[Q] Nexus 5 takes too long to send sms - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi! I have a Nexus 5 and I realized that it takes about a minute, minute and a half to send a long sms, is this normal? Even a litle sms it takes 30 sec. Im asking this because in other devices I had, it was quicker to the sms being sent. Thank you!

Hmmm...
What app do you use? Hangouts? Old SMS?
This should not be happening.

Im using hangouts. What should I do?

Just to clarify, you have service right?

Yes I do. The sms are sent and I have good 4g connection, just take more time than usual. I never had problems with calls for example. Can be the hangouts app?

What network are you using? Do you have good signal?
Sent from my Nexus 5

Im from Portugal, Im using Vodafone Portugal and yes I have good signal! I make calls and surf the internet with no problems at all.

Look for another SMSC number for your carrier. Maybe that one is having troubles. Generally they have at least 2 numbers.
Once you find the new one then go to *#*#4636#*#* then hit Phone Information then click SMSC and put in the new number then update.

I tried that now and didn't work. On the right side of SMSC I have 2 "update" buttons, if I put the number and hit the first button, it says "update error" and if I hit the second button it shows other number, not the one that I put there. Can't be a problem with hangouts?

Problem solved!
Hi! Found the solution, I disabled the 4G and chose 3G in settings, now the sms are sent much quicker! This is probably a problem with my network, Vodafone Portugal, and not with my device right?

Well, at least you found a way to solve your problems.
SMS isn't sent over data network...I have no idea what's wrong with Vodafone. Have you tried sending SMS with 3G/4G completely off?

If you're using hangouts I think you need data on
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk 2

I think that data is tied to MS but for sms? Odd

I had the same problem rogers had some goofy APN in the phone so I changed that then in the 4636 menu put it on wdma prefered and in mobile networks set to 3g seems to be better now

I tried sending SMS with 3G/4G completely off and its quicker too, so with 2G or 3G the SMS are delivered quicker than on 4G. Its odd but its happening. For now I'll keep my phone in 3G. Thank you all for the help!

Have you tried a different Sim in your phone? Or tried your existing Sim in another phone?
This doesn't sound like an option setting

england? anyone got an idea what causes it? I never had this problem with this sim in my htc hd2
I have been having the same issue, not receiving calls and then getting a text message about 10 minutes later from my provider notifying me that I have missed said call lol.
Try changing your network settings to 2G only, I've been looking into this issue recently, and I came across a thread somewhere that it can be caused by the phone getting stuck in HSDPA or HSUPA mode, and not changing back to 2G to receive calls and text messages, or something to that extent.
TL/DR
Try 2G only, report back.

There are, for some people at least, problems with s/w 1.47.xxx.x (Settings->About phone->Software information) - see
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1190347
and
http://androidforums.com/htc-desire-s/396171-signal-drops-completely-htc-desire-s.html
If you read through these posts you'll see incoming calls failing/going straight to voicemail is one of the issues noted. Some posts suggest HTC have admitted there is a problem.

Nexus 5 dropping me off Network ??

So I got my nexus 5 on Friday and its perfect none of the mentioned defects was having some small issues with the notification light but that's all. However I noticed once a day since getting it I go to use my phone and it says emergency only / Rogers and I won't be able to make calls or receive calls. Anyone else experiencing this problem ?

I'm on Bell and for some reason sometimes I'd have no signal out of no where then it'll jump back to full bars the next second... Really annoying unless this is a normal thing for the Nexus 5

I'm on Rogers and I get this too. I usually fix it by going into network mode and change it to 3G and back to LTE immediately.
I still get incoming calls even though I can't dial out until I do the above change.
Its network problem not the nexus 5

I have the similar problem i'm on rogers and if the signal gets weak it will show signal strength in the home screen, i can surf the internet(data), but will not send text messages or make calls, if I try to make a call it say "cellular network not available", if i turn air plane mode on then off it reconnects right away. this has never happened with my GE Galaxy S4

I have the exact same issue guys, I hope that it has nothing to do with our nexus 5's.
im getting this error too. darn! its not normal for a phone to be like that. never happened to my previous one.
there must be something wrong with the phone.
im on Fido.
but its only happening to canadian network? weird.
maybe they're torturing people who didnt buy from them? lol
It looks like I have a similar issue.
My connection sometimes gets lost. Some sort of hiccup when connected to mobile network.
No issues found on WIFI
I'm on a hspa network in Canada and wanted to report that I get worse reception with the N5 than I did with my Galaxy S2. I hope it is easy fixable with a new modem flash or other update.
Just wanted to contribute in case there is anyone working on this and wanted some more info.
I had to change my data plan because, according to T-Mobile (US) it was not compatible with the phone. I could get emails and SMS text messages but could not get Internet data services (kept being prompted to log onto the network and presented with the T-Mobile logon screen). Lost my unlimited data, which I was grandfathered into (but found out that they were throttling me at 5 GB which I don't usually hit). I knew they would eventually make me change my plan anyway and was able to get a new 4.5 GB plan at the same price. Since T-Mobile will be offering this phone very soon (tomorrow? they're taking pre-orders now), I guess a lot of long-time customers will be pushed off their unlimited data plan.
I have the same problem!! It's really annoying - mine gets dropped every 2-5 mins! Is there a way to fix it? Is it the N5 or Rogers network?
I have the same problem in Belgium:

If you are constantly getting poor signal it might be the handset. If you have good signal, and can use data, but have "Emergency calls only" instead of a carrier name, it's probably a carrier issue.
I am on Fido and have randomly had the same problem. There's another thread somewhere, and most if not all people reporting the problem are Rogers/Fido customers.

right here man
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2525583
good point though... i don't see anyone from other canadian carriers complaining.
I also have this problem. I am on Fido in BC. Sometimes it will completely cut off the network signal from full bars to no service, similar to no sim card installed. It goes back to normal in about 5-6 seconds by itself but its definitely annoying.

yeah its the phone and not the network, I switched my Rogers sim to my old phone and get full bars
I too am experiencing this and i'm in the UK. Just wanted to let you know that this may be more widespread thank we think.
Same issue with Tmobile
definitely the phone and not the carrier. I have a samsung galaxy s2 and n5 and it only happens on n5. Both on tmobile in portland oregon

It is a software issue. I switched to a different ROM and kernel.
Cataclysm ROM and bricked Kernel.
So far, the connection is solid with this combo.

[Q] No data on straight talk

I tried all the setting I found online, still no data.
Got the new sim card yesterday - blue - tf64psimc4mb ($7)
Calling & texting works.
also not receiving mms
my issue is that I am using newer att sim and suddenly my speeds used to be LTE but more often than not are now indicating H or H+ and signal is weaker. started right before Thanksgiving thereabouts. I haven't even come close to the the 2.5 GB cap either.
How I fixed it..
Called straight talk, guy had me setup new apn again (same thing).
still didnt work. Then he did something (not sure what)
then he said turn off (not just restart) and turn back on.
Then it worked.
Hope this helps someone.
still can't receive mms
Try these apn settings: http://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus5/comments/1qe6jm/working_apn_settings_for_receiving_mms_on/
I had MMS issues, mainly sending and these seemed to have helped.

[Q] Sms a lot quicker on 2G/3G than on 4G, why?

Hi! If I have my Nexus 5 in 4G, everything works great and fast, except the sms that take about 1 minute to being sent when they are a little big (4 or 5 parts). But on 3G, the big sms are sent right away, only take a few seconds like usual. I know thats not a network problem because I had the note 3 before and everything worked fine on 4G, the sms were sent very fast. Can this be a software problem on the Nexus 5?
Not disputing your findings but just know that LTE is a DATA only application now. So even if you have "LTE" displayed up top, you are still using the WCDMA (AKA 3G) air interface to send SMS.
Why it would send faster if LTE data is disabled i have no idea. The SMSC stays the same on either one so it shouldn't matter.
That's my question, why its a lot faster in 3G, I don't understand this because makes no sense. I want to enable 4G but annoys me that takes so much time to send a sms. But can this be a software problem? Or hardware? I don't know if I should return my device or not.
I believe it has to switch from LTE to 3G/H/H+ to send the sms. It only has 1 radio chip with 1 antenna. So you can only use 1 radio at a time. I have noticed when watching my phone while sending SMS, that LTE switches to 3G/H/H+, then the SMS sends, then LTE comes back.
Because SMS isn't sent using 4G. If you're on 4G, it switches to 3G in the background to send the SMS.
Same for a voicecall. Your phone will switch to 3G. LTE is data only.
So can be the phone that takes some time to change for 3G and it makes the sms to take more time to being sent? I understand what you guys are saying but I don't understand whats the problem in my phone and how can I solve this.

your solution: turn off lte.
thats the only way to solve the issue you are describing.
But can this be a hardware problem? Should I return my phone? I want to be able to enable LTE and do everything fast, like I have done with other phones and everybody does, this isn't suppose to happen, right? I have a 4G phone and its like a 3G one, I think you understand my frustration.

[Q] Very bad connection on 2G/EDGE

Hello all
My Nexus has very bad connection on 2G/EDGE. When I use the same SIM-Card in my Galaxy S3, I have full 2G connection. The 3G/4G connection works fine on my Nexus.
I have reset my Nexus already. -> No success.
Do you have any idea?
Sorry for my very very bad english.
flash the latest radio and see if that fixes it.
Maybe you are covering up the antenna with your hand
Why is this an issue? Are you trying to save battery?
I have stock Rom and no root. So i wouldnt flash something. And no I'm not covering the antenna with my hand.
And i need 2G, because in Switzerland are many many places without 3G or 4G.

Happens to me too - for example on 2G, sometimes FB messenger works in that I can see the incoming messages, but I can't send any messages. Also sometimes I receive texts (SMS) hours later than they were sent by the other person.
I think it's something related to LG haha, my Optimus 2X did it as well!
