Google Glass... Should i do it? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know this is not about nexus 5.. but i own a nexus 5... so there!
I got my invite today, $1,500 and Glass can be mine.
I've been really intrigued by glass since it was announced.
I'm not a programmer but a tech. enthusiast who would really like to take advantage of some of the features of glass.
I like the idea of having the navigation on my heads up while driving, as well as seeing messages/emails etc.
So... what do you think... is it worth it, will it come down in price next year?
I can spend the $1500... but SHOULD I!?

It's your money. Seems like a waste to me.

I hear ya...
The part that most annoys me is that when this does come to market, it'll probably be around 300-700.
I really don't see spending $1500 making any sense... now if google were to say that for all the early adoptes they'd get a free upgrade to the device that reaches market... that would be worth it... but i doubt they'd do that. I'm sure the version that does go to market will be different that what is currently going out to explorers.
Meh... I thiknk i'll pass... hopefully in less than 6 months, google sells it retail and it's half the price.

If I wanted augmented reality I'd just spent $5 on a hit of LSD.

...figuratively, of course. I spent $600 on my One X. SIX. HUNDRED. DOLLARS. Cold hard cash. I also just spent $250 on a Nexus 7 tablet. How the hell does the One X cost more to manufacture than the Nexus 7? Take an international One X for example. Same Tegra 3 as the Nexus 7, same 16gb storage, same 1gb ram, no SD slot like the Nexus... the Nexus has a bigger battery, bigger screen, more actual material cost because well... it's bigger. Only thing the One X has that the Nexus doesn't is a camera and a cell radio. So a tiny camera chip and a cell radio add $300 more to the cost? Nuh uh, I don't think so. I always thought $600 was justifiable all things considered. I mean, the One X is a seriously powerful device and I don't mean spec-wise. You can do a TON of crap with it. But if Asus can sell a Nexus 7 for $250, then there is no way in hell $600 (okay $550 if you don't count tax) is a justifiable cost for the One X. Yeah I know the Nexus 7 is being pushed at practically cost but still, if they can sell it for that low and it still be financially justifiable, you'd think HTC would be able to push the HOX for less than what they are. Just my thoughts on the matter.
The Nexus 7 doesn't have a carrier behind it, raising the off-contract price to force us into a subsidized plan. Reminds me of the iPod Touch and the iPhone, which have almost the same guts, but the latter costs hundreds more.

An international One X is still $550-$600 with no carrier behind it.
I read somewhere that Google doesn't make any money on any Nex7 sales also, they sell it for what they make it for.

Google has reported zero profit will come from Nexus 7 (we'll see...) and wouldn't it cost more to create an HD screen that's smaller then one that's a bit larger? Because it has a higher rate of units not passing quality control because it's harder to pack the pixels closer together?
But I agree, overpriced in a sense, $400 would seem more logical. But hell, I paid full price anyway.
Tablet manufacturers seem to be in a race to the bottom, price wise. That hasn't really happened with phones yet, I guess because there's no overwhelming giant like the iPad in the phone market.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
They are both called Tegra 3 but they are NOT the same model. As far as I am aware the screen for our phones costs more even though its smaller (higher quality + fitting more in a small space). And though a larger screen might cost more, in general it actually costs more to make the same thing in a smaller package, not less. And as someone has already mentioned Google is probably not making a dime off the actual sale of the device itself, which HTC can't really do.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
Yeah I'm sure our screen costs more to manufacture than the 7" one, and yeah smaller things cost more from an engineering standpoint but it can't be THAT much more expensive. I still think all things considered, the cost of these phones is way too high.
its like when you have a baby, diapers costs a butload
I'm sure the One X costs anywhere from $200-$350 to manufacture, so I'm guessing they are making a pretty good (around 100%) profit. Makes sense to me.
Long live the One X
Google doesn't really care about making a profit with Nexus 7. All of their profit will come from things like Play Books, Play Movies, and it will greatly expand the use of their cloud services. Pretty much the exact same thing Amazon did with the Fire.
Google could be selling the Nexus 7 at a loss like B&N and Kindle do.

Thats how samsung is making the money.
You buy the phone for 200 or whatever, the carrier pays the rest, but you pay 100 bucks a month for service for 2 years!
So it makes sense! Unless you buy a phone every 6 months paying out full price, thats your problem -_-. The average person gets a new phone every 2 years. So they arnt getting raped, well except for the wireless plans.

Andy Rubin has stated that Google and Asus stand to make virtually no profit on the Nexus 7. Also, they planned to reduce costs by selling the majority of units straight from the Play Store. And Google is going to eat the cost of marketing all on their own. That's another big cost that needs to be taken into account, marketing.

This really doesn't have anything to do with OP's question.
The One X has extra components inside it, adding to the cost - the high quality camera, the cellular radio, the fact that the components are smaller, etc.
Also, HTC is in a strategy to actually turn a profit on their devices, whereas Google is just making a push for their content. People buy a Nexus 7, and then spend money on Books, Magazines, Shows, Movies, etc. and they recoup some of the money put into making the Nexus.

This.
While Apple continues to fight in the courtroom, Google continues to chase an increasing market share. This time, the focus is, in large part, on a tablet. There's a huge market there, and Google wants in.
Asus has been trying to get into Android, and had mediocre success. Nothing against their products, they just don't have a huge name like Moto, Samsung, LG, HTC, etc. Google's partnering with Asus here is quite strategic, IMO. Asus gets to showcase their work and craftsmanship, while Google gets to ensure a low price. Both cut profits to nothing to increase market share.
Very strategic and bold.

[Q] When/If To Buy

So here's the deal, i just recently graduated high school and am moving to the UK to continue my education. I have been looking into tablets for a while and have finally decided to get one to aid in that endeavor and i feel that the infinity tab is my best option.
Now my question is, should i buy one before i fly out on the 24th or july? or wait to buy one when i get there? could i even get it in time? or should i just wait for the nexus 10?
let me know what you guys think, thanks in advance.
Personally I would want a tablet for playing with while traveling
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
Buy before you leave. Good chance it will be more expensive in the UK.
Sent from my De-Sensed HTC Vivid using XDA Premium App
Where exactly are you moving from? If the US, it will almost certainly be significantly cheaper to buy here and not the UK. When you add in VAT/Duty/Etc, it will probably be hundreds of USD more expensive over there.
Buy in the US before you depart, but keep in mind that US supply will probably be tight. So you may wind up having to buy in the UK if you cannot source an Infinity regardless.
agreed
yeah i was thinking it would be cheaper here, plus i was hoping to load it up with movies for the plane ride.
so if i were to preorder it with somthing like next day or 2 day shipping, you guys think ill get it in time?

No one here is going to be able to answer that question with an accurate response.
They are scheduled to go on sale the WEEK OF July 16th. That could mean anything up until 7/22. But that is subject to change with no notice. And even if it does "go on sale" by 7/16, who knows when whatever retailer you pick will actually have them. Then they need to process them and ship them out, plus transit time.
Also, keep in mind that J&R just removed the Infinity from their website, you can't order it through them anymore. AFAIK, they were the only retailer in the US to have pre-orders. I assume that they maxed out their incoming inventory, so stopped taking more. So even if you wanted to buy it now, you would have to find another US store that has them.
All in all, I would say that if you need it by 7/24, you could probably get one in time. But unless someone here as some guaranteed insider information, you still better be crossing your fingers. Worst case scenario, you could always cancel your order if it doesn't look like it will meet the deadline to be shipped.
Yeah, i dont really want to risk it, will the nexus 7 get to me on time? im beggining to think i should buy the nexus 7 and then the nexus 10 when it comes out. itll add up to about the same price i think.

Nexus 4 move

I hope this is appropriate but was wondering if any of the Devs for this device plan on doing any work for the Nexus 4 ? I have been on the My Touch since the day it came out and have finally purchased me a new Nexus 4 and honestly It would be awesome to see some of your work over there as well.
My son is inheriting the My Touch 4g so I will not be completely leaving but something honest feels strange about moving on from this phone. Don't get me wrong I am way excited about the Nexus 4 experience though
Thank you all again for everything you have brought to the My Touch World!!!
The N4 has tons of developers. No need to bring some from a device that should have been dead a year ago.
I am not sure I understand what your saying ? My Touch should have been dead a year ago so there's no point in adding a Nexus 4 as a phone that a DEV would build for ? I would think a lot of DEVS write for more than one phone anyway?
i would like to get a nexus 4, i really want a new phone but i dont earn enought to just buy it...
Enjoy N4 when u move on give it to me

NO! The mt4g is going to live on! Do you realize that right now the mt4g has a more recent version (the most recent one, 4.2.2)of android through custom rooms than MOST new phones? HOW BOUT THAT?! The mytouch 4g is never going to die. There is a lot of love for this oldie, and people really like the hardware. Jelly bean actually runs faster than gingerbread on my particular device! Not only that, but its actually a popular phone. You can still see many people walking around with a mt4g.

There is always a newer, more powerful phone right around the corner. Quite frankly a LOT of people are sick to death of HTC's locked down bootloaders, HTC Dev, and slow updates. While the Nexus 4 is simple, it's quite literally made for nerds. Unlocking the bootloader is as simple as a single fastboot command. From there it's gravy. To each his own, though. The beauty of Android is choice.

The Nexus 4 is a "QUALITY" device.
The price is low b/c Google sells their devices at prices close to how much it costs to make the device. The phone is actually more expensive at other retailers than the $299 8gb model you saw on Google Play. The phone is $599 if you buy it from Best Buy for example.
As far as "you get what you pay for", that can be interpreted to be negative for something "cheap" and something "expensive"
For example: Buying a crappy 10in, off-brand no name Android tablet w/ an 800x480 resolution and a dual core 1ghz processor for maybe $79.99
Second example: Buying an apple product. Nuff said.
But while we're talking about apple, I should mention that the iPhone 5 costs apple roughly ~$200 to make. Let that soak in.

Since your therory is that the Nexus 4 is so much more valuable than $299.00. I have a great ideal for you.
Buy 100 of them at $299 with tax and shipping the final price should be around $350 per phone. Total price= $35000.00
List them on Ebay for 599.00 plus free shipping and no taxes Total sales would be $59900.00 - $6000 for shipping and fees Grand Total Sales =53900.00
Your profit would be $18,900.00 How could you turn down that much easy money? Hell if you can't do a 100. Do 5 that would be almost a $1000.00 profit
Some how I don't think your theroy would work. I just seen a brand new in the box on a buy it now for $325.00 shipping included.
A value of an object is what market will bear. Nothing else. The reason Google is selling them so cheap is they found one of the cheapest manufacturers to make them. Do you actually think that they would be selling at $299 if Samsung or Htc made them?
Nothing to learn here other than a Nexus 4 is worth about $299.00. In a few months $150.00

You are completely fixating on an irrelevant point. All he is saying is just because it is priced competitively, doesn't mean its a low quality device. You need to understand that you can't judge the quality of a device by the markup a cell phone carrier may make. For example, T-Mobile charges 413 dollars for a Galaxy S2, no way in hell that STILL costs that much to build a plastic phone, but, by your logic, the build quality would be better and it would be a WAY better phone. See what i am getting at? Don't go around trying to be argumentative and douchey, i saw your post on the B.S. thread. Take it down a notch.

All phones have issues. HTC can definitely attest to that. Never seen one of theirs that didn't. There is no perfect phone.
My N4 hasn't cracked because I keep a bumper on it and my back isn't scratched because I keep a clear protector on it. The phone still looks amazing. Problem solved. By the way, I work outside, every weekday, regardless of the weather. I have zero issues with the quality of the build of this device and I have it in my hand every day. I also came from a myTouch 4G, so I know what solid build quality feels like.

Looking for the best BUDGET tablet

I want the BEST deal possible
I want the most bang for my buck
perhaps an up and coming release
or the most popular tablet already available.
I have nothing but time and the first tablet i bought was an ipad and it was super cheap due to an amazing deal.
I've done a lot of research of my own and this is my final step, I'm hoping the -always smart- people on here can help a brother out.

Nexus 7 by a billion gazillion miles. 1080p screen, serviceable dual cameras, immediate updates, quad core GPU, stereo speakers.
Or maybe the N10? The new one isn't here yet, so you should prolly wait a little.
Currently, nobody can beat Apple at tablets, though. Just my opinion. Seems there are more apps that are optimized for the large screen.

lol i was JUST watching this
http://cnettv.cnet.com/8301-13484_5...efight-google-new-nexus-7-vs-apple-ipad-mini/
thanx to this video -that comes off fairly biased- Ive been doing more and more research on the nexus.
my problem with the nexus is it`s date. technology is always being updated and I would be choked if a month passed and the next best thing gets released.

For $230, you can't expect something like that to be future-proofed. What you could do is sell your old device in an emerging market, where the demand is high and supply low, and use that extra cash to upgrade frequently. But the N7 def has more to it than just the hardware. It is as close as you can get to the stock experience, so there is very little lag. And there is longer support by Google. It gets a lot of dev attention. It is also very cheap.
Seriously, if you want a good deal, the N7 is the way to go.

You could wait for the Nexus 10. But yeah, there really isn't much selection as far as budget Android tablets (or any Android tablets) go.

Uhhh... you may want to think this through. While you do have a limited return period, it is best to read a good amount before investing in anything. Unless you have money to burn...

well technically i decided about 3 hours ago and have been doing none stop research. Everyones telling me nexus, i'm loving everything about nexus. 200+ dollars doesn't break the bank and i cannot find anything better.
I normally do tons of research, but i think this is an easy call right here.
took me litterely 2 months to pic out my ms g60 gaming laptop
however i was in china atm, so i probably could of chosen better, but in china that was an amazing deal.

Why wont google make a better phone?

why are they shooting for cheap?? why not price it at 500-600 dollars but make it a quality phone?? show the world what they are capable of.

Price at £500, get x sales
Price at £300, get 2x sales + recognition as a reasonably pricing company, with a quality product, and a lot more factors.
It's business. That's why.
Why post this question? This is another useless thread.
Honestly the nexus 5's quality is on par with some of the higher end smartphones available right now. Admittingly the speakers and camera are not the best, but other than that it's a good phone. There's really no reason for most companies to jack up the price of their phones to $500-600. Just because it costs that much doesn't mean it's quality. If you look at how much it costs to build a nexus phone, vs a leading high end smartphone, you'll see there's not a lot of difference.
They want to put this phone in as many hands as they can. What do you think they make all that money from?
What do you mean? Google is barely charging a mark up. That's why its cheap. Not because they're using. Cheap parts

its not useless, i just want to see what other people think. if you disagree, then tell me why you prefer just the cheap version.
Thanks.

I think you're the only one here who believes this phone is cheap. Again as stated before, Google does not mark up their devices very much, thus creating a more affordable price. Samsung, HTC, Apple, everyone else will mark theirs up a lot more, but they also do this to pay the middle man (warehouses, retail stores, etc). Google sells their own hardware on their own website, so they're cutting out a lot of the middle men, thus keeping prices down.

i guess my expectations where just very high, and all we got was a mediocre phone that competes with early this year devices, gs4 and htc one etc...
Seems like people are really stuck on stats and fluff.
So if the N5 had aluminum, would that make it "premium"?
Does it need a 42MP camera, with 3.5GHz 8 core CPU, 4GB RAM, 4K display and 128GB ROM?
Why not make a smart phone that is truly smart, doesn't need bleeding edge stats to run AND be affordable. Oh, that's right Google has already done that with the Moto X and now N5.

You have had 15 phones in the past 39 months (a phone change every 2.6 months). I don't see why this is a big deal for you. If they did make a 'better phone' there would be an even better one released a couple months later. They are building a brand...normal people are starting to understand what a Nexus device is (and most can afford one). To put a whole new chipset in a phone requires substantially more money and carries more chances of bugs. Google is starting to influence hardware chip designs with Android's features and I am sure they have a plan to release a feature complete phone that is better than everything else in due time.
Stop complaining and enjoy your new toy.
Then the OEMS have no reason to complete other than custom skins. Like Microsoft and windows 8 tablet and phones

Sell it and buy yourself an Iphone 5S, you haven't tried that yet. Maybe that will satisfy your high expectations. :fingers-crossed:

Also agree pointless thread.

The Nexus `s are meant to serve as an example and showcase for other oem`s regarding how software should be like. That aside the Nexus 5 hardware is very very good compared to the price you pay
Can't wait till all the love or hate threads die down.
