[Q] Does ART affect battery life? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Nexus 5 will be here soon and I just want to know if ART has any effects on battery life because I plan on using it despite some apps being incompatible with it.

When it comes to battery life thread you'll have two different replies, yes it drains more battery and no it doesn't drain more battery, just better to experience it yourself.

I heard it makes battery life better and performance its just not stable yet

ART doesnt affect battery. and ART is stable, but a few apps wont work with it(a far majority will).

Actually running in art should improve battery life a little as the operations are being performed in native code and not having to be processed through a VM.

Hmm. I'm sorry but I don't get why that would save more battery though. It's still using up the same amount of processing power right?

In theory it has less processing to do.

App that checks battery used by each app?

Okay do basically what the title says. I suspect there's an up that's not showing up in my settings that's taking up battery life since I noticed my battery life has gotten worse lately. Is there an app that checks how much battery each app has used up? Thanks for any help

GSAM battery monitor. Has an app sucker that shows what % each process/app is using.

Better Battery Stats is what you want. Breaks everything down nicely. Just take a a minute to understand it. Read the help file. Then it all makes sense.

Just about any ROM ive noticed lately has that option in the Battery Stats screen just select the App.....Voila!

Awake vs Screen on

I can't seem to figure out the difference between the screen being on and the device being awake... I thought they were the same thing?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
Screen on is the screen is physically on. Awake is the processor is running an apps are using power. You wouldn't want awake to be a lot unless your screen is on a lot. If it is, that means something is running while your screen is off(wake lock). Typically resulting in a bad battery drain.

What apps are known for running in wake lock? Is it a system problem?

if i remember correctly, better battery stats is a highly recommended app for monitoring wakelocks/battery usage

I've heard of GSam as well as better battery stats, and then being differently priced, is there a key difference or advantage to one or the other? Dropping a buck more for better battery doesn't bother me, I just don't wanna have to buy both in the end.

Better battery stats is very powerful, it reads pretty much everything. It will take a bit of research to understand all of its functions though. It also uses root permissions to dig deep into the kernels power consumption. If you really don't want to donate (pay), the paid version is available in the apps section for free for xda members.

Battery Usage

I've had nexus nexus 5 since the 5th... I was wondering I'm I getting normal battery usage ? Is this normal ?
Looks about normal to me. Given high pixel density and 1080p plus network connectivity and google apps.
You can improve it by turning off GPA, Location services, and other useless activity you have going on to give it a boost.

How bright is your screen? I turned it down a bit ~ 15% level to save some battery.

I forgot to mention I was running ART instead of Dalvik

I have it on auto
Getting off topic... What's it like running ART? I don't really understand it. Auto brightness will eat some more battery.

Sorry about that..... ART promises faster and more efficient execution, better battery life, and a more fluid experience, stock is dalvik. Google said ART is in beta and may not be %100, but my friend is running ART and he's getting amazing battery life.

Killing apps is it worth it??

I have a bad habit of frequently clearing all apps from my recents
I somewhere read that it's not good (can't remember where)
So is it worth killing apps frequently ?? Does this effect battery life too??
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Hi,
I would say you "kill" multitasking...
...which is actually not good, because opening an app that is already in the phones RAM loads much faster plus it doesn't consume that much battery juice
Just leave em. Don't be obsessed with closing stuff all the time
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Apps running in your multi tasking window still drain some battery. Even Google suggests closing them if you're not using them, to extend battery life.
Launching apps doesn't doesn't spike my current widget readings so I don't think much battery is used there. I've noticed rebooting the phone does cause huge spikes though so try and only do that while plugged in.

This topic has been debated again and again. It makes no tangible difference in battery life. If you want to swipe your apps, go ahead and swipe them. You will never see a difference in battery. And that's because there isn't one.
I notice that if I don't reboot my N5 for a long time, my available RAM goes down to <150mb regardless of what I close. Does it sound like I have a bad app?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
no point. the device is more than capable of handling multiple apps open in the background.

Usually its best to just keep pressing the back button repeatedly to exit an app and let it be in the recents. I read that just swiping the app off the Recent doesn't completely exit the app and there's still some background process that will be running for some time.

What works best for me is leaving all the apps that I'll be using more than 2/3 times during the day and closing all others.

How is everybody rooted getting such good battery life?

How are y'all doing it? 6 hours? That's not that good to me. And some dude said he got 6 hours of on-screen time. I'm rooted with experimental kernel

That's a whole battery thread. Go there
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
I went through it. I just need help with the voltages and all that. The best settings for battery life.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
battery life isnt really about what kernel you use. battery life is all about how you use your phone, how you set it up, what apps you use, and most importantly, the quality of your phone/data connection. sure, a kernel might be able to help you get slightly better battery. but its really your use and your signal. and if your signal is bad quality, then your battery will always suffer.
"Good battery life" does not apply to "everybody" that has rooted. Many root and simply expect that battery life must be improved, but still need to understand the basic laws of physics first.
(People's definition of "Good" in this scenario also varies massively...)
It comes down to how you use the device. There is no 'best settings' you should be looking for. Save yourself the time, and first understand what is using your battery.
SOT is a measurement, but a crude one. It offers no insight into what those 6 hours were doing...You can be certain that it wasn't 6 hours gaming at 100% brightness though. Under relatively light CPU load, low brightness, good signal etc...the laws of physics will explain higher SOT...

this past week some people were having problems with the battery life on CM11 ROM, but it seems it's been fixed on the nightly version, try downloading greenify so you can put those annoying battery eating apps to sleep

What I did to improve my battery life was to deny most of the Google apps from waking my device and/or keeping my device awake. I have attached pictures. This improved my battery by atleast double. Also using 2g connection when connected to WiFi.
Those denied numbers have risen to 6 digits.

I suppose to rephrase the question "what other battery saving options are available to root users?"
