Hello,
I been googleing on how to connect the nexus 5 to a ps3 controller without success.
Is there a way to do it without rooting the phone? I just would like to play some ROMs with an actual controller.
Any info is welcom!
Thanks!

you need an OTG cable , connect the controller using the cable that you use for charging your controller with the OTG cable, then plug the micro usb side into your nexus 5. you don't need root, you will see your controller lights blinking, and you can navigate your homescreens left/right, access apps etc..
Hmm I've also read that the phones need to be natively compatible in order to work with just a cable. Can you clarify if this is true or not?
thanks for the info!
I use the sixaxis app, works beautifully, no cables either.

Yeah but requires to root the device first correct?
What are the advantages or disadvantages on rooting the Nexus 5? I mean, I still want to get the latest update automatically and I don't want to lose any features with my device. Anyone know?
thanks!
My apologies. Root is required, it allows you to become in full control of your device. If I recall having root access does not limit your ability to get OTA updates. Only a custom recovery will prevent that from happening. As long as you keep the stock recovery you should be fine.

our nexus 5 works well with the cable, no root or anything needed. just attach your controller with it's charging cable to the USB port of the OTG, plug the other side of the OTG (micro-USB) into yout phone, and it'll recognize it.
you need the sixaxis app for wireless control, also for some games which do not support controllers natively.

rooting will not have any impact on the ability to get OTA updates, but if you make any modifications to your /system partition (add/delete/modify system files), then you'll have to reflash (via fastboot) stock /system extracted from a factory image (or reflash a whole factory image).
Also be aware that for rooting you'll have to have an unlocked bootloader, and unlocking your bootloader will wipe your phone, even your SD , so make sure you back up your photos, contacts and anything of any value to you that you have stored on your phone.
hi all together,
i´ve also a question. i try to connect my nexus 5 via usb host to the ps3 controller. nothing happens. what am i doing wrong? if i push the PS button, the led´s stay dark.

Hi,
I just received my TF700 and trying to connect to my XP PC to copy music and movies on to it.
My computer does not succeed in installing the necessary drivers to make it look like DOK.
What am I doing wrong? This should be a simple task (how will I be able to fill my 64GB ?)
Thanks,
edit: after installing PC suit from TF101 support page it works.
But why can't we charge the TF700 via USB....?

I could be wrong but iirc i've read somewhere that in order to charge it from USB you have to power off your device first.

There's simply not enough power coming from the USB port.
The reason why connecting failed is because XP doesn't support the MTP connection, which the Infinity uses, from the beginning.

Just for reference for new users reading through this thread: you cannot access an Android 4.x+ device as a USB Mass Storage device AT ALL -- this was sacrificed for the more stable and safe MTP connection. The latter should work if you install the drivers, as the OP already has found out.

I would have to respectfully disagree. My SGS2 running ICS has the USB mode ability. Settings / More (under data usage) / USB Utilities / USB mass storage.click the button, connect the USB cable, and there ya go!
Unfortunately, this option is either disabled or nonexistant in the transformers.

I reckon that's because the SGSII is not a original 4.0 device. It came with 2.3 on the market.
However I don't know if the manufacturers are still allowed to use it in their new devices.

This is because the SGS2 was not released with ICS. It was upgraded to ICS. The real reason why UMS is not available on native ICS devices (aside from mounting external SD cards with UMS) is because Google decided to use one large volume for the internal storage instead of several. Devices that were upgraded to ICS after being release still have several volumes instead of one. Trying to rewrite the partition table during an update would be destructive, causing the loss of all data, and no manufacturer would want to do that to their customer's devices.

When updating with kies it would copy personal data to the computer and restore that data after the update was complete. I wonder if the S3 has this functionality (usb mode). I know with the S2 there was a big deal about upgrading to ICS because it had to repartition everything, lots of warnings about losing data on the phone, never stopped us we just made backups and away we go. I dont see how the prime is much different, the USB mode COULD be put into it the same way it was put into the samsung roms, doesnt even need to be default, just there for those people like me that prefer it.

As said above, MTP mode is standard in ICS and UMS is no longer supported (and indeed the reason was the single-volume approach, and the fact that MTP makes the filesystem available to the host computer without the need for unmounting, and thus eliminates the risk for introducing filesystem errors on the host -- the Android system keeps everything under control and access to the filesystem is transparent to the host.)
Obviously, anything can be hacked together, and there are apps that seem to able to provide UMS mode.
Not a matter of disagreeing, but unfortunate reality.

By the way, I strongly prefer UMS mode as well, since the computers at work (hospital) are pretty much closed-off to anything included installing any software or drivers, and they disallow MTP. Previously, I could at least access my SGS2 as a thumb drive, but with my current ROM (RootBox ICS) that's no longer an option.

Windows XP does support MTP, but one would need to have Windows Media Player 10 or later installed (WMP10 added MTP).

Has anyone been able to connect a ps3 controller via usb to play games? My old phone worked out of the box. My tablet did not, and I had to root it and use the Sixaxis app. I would prefer not to root this thing yet until there is more information about root.
More info? Root is root. It's not going to make your phone explode..

U WOT M8?
I connected my ps3 controller via a usb OTG cable, and nothing. Doesn't work in or out of any games. And what I mean by I want to wait is, I just want to wait and see if anyone has any problems, or if people are getting bricked at all. Plus I would like to wait until the first firmware update from Verizon. I know there are a few features that it will update, and I'd rather just have the carrier update do it rather than rooting and flashing a rom update. And also, the Sixaxis app with root is still pretty buggy on my old phone and my tablet. I would prefer just to connect with the usb cable if it's possible.
Yeah I wasn't able to get my PS3 controller working using an OTG cable either. I used to be able to use my controller on my S3 and S4 via OTG cable OR Bluetooth. I had it paired to my S4 last. I just downloaded Sixaxis pair tool, and Sixaxis controller app and reprogrammed the controller's master address to my M8, fired up Sixaxis controller and it pair right up no problem. Now I'm playing my Emulators on my M8. Yay. Now I just need a GameKlip for the M8..
I imagine that if you didn't want to S-OFF and all that you could just use the Weaksauce temp-root method to use Sixaxis controller and pair your M8 with bluetooth. Then if you wanted to use the contoller to play games all you would have to do is install weaksauce real quick, fire up root, and use Sixaxis. That would probably work pretty nicely. Just a thought.
Why are you so afraid of root? Nothing is going to happen...
This maybe old but i would like to know if there is a non root way. doesn't bother me to root. however I'd like to know if there is an easy path once rooted upgrade only root.. I'd like to be on latest versions of whatever kernel i choose but have to avoid having to backup all my apps, remove root and reinstall root, reinstall all my apps again. what a hassle.
Hi,
To cut a long story short, my four day old phone was run over by a bus last night and the screen shattered making it unresponsive to any touch, though the phone itself is still "working". I have a pattern lockscreen which I obviously can't undo and Android File Transfer won't let me see the data on the phone until it's unlocked - is there any way I can access the photos I have taken on the phone (they didn't upload to the cloud because I wasn't on wifi)?
If it's relevant, the bootloader is unlocked.
Thanks,
F
First up, count yourself lucky that you were not talking on the phone at the time
You should be able to get them by plugging the phone into your pc should enable you to get your photos from it.

I was running to catch said bus, tripped, phone went flying, bus moved off and crushed the phone!
I have a Mac and use Android File Transfer which won't recognise the device until the lockscreen is cleared - do you think I'll have more luck if I plug it into a Windows PC?
Should do. I am able to get stuff from mine by just plugging it into my Surface 2
Much appreciated - I'll post again after I've found someone with a Windows-based laptop.

Yup, that's an idea.
Or you have USB debugging enabled, try adb pull command?
The story so far - I connected the OPO to a Windows PC and it was recognised as a Portable Media Device. That's where the story ends - no files were shown.
When I carried out the same procedure with my Nexus 5, I had to switch between MTP and PTP for any files to be shown on the PC - when initially plugged in (in MTP), nothing was shown but when switched to PTP, all the photos popped up and when switched back to MTP, all data on the OPO was shown.
Obviously, I can't change the USB setting on the OPO. However, now the battery has run down, I can reboot the OPO into fastboot or recovery if required (USB debugging is enabled) with stock recovery. Is there a way of transferring data from the OPO when in recovery or fastboot mode? If there is, a step-by-step guide would be extremely appreciated.
I wasn't able to switch off the phone once the screen was damaged. Is there a way to force it to switch off using only the buttons?
Thanks,
F

I'd say it will work.
I don't own an Opo, but I can do this in all my cm devices without doing anything. It's possible to past the lock screen. I'd ask someone with an Opo and otg cable to test it for you.

Yes, I managed to get an invitation from the thread here on xda on Saturday morning. I'll deal with insurance and sell it on in due course....
I have a nVidia Shield that I upgraded to 5.0 'Lollipop' and it's not rooted. When I plug in my PS3 controller via USB it works flawlessly - every button works perfectly without using any sort of joystick application (apk). So anyone that wants to use their PS3 controller on the nVidia Shield just plug it in and you're golden.
The issue is when I unplug it I can't get it to work. The tablet won't see the PS3 controller at all until I used the SixaxisPairTool (SixaxisPairToolSetup-0.3.0) to pair it. Now when I turn bluetooth on the tablet sees it, but it's asking for the PAIR PIN which isn't the default 0000 or 1234. Does anyone know how to find the PIN so I can pair it or another way to go about doing this?
I think the tablet has to be rooted in order for the sixaxispairtool to really function correctly. I am also running unrooted. And decided to just get a $20 nyko play pad pro. Can't bring myself to spend $60 on a controller I'm not sure I will use that often.

I've read reports that the Sixaxis Controller APK (root required) program doesn't work on Lollipop. I won't root my tablet nor have I even found a method to root an already updated version (the only method I found to root the nVidia Shield w/Lollipop is to unlock the boot loader before upgrading to Lollipop). As far as I know the SixaxisPairTool by itself simply pairs the controller with the tablet so the tablet can communicate with it - which it does, but requires the PIN to function correctly. Someone must know how to figure out the PIN required.

Sixaxis works fine on lollipop. The screenshots of it in the google play store are lollipop. Yes you need root to use it. I used my pc to pair the controller with the shield then run the app to connect to it wirelessly.
Also you can root lollipop after upgrading but have to unlock to do so.

Well, I read reports that Lollipop breaks the Sixaxis Controller app (unless it's been updated) and the rooting guides on this forum say you have to already have unlocked the boot loader before upgrading to Lollipop to root it. It really doesn't matter because I'm not going to void the warranty, but I really wish I knew how to find the PIN for the sixaxis controller. My searches also find people that would like to know how to find the bluetooth pairing PIN too.

Sorry for being OT, but you can root after the update. But you have to unlock the bootloader if you updated. You misunderstood what you read. You don't have to unlock the bootloader if you rooted and had recovery before updating. And I believe I just read that unlocking the bootloader does not void the warranty (somebody got that answer from Nvidia customer support, and the unlock instructions are on nvidias site).
Just being informative, sadly my USB otg cable is awful and I probably can't get it to connect to my tab.

I understand that. I was just clearing up misinformation. Also, have you used the sixaxis pair tool on a pc? It had been some time since I went through the process, but I believe you get the pin on there. Either way, you need to connect it to a pc at least once last I checked.

The only way the tablet will even see the PS3 gamepad (wirelessly) is to use the sixaxis pairing tool and it doesn't give the PIN.
Recently picked up a shield tablet, rooted with king root after doing all updates to lollipop. Used six axis controller and Dual Shock PS3 controller to connect via OTA and USB which works fine but cannot connect via Bluetooth. Both 0000 and 1234 do not really on successful connection. Hoping someone can help with this matter. I'll keep searching the forums. Thanks in advance

The device itself has to physically support USB OTG. For USB OTG to work, the device has to provide power to the USB (not just receive charge from). Sometimes the solution to that is to use a powered USB OTG cable (this will have another plug to get power), but even in that case, the device has to have OTG support built into the kernel, which, if the device doesn't physically support USB OTG, it's unlikely to support it in the kernel.
Best bet is simply to download something to the phone and transfer it via USB to your computer.
