So I've imported my nexus 5 from the US to somewhere in the APAC region.
As you know the D820 only supports LTE in the Americas Region.
My network's LTE only works with the D821.
So should i leave the settings in .....settings > Data > mobile networks > 4G,3G,2G ???????
It seems like my battery's been draining abit faster than normal..i'm wondering if it's pinging constantly ?
I can use the DC-HSPA+ network here ...but is that 3G or 4G ...if i set it to 3G will I get HSPA+ ??
It never says DC on the signal icon ...
Also...when you set it to 3G ...then exit...then comes back in...nothing is selected.

HSPA+ is the equivalent to 4G - from my understanding if you have your phone set to allow HSPA+ or 4G, it can connect UP TO that speed. It should also connect to lower speeds 3G/2G (Edge) depending on whats available. Having your phone set to connect ANY cellular web will constantly hit towers trying to find the best and fastest one. So if you're seeing your battery drain faster than usual, it's not because of this. You may have something running to do it.
Go into Settings and look at your battery stats to see what's using the most. For the Nexus 5, you should see Screen and Google Search more than anything.
If you're unsure what speeds your getting, download a speedtester to find out exactly what you're getting.

My phone does something weird. When the data mode, shown beside the battery icon, is shown as 3G, no data transfer can be made until it is changed to 'H'. This gets very annoying.
The problem is that it stays at 3G until I want to do some data transfer, then it changes to 'H' which takes some time.
Anybody gets this as well? Is there anyway to prevent this?

H means hsdpa, which is High Speed Downlink Packet Access. It is 3.5G. And it is faster than 3G.

I think, its metwork config...
I had this very same issue in UK (Virgin pay as you go)
Sent from my HTC Desire S using Tapatalk
Same issue with o2 Pay Monthly, although it generally switches to H quite quickly when data access is required.

Correct me if I'm wrong. H means HSPA, which is 3.5G, and 3G is 3G in itself, and G is 2G? I thought 2G didn't allow data transmission? So isn't 'G', 3G?
I understand HSPA is supposed to be faster than 3G, but the problem is that 3G doesn't allow any data transmission.

"WCDMA"
H = HSPA = 3.5G
3G = 3G
"GSM"
E = EDGE = 2.5G
G = GPRS = 2G
All of them allow data access, or should do anyway.

No, "G" is not "3G". "G" means GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and is an old standart to transfer data via GSM. It is, in fact, the slowest ond one of the oldest.
There are two networks, "2G" which is "G" or "E" (EDGE which is is a litlle bit faster than "GPRS" - and "3G" (now even "4G" ) which is a high spead network. "H" should mean "HSDPA" or "HSPA"
Oooops, to slow.
In addition: Via 3G you can do data connection and phone calls at the same time, this you can not do in 2G

Your phone will check to see what the best connection available is before downloading. The wait is down to your network provider's service and availability. And possibly your radio. It's not that it wont download on 3G. It will. It's just that 99 times out of 100 if 3G is available, so is HSDPA so it'll go for that one over 3G every time. Unless you are on my network provider. Then you'd get better consistent data transfer over a piece of wet string.
You could go into your phone setting and choose 'WCDMA only' if you generally have good coverage and want to cut the wait out?
Dial *#*#4636#*#*, from the resulting menu select 'Phone Information' then scroll to the bottom and change the drop-down menu to 'WCDMA only'.
Does that help?
Tip:
You can also do this without dialing a code:
Got to settings/wireless & network/Mobile network/Network mode
So you don't have to remember the code if you want to change settings

I tried this. For now it seems that it is stuck at HSPA now! Thanks! Am I right to assume that under WCDMA only mode, I either get HSPA data or no data at all? The phone will not go to 3G or 2G right? (there's no 2.5G here)
Thanks to the others who clarified the 2G,3G,3.5G terms. I understand it more clearly now!

WCDMA only means you will only have HSPA and 3G connections. You will not have, as you wrote, 2G. 2.5G means EDGE which is still a 2G connection but a little bit faster than GPRS, and right, you will not have that.

HSPA includes HSDPA and HSUPA. I really don't know the difference between them.

HSPA is faster than HSDPA, and HSUPA is the standart for uploads. You should visit Wikipedia for detailed information.

Herro! first time poster, long time lurker! i searched around, and couldn't really find a similar problem.
I got an HTC one S from Fido, unlocked it, and i've been trying to use it on Bell. I tried several different APN's until one finally worked...but only EDGE speeds! It's also draining my battery extremely quickly. also, when i put my bell sim card inside, preferred network mode changes to WCDMA instead of HSPA (like on the fido sim).
why is this happening? i was told a fido phone would work on bell with no problem. why no 4g speeds?
thank you and i appreciate the responses in advance
HSPA uses WCDMA, so that makes no sense... Under preferred network you should have WCDMA only, 2G only, or WCDMA preferred if I recall correctly as I'm not on stock HTC rom atm so can't check. Are you getting an "E" signal indicator or are you just getting a slow connection? What does it say under About phone>Status>Mobile Network Type?
Set it to Auto mode in the network settings.

yeah, all the tech support i've talked to said it makes no sense either . i get the same outcome whether i put it on WCDMA only or GSM/WCDMA auto. when i do the speed test, it always comes out under 1 mb/s. it actually has the 4G symbol up, but the speed isn't there.
mhmm, it switches between UMTS and HSDPA.
If you have UMTS and HSPDA under status its working, and those are also what connection you're really on. If you always have a 4g icon on status bar it seems like your carrier has modded the software like T-Mobile USA does so it always shows 4g no matter what's up in the real world.
Maybe you're not in a good location and that's why you get slow data. Also I have no idea how Canadian carriers work but I'd guess if you're connected to a 850 MHz cell you'll get worse speeds than on a 1700/1900 one. Don't you guys have insane data caps everywhere, perhaps you hit yours when speedtesting?
did you try a new sim from bell
I thought I can connect my 4GS onto the other UMTS network, but its max was HSDPA:9 (HSDPA:8 in JB).
Other phone such as Photon Q didn't have problem in connecting with HSPA+:15
Do I have to manually enable something? I believe this phone's potential is better than this
My carrier is using 2100MHz band, and my baseband ROM is a new one.
Is this info relevant : ?

If your carrier is using the 2100MHz frequency, this phone should have no problem using HSPA+ with it. When I travel to China, I use a China Unicom SIM in my MT4GS which enables my phone to use their 2100MHz HSPA+ network without any problem. Back at home in US, I use T-Mobile SIM.

So, you are seeing H+ (HSPAP:15) right? All I can see with various ROMs are only 3G and H....
Do speed tests, symbols don't always mean what they say after all

just tested: only around 3Mbps whereas other hspa+ phone got 9Mbps...
Is there any hidden menu to tick this on?

The stock ROMs are configured by HTC/T-Mobile to display 4G when it has a HSPA+ connection. Other ROMs, however, will display 3G or H (depending on the ROM) for HSPA+. So, if you see 3G, H, or 4G, they are all HSPA+ connections. This phone operates data in the G (GPRS), E (2G or EDGE), and 4G/3G/H (HSPA+) modes. Depending on the carrier, it can perform up to 14Mbps HSPA+ but of course, you would rarely see that fast in the real world. It does not operate at the 21+ or 42+ levels of HSPA+.
I'm on a stock-based ROM (Miktouch), when I'm home on T-Mobile, I see 4G. Also, when I'm in China and connected to China Unicom, I see 4G.
I've never seen "H" on this phone, it always shown 3G or 4G (using stock ROM, just de-junked and rooted by myself)
IIRC speed test results, I had best down speed exceeding 14+Mbps on Wind in Vancouver and Toronto areas, but in US it almost always was 3G only (but then I was usually outside any large cities).

Thanks for the input, if you are using non-stock rom, still would you let me know what the following says in the most normal case:
setting - phone - status - mobile network type.
In my case, it's HSDPA:9, which seems obviously non-HSPA. Other phone shows HSPA+:15 or HSPAP:15.
Am I missing something, or HSDPA:9 can be also considered as a decent HSPA+ ?
I'm kinda downshifting toward MT4GS recently as I love its small form factor, but somewhat at a loss due to this limitation, thanks.
Is there a way to see and change the LTE BAND that my phone is on? Rogers support aws, 2600, 700. So I was wondering if I could manually change between them. The S5 has that option in the hidden menu, so I'm hoping I could do the same on this one.
Thanks.
The phone choose the band himself, if he don't find bands authorized by your phone company, he can't use them.

*#*#46363#*#* > Phone information > Set Preferred Network Type > 'LTE/GSM auto (PRL)'
That's as far as you can get in telling it what network to operate on. It won't let you select specific bands (at least not stock). Mine was set to 'TD-SCDMA, GSM and LTE' out of the box (international version) and since I don't plan to use my phone in China anytime soon, it didn't make sense for the phone to waste resources searching for a TD-SCDMA (China's homebrew 4G) signal. Haven't noticed much improvement to my LTE signal though, still the weakest radio I've seen in a 'flagship' in a while.
Thanks.
I am also on Rogers.
Does that mean when I am on the phone, it will revert to EDGE instead of 3g by using the LTE-edge setting?
I have major issues with reception on this phone.
LTE Works Fine but the 3G/H+ signal is awful, absolute disaster on this phone. It is extremely, extremely weak. And I lose coverage often and over 50% of the times my calls go straight to voicemail because Rogers uses 2g/3g for calling. The phone can't drop back to 2G or 3G in time to receive calls when on LTE
Rly frustrating. Have tried playing with all the settings.

I'm having issues with 3G H+ too. Dont know its CM issue or not coz I had nice H+ signals on Color OS...
Can't even use internet data. most of the time network drops after using internet for a bit.. Network just suddenly gone and after that it comes back with no internet. Internet comes back online after a while...
Really worried.. and annoyed coz can't seem to find any solve for this. Even Mahdi rom had this issue..
I just changed the old seem I've had for a few years to a new "4g compatible" sim card since my new moto g has 4g. The thing is there has been no change in the icon I get on my status bar when I'm not connected to any WiFi. It's still a letter H and the signal triangle. Is the icon supposed to be different when I get 4g?
It is suppoded to say 4G or LTE, depenidng on the rom. I get LTE on custom roms and 4G n stock. Also check on the mobile networks settings the prefered type is 4G
It varies by model, carrier, and country. Symbols you will see for 4G are: 4G, LTE, H, H+. Like the previous post said make sure you have 4G/LTE select as preferred in your network settings. You can test your speed to see if it's 4G with apps like Speedtest from the Play Store.

Speedtest isn't really a reliable way of determining connection type, I have seen areas where 3G/HSPA is much faster than LTE and other places where LTE is 100 times faster than 3G. The best way is by the symbol next to your mobile connection when WiFi is off, or use an app like Network Signal Info which will give you very detailed information about both your mobile and wifi connections.
