Question about undervolting - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
I'm using franco kernel and i'm trying to undervolting the cpu for battery life.
First I would like to know if undervolting is dangerous for the cpu.
In second, how can I find the best setting for me? Which test I have to do? My cpu is PVS 1. I'm using FKU with -50mv.

No it's not dangerous for the CPU, the device will become unstable and possibly randomly restart if the voltage is too low.
You can try the Antutu app which has a stability test

Thank you. If the "Antutu's stability test" fails , i get an error? Or simply i get the restart of device?
My cpu is PVS 1: realistically how much can I get off? I'm now at -50 mv without problems.

I'm using cataclysm and r14 right now. I'm undervolting -75. Last night I left my phone unplugged and drained 1% over 6 hours idle.

I use Cataclysm + r14 as well, but if I undervolt more than -25mV across the board, the phone would crash in antutu benchmark. (I'm sort of using antutu as a stress test)

Undervolt (mV) isn´t for battery life, it´s for low temperature. Underclock (MHz) is done for battery pourposes

Kernal voltages?

I'm sorry for the noob question but I really don't understand voltage terms and what's it for and how it work I was wandering if anyone could explain it to me?
In the past I would use set CPU and create a few profiles and would be done with it but I been reading on the forums about setting voltages higher and lower for better performance.
Currently i'm on eagles blood 2.3.5 ROM, trinity t15 (fun) kernel.
Any help would be much appreciated.

It's to save power and get better battery life. You lower the amount of power the chip gets at various clockspeeds until it starts not working correctly, then back up to a voltage at which the chip is stable at that clockspeed. Some chips can handle lower voltages than others while still working correctly.
Overclocking = get better performance
Undervolting = get better battery life
Both can lead to phone instability if you set the values to extremes.

It all depends on the kernel your using and if it supports UV, it should say if it does in the name of the kernel tho(just look for uv ) Setcpu 2.2.4 will allow you to change voltages only if your kernel/rom support it.
you can safely undervolt -50 -75 at most all the way up to 1.0ghz-1.1ghz i wouldn't undervolt past that.

So what your saying is I can use setcpu to change the voltage?I just recently changed kernels I saw that option available but I didn't understand how to use it.under voltages it shows all the GHz underneath it it shows 0.From here what do I do?, do I go too each GHz profile and -50 from all of it?

[Q] Have you managed to OC to 1460MHZ and keep stability?

I'm using AOSP+ ICS ROM with the latest Matr1x kernel. Whenever I try to OC to 1460 the phone freezes and I have to pull the battery, so I'm forced to run at a maximum of 1300MHz.
Also, on a related matter, is it good practice to use SetCPU with various profiles (battery<, temp>, screenoff, charging) for various frequencies? Or should I just use AOSP+ tweaks to chose a min and max frequency and let it be?

If you are using deep idle you shouldn't underclock since it causes a race-to-idle condition. In other words your battery will drain faster. If you don't use deep idle, feel free to underclock when the screen is off or whatever you want.

Just an update, Using CNA 1.4.0 and Matr1x v17, I am stable oc'ed to 1460.
this is what I am running
1)800/1460
2)gov =Ondemand
3)Scheduler =Noop
4)all voltages to +30 (used the cna rom's voltage tweaker)
I tried ShadowGun: the Leftover.. and It was flying. Of course, make sure that have enough battery or that you have a charger ready. But finally it works, try this and let me know
I can run it for 10-20 min of usage then get a freeze. I never raised the voltages before though. It seems like its working for other people. And the actual developer of Matrix Kernel is telling you to ....

It still amazes me how so many people that ask about overclocking have no frigging idea at all how cpus/gpus in general are binned etc.
I have a question. Why do you guys overclock that much? It might be snappy but battery life is just bad and it just doesn't worth it in my opinion.

Personally, I do it because I can. Seriously... I'm a geek, I love gadgets and tech and I like to tinker.
On the subject at hand, I'm still unable to OC to 1460 (ARM voltages +30, INT voltages +25) but at 1300 it runs fine, no issues whatsoever.
i can run 1460 stable all day. bigxie/matrix. just did +30 to all the voltages above 1000. deadline and lulzactive..
If you are a geek you would know about something as simple as binning chips. Do what a tech geek would do...look it up. Same thing the op should have done with his ?. Hell mathkid has a answer to his ? In the op of his kernel thread. Which is the kernel he is running

Overclocking

Hey guys will overclocking drain the battery quicker even with stock voltages?

Different voltages are specified as stock for different frequencies. As the frequency changes, the voltage does too. Running 1200mhz with the stock 1000mhz voltage will probably cause instability and crashing.

i haven't played with voltages yet but in my experience the benefits of overclocking are minimal anyway, and they make nexus reboot often and other bad things :/
With the right settings you can get a fully stable and functional overclock, but it is on a per-phone basis due to varying quality of the same CPU during manufacture.

Currently I'm using icup kernel speedy 5 clocked at 1.4 and its been extremely stable. So what your saying is that the voltages automatically increase when I select a higher frequency, because I did not change them manually.

Open NSTools and select Voltage tab. That's the list of "stock" voltages for each frequency.

A CPU governor such as on demand, lulzactive and lazy tells the CPU what clock to be at and automatically change. While reading, it will be at 100 or 200mhz, while playing a game it will be at the maximum clock you tell it to. Saves power this way.

yes, usually 1 GHz is enough , UV or OC also may reduce hardware's physical life

No problems for me. And performance governor means the phone stays at max frequency all the time. You should never use it for real usage just for testing.

Undervolting has zero to do with performance. The danger with undervolting is instability. If you undervolt too much, you'll crash because your CPU can't draw enough power to do an operation.
A certain CPU is able to do a certain amount of work in a given clock cycle, and that amount of work does not change in the slightest with voltage.
EDIT: Also, as JihadSquad said, performance keeps your CPU at 100% maximum clock speed at all times. It doesn't let it slow down. It is brutal on a battery for no real world gain.
Anyone notice when using smart ass governor it won't overclock to 1400 , it can over chick anything else but not 1400 for some reason so I have it at 1440

Lucky lucky piece of silicon right there. Mine can only get to 1400 and at 1440 it starts freezing sometimes, 1500 unusable.

Or unlucky. At SetCPU's default for 1500MHz, it's running +325mV (+27.7%) from stock. So it's either really good silicon or a contender for a replacement in a few months.

For one thing, you're running an EP4 kernel with a FP1 rom and radio. Install a FP1 kernel, either stock (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1582470) or PBJ (http://rootzwiki.com/topic/137-05-04-12peanutbutta-jelly-time/) and go from there.

I think I need to deal with the file system first. I have that discussion going in another thread.
Perhaps Odin back to stock and reapplying changes in order is in order.

Well 1500 crashed on me and 1440 was a little better but it also crashed

Did you wipe cache and dalvik. I like doing it before and after flashing kernel and rom.... don't forget to mount system, if that does not do it mount everything.... post the steps you have used before so we can better help you.

Try to fix permissions before leaving CWM. That has worked for some people trying to go back to stock.

Safe undervolting? What's your settings?

What undervolting have people got set with what set up that's still safe and stable... How low can you actually go on the nexus 5?
For example... I'm currently...
Rom: stock with some apps removed
Runtime: ART
User style: just phone and Internet browsing, no games really ever
Kernel: linaro version of franco's
Kernel Settings: stock min and max frequency - 61 vibration amp setting.
Undervolt: - 50 across the board

All undervolting is safe. Just not necessarily stable. Varies for everyone (and evey CPU is different) so not sure this thread will help you.

-50 is the best I can get without the phone freezing and rebooting.
I run at 975mV 2.2GHz, that's PVS3. Think that's pretty good.
