Nexus 5 won't record sound whilst filming - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. My Nexus 5 won't record any sound at all when I am filming with the camera. Front and back cameras do the same. It didn't used to do this, only noticed today.
What can I do? I am rooted with stock ROM and franco kernel.
Cheers.

Nexus s 4g video camera dark

I recently got my Nexus S 4g and I love the phone but I have a problem. Why is it that when I start the video camera the picture looks fine but as soon as I hit record it looks as though it is recording through sunglasses? The picture gets really dark and barely visible, is this a setting that I am missing? Or is it a hardware problem?

Audio recording problem with different apps

Hi,
Trying to record an audio on my nexus (lecture for example) and having some issues with it.
I start record and then leave it with screen off for an about half hour or more (plenty of space for the file). when I start to listen to the audio that I recorded, the sound is not clear with gaps.
Checked the recorded audio on my PC also and still same result - awful sound with gaps.
It is not app related because I tried already 5 or more of them (apps that work great on my old HTC desire).
I'm using stock rom (4.4.2) with Franco kernel - without modifications to it.
Any suggestions ?
Its the microphone or rather, the noise cancellation algorithm. We're hoping the next update fixes it

So there is nothing to do for now? In my opinion it is something to do with noice cancellation algorithm.

Best you can do for now is ensure the build.prop has the below entries
Persist.audio.fluence.voicecall=false
persist.audio.fluence.voicerec=false
persist.audio.fluence.speaker=false

Only voicecall state is true.

Install third company apps may be my choice now.
Can you please write specific app that works?

If its noise cancellation, no apps work

Most people believe its software, but I believe its hardware. Maybe the Nexus 5 has a very poor microphone.
If it was software it wouldn't make sense that Google takes 8 months to release a fix so...

1) phone hasn't even been out 4 months
2) they obviously didn't know the issue existed at release
3) what's your experience of writing noise cancellation algorithms that you know how long it takes?
4) if its "hardware", why has it taken "Google" as long as "8 months" to replace the microphone?
5) how come disabling the noise cancellation in build prop for phone calls removes the issue in phone calls if its hardware?
Believe what you want, but you have no more insight than anyone else and no evidence to suggest anything

The application of logic comes naturally to me. There was no trying involved

Great reply :good:

So have they fixed the rubbish speaker?

Seeing as how my moto x Dev edition just broke... (Microphone just failed)
I'm thinking about the nexus 5 again.
Only if... However they've fixed that garbage quality speaker.
Can someone shed some light?

No. Same erratic build, no new 'version'.

There was a software update for the speaker. Fixed the volume being unusually low in certain apps.
If you root the phone there are many options to increase volume and audio quality. Unrooted you can use equalizers for a small boost.
I find it loud enough to hear my ringtone in a noisy environment and clear enough to enjoy videos and music with.

I never thought the N5 speaker was garbage... better than the S3s I had in every single way.

If you are rooted then install ViPer4Android. It so dynamically changes the sound quality you will wonder what all the *****ing is about. Check for the ViPer4Android thread in the Nexus 5 themes and apps section for how to install it. In that thread is a flash file that makes things a little easier. In my opinion Google should buy ViPer4Android and make it standard. I use it on all my Android devices.

My girlfriend's HTC One Mini has much better speakers than my N5. But my screen, processor, RAM, etc. are all much better. Depends what's most important to you. You could always use headphones
Google will push new speakers through an update soon BTW read the suggestions above.
Tested audio quality with earphones and without using Google music+equalizer and I can say that audio quality is GREAT.
Honestly after reading some users complains about audio quality I excepted it worse, but like for me,a music lover,it's great. :good:
So is it possible that I got a gimped one from the first order? Way back on release week.

Some nexus 5's had really low volume on the speaker. That's why people started drilling holes in it.

Disable IOS on Nexus 5

Does anyone know if, and how we could Disable IOS on Nexus 5, i.e. fix the lens? When the camera is on the Dash I get very shaky vibrating Recordings. When mounted on the windscreen it is slightly better but is still inacceptable for me.
I hav another older phone without ois and that does it very well ......

Only one of the "speakers" on the bottom of the Nexus 5 is actually a speaker and the other is a microphone. If the device is held correctly then it shouldn't be a problem no matter which hand it is held in..
I know but i found this problem last night no idea what should i do or try btw phone is fully stock rom

Well, there is absolutely no reason why "call quality" would go bad when held with a specific hand. The only reason it would ever happen is if something were to obstruct (or similar) the microphone.
Everything perfect cleaned so gues its hardware problem with microphone

The metal plate on the right side of her head interferes with the signal.
She should use her left hand. Problem solved.
Women eh... ?
