[Q] Locked out of tablet... - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I used the Unlock with Wifi app happily with pattern login for months and while browsing through the settings one day successfully enabled the device admin mode login.
Maybe I'm a tinker, or just a masochist...
This meant I had to change my good ol' trusty pattern to a fancy (annoying-to-type) pin. After a few short uses and over a couple days, I disabled the app from within the app's home screen because I didn't notice any kind of difference from the non pin-typing days. Since I was forced to change to the typed pin to enable admin mode, I changed from typed pin back to my pattern pin and enjoyed life. It all went down hill when I re-enabled the app from its home page and turned on my Xoom to a screen asking for a typed pin. Either I don't remember it, or its not being accepted, but I can't unlock the device. I thought it would be like other Android OS' that ask you to login with your Google account to reset the login, but I''ve now done it 50 times and it just give me a message that's keeping count for me.
Is there a way to fix this without wiping? I've contacted the developer and am waiting for his advice...

I saw a article a little while back somewhere in xda about being able to unlock the device if usb debugging was enabled

Yes and yes but usb debugging was off so I couldn't connect. I ended up wiping it. Chalk this up to the lesson learned pile...

I've done nandroids from the past, but at this point I dont feel I lost anything of real value, most of the things that would be replaced were settings and screen layout which would be nice to get back, but this way it'll force me to re-evaluate as I rebuild to see if what I had was still the best...

reset factory via recovery mode... and question how to get recovery mode... turn off your phone and press power+volume up if your phone samsung press power+vol + and home button and choiche factory reset... wait a few minutes and choce reebot....

WM6.1 - I'm asked for a password, but I don't have one!

Hello.
I recently got a Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 (with Windows Mobile 6.1), and I set a password on it.
Sometimes when it would ask me for my password, the shift or fn keys wouldn't work, so I couldn't enter it. I would have to soft reset the device to be able to type in my password.
Frustrated, I decided to disable password protection entirely. I then found that after leaving the device alone for a period of time (while sleeping, for example), it would lock and ask me for a password - but since I no longer had one, I couldn't. I would have to soft reset the device to bypass the password screen.
I searched around, and found that this was a bug in Windows Mobile, and the only solution was to hard reset and never enable password protection. After a while of putting up with it, I flashed my device to use itje's Touch-IT v7, and I performed a hard reset. It was fine for a while, but now it's doing it again: it's asking me for a password when I leave it alone for a period of time, but I don't have one. I never set a password this time.
Is there any real solution to this? It's incredibly frustrating. Thank you in advance.
you mean the security password that is enforced when using exchange email? there is ap app that will enable you to turn it off, but you should read this thread (the app is listed here but you should take heed of the warning from deedee). I leave it up to you.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=358695
Try "hard reseting" it
I'm not using Exchange email, and the checkbox to disable password protection isn't greyed out (like it is in that thread). Thanks for the link anyway though, I'll have a look around the registry.
Anyone else know anything about this?
Edit: As I said in my original post, I already tried a hard reset when this problem originally appeared. I hadn't touched the password protection settings at all since my hard reset, but it's happening again.
Does nobody have a solution for this?
are you sure someone isn't messing with your phone and setting a password? I've been using windows mobile for 6 years and never had that problem.
And you said something about a bug.... can you link me to whatever you found?
Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.
I just tried searching for that again, but unfortunately I can't find it. It was a thread with somebody saying that they have no password set, yet the device asks for one so they can only bypass the screen by soft resetting - and that's the exact problem I'm having now. There was no solution posted so I didn't bookmark it or anything.
I am the only person that has had access to my phone, so nobody has messed with it. The password setting is definitely disabled, and the HKLM\Security\Policies\Policies\00001023 registry value is set to 1 (disabled). My phone doesn't ask me for a password when I first start it (so I can get past it each time via a soft reset), it just seems to happen after 10 hours or so - I'm not exactly sure what triggers it.
Edit: I'm not sure if this is what I read before, but it seems to describe the same thing.

Thats the question: is it really time for WM6?
So far i believe that the device cannot digest what we have so far of WM6. Too many non-functional things or bugs if you would like to say =_=
Device auto-locks and asks for password and if you dont have a password you cannot get into the device other than by soft reset. Asks password even for activesync! PDAViet has problem with activesync in vista as it disconnects after 5 minutes. WiFi only turns on from Comm center. Hang up's on 25MB free RAM. A lot of memory leak! 10MB to run SPB Time -_-...

This is really wierd, i have been using wm since 5 was on the scene and ive never come across your issue. I appreciate that your not using exchange but did you try the zeynee unlock app? It might stop the lock screen, you never know. If it doesnt work then nothing lost huh??
I didn't try it, no. I was concerned about the posts saying the application used up too much battery power, and thought checking the registry would be good enough (since nothing should be changing the value). I'll install it now and see if the problem still occurs. I don't have much hope that this will help though.
Okay, it just happened again. The application didn't help.
Ok, worth a try...
Have yoyu considered flashing to a different rom to see if this works? Is there a new stock Rom available?
Ill have to look more into this, maybe msdn has something on it.
Well, I had this problem with both my original Vodafone ROM and the custom one I'm using now. I'm reluctant to flash it again due to the hassle of reinstalling everything again.
I think it may be related to notifications. It just happened again as I got a text message, and last time it happened just before I received a Skype call. When I'm away and come back to find it locked, there tends to be a new icon in the notification area. It definitely doesn't happen every time I get a notification though...

[Q] Password Locked Android Phone

Hey,
I know this looks extremely dodgy, but I am doing this for a friend (not that that makes it sound any better either).
Basically, someone nicked my friends phone and placed a password on it, I have no idea how long it is since this person is a complete so and so. Is there anyway I can hack into it and unlock the phone. Say, like an ADB code i can run from my computer? Its an huawei (sp?) U8510 running Android 2.3.x Unrooted
BONUS QUESTION: Anyway i could go about rooting this model?
Thanks,
Vol down button and power button factory restore and just go to forum and look for aio.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
Thanks, but isnt there some kind of way i can do this without losing the data?
Is the phone rooted? Flashing a newer version of the ROM might help, but always back up data first.
No, its not rooted yet.
if its completely stock, only way to remove the password without going through settings is a hard reset by holding volume UP and power until you get into bootloader. This process will restore it to factory settings and everything on the phone will be lost.
The manufacturer or phone carrier may be able to unlock it if you provide acct info and proof of ownership. I'd try that before resetting it to stock.
Screen lock? If your has Google account on it, enter "wrong" password 5 times and you see forgot password button.
Edit: it works only with patterns.

Nah its an actual password. He found out the password today. I'm extremely surprised there's no brute force hacker (software, not manually) you could apply to it

2°) location and securite
3°) define lock
4°) passeword

[Q] forgotten pattern unlock

Have tried 50 times and I don't get a "forgot pattern" button! Any ideas? I have my google credentials and my pin just forgot the damn pattern...I'm rooted etc would rather the phone just ask me my password...[i.e. not looking for ADB hacks]
It can't just ask you a password. If you don't know the pattern then flash the factory image in fastboot and start over. You're probably going to lose everything on the phone because I bet the bootloader is locked too
Its supposed to ask for your google credentials:
From https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/3388218?hl=en&ref_topic=3415522
_________________________________________________________________________
Can't unlock your Android device
If you’ve made too many pattern attempts or forgotten your PIN or password, you can try other methods to unlock your Android device.
Sign in to your Google Account
For pattern passcodes only
If you set up a pattern passcode and made multiple attempts to unlock your device, you can touch Forgot Pattern and be prompted to enter your Google Account username and password. This will take you to the Security options in the main Settings menu, where you can reset your device’s password.
________________________________________________________________________
Anyways, tried Android Device Manager and it works great, just choose LOCK and you can enter a new pin. But definately a bug as it should ask you as their own FAQ says...
And my bootloader is unlocked but hey, as I said I preferred not to delete stuff with ADB if I could avoid it.

the OP (me) just happened to set pattern lock to try it out after using the same pin for years on every phone I have had, and promptly forgot it.
And I specifically said I was not looking for ADB commands to unlock it, which are freely available already...
Google doesn't have a Nexus 5 help page, they just have a Nexus devices help page. If the 'Forgot Pattern' button doesn't apply to a Nexus 5 they should say so...
And as I said in my second post I was able to unlock the phone using Device Manager (well, to set it back to pin unlock anyways, which then let me unlock it).
But let me sum up...
tl;dr

[Q] Data Wipe After 10 Failed Attempts

As you may know, if you are using a secured lock screen and you enter the password/code/pin incorrectly 10 times in a row, it automatically wipes all data.
As I'm "new", I can't post a link to it, but Phandroid wrote an article on this (and made a video doing it)
I'm looking for a way to disable this.
I rooted using jcase's method. Any ideas?

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Give it to your kid to play with, only to get it back all fresh and wiped... Thank god I don't have kids!
This annoyed the crap out of me. I travel constantly with my phone and if it gets wiped during travel (and losing pictures and documents), that would equal me being fired from my job. My companies exchange server enforces security, which is good. On other devices, I can simply turn off this absolutely retarded option.
I had the same problem on the HTC M7. Luckily it can be disabled with root.
Anyway, once we get a proper root, you can set the failed attempts = 0 in an system xml file and then you will be good to go.
EDIT:
Edit this file:
/system/customize/ACC/default.xml
change this:
Code:

10

to this
Code:

0

Reboot and its disabled.

It isn't a retarded option if you're primary concern is data security. For some it's better to wipe the data clean than have it stolen by an attacker. Unfortunately the people who want this option are in the minority. There should be a toggle for everyone else who would rather keep the device from self destructing.

I believe this can be done with the temp root method. I was able to enable writing to the external sd card by modifying the /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml file. I'm guessing it will persist until a hard reboot. I might try to edit the default.xml later.Big fail.

Don't defend this "feature". Its undefendable. Its a completely retarded option if you can't turn it off. You have no idea how much it worries me when I travel that I could have my device wiped due to 10 in correct entries; I am currently traveling with a company iPhone, because I am that paranoid of it wiping on me. This little "feature" has completely ruined this device for me. Completely and utterly. I would call that a retarded option.
As for data security, I enable encryption and use a strong password. I also have remote wipe options. This feature should be an optional feature, not a mandatory feature. If I'm such a minority, why does no other phone OS mandates this? Not iOS, WP8, blackberry, or even stock android. I've used many phones. Only recent HTC's have mandated this. The HTC One with original 4.2 firmware didn't mandate it.
This feature is completely retarded. Period. End of discussion. BTW, not trying to be mean-spirited or anything, but its just such a dumb move on HTC's part.
With temp root, I might be able to change it, but don't you need a reboot to complete any changes to the system xml?
EDIT:
So I attempted to change it, but the changes didn't stick. Tried a second time, but the phone crashed and rebooted on me.

While the feature should be a user option, it is a good feature for those that need that type of security. As I said before, those are the minority. Most of us are happy with the security you mentioned and would rather the device did not self destruct, myself included.
FYI for anyone using a pattern, it seems you have to touch four dots before it considers it an attempt. I was able to touch any combination of 3 or less dots without lowering the counter.

Current state of the exploit doesn't allow any changes to /system. Anything that looks like it got changed, really didn't, and even if it seems like it's working now, will revert upon your next reboot.

This is one of my biggest annoyances with HTC's lock screen. Give me an option to just have a pattern lock. the wiping should be a check box.
why it isn't an option I just don't know. Sure it should be a feature, it shouldn't be a forced one though.
Check out the new app called "nine" its an exchange mail client. You can apply the security settings to the app rather than the phone and also set it to wipe the email account rather than the phone if you reach the max failed attempts.
The client is actually the best i've found yet for email...great interface and options with a two week trial

That is irrelevent for this discussion, exchange can only force a screen lock. HTC has baked in the 10 failure self destruct on any screen lock whether forced by exchange or simply turned on by the user.

negative ghostrider. I've tested it personally and the exchange securities are only applied to the app itself...not the phone. The exchange account is not even a device administrator which it would need to be to set the lock screen as well as wipe the device.

Ummm, afirmative ghostrider. HTC baked in the 10 time and wipe. regardless if I push a lock screen from my exchange security policies or not, if I turn on the pattern lock or other lock screen it will wipe after 10 times.
Just because you have a specific app that doesn't allow the exchange service to be admin doesn't change the fact that the 10 time wipe IS indeed baked into the lock screen.
I must be the only paranoia type on XDA, since no one has any idea about this, this is surprising...
I run my own Exchange server, and I voluntarily turn these policies on the moment I connect my account with my Android phone (in addition to device encryption).
The policy IS also configurable if you connect via Exchange. By doing so, you delegate it as a device administrator to your phone. Check in "device administrator" settings under the security and see if there are one or more enabled, and see if you can disable the one you're annoyed with.
Seriously though it's not that terrible. I have my phone to self destruct after 5 attempts. My company issued Blackberry has it trigger after 6. The more times you get it wrong, it keeps warning you, and eventually it will actually make you do stuff like type words in to ensure you aren't fat fingering your phone in your pants to give you another unlock attempt. If your company has the audacity that they will fire you because the phone was wiped and you can't read your correspondence, show them the figurative finger and demand a company issued device.
Technically I don't own an M8 phone yet since I'm waiting for the S-OFF before I buy, but I still have a mutated version of Sense running on my Rezound...so this should match up with what you're seeing.

PIN+Swiftkey= locked+Floating Toucher=overiding security=weirdest xperience

hi
yesterday i had faced very weird problem with nexus 5 (rooted with CF-Auto root).. it got locked on me.
What happened was i installed swiftkey on my nexus 5. I had to go out and battery was low so I turned off mobile data and kept it for charging. I dont really lock my nexus when I am at home but whenever I go out I set up PIN for security and its been the same 4 digits number since my first android cell. So this time I went into settings=>Security and set it up. The only change was that instead of usual keyboard, swiftkey opened. So I inserted the number twice.. Nothing weird so far.. right ?...
Well, what happened after that was weird.. I couldnt unlock my nexus. No matter how many time I tried I couldnt unlock it. I can swear that I inserted my usual PIN but it wouldnt unlock. Then I started panicking. After few unsuccessful attempts the usual prompt came so I waited 30 secs and tried again. But no avail. So there was no option but to recover password via gmail, right ? well I wasnt that lucky.. I tried wrong pin for more than 50 times but "forgot password" prompt wouldnt come. (i hadnt taken nandroid backup for last 2 months so i started getting mini heart attacks ) then I tried 40-50 times more.. restarted my cell 3-4 times.. neither would it get locked not it would give me alternate method of unlocking.. thats stupid right ?? :silly:
I couldnt do anything. I checked online and found out that KITKAT DOESNT HAVE ALTERNATIVE OPTION of locking (or unlocking for that matter). Since my mobile data was off (I dont have wifi) I couldnt lock and unlock it using Android Device Manager (ADM) as well. So I was royally screwed ... and only apparent way out would entail data loss :crying:
I could just use camera and nothing else.
So I slept badly thinking that I would factory reset my nexus the next day. And in the morning it suddenly hit me :good:. I had also installed Floating Toucher app yesterday and I could see the floater even on my camera app. So I touched that.. opened quick launch and enabled mobile data. Then went on and locked my nexus using ADM and then I could unlock it with new password. phew...
so it was in all weirdest experience.
Now here are my findings
1) KitKat doesnt have alternative unlocking method
2) Nor does it lock your cell permanently. I mean you could try all permutations and combinations till you unlock it. (my ancient nokia would lock after few wrong tries..) and thats serious flow in system
3) Swiftkey may have screwed me over.
4) Floating Toucher (though proved as my saviour) could bypass system lock and thus one could use (or misuse) it.
Any thoughts on these people ??
Sorry for looooooong post
and sorry for toooooooo long post. I couldnt wrap it up without telling everything.
