My bbm app uses too much ram - Galaxy Note 3 Themes and Apps

For all the BlackBerry had in getting their Blackberry Messenger ready to compete against the likes of Whatsapp on Android and iOS it stills remains a poorly coded app. After their last update things really took a turn for the worse as i noticed that for my Nova Launcher seemed to redraw itself more regularly on my Galaxy Note 3 which has 3GB of on board RAM. On checking the Application manager i found the culprit which had managed to use over 300MB of RAM, rebooting my phone seemed to solve the problem but three hours later and a few messages sent it had managed to use 210MB of RAM, which is ridiculous considering that this is just a mere chat app not a graphics intensive game, comparing it to the other chats that i had on my phone like Whatsapp which used about 10MB of RAM and Facebook messenger which used just a little above 24MB.

uninstall it.
usless.

RAM question

I don't have that many apps installed and I don't use any widgets but I only have about 35mb of available RAM. I only started noticing this after I did the OTA update. Is this normal? Thanks for any feedback.
Sounds fishy, I've got about 214MB free and run more than one widget and use plenty of apps. Do you have some sort of a task killer app like Advanced Task killer? What apps do you have running at the moment?
I have like Facebook, Google voice and android keyboard. I'm stock rooted and have some bloatware frozen. I have no idea what is causing this. Some others are android core apps and logs provider?
Well the only way I use up that much ram is if i'm doing a lot of multitasking but all three of those apps are the largest users of RAM in my running services list lol just sayin

That is so wierd...im running many many services yet my ram stays <50%....im on MIUI and frequently use its app killer frees up like 100mb of ram everytime with one click
I have like about 100MB RAM free if I don't clear up RAM for about 2-3 days (well, I do clear it up once in a couple of days if there is any lag). Otherwise I normally have 100-200 MB free. On a fresh boot up, it shows 250+ MB free.

So should I factory reset? Odin? Don't know what else I could do.

When in doubt start over I guess, factory reset from CWM which will get rid of apps/data, check you ram usage from there and if you still have subpar Ram usage, somethings probly up. You could even Odin back to bone stock and check from there too...

How are you freeing the RAM? I don't personally use whatsapp but I know some instant messaging apps (such as Touch) use a dedicated service for push notifications. By "killing all" you might be killing a service which is running in the background and notifying you when you receive messages.
When whatsapp is working - if you go to Settings > Apps > Running, is there a whatsapp entry listed?
"what happens when I free ram" - You kill all the background apps and free their resources.
This means that stuff like whatsapp and clocks might stop working untill they are restarted.
Most decent task killers have a feature to 'protect' apps of your choice, which means these tasks wont be killed (and, obviously, wont give you their ram usage back).
But on samsung mobiles it doesnt

Not sure why it wouldn't be the same with Samsung phones, but I mean really, this phone has a whole gigabyte of RAM. I think without killing tasks the phone can still handle itself

My TF101 is constantly out of memory haha, the S is not far behind :silly:
Well maybe cuz I'm on cyanogenmod, I have like 400+ mb of RAM at pretty much all times, and that's plenty for me

Greenify--Take control of your background processes

Don't know how many of you saw this, but I installed it last night, and it's awesome.
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/greenify-keeps-your-android-running-smoothly/
Basically, it allows you to stop apps from running in the background without disabling them. You can still run them like normal, but they don't eat up RAM when you're not. It does stop background functions, but many of the apps I see running like this don't do anything for me in the background anyway. YOU determine what runs in the background instead of your apps.
It doesn't work with system apps, these need to be moved to phone storage before Greenify can take control of them.
I've noticed a definite improvement in available memory and multitasking.

You will spend more battery in killing those apps. ram is supposed to be filled up, the only answer to run more apps is to get more ram , not kill running apps.
Did you read the post? It's not a traditional app killer. It prevents them from running in the background at all.
Installed this a few hours ago. Definitely smoother phone, and moderately better multitasking. Been trying to find a way to get rid of pesky Facebook which uses like 25 mb of RAM just to send you push notifications and sync your calendar.
You may need to convert Facebook to a user app first. It can't do anything to system apps. I did it with mine and it's now behaving.

Greenfly question

Hi all
Just downloaded greenfly on my none rooted nexus 5, seems to work fine however when I select my apps to hibernate then click the button to hibernate them all its ok, but if I go back on my phone and press hibernate again it always re does Facebook and Facebook messenger even if I have not opened them since.
It's like they have reopened themselves.
Any reason for this? It does not do it all the time just at random times.

you are new to android? apps open themselves is the norn, especially terribly written apps like facebook. its designed to open by itself and work in the background. if you kill it, itll just reopen. facebook creates wakelocks that will wake it whenever it wants. you dont like it? root your device, install the disable services app, block facebooks capabilities from constantly waking itself and your device. remembered, with linux, its considered that not used up ram is a waste of ram.
This is one of the reasons why I use the web broswer instead of the app.
Did you enable the service in accessibility?.
As above Apps will wake up the device, if the service is running it should do that automatically,

that's exactly why i only use the browser for facebook! well, that snd facebook seriously draining battery when i didnt open it for a month. its been 3 years since i uninstalled the facebook app. all my devices thank me for it, or for never installing facebook
All of the above! Terrible app. My wife has my Moto X now...nothing at all has changed setup wise, and she brought it from 6 to 7 hours screen time, to 4. All....because....of....Facebook.... App.
Terrible!
Thanks I might unistall it
It does suck that bad.

Just going back to this is there a good 3rd party Facebook app that is more battery friendly?
Yep I was on stock rooted for a while with Facebook installed I would get 2 hours sot but as soon as I removed it I got 4-5 hours of sot

Best battery back up rom suggestions please

I use like 150 apps installed in the phone.
Tried pie open beta(and also other custom roms) with kernels and other greenify apps but battery sticks with 5 to 6 screen on time.
I feel grateful if someone can help me getting the backup 7 or 7+.
I hear some guys are getting 8 and plus sot. I don't know how if everyone is using the same phone. I don't use phone for gaming. My usage involves with social media, YouTube, chats and 40 to 60 minutes using maps and gps.
Is it because of number of apps installed?
It's not about apps installed unless they keep the phone awake at all time, wish I don't think they do.
Unfortunately the best thing to do is just stop using social media lol.. Facebook and snapchat atleast.. Those apps are true battery killers.
If you feel like Facebook is really something you NEED in your life then skip the app and use the browser instead.
The other thing is making sure apps that you don't need notifications from is blocked from background usage in Battery, total usage, click the app you know you can block and select background usage, block
Last is managing the brightness, now there are times for full blast on the display and there is times for low light, don't let the screen blast your eyes if it's not needed to.

I agree... Facebook is a Hog. And they push you into using Facebook messenger as well... :-/
I use this... It's a pretty slick front-end for Facebook that uses little of the resources that the app does. It also let's you use messenger without installing it on mobile!

150 apps lol, how can you manage so much, I think just a simple browser can help you get rid of atleast 100 of them. I never understand the need of app which works on a site on a desktop. Just to keep track of your location and what you are searching online, these apps track you and kills your battery. Go smart, use no tracking browser like bromite and live the freedom.
Now for ROM part, I get the best battery with any OOS + elementalX kernel. None of the custom rom are better than OOS and yes don't forget to remove all Google apps and OnePlus apps, they track you.
Also install betterbatterystats to check what is killing your battery, I easily get upto 8 hrs. of sot if no pubg.
