Hi everybody, I just decided to switch to moto g..but I can't find where are kernel sources code, if it's possible to start to work with it..because a feature that I really need is DT2W or even sweep2wake, I find it very very useful.
Someone on this forum already contacted Motorola about the kernel sources and they will be releasing them soon I believe. The forum search box is your friend
I would like to see this feature also. It could be especially useful if the phone's power button proves to be one of it's weaknesses.
If you get the flip cover, opening / closing the cover will be the same as pressing the power button.

Gravity Screen On/Off (in the playstore) or any automation app (I use MacroDroid -again in the playstore) which can use the Proximity Sensor as a trigger can give easy Power Button free use of your Moto G - no root required for either option.
I've used both (I get more control with MacroDroid). I've got a third party folio/flip type case with no magnet. Phone sleeps when it's closed (with a short delay to avoid accidental triggering when in use), wakes when it opens and can also be woken with a quick hand wave over the sensor.

Everyone in this forum (well there are exceptions) and using HD2 have issues with hard buttons, including myself, while working my Proximity Screen Off app, I thought of a completely new way of navigation for HD2!! How about using combination of sensors??
1) Shake to go back to home
2) If proximity sensor blocked less than a second go Back
3) If proximity sensor blocked less than 2-3 seconds and more than 1 second trigger
menu.
4) If proximity sensor blocked more than 3 seconds launch search
Haven't started on this yet, I need to know if this community really needs an app like this. Also please share your ideas!!!
I think it would be awesome, especially to show off
Might cause problems if the screen accidentally comes on while in your pocket.
Otherwise I like the concept.
Seems like that could have a lot of flaws, because wat if the sensor get blocked by accident while navigating through traffic

Mmmm i dunno i think the seconds issue is a bit difficult bcz not everyone is able to guess how many seconds passed everytime
!
I guess that a navigation based on acceleration values and sensors is a good idea:
I mean say:
1) Shake to go back to home (<--- ur idea excellent)
2) If proximity sensor blocked then trigger menu
3) Positive or negative values of acceleration along Z (vertically) determines going up and down
4) Positive or negative values of acceleration along X (horizontally) determines navigating left or right
I don't know if that can be done and how It's just an idea
Thanks for your effort
I like the shake idea using the g sensor, but the proximity sensor isn't really in an area that is easily accessible with your finger
Sent from my HTC bravo using XDA App
mm... interesting idea
but i'm not sure it will be very useful though... for me
I've not had any problems with my hard keys so not sure that this would do it for me.
However I have always thought that albums (photo and music) should go through the pictures/album covers if your device was tilted to the left or right.
On second reading you're not talking about adding this feature to apps are you, just to have some new menu and home ideas!!
is it posible to use gesture on gsensor? like moving your handset in circle to "search", move your phone from right to left to go "back"?
honestly I think this would be impractical and a waste of time.
I like the idea of G Sensor doing things though, like maybe shake to launch an app or an address to map to or something like that.
If you can solve all the technicalities, I believe this would be awesome. I guess the software would have to have a value of:
Locked screen = normal proximity sensor
More than 5 seconds blocked plus angle = call = screen off
On the other hand, what about shake the phone and a bar with soft buttons comes up on the bottom of the screen covering the launcher and not the icons, shake or press a swipe the bar and the bar goes off.
Wish I knew programming.
What about shake phone to wake up?
Not unlock but just wake up as is this is the most used action which involves hardware keys.

so your phone is turning on in your pocket when you walk? not good
i'd say do it, but that way that blocking proximity for a tiny bit (very short, like just swype over with hand)) will bring up menu such as Vol +- (overlayed over any app) and it contains back, menu search etc...any block longer will be overlooked(so it's not doing if u sheild ur phone from sunlight or hide it in school(lol)
for waking up u can already use all buttons so shift them.
Nice idea.
I think gestures on screen with fingers are better.(if it's possible)
Like: Move with 2 fingers from right to left would be the same as a click on the "back button".
Edit:
Otherwise... i think there are some Apps who have some of these gestures... There might be problems.. :/
Please work on an app for this. That would be awesome. The proximity app is is so useful too
Or maybe just implement most used or just one or two functions like search, back, menu, etc.
Or even better let it be user defineable.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
Not a bad idea...it certainly would be in invention worthy of the name.
And it would also make our lovely HD2s super marvelous!!!!!.......atleast for showing off!!
App Button Savior has all of it. It is faster than using the proximity.
1. This would surely be usefull if you are in a car and must navigate through the menu/programm.
(button savior icons are too small for this if you are in a car)
usefull for back/forward/start programm like google voice etc etc.
2. Option automatic activate the app if the phone is hooked to micro usb.
Comming from an LG G2 phone..it is actually really hard to live a life without knock on function. (double tap to wake and turn off the screen). Is there any of the hardware that makes this impossible ? or could it be implemented in future ?
What is needed by the hardware for knockon to work ?
To switch off, it works with Xposed + Double Tap To Sleep 1.0. Do you look here.

agreed, although the fingerprint scanner works like a charm it would be better with knock on when you place the phone on the desk
Wake no.
You don't need xposed. Just use a third party launcher and get screen off and lock app. Bind double tap function to the app and you're set.
Just another alternative

my suggestion is for screen OFF on double tap, not screen ON (aka knock on). I don't feel like rooting too so I use the fingerprint sensor to wake my device (yes its a pain if I have it on the table and just wanna see the screen but what to do if i'm not going to root..)
and when i want to turn off the screen, i use that method previously mentioned. cant comment on rooting/xposed for knock on function as I have never tried it myself.

Bro I'm just using Buzz Launcher (the best launcher experience ever for me) ... it also has gesture control ... u can set setting double tap and action lock screen ... hope this helps ... but no double to on yet .....
Yup, Nova Launcher can do double tap to turn off the screen as well. No need to root. I don't think there are any solutions at this point to double tap to turn on the screen though.
Mate does have the overlay button tool called "suspend button" much like ios & has screen off 'suspend' function but it not something I find useful by many might like it.
App like screen off & lock may be useful for a solution to screen off.
It has shortcut/widget that could be used & also can replace the google now swype up function from home key which could be a solution for some if that function works on mate 7 UI !?
Was another app that has 3 & 2 finger screen touch gesture for screen off/lock .
Power on via tap is unlikely due to lack of development & issues with exposed.
Would of liked an option on the finger print reader to be a fast double/triple tap on option if finger print security not used.
Screen off is more important to me & few options do exist that may be satisfactory.
Is something that would of been nice added (selectable option) to the bottom virtual button bar by huawei as standard !
little things like that can make a big big difference in sales & customer happiness .
Hello all,
My N5 has its power button weared down. These last two days I wasnt able to turn it on because of the classic boot loop.
How can I prevent this?
I currently installed Gravity Screen to reduce power button usage to the minimum. I like how it unlocks my phone (movemente and proximity sensor work fine) but locking it doesnt seem very convenient as it doesnt support shakelock or double tap or gestures.
I'd like some app or ROM that enables me to lock my phone with a shake and unlocks it in the same fashion (or a double tap on the screen like the opo cellphone).
Are there any options?
Thanks
I have just a simple question to other users of this (otherwise nice) phone: I have the screen lock set up the standard way (no pin or anything), I also use the display doube-tap wake-up gesture (I found it quite useful for the phone with symmetrical front side). What happens is, that if I have my phone in the pocket, display facing the leg, the phone sometimes wakes up itself, runs some application or make a phone call to somebody from my quick dial list. If I position it facing outside of the pocket (which is quite insecure for the glass), it does not happen. The weird thing is, that if I switch off the double-tap feature, it does not solve the problem... The phone is with stock ROM 5.0.2-01003, no root (unfortunately). Does this happen also to anybody else, or just me?
P.S.: I wonder, why there's no such simple feature like "solid phone display lock" when the proximity sensor is covered... Possibly, somebody will implement it in a custom ROM (I hope ).
I don't have an elegant solution for you, but I'll pipe in that this has happened to me several times. I have a suspicion that the power button is being hit in the pocket- a problem which is not unique to this device.
I'm using Nova launcher with double-tap set to (PIN) lock the device, and this pretty much solves the problem, but does add extra hassle if you don't care about the security.
same happens to me on my 5.5 but i have gesture lock, so th ephone only start dialing in emergency dialer...only one solution is to insert the phone to the pocket with back cover facing the leg.
I use pattern lock but I was facing the same issues as the others (emergency dialing and camera activation). I've tried several apps from playstore and the best results are with Pocket Screen Lock (com.goldenpie.psl). The screen cannot be activated with the double tap nor with the power button when the proximity sensor is covered.
One other thing you are overlooking is to position the phone upside down in your pocket. Understandable not to have the glass facing outward, but you can put the phone in 'up-side down' and turn on reversible screen . That should prevent the power button from being inadvertently triggered in my experience.
I've had the same issue, but only with this one pair of jeans, so it probably depends on the cloth.
FYI, if you're rooted, the Gravitybox module for Xposed has a setting under Power Tweaks called "Proximity wake-up" which does exactly what you want in terms of preventing wake ups when the proximity sensor is covered. I've only just turned it on, but so far it seems to be working well.
Actually it seems that this has been fixed in the latest update for 6039. The display cannot be unlocked by the gesture anymore if the sensor is covered. All other apps have conflict with this (at least for me). Which in turn requires the power button to be explicitly pressed in order the display to be activated. Even if it's not in my pocket anymore.

Right you are on both counts. I'll test further before posting next time. Thanks for the correction.
So I bought a few cheap nfc tags from China and used one for the Smart Unlock. Since mxp doesn't have fingerprint sensor, I guess having a Skip alike thing would be the next best thing. Very easy to setup, just go to Security menu, Smart Unlock (you must have pin or pattern lock), add Trusted Devices, pick NFC then put the tag behind the phone. Give it a name and thats it. The only hassle with this unlocking method is you have to wake up the phone then only it will read the tag. Skip has a magnet built in that wakes up the phone automatically. Oh and another not so good thing is you have to lock the phone using the power button in order for the unlock to work. Whenever I lock using Nova's Screen Lock or Greenify's Hibernate and Lock, it just didn't work.
Update on diy skip. Now I no longer needs to press the power button to lock/unlock the phone. With root access, use Tasker and Secure Settings plugin to emulate power button press when display is off (run command - input keyevent 26). Then use Nova launcher's screen lock shortcut gesture (double tap, swipe up/down etc) to complete the process. I have a small magnet taped to the nfc tag, so when I slowly swipe from the side, the magnet wakes up the screen and then nfc takes over to unlock.

Motorola has a product called Skip which utilize the NFC chip to bypass the lockscreen. If you have been using some Moto phones, you should know that most of them has a magnetic sensor that is used for the docking (older Moto phones have dock accessories). The dock has a tiny magnet that when the phone detects it, it automatically turns the phone into a desk clock or navigation mode when attached to a car dock if I'm not mistaken. It seems that Moto maintains this sensor in newer phones, it is located at the back and in MXP case, somewhere in the center. If you have Skip, you attach it to your belt so when you pull the phone out from your pocket, all you need is a swipe on Skip and the phone is unlocked. I believe what happens is the phone detects the magnet, wakes up the phone (still locked) and then it detects the NFC tag inside Skip to unlock.
So I bought some NFC tags, got small magnet from my busted laptop hard disk, taped them together and attach it to my belt. If you don't have the magnet it is still possible to tap on the NFC tag to unlock but you have to enable Moto Display. When you pull your phone out, you'll see the clock, swipe down to get to the lockscreen (pin/pattern/password lock) and then tap on the tag to unlock.

Anyone else with experiences ? I was able to register the nfc tag but unlocking on the pattern lock screen didnt work. There was a sound when putting the nfc tag behind the device (so i guess somehow the nfc reader worked) but the unlock failed.
Maybe its only working if i have some special services switched on?

Usually the power button. Sometimes maybe because of the auto lock after some seconds (i set it to 30). I am not sure what you mean with shortcut app.

Our phone has a default app that detects the nfc chip, it's called Tags. I believe this app made the sound, if you're at the home screen (unlocked) and place the tag at the back of the phone you'll hear a sound and a popup message asking what to do even if you already registered the tag for smart unlock. I disabled this app to get rid of the sound and notification.
What I mean with the shortcut app is something like double tap to sleep or lock the phone. Greenify and Nova launcher app also has a shortcut to lock the screen. If you use this method to lock the phone, smart unlock won't work.

Can someone enlighten me why this is useful? I mean, if you have Tasker and root you can use Secure Settings to unlock by WLAN or location (in LP that is), and if you are going to literally stick the key on the back of the device, why even set a lock at all? I would understand if the tag was in your wallet or your jacket or on your desk, but literally on the device?
Who said about sticking the key on the back of the device?
Oh, the magnet is just to wake up the screen. I must have read over that too quickly.
I want to apologize. I was wrong about not working my nfc tags. I simply missed that pretty little detail: nearing the nfc tag while in lock screen. I always tried to unlock while beeing in the screen before the unlock screen.
So, everything is fine now. I am using a stylish nfc ring beeing very happy with it.
Update, 2.2.2016: No, not everything is fine. I came across a bug or intended feature. The lock functionality is disabled after some time not using the phone, according to this:
this is a lollipop behavior.
According to this, nephiel made a workaround for at least MM.
Here is the bug report for this issue.
Does anyone else use the nfc ring or another nfc tag for unlocking?
Regards.
