
Step 4)
Now you will have a bit more manageable table. Press and hold on maps until you get this pop up and select "Edit Record".
Step 5)
Scroll down and copy the "componentName" data:
Step 6)
Press back until you get to the database lists again. Then tap the "ContextAwareService"
Step 7)
Tap "logDatabase.db" ...
Then tap "appLogTable"
side note: sqlite_sequence determines what number the next entry will be in the table. This may be necessary to know in case there are too many apps in the table and the ones you try to add don't show on the screen. Also if I remember right setting this to 0 will reset you to default applications and clear your changes, although it doesn't always fix problems with crashes if you experience them. I would still do a nandroid and/or titanium backup just in case
Step 8)
You should now have a screen like this: (you may notice google play is already on my list, ignore that)
Press the menu button and select "New Record"
Side note: You can long press the other entries and delete them as you please if there are particular ones you don't want listed. I'd recommend at least screen shot before doing so. I wouldn't actually do this, as I think I found a more stable work around for unwanted apps: See here.
Step 9)
Warning a lot of people are gettings this error on this step:"Record creation failed-unable to open database file"
I am unaware of the cause or how to fix it as of yet. I am using the paid for version myself, so I don't know if that makes some sort of difference. I would doubt that it does. Also I am on the Bean rom.
Please post if you have failure or success and what rom you are using as well as if you used the free or paid version of the app.
Now paste the earlier copied text into the "activity_name" section.
Paste the earlier copied text up to the / in the "pkg_name" section (See the screen shot for example)
Tap "save"
side note:The last field "exec_freq_with_headset" seems to keep track of how many times you launch the app through the notification menu. So far it seems to order the most frequently used on the left, and the lest frequently used on the right. Although you shouldn't need to add any number there as it will default to 0. This should better explain the "exec_freq_with_headset"
Woot Done:
Plug in some headphones and see what it looks like:
Thanks for the idea:

Were the headphones still plugged in? Maybe it was still accessing the database when you attempted to edit it?
Another thought is to close out SQLite Editor and reopen it, maybe once you used Play Music it incremented the "exec_freq_with_headset" field and the editor didn't see the update yet.

I didn't plug the headphones in at all.
I will now try again after exiting the program completely
EDIT: Nope, still says "unable to open database file". The text fields that I copy from those apps are noticeably smaller than the one for Play Music....something to do with it?

Interesting...if I try to DELETE one of the entries, it also says "Unable to open database file"...there's a connection here that I'm not seeing

I'll try downloading those apps, see if I have any similar issues.
Working fine for me. I can post a screen shot later. I gotta run some errands.
Only tried Pandora, but it worked just fine. I have yet to run into the same problem with the database files not opening. Maybe a reboot or clear cache/dalvik cache. Those are my usual attempts when I feel stumped.
Looking forward to this. Will try this tomorrow

Thank you, will try this tomorrow and comment (edit) on if it worked for me.

nice. was just in the subway today wondering if there was a way to change those, since i would like to add spotify and poweramp in the list. thanks!
I messed up my database, somehow causing the process to continually crash. Which in the past I was able to delete everything and it went back to the default. This time it went back to default but still crashed. So I did a restore from titanium backup and it was back to normal. So probably backup in between each edit. Also the "exec_freq_with_headset" seems to be based on your total number of apps. So if you have like 10 total the one with 10 will show up on the far left, up to 5 will show. I hope this makes sense.
10 ... 9 ... 8 ... 7 ... 6
This seems to negate the need to delete any of them. Also I think deleting may have caused my process to crash previously.
Heres some screen shots to explain it: (if i put one of the app's "exec_freq_with_headset" to 11 it would shift all the rest to the right one and knock the farthest right one off the screen's visibility. But if I set to 12 I think it will cause crash issues.)
When I try to save (step 9), it won't and I get the error "Record creation failed-unable to open database file"
Happened when I tried to add MortPlayer, Listen, and Pandora. None would save. I'm rooted and running regular Touchwiz rom.
Also, I noticed that in Step 3 most of my apps were not listed, including many of my favorite audio apps. I realized that this is because I'm using a different launcher (Apex), and only the apps that were on the Samsung launcher before I started using Apex were showing up. To fix this, I cleared Apex as the default launcher, launched the Samsung launcher, let all the apps show in the app drawer, then started over with your steps. This time all the apps were there in Step 3.

You may be able to open the database for your particular home app instead of switching back. Just a thought.

Getting the same error using Bean's rom. Still on stock launcher and free sqlite editor
I get the error whether I try to add a new record or edit an existing one.

I tried the free version now that I got home and found I am getting the same error. I don't know how they are different, but it just won't work for me. I also couldn't get any screen shots while in the free app, I don't know why. I getting out my Gnex to take a photo of it not working.
It appears the free one is a version behind. 1.4.1
Where the pay for app is 1.5
1.5 had some ICS compatibility added.

Hi, first thank you for your work. Most people don't understand that you guys work for "free", other then donations. Secondly I am asking you directly because in working with this device I have gotten many different responses. Some have stated that roms written for the U8800-Pro will also work on the U8800-51 from Consumer Cellular. I haven't tried that because others have said installing your rom on my 51 would brick it. I have installed and am running Aurora ICS from this guide on XDA
From stock to ICS a guide for your U8800-51 or AT&T Impulse 4G
I don't want to do anything stupid so since this is your rom I was hoping you could give me a difinitive answer, can I use your ROM on the U8800-51? If not is there a ICS Rom you could recommend?
Thank you very much in advance, this is forum in very confusing and I want to do the right thing since it's not my phone but my husbands.

Huawei keyboard is one of the best I have ever seen!
It has one minus (when you type a web address, 'space' is replaced by '.com' by default - you need to press alt), but a huge plus (you can slide to obtain secondary characters instead of long-pressing).
File manager is balanced, not better or worse than others. It is very nicely integrated with the cloud.
Backup application is a good replacement for Titanium (backups data and applications)
I prefer the default 4.1.1 camera. Huawei application has some good points, but still I prefer the default from gapps. Also, please note that Hauwei Gallery does not sync with Picasa!
I don't recommend Huawei Weather, as it does not always work. on the screen in get a location not found.

Thanks for your opinion of this thread.
I think that you can try install ROMs for U8800 & U8800pro to your device. But if you like your current ROM so I recommended "don't try it". U8800-51 has different wi-fi and bt drivers so if you'll try install these ROMs your wi-fi and bt won't work. For recommending ROMs you must install all ROMs for your device because all users have diferents requirements.

I like stock camera app too. For weather: app is working but widget don't work. (widget works only on huawei stock ROMs).
This sounds interesting. I suppose this works with non-Huawei phones? As for the question about Gingerbread, I'm sure these work with a specific version of Android, or rather Huawei's version of Android, e.g. HTC Sense for HTC phones.
In any case, I am curious about the DLNA receiver (or maybe server?) and the keyboard. Had I found this earlier, I could have tested on a couple builds. Nandroid backup my AOKP ROM, then factory reset it, and flash this, test in a clean 4.1.2 ROM, then flash my CM7 Nandroid, factory reset that, flash this, test in a clean 2.3.7 ROM... Woulda been fun. Subscribed to this topic, I'll definitely do all that in a few days when I get a chance, and I will take screenshots if nobody's done it by then.
Thank you so very much. I'll play around with it a bit and let you know what I come up with. Your response is very appreciated and very informative.
Cheers!!!

Aroma appears to have installed nothing. Wallpaper chooser can be installed as a normal app (AFAIK, all wallpaper choosers can... so collect them from ROMs you test, if you like the wallpapers they offer...), not sure about the others. I checked them all in Aroma and it (TWRP I guess) said the flash was successful. But nothing installed. I can push them manually and set permissions accordingly, though.
Camera can be installed as a normal app as well. It's very nice, but it does not support the ICS/JB swipe to preview/swipe back to take another. Also can't seem to record video. It says my internal memory is full (it's not) and that it will save to SD card (that's fine) but pictures take and videos don't record. The record icon doesn't change.
DLNA *seems* to work, but it times out when trying to connect. So does ES File Explorer. Fault: Most likely mine. I suck at networking. I tell Windows 7 to share my damn files and that should be that. Give "Everyone" read permission and no one "write" permission (because f*** you you can't edit my damn files son, but you can look at them). My brother got DLNA (via MotoBlur) to work with PS3 Media Server running in Windows. We use that to stream from PC to Xbox, guess we need it for Android as well (or we could learn networking and not be such chumps, but PS3MS is easy mode).
Not messing with File Manager or Cloud. I already have the best file manager (ES File Explorer, IMO it's the best) and I have a ton of clouds. It feels disingenuous to use Huawei's without buying a Huawei device. They can see you've never used a Huawei device and they can close your account. Whether they will or not is another matter. Dropbox will give you 2GB, Google Drive will give you 5GB, and so will a bunch of others, like Box, SugarSync, and Ubuntu One (the latter doesn't care if you use Ubuntu or not). Amazon also has a 5GB cloud, but no Android app (this is separate from Amazon MP3, which does have an app).
Anyway, thanks for sharing.
i just installed DLNA app, but it doesnt work properly... I cant select folders to share.....i dont think im doing something wrong....

RS_###.log files in /data

Greetings
I have hundreds of files named RS_###.log in /data, all around 1000 Bytes.
They seem to be generated several times each day. Opening them produces a file with a bunch of numbers (pic)
I don't like it. It reminds me of the HTC logging debacle.
Can someone shed some light on this? My research came up fruitless.
Thank you

Unknown. I too had hundreds of them. I just did a batch delete.
I am running SlimRom's 4.2.2 Build 7 on the device atm, with lean kernel and crossbreeder.
Now, I literally have ~300 user apps on the phone, so my chance of tracking it down is slim to none, unless there is a 'file monitor' tool that can be used to historize what apps interact with what files (creating another .log file ). Is anyone aware of such a tool?
-t
That would be a good idea.
So no problems after batch delete? Do you do that weekly or something?
Batch delete rocked my system bad. I wouldn't advise that. Good thing I had a nandroid
I have 41 of them in my /data folder, all dated 2013/07/12. I didn't do anything special to the phone at all that week because we were on vacation, so I don't know what might have generated those files.

I have >200. Many from July 29. Not sure the significance of that date either.
Also surprised this thread isn't blowing up...
I've got a bunch of them too. Had two files created today, both with the same time. I checked the file properties and it shows the "owner" and "group" as camera, which is kinda scary. Makes me wonder what the camera is up to. My pictures are backed up to Google+, so I thought maybe it had something to do with that, but the oldest file was created on 7/30/13 and I've been backing up pictures a lot longer than that. I hate not knowing why these are being created.

Bump
I've Googled RS log every way I can think of. The only thing I could come up with is an rs debugging log, which, according to Google, has something to do with app development and should be turned off before an app is released. Unless it is a really popular app, I doubt all of us downloaded or updated the same app unless it was a Google app. They have released a bunch of updates lately: maps, play store, play services, hangouts, etc. And we all know all the updates worked perfectly! At least some of those apps use the camera, so that could tie in. Or maybe it had absolutely nothing to do with any of this and I just lost 5 minutes of my life typing this :sly:

OK, I think I may have something, but maybe someone else can try this to confirm it. Looks like it is Google Hangouts. Anytime i start a video call the file rs_0.log, rs_1.log, rs_11.log, are written too. Also there are files named cam_socket0 and cam_socket1 in /data. If I only use the front facing camera then cam_socket1 is written too. If I switch to the rear camera then cam_socket0 gets written to also. I've made 4 video calls this morning just to try it, every time I would then check the file properties and the access date and time matched when I made the call. I'm assuming it is renaming all the log files so that rs_0 is always the latest. If someone else can confirm this that would be great.

Hmm... Well... I'm still thinking it has something to do with apps interacting with the camera. But chasing it/them down may be difficult. I just get worried about the camera being used without me knowing it.

or the feds remotely switching your phone mic and camera. That was in the news the other day.
On another note, I just reflashed a clean install and haven't taken any pictures yet. ALSO...no RS log files yet. You may be on to something my friend...
Lol, well if it's the feds I'll have to give them some special pics! I'm probably already on some watch list anyway, so what the heck.
I took some pictures and it didn't change the rs log, so I'm thinking it is other apps accessing the camera. I know it happens with hangouts but there maybe more. I'm guessing it's something of google's and probably fairly harmless, but would still like to know.

Speaking of "still," I'm "still" baffled by why nobody else has brought this up........
I've seen these too. No idea what causes them. They can get quite numerous.
I just use:
Code:

They don't seem to cause any problems, but I still wonder what the heck they are.

I did 2 video calls through Hangouts last night and I still have just the files from July 12. The cam_socket files were created at about the time of the calls though.
