[Q] forgotten pattern unlock - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Have tried 50 times and I don't get a "forgot pattern" button! Any ideas? I have my google credentials and my pin just forgot the damn pattern...I'm rooted etc would rather the phone just ask me my password...[i.e. not looking for ADB hacks]

It can't just ask you a password. If you don't know the pattern then flash the factory image in fastboot and start over. You're probably going to lose everything on the phone because I bet the bootloader is locked too

Its supposed to ask for your google credentials:

Can't unlock your Android device
If you’ve made too many pattern attempts or forgotten your PIN or password, you can try other methods to unlock your Android device.
Sign in to your Google Account
For pattern passcodes only
If you set up a pattern passcode and made multiple attempts to unlock your device, you can touch Forgot Pattern and be prompted to enter your Google Account username and password. This will take you to the Security options in the main Settings menu, where you can reset your device’s password.

Anyways, tried Android Device Manager and it works great, just choose LOCK and you can enter a new pin. But definately a bug as it should ask you as their own FAQ says...
And my bootloader is unlocked but hey, as I said I preferred not to delete stuff with ADB if I could avoid it.

That page appears to not apply to the Nexus 5, it's not in the list for factory reset.

The OP probably just stole the Nexus 5 from some hapless idiot and you guys are falling over yourselves trying to help him access it.

the OP (me) just happened to set pattern lock to try it out after using the same pin for years on every phone I have had, and promptly forgot it.
And I specifically said I was not looking for ADB commands to unlock it, which are freely available already...
Google doesn't have a Nexus 5 help page, they just have a Nexus devices help page. If the 'Forgot Pattern' button doesn't apply to a Nexus 5 they should say so...
And as I said in my second post I was able to unlock the phone using Device Manager (well, to set it back to pin unlock anyways, which then let me unlock it).
But let me sum up...
tl;dr

[Q] Please help samsung galaxy 5 i5500

Hi I'm having a problem with Galaxy 5 i5500 i have entered a pattern [the one wich you use to see the home screen] and i forgot it. now i entered the pattern wrong too many times and my phone is locked and asks me to enter a google account. i havent set up a google account in my samsung so i can't access it. can anyone help me if they could tell me how to reset it or factory reset it? i have tried the secret codes and they don't work.
Why is it that 90% of the time, the first thing people do when they get a phone or tablet is put in a password (same with laptops and desktops). While I'm at it, why in the blue hell do people always hide the password on the unlock screen when making vids on youtube? YEAH
ANYWAY, google is your friend bro. You should be able to boot the phone in recovery mode (someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that because I'm not 100% on it) and do a factory reset. I'm not going to take the time to google it or search XDA on how to do it for you though. I learned how to walk because my parents refused to carry me around for the rest of my life....just sayin

[Q] Locked out of tablet...

I used the Unlock with Wifi app happily with pattern login for months and while browsing through the settings one day successfully enabled the device admin mode login.
Maybe I'm a tinker, or just a masochist...
This meant I had to change my good ol' trusty pattern to a fancy (annoying-to-type) pin. After a few short uses and over a couple days, I disabled the app from within the app's home screen because I didn't notice any kind of difference from the non pin-typing days. Since I was forced to change to the typed pin to enable admin mode, I changed from typed pin back to my pattern pin and enjoyed life. It all went down hill when I re-enabled the app from its home page and turned on my Xoom to a screen asking for a typed pin. Either I don't remember it, or its not being accepted, but I can't unlock the device. I thought it would be like other Android OS' that ask you to login with your Google account to reset the login, but I''ve now done it 50 times and it just give me a message that's keeping count for me.
Is there a way to fix this without wiping? I've contacted the developer and am waiting for his advice...

Yes and yes but usb debugging was off so I couldn't connect. I ended up wiping it. Chalk this up to the lesson learned pile...

I've done nandroids from the past, but at this point I dont feel I lost anything of real value, most of the things that would be replaced were settings and screen layout which would be nice to get back, but this way it'll force me to re-evaluate as I rebuild to see if what I had was still the best...
reset factory via recovery mode... and question how to get recovery mode... turn off your phone and press power+volume up if your phone samsung press power+vol + and home button and choiche factory reset... wait a few minutes and choce reebot....

[Completed] [q] unlocking locked s4 password not working!!!!!

I have a Galaxy s4. My 4 year old was playing with it yesterday and it is now locked. I had a swipe protection on it and he did it so many times that it went to 'enter a pin code". I have NO idea what the pin code is! So I spoke with Verizon and Samsung and they gave me different generic codes to use and none of which worked. So they told me to use google device manager. I was able to locate the phone. It rang when I hit ring. So they told me to lock it. I typed in a new password and confirmed it. My screen lit up with a lock screen. I entered the password and it said "entered unsuccessfully". I tried using a password with a cap...then we tried with just numbers...then we tried with just letters and no caps... nothing worked. and now the pin code screen is not coming up. Just the locked by device manager is.
We took the SIM card out and it still rang and we tried a new password and that didn't work.
I have no idea what I am missing. I don't want to have to reset because I will loose over half of my contacts and word docs and pics. (I don't use backup and I don't have an SD card)
Thank you for any help anyone can offer!!!!!!
Hi
Thanks for writing to us at XDA Assist. It sounds to me like you need a PUK code? Your carrier wasn't able to provide you with one?

Can't unlock device!!

Hi guys, I created this account just for this question so I hope I'm posting in the right section!
On to the problem, I have a SM-G920I S6 that I have locked with my fingerprints. I set my backup password to my gmail one so it would be easy to remember. This morning I went to unlock my phone and the scanner didn't recognise my finger 3 times(happens sometimes as we all know). It asked me for the backup password which I entered and it told me was wrong (3? times). It then asked for my google email and password which it also says is wrong!
I haven't set up the 'Find my mobile' thing yet (idiot) so I can't remotely unlock it. I tried logging in and out of youtube on my pc and that works fine but now I can't access the verification code message because there are multiple messages/texts (on my phone) at this point *sigh* - but it demonstrates that my password is working at least!
I guess the last thing I can do is wipe the phone? but I obviously don't want to do that...
I also only just recently changed my password and enabled 2-step verification (before buying the phone though so that shouldn't break it???) if that helps.
Thanks guys!
Hi again guys, I just want to announce that my phone has magically let me in with the password I've tried dozens of times!
I'm not sure how to delete/end a thread so I just wanted to post a conclusion. Sorry if I haven't done the right thing.

Pin locked; TWRP flashing not allowed in locked state; need to recover data

Hello - I have a rather unique situation and have been searching for possible solutions since last few days. I have forgotten my pin or potentially an update or my office apps have locked my phone. I have it connected using fastboot to my PC however I am not able to flash TWRP as it gives an error: Flashing not allowed in Lock State. Is there any way for me to back up the data before doing a reset? Is there any code which can be used to bruteforce different pin combinations in recovery mode / fastboot mode? Any help is greatly appreciated. I have the output of "fastboot getvar all" in case that can help you locate the partition to boot/erase. thanks a ton!

In what way are you phone locked? I don't think there are anything you can do to save your data if you don't know your password/pin. TWRP wouldn't have helped in this case either.
Hi - thanks for your reply. My pin is not working and every pin trial is taking quite a bit of time. I am able to try pins quickly in recovery mode but trying all possible 4 digit combinations will take quite a bit of time. Alternatively, a brute force code to keep trying different pins would also be beneficial if you are aware of it.
Wont adb would have let me back up my phone data?
No way to bruteforce it that I am aware off.
your pin is needed to decrypt the encryption key that is used to decrypt data. So you can't access or backup any data without your pin. This is by design.
But cant the encryption key be overwritten using my biometrics which I have registered as well? Or something that manufacturer can do because there are tonnes of solutions for samsung and lg devices but am struggling to find something for oneplus..

Perhaps this is because OnePlus has properly secured their devices and Samsung/LG hasn't? Though I do contest that statement. By my knowledge all devices perform a data wipe when the bootloader is unlocked (aside from one OP device that had a flaw in this area IIRC).
Please view this from another perspective: if your device was stolen and you've PIN protected it, would you want the thief to be able to unlock it and view all your pictures/videos/documents/etc?

I agree but one pin cant and should not be the only way to unlock phone. In my particular case, I have now started to think that some of the app has messed up with the pin or an android update has messed up with the pin. I am quite surprised that a forgot pin / pattern option doesnt even come as if no one can forget pin. Is there a way to hack into my phone given I am logged into same gmail and other apps as I am logged into my new realme phone?

First time I've heard of a failing PIN, let alone an app that would mess with it (which is absolutely impossible). Asking for a hack into your phone is asking for an illegal way to access your device, which crosses a boundary we will not get into on this platform. We tweak devices, we add functionality, we use exploits to alter the aesthetics of a device and we surely mess them up a lot but we will not support anything beyond our terms.
But! If there indeed is an issue with the OnePlus 8T PIN security, I hope people will report it here. AFAIK there is no such issue widely known.
I also hope it's a lesson in creating proper backups. I guess learning the hard way is the best way. I think we've all been there. I sure have!
you could reset it and enter email registered with that device they fix or email you code to fix
