I don't know if it bothers you, but it bothers me. Does it bother anyone else who switched from a Galaxy S4 to a Nexus 5 that the function buttons are on screen and not dedicated to the space below?
It hasn't bothered me much so far until I launched a few apps I use for work. The usable screen is smaller due to the buttons.
Anyone else annoyed? Are there any alternatives to this?
The 1/4 of an inch of black space below the screen on the Nexus 5 should be utilized in some way in my opinion, kind of annoying that it's rendered useless.
Annoyed by on screen and physical buttons even more. Use LMT app
Hey,
have you ever thought about using a custom ROM?

Wait for Paranoid Android to come out then use PIE. It allows you to set the nav bar to 0, which eliminates it from the screen, making your usable screen space bigger, and defaults to PIE. Basically you just swipe up from the bottom of the screen and it gives you the nav keys on a cool little popup menu.
Skip to 2:50 on this youtube link for set up and demonstration at 4:10.

As above there are custom roms that allow you to change the height. Also once PA comes you will have pie or use LMT until it arrives

What they said:
1. Use a CM-based ROM or like, any of the 90% of custom ROMs that have a substantial number of features, and you'll find an option to change navbar height under the ROM settings. I use 40dpi, it's great. PIE controls, however interesting, don't offer any advantage for me because with a shrinked navbar I can just hit the buttons but PIE complicates things.
2. I think Cataclysm or Purity has an option for full immersive mode in which the buttons and statusbar are hidden until you swipe from the corners of the screen.
Well you bought the device yourself and you knew there were no buttons right? So I think it's strange it bothers you that much. You should have stocked to your SG4 if you ask me. Don't get me wrong here, coming from a one X I also miss the buttons but that's what you get when you buy a nexus device.

I understand that but to me it makes sense to either stretch the screen farther towards the bottom of the phone or move the buttons from on-screen to the space below. That's all I meant.
For the other suggestions, I did install LMT to use for now and so far so good.
Thanks for the help.
just use Cataclysm rom and use immersive mode like above mentioned posts. its great and you can make it a quick toggle

There are many phones which do this to choose from. On screen buttons are integral to the way Google wants their OS to work from now on as they can change dynamically based on the apps needs.
What you're really complaining about is the lack of Immersive Mode (full screen) support in applications. Every app could use the bottom section of the phone if the developers implement it.
I'm coming from an S3, which has a 4.7 inch screen and hardware buttons, so I think that I won't have too much of a problem adjusting because 5in - navbar is about 4.7inch, which is what I am already used to on my s3.

I understand you think that's what I'm saying. Attached is a terribly edited photo I hacked up in Paint. I understood the way the phone was designed before purchasing it and still favor the Nexus 5 over the S4, but this is all I was saying.
They should have physically expanded the screen to relinquish the black space. Had the done it this way, could have easily added an entire row of more apps/folders.
Just an observation - not the end of the world.
I hated it when I moved from the S2 to the GNEX. The black bar for the navbar also drove me nuts but the GNEX was garbage in general.
When I got the N5 after using the LG OG for 11 months, I thought I'd hate the navbar again but it doesn't bother me anymore probably cause the background is translucent and all the nav key alternatives were annoying and ugly.

It is kind of annoying that you're not really getting the 5 inch screen and more of a 4.7.
I never understand why people are so against capacitive buttons. You need the back, home and menu keys most of the time anyways, you might as well have them at the bottom of the device. Unless phones become wayy more squared off you will always have some room at the bottom as well.
The only thing I do like better on the s4 is that the back button is on the right. I use the back button way more than the recent button. the N5 layout feels like a left handed device to me. I'm not complaining BTW just saying.

I have a tendency to do the same thing with the stock keyboard, hitting the period instead of the space bar. It is because the keyboard is not centered due to the arrow buttons and stock buttons on the right. I have found that sliding my fingers more under the phone with the left hand versus the right hand helps. I've also tried searching for an alternative keyboard, but found nothing I was pleased with. I do like the stock keyboard, with the exception of those arrow buttons on the right, even though I do find them handy at times.

You have to long press in the text input area and select input method and choose your keyboard. Well at least for me on the Unity rom it sticks that way. YMMV on stock or other roms

There are ways and then there are ways to approach a newbie question.... I know, because after more than 10 years as a Windows Mobile user I just switched to my first Android a couple of months ago and browsed here looking for an answer to this very same question. If you have an Inspire (like I do) and, quite surely, got it from AT&T (like I also do), then you'll face the same problem like the guy who started this thread (changing your default keyboard is just NOT an option, aka hidden by the AT&T "geniuses" by default....). But I tried this option quoted above and worked for me. (Thanks, sparker!!) At least till I reboot my phone, I guess....
Again, there's always more than one way to approach a question, regardless how naive it may sound!!

Fi you have a problem in landscape with it taking up too much of the screen, remember the key height is adjustable which makes more room for the entry fields...it took me a little bit to figure that out...
Tried many of them and keep going back to "Go keyboard"
I posted this in the Samsung Galaxy S2 section by mistake, when I should of posted it here. Didn't realize there was 2 different sections, anyho...
I just go this phone yesterday and all I have to say is WoW. This screen and performance is just amazing. I came from an X10, obviously no camprison, the S2 is a beast (in a good way).
What has really impressed also besides the speed and screen is the following built-in stuff:
Task manager, file manager, the fact that you can add a pattern lock and don't have to slide to unlock, the music controls in the notifications, the voice call controls in the notifications, the timer/stopwatch included in the clock, the neat graphics when you cut-n-paste is cool and even the magnifier when selecting text. I'm really impressed by Samsung's attention to detail.
A few small gripes though (nothing major):
1. No LED notification
2. No dedicated Camera button
3. I wish the USB port was on the top with the 3.5mm jack. Why? When I'm playing music in my car and I have to charge it and it's plugged into the 3.5mm it's awkward to place the phone on the center console.
(but these are very minor issue compared to the gains this phones has).
And another thing I don't know why people keeping complaining about this phone's plastics. I think it's a very well built/sturdy phone.
Sony is really behind, I don't think even their new Sony S/Ion will be a match for the S2 let alone the S3.
Edit: I just found out you can do a screen capture without having to root the thing. It keeps getting better and better.
Glad you are enjoying it. I think you will continue to for a long while. Not much to not like about it huh...
If you only knew how much better it could be if you root. It would answer your 1st two complaints.

NoLED lights up your screen with a different colored pixel depending on what type of message is new. It might use blue for gmail, purple for outlook email, etc.
I prefer to use BLN myself. Lights up the bottom row of buttons when I have a new email or message.

Exactly -> inefficient & the default colors made it looked quite ugly. I actually really like the way BLN Control makes my phone look when all 4 buttons at the bottom are lit up and the phone is off...
Now if only they could find a way to light up specific buttons for specific message types! I wouldn't have to add MissedIt! to my lock screen to quickly see what type of new message I have.
I thought I was done with this phone when I got my Note, but after using the Note for over a month and getting irritated with the lag, I fired up my Skyrocket and was so impressed with how fast and smooth it was, I immediately switched back to it. Its everywhere.... Where do I start? there is a delay unlocking the phone once your finger swipes, opening apps is slow, pressing home button to return to home screen is delayed (after disabling the home button in svoice), pulling the notification window down randomly stutters. Most of these are random and inconsistant, but 1 that I have found is ALWAYS an issue is in the Samsung Browser. Do this to see the lag. at the top there is the window notification in the broswer that shows how many open windows there are. Press it and see how long it takes to display the other windows.
The lag is everywhere... Had I not returned my HTC One to get this I would return it in a second, but they wont accept a second return now, so im stuck with a crap phone....
Im sorry that everyone is having these issues but mine seems fine and if it is lagging then maybe im not a super user and to me it dont seem to be a problem , my only issue is the keypad I keep hitting the numbers when typing and letters when spacing . And the windows tab opens pretty quick to me bout .9 of a second and it opens.

use a different browser and see how fast it is. Thats the problem .9 seconds is lag, I guess were use to different speeds. If you are coming from a craptastic phone that had alot of lag you wont notice it as much as someone who is use to a fast phone like a Nexus 4 or HTC One. Those phones are blazing, and honestly my old Note 2 was faster than this S4.

After playing a bit with the one I do agree that it is quite a bit snappier however something about it just seemed boring. As for the lock screen I do agree and I was able to help the issue a bit by switching to the ripple effect apposed to light under lockscreen effect. Also switching to thumb keyboard greatly improved speed there. However after using it for a few days the little bit of lag either gotten better or I just notice less.
Might be just that , ive been on a htc vivid since November 2011 and it got to be a pain in the arse to use. Hopefully they will have something that will fix it soon.

with already having root, and the bootloader unlock already verified to be coming soon, i think you would be doing yourself wrong to get rid of your gs4. since we now know that custom roms will be on their way. and since we know that custom roms do perform better than stock roms.
Anyone who says their S 4 doesn't lag is either lying, blind, or seriously has never used a lag free phone. I don't see how its going to be fixed either since its mostly due the the extraordinary amount of bloat in this version of Touchwiz with a tone of useless "features" that are also responsible for taking up so much memory space. I have an iPhone 5 which is lag free like all iPhones ever and a Note 2 which has a minor amount of lag in a few places. The shoddy cheap plastic construction, bloat, and minimal memory space is an insult to Samsung customers. At least the buttons are better but Samsung is out of control everywhere else. Ugh. They msut really think their customers will put up with anything they deign to slop down to them.
I did notice a tad bit of lag here and there and to me the 3 main contributions to lag in any s4 are this
1- stock browser ie. Keyboard lag
2-stock launcher, I use go ex
3-att crap bloat, I've deleted not disabled it all
My s4 is f'in fast as hell with no lag after addressing those three items

I just got the kit kat update for Tab 3 8. I live in LA California. Wifi only and I had to force it using the check for updates option. So I can list a few differences I'm noticing. I'm pretty sure all this stuff is new but some of it might be stuff I missed with 4.2.2.
Transparent notification bar.
New multiwindow experience. Now it does not have that little tab hanging over the side. Now you swipe it in from the side. I haven't played with it, I still find it unusable.
You can customise the toggle ribbon more now. You still have to have tons of icons but you can pick the order and take a few out.
The lock screen has a now playing type widget that looks nice.
On-screen keyboard toogle for bluetooth keyboards. I actually am trying to write a screenplay on this tablet and I had to buy a stupid app to fix the stupid keyboard the stupid way it worked be stupid fore and now it works better and I bought a stupid app for stupid nothing. But I'm glad it works better now.
That's all I've noticed so far. I also don't use touchwiz, I use nova.
Tell me what you guys are noticing or if you find an official list of changes let me know. Thanks everybody

Jacksonville, FL here and no update available yet.
Cosmetically it's hard to notice the difference on the firmware, but under the hood there are some serious changes to the firmware, but all for the better.
The "Transparent Notification bar" was there on JB 4.2.2,
And "Multiple windows" is very functional now.
● TouchWiz is lighter and smooth now...
(I'm so happy with it's performance now, to the point I didn't bothered to install the Google Now Launcher yet...)
● Third-party apps can't write to External SD card anymore...
(There is a way if you root the device)
● Some extra new Wi-Fi settings.
● The keyboard is improved and the "Picture gallery" and other factory apps also received some TLC for the better.
But for me, the "Multiple User capability" is definitely th e Icing on the cake.

I was hoping the autobrightness would get fixed. For me it's always way too dim. Where is the light sensor?

Autobrightness is horrible on the Tab3, it's fine on my S5 as well as previous S2 and other Android devices I've used. But the Tab3 Sucks, I'm always taking it off auto especially durring the day, dim as hell lol
So far it looks like we have only 54 days left until the end of HTC's promise window and according to HTC's website our device is in the 3rd of 5 stages of development, the 5th being release.
Has anyone heard anything that would indicate a time frame sooner than the 1st of February?

And then we wait for the carriers to pass all their inspections.. So I'm thinking the carrier will have the build within the 90 but how long do they test and hold it until release? Hopefully HTC gets it to the carriers by the end of this month so we can have a release by Feb
I'm excited to try out lollipop with sense on top but I will say I'm pretty satisfied with GPE lollipop builds now and very happy to have it so early and running great.

What does anyone think of the leaked images over on Phandroid of the OS in action?
I wish they would change the lockscreen to something more AOSP-like, but I suppose its not as horrible as it could be.

I wish they'd keep more of the material Google look. It looks like more of the same from Android 4.4 to be honest.

Hey, at least it's not that crap Samsung is pushing. Completely ruined the best looking Android yet.
The card-based app switcher is objectively worse than the old 3x3 grid, where you could see everything at a glance without any scrolling, know exactly where to tap (even before the thumbnails appeared), and it would require only a single tap to switch to/close any window or close all apps.
Thumbnails in a vertical/horizontal stack is similarly terrible.
What happened to efficient design?

It is odd, but I think I could do with the current format as long as they included a close all button somewhere in that screen. It just that when I think about it I tend not to go back more than 4 apps in my history when switching, and more often just go to close all recent apps.
We don't really need a close all button. You can already close them all at once by opening the recents pinching 2 fingers together on the screen. Simple.

But that's not a really intuitive gesture when working with a stack of cards.
I'm shocked there doesn't seem to me more discussion of this. I've seen some leaked picrures and descriptions of new features/layout recently. Looks good! I'm hoping January is the month we get it.

That doesn't work in Digitalhigh's latest GPE, or I've misunderstood you. But I've tried dragging two fingers toward the center from top and bottom and left and right with the recent apps open, and I've tried swiping up on Recent while swiping down from the top. Several times. Nothing happens. But, DH has implemented a close all button, so maybe he disabled the gesture you describe.
Personally, I'm a fan of the windshield wiper method. Open recents, and swing your thumb back and forth on the screen, horizontally. Like a windshield wiper. It's fun in a Fruit Ninja kind of way. Not really, but I tell myself it is.
As for HTC's 90-day guarantee, I'm expecting end of February. I bet they'll have it out for the international users by the end of January, and then pass the buck to Verizon and Sprint to get it done in a month. They never specified who would get the update, just that they would get it out. International users don't have to worry about carrier BS, so I'm thinking maybe the 90-day promise just applies to them.
But hey, I'm running Lollipop now and it's stock Android, and I couldn't be happier with this phone. But if Google continues making Nexus phones available here in the US (and by that I mean operable on national American carriers), I might just go that route. I just hope the 2016 Nexus 8, the new phone presumably coming out this year (leaving alone speculation as to what they call next year's), isn't 8" across. Give it a saner 4.7" diagonal measurement, and an 8MP camera on the front, hence the name.
Maybe a good sign.
