[Q] Any thoughts on screen quality? - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am thinking on buying this phone.
What about screen quality, let's say compared to Nexus 5?
I am aware the resolution is lower. The DPI are very high anyway on the Moto G so that shouldn't be a problem at all.
What I am really interested in is screen quality.
What can you say abou that?
Thanks!

Not too bad
The Nexus 5 boasts a 4.95-inch 1920×1080
display (445 ppi) while the Moto G comes with
a 4.5-inch 1280×720 (329 ppi) screen. Not
only smaller, the Motorola screen is also a
lower resolution and pixel per inch count. Not
that this is perceptible to most users, but’s a
difference on paper. What’s more, the added
benefit of the lower resolution comes in
battery life and performance. In other words,
it’s less demanding of the phone to power
those pixels.
Any way N5 is better at every single aspect than the moto G but being said thats its cheaper and its resolution is also not too bad so It would be a better option if you have a low budget.........
Nexus 5 =Excellent
Moto G =Very good
Hit thanks if helped....

Until I get a moto g I won't be able to honestly comment but in he reviews I've read the colour reproduction is supposed to be better than the N5.
I have perfect vision and comparing a 329ppi and and 445ppi would be so minute that 99% of people wouldn't be able to tell the difference

I have both a Nexus 5 and a Moto G with me at the moment.
Yes the Nexus 5 screen is better (hardly surprising) but the Moto G is still very good, especially when you take into account it's pricetag.

Hi Rusty. I want to know abt the Camera Quality of Moto G. is that comparable to as that of Nexus 4's? I know that N4's cam is 8MP as compared to MotoG's just 5MP. But its not always about the Pixel count. I have seen some sample shots of MotoG and they look quite promising.
Regards,
Shikhar

Had N5 too, Moto G screen is better in colors and viewing angles. Even the black is more black on Moto G, and not "grey" as with Nexus 5.

No not really, the shots I've taken with the G are not as good as the Nexus 4/5. That could just be me though.

They use different display Technologies
N5=IPS
Moto G=AMOLED
IPS has more Accurate colours, "USUALLY" has better viewing angles, MUCH higher max brightness (nits)
AMOLED has oversaturated colours causing the colours to "Pop", Much Deeper blacks because the Pixels aren't On unlike IPS and because of that it tends to have slightly better battery life

Pretty sure Moto G uses IPS as well, it was mentioned in all the tech news I read. There is a possibility that they could be wrong, but I think they out number you before proven otherwise

Moto X uses AMOLED, Moto G and Nexus 5 have both IPS LCD and believe me, Nexus 5 is way more worse in viewing angles than Moto G.

@BoltActionWaffle, Research when you have time. Moto G has an IPS like panel and LCD screen. If you say, Amoled then you're referring to Moto X.. okay?

N5 has the worse screen?

Only if viewing angles are all you care about.
Most people don't use their phone at 60°, though.

I do care, yes, because I see this every day when the Phone lies next to me on the desk.
You don't even need 60°, don't try to troll me

I don't know what all the fuss about viewing angles is, personally I look at my phone head on

I don't think we should discuss here, if, why and when something is useful/stupid or not - the OP clearly asked a question: "How is the screen quality compared to for example a Nexus 5" and so we should answer this
Sorry for the people who own a more expensive phone with lack of screen quality compared to a budget phone, and this implies color, black point and viewing angles, but reality is sometimes hard to take.

Sorry, I got confused with the Moto X. :/

The Moto G screen is alright. Compared it right to my Nexus 5 and couldnt make out a large difference. Both are IPS as mentioned before. Although the black is darker on AMOLED, I prefer the colortone of IPS panels.

This is the best screen I have had. It seems way sharper and colourful than my friends s4. I actually had n5, i5, s4 and MG out together and the mg looked best. It wasn't just price that blinded me, it was clarity. As for Camera, it takes much better pics than my old DHD and nexS.

[Q] Super LCD 2 vs Super Amoled HD

I recently picked up a Galaxy Note for at&t and love the 5.3" Super amoled HD display. I've never been a big fan of Samsung phones and there cheap build quality but the Note's screen had me sold. On the other hand, I've always been a huge fan of HTC products and their premium build quality. I also prefer sense over touch wiz but that really doesn't matter seeing that I usually flash stock roms onto my devices. It really boils down to the display for me. So if anyone has seen the HTC One X in person or knows if the technology in the LCD 2 display is comparable or better than the Super Amoled HD display on the galaxy note, please let me know. I couldn't stand looking back at the grayish blacks on my old sensation compared to my galaxy note. I've read that the one x has great viewing angles but i haven't heard anyone compare it to amoled and i can't really judge from photos and videos as most displays look better in person. So... What do you guys think about the displays? Is it worth exchanging the note for a HTC One XL preorder? All help is appreciated and i will give thanks to those that are helpful.
Did you try hitting someone up on Twitter who is a tech blogger that made their way to Mobile World Congress?
Maybe someone will take the time to give you their feelings on the SLCD2 screen on the One X.
there are a couple people in the One X forums who are currently testing the phone. Since it is the exact same device sans chip and storage, I would venture there because there is a lot more activity. On a side note, I hear the super LCD 2 is a FANTASTIC screen...
Thanks. I'll try to do some more searching. I thanked you both. Also, I did find a beta tester but he has yet to mention anything about the screen. I'll shoot him a message.
Well I try the SuperLCD 2 in MWC and I was really excited because it's screen are very brilliant and colorfull. The black is strong black, not exactly how shows SuperAmoled but pretty well. I have a Sensation and has BIG difference betwen it.
And one more thing (not just an Apple ) the One X screen (same on One XL) is Super IPS screen.
I think that contrast is 1:10000 when in sensation was 1:7000.
Hope I help you! Sorry for my english xD

Sensation XL: 1:1000

One XL: More or less like Sensation XL, but I think that's more contrast than this.

HTC One S has Super Amoled Pentile
HTC One X has Super LCD 2
which is better?
which has less consume?

The amoled screen will probably have a better contrast and black-shades, if you use a black wallpaper Super AMOLED is probably also more battery friendly.
But I must say the screen of the One X impressed me in every video I saw, ofcourse that doesn't mean that much but it certainly means something.
The verge said the One X is the best display they've seen on a mobile device period. They said it will be the standard for all other displays to be held against now.
I wonder about any review that just says "it's the best display ever" without mentioning the specific categories it's the "best" in. Color accuracy? Brightness? Black levels? Off-axis viewing? Power consumption? Weight/thickness. Etc etc.
Most cell phone reviewers are guilty of this. TV reviewers are more thorough in this regard. If LCD 2 has black levels and power consumption similar to OLED I'll be impressed. I'm doubtful though. Black levels are huge for me. After owning the galaxy s2 and the galaxy 7.7 I'll never be able to go back to an inferior display.
SLCD 2 has better viewing angles, color accuracy, and white levels than amoled.
Amoled has better black levels.
Also this is full RGB stripe. NOT pentile. Making this the best phone display on the market currently.
yeah and what you seen on the screen seems to be over the glass.. the same effect nokia used with the lumia 800! (i've never seen a 900 so i don't know about that)..
That's just amazing.. I wish they used a smaller screen in order to have a better pixel density, but i guess that's enough
Android central posted a comparison of galaxy nexus and the one x. One x K.O the Pentile display of the nexus.
"The One X's display makes the Galaxy Nexus look like an old yellowed newspaper."
I cannot wait to compare it to the pentile samoled of the galaxy note and rgb samoled plus of the 7.7 for myself.

They mention all of that. Read the review. Colors are accurate, the panel is laminated. Viewing angles are impeccable. The resolution is incredible. You can see it outside in daylight. What do you want?
Anandtech will do actual measurements at some point, most people aren't interested in those.
That's the image comparison from Engadget(hope ok to post that)

After viewing the gorgeous non-PenTile 720p HD display on the One X for a few days, we realized just how difficult it was to revert to the S's qHD Super AMOLED panel. Let's put it this way: it's nearly the same screen as on the Droid RAZR, which comes as a tremendous disappointment to us. While we admit that the colors on the AMOLED display are a bit more saturated, that's all it has going for it. The pixelation is still easily noticeable -- in fact, it was the very first thing that stood out when we turned the S on for the first time. In contrast, the X's S-LCD 2 is definitely one of the nicest screens you can get right now, and there's no doubt it trumps the One S.
hi guys
Check out my youtube channel /staceyraver ....i did a video comparing the screens on the one x and galaxy nexus. There's also a couple of scratch test videos in there if you're interested.
alternatively all the posts are on my blog (with added photographs) at
www.techstace.blogspot.com
Super LCD 2 is apparently better!
When comparing both the screens with an image taken by a DSLR one X display seems to be more crisper and close to the original over more saturated amoled SIII screen, though the camera quality is said to be better in S3
Shreyas.
I have both the Nexus and the One X and the only advantage of the Nexus is the black levels. Imo super LCD has caught up in contrast levels and surpassed SA in viewing angles. The brightness output of SLCD2 kills the Amoled on the Nexus.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
still amoled wins
I compared my One X screen to the galaxy S3 screen. Even though the colors of the HOX are more accurate and the screen is more bright doesn't change the fact that black just isn't black...
Also the S3 screen uses way less power and thus doesn't heat up the phone as bad.
For me the S3 is the winner, can't wait to switch from my HOX to S3 for this reason...

Washed out viewing angle

Can all of you people with "perfect" displays and viewing angles post picture of your device at an angle if you were look at it from a table and other angles.
I DON'T CARE IF YOU LOOK AT IT FROM THE FRONT and say "oh well I look it from the front all the time." I view my device on the table 1/4 time. So this is an issue. Don't get me wrong I love this device.
MINE IS BAD. I know there are threads similar like this but you people NEVER back up your claim of it being perfect and saying "I don't have that issue."

WELL PLEASE POST PICTURES OF A LOT OF ANGLES! PLEASE AS PROOF!
I'm trying to investigate this issue because I'm reading the display on this device is the BEST DISPLAY EVER. I don't believe this is true at all. MKBHD has this issue too. I add this device for a week and I know I have only 15 days before it's too late to get a new one and not a "refurbished" one.

If you perceive it as an issue you might want to go with the next badass $350 off contract device available... This is something that is mentioned in almost EVERY review video I've seen, but I don't read my screen from an angle and don't see it as an "issue".

I've only seen two videos point this out and I hoped it would be a defect. All the others out said this display is "perfect" and so on etc.
I want to see the pictures from the people who claim the "perfect" display and says "I dont have that when I look at mine from an angle."
Cuz I've seen plenty who claims that in just one thread involving this issue. Yeah it's a low priced device, but we all know Google doesn't really make money off this device at all, it's the services your using and the ads you see when your using it that pays them back.
I just want to see the pictures of those who claims their device is perfect.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Reviewers may test extreme viewing angles for comparison but generally evaluate the quality when viewing the display head-on in the manner most people view the device while it's held in normal use. Mind's perfect, but I could not very well use it if held at a 90° angle.
My viewing angles are nothing like that. I have no trouble seeing my screen from those angles.I know you are looking for pictures but unfortunately m n5 is my only camera right now. If i can get some pics I'll post them.
Mine ain't perfect but they seem much better than yours. At least with my eyes, maybe your camera make the things worst ?
I don't have any camera either, but seriously I can see the tiles much better than you, even with extreme angles.

Heh, I wanna say galaxy nexus. Which I also came from as well. Galaxy nexus amoled panel blows chunks next to the n5.
On topic: Since you forced me to sorta care, I got to lookin at the angles. When I got directly up/down/left/right it performs as well as an ips display should with solid color at extreme angles. But on the diagonals of the extremes i.e. (Right/down) I noticed that's when the back light washout would be visible. I suspect it has something to do with any type of polarization that has been applied to the glass.

agreed.
Have you ever noticed how every review tests viewing angles from a straight angle? That's the standard and probably for good reason.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Mine wishes out when I look at it diagonally and off-axis. There's only minimal washing out from the top, bottom, and sides, unlike what you're seeing. I'll try to track down a another camera and take a couple photos to show you.
EDIT: Here you go. As you can see, there's some washing out at extreme angles (mostly from the diagonal), but it's nowhere near as bad as you're experiencing.

Which is why it's bad for viewing on tables like I said. Because your viewing it from diagonal perspective a bit. Left and right and up and down are Barrable. It's not TOOO bad. Of the diagonals were the same I'd be OK with this.
I wanna know if this is a Screen lottery (every device has this but some worst then others), which is why I requested pictures from the "perfect" people. If I see that they are having even a significantly better display compared to mine(I know IPS displays get washed out at angles but mine is HORRIBLE), then I wanna call Google and get a new one and compare those too.
I've yet to be able to compare my Nexus 5 to another. Probably tomorrow I'll go into a T-Mobile or Sprint retailer and compare (hopefully it isn't bright in the room because it's harder to tell the difference).

Stock kernel, no color adjustments. I've never used max brightness on any device. I'm at roughly 1/3 brightness and it's still plenty bright for me. I can try another one at max brightness if you want, but I don't keep it that high personally because it's too bright for my eyes and it also kills the battery.
EDIT: here's max brightness.
No Maxy it's fine thanks. I just wanted to know for sure.

Someone at LG needs to be FIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDA.
Can this "issue" be fixed? Can the angles be improved? I remember reading the Nexus⁴ got some AOSPA Love and it got "fixed" not sure if it was color wise or angle wise or both since I don't own one.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Mine gets quite washed out an angle, but I can still read everything on the screen just fine so it really doesn't bother me. It's a little annoying and unfortunate just to know it's like this (especially since my N7 2013's IPS screen is absolutely perfect even at the most extreme angles), but it really has no effect on my usage of the device.
Seems extreme to wish for someone to lose their job over this. If this is affecting you enough to feel that strongly about it, perhaps a different device would serve you better.

My point in posting those photos was to show that it's really not that bad at all, and it actually looks worse in the photos that it does in person. To suggest that someone should lose their livelihood over this non-issue is utterly ridiculous because this screen on this phone is pretty awesome. And I'm picky about displays.

Is the moto g good enough for my needs?

I currently have a galaxy note 2 and i can't say i dont like it but it's just not for me.. Even though i got a large hand (still can't reach the end of the phone using one hand though). I usually go out riding my bicycle quite often and the note 2 feels too heavy in my pockets, i can't even sit without taking the phone out of my pocket which gets very annoying. I really liked watching movies and all on my note 2 but i probably don't feel like getting a Samsung phone again because of the Hardware home buttons.
Anyway the moto g is getting sold for 245$ here, and it looks nice and light so i wonder if it's worth the price here? Or are there any phones that are going to meet my needs? (lasts a day of light or medium use and is easy to carry)
Thanks in advance.
Buy it

I can surely recommend this phone.
Only drawback can be the fixed memory.
For me this is not an issue. But it might be an issue for others.
Although I am not a movie watcher on phones, the MotoG is pretty good at it.
I find the scrolling in app like Facebook is even better than note 3. But the camera is really lousy even comparing to iPhone 4. So think twice if you take a lot of photos with your phone.

I take pictures of essays and other school related things, and that's pretty much it. Are words clear if you zoom after taking the pictures?
And also is the 245$ price reasonable? Because its cheaper in other countries
Absolutely clear for photos of notes. That's what I use it for precisely. Otherwise the camera is decent at best. 245 bucks is still very much worth. In India it's about 220$ or so for 16 gigs. And I'd say that's a crazy deal. Coming from a 600$ One X, all the more sweeter.

Nope, there's virtually no competition at that price point. You could find a Nexus 4 somewhere but that would be at least 100$ costlier.

I have been using the moto g for almost a month and while it does and will consistently meet your requirement of 'a day of moderate usage', it's weight is slightly on the bulkier side. That said, once you get used to its weight, it is a pure steal at the price points it is being sold at.
PS: psst, update to kitkat, enable developer options, toggle to Art and also try the Google now launcher in it. May have to download the package from external sources. Epic

The Note 2 is better.. but if it's too big then get the Moto G i guess.
Have you tried getting used to the Note 2 size anyways? I had a 3.5" phone to a 4.5" phone and the 4.5" felt too big.
A few weeks passed and now i'm used to it, in fact i'm never going to go under 4.5" in my next purchase.
I switched from a Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Moto G is better for my needs, smaller, actually snappier in general, better battery life, feels like much better build quality for a much cheaper phone, and the only thing I missed from the S4 is OTG USB but update fixed that! So even if you are needed space for films ect, wack them on a USB and buy a cheap small cable and you've got more storage when needed!
You won't be disappointed!

@SamsungAdmire it was never about getting used to the size, i do find anything smaller than the note 2 small but the note 2 doesn't fit me even though i really want to use it.. It's just too heavy and hard to carry around while cycling. The moto g seems like the phone for me.
Thanks everyone! I guess I'll just get it

I take pictures of essays and other school related things, and that's pretty much it. Are words clear if you zoom after taking the pictures?
And also is the 245$ price reasonable? Because its cheaper in other countries

Sorry for OT!
But, that's exactly the subject that I'm studying right now. Computer graphics xD

Sorry guys but now I'm also considering the nexus 5, i know if bigger than the moto g but is it also easier to carry?
Thanks
If you are spoiled by the battery life of the note, then you will love the Moto G. Just as smooth (maybe smoother) and great screen quality. biggest sacrifice is the camera so that part is up to you.
I came from a Note 3 and haven't missed it since (ok maybe just multi window lol)
Sent from my XT1032 using Tapatalk
imo
I think you need to sell your Note II and buy Moto G together with a tablet (nexus 7 maybe?) so you can enjoy also watching movies
OK i know I'm getting really annoying but how is the moto g for people with large hands? I have a really large hand, and the mobile store is like an hour away and I'm tacky busy atm
Thanks! Abs dirty fit the inconvenience

There was a time where 4.5 inch screen was considered too big for a lot of people. I adapted really quickly from my old Note 3 and currently am comfortable with a compact phone. But your milage will vary

Buy a galaxy camera and if your nexus 5 is running a custom kernel tune your display

i got it just to use the camera actually, but samsungs software so pisses me off sometimes that i ended up using my n4 as a spare camera instead, and my s4 has been just laying around the last half year.

best is to wait for the next nexus or else get a sony device they are the best in camera
I second shhbz here - wait for the next Nexus or get a Sony.
I don't find that Nexus 5 camera that bad though - sure, its not the best in the world, but it takes pretty good shots for what it is.
You could also consider a Samsung Galaxy K Zoom. The LG G3 is not a bad cameraphone either,
The camera is a lot better IMO with HDR. You aren't buying a $600 phone so they cut the quality a bit but honestly the camera is the only thing that feels inferior on this phone and even then it can be tweaked a bit and runs great.
However the screen is good. I find Samsung washes out their screens with overly bright colors. The only complaint I have is the contrast in full sunlight but the full brightness makes up for that OK.

So i shouldn't?
G3 and xperia z1 out of budget.. Nexus is approximately 150$ expensive in India than the original price.. So not worth waiting for next nexus
How about a oppo n1 with the 360° 13mp camera for great selfies?

Shoot get the Nexus 5. You won't be disappointed.

Nothing to be confused about
If u want better camera and battery go for s4
If u want fast updates and pure android skin go for n5.
Depends entirely upon ur priorities
I was there. Got n5. Hate about camera and battery life. Switched to s4 and flashed GPE rom. Camera is nice and battery life is infinity with the battery kit, but really missed the speed of the nexus 5. Now i switched back to n5, with elemental x, undervolted, underclocked to 1.7ghz. Battery life is improved significantly and camera is much better now on 4.4.4. Camera on my first nexus 5 with older rom gave me a headache, focusing and taking a picture was slow, but not anymore.

I finally decided to stick with nexus 5 after doing many camera comparisons with the s4, I think nexus 5 has a better and more reliable camera.. S4 is totally unusable indoors even with perfect lighting.. Outdoors there are details, but colors are crap.. Saturated yet extremely unsharp display.. Nexus 5's crisp, sharp and almost near accurate lcd display beats the crap out of s4's display.. What's better with s4, just a little longer battery and better speakers..
In a mall while testing cameras,in first picture, s4 has a warmer photo, unrealistic, crap details, blurry, on the other hand nexus 5, better color accuracy, slightly better details, a bit steady (Now i know what's OIS is capable of).. Overall nexus 5 takes much better photos..

Nexus 5s are known to have a bit of a warm display, but compared to the s4 it still better, the s4 just brightens the colors to make the display look crisper

It can be tweaked with kernels and colour profiles.

Actually Samsung used SAMOLED panels not LCD. That's why it looks oversaturated. Completely different screen technology

The only thing that I wish it had was image stabilization and an AMOLED screen but for 399$, it's still amazing. Glad they decided to go with the SD card this year. I love the 5.7 inch screen and would even go with 6 inch, but 5.7 puts it at note 4 competition. Motorola should have put the 3600mah battery in both phones, but thank goodness there's a quick charge

I have read that the Moto X Play, despite having a 64-bit SoC, has 32-bit Android.
It's the same for the Moto G, with Google's argument being that 64-bit would be too heavy for a device with 1 GB RAM. But the Moto X Play has 2 GB.
Is this true, and what would be the impact of not having 64-bit Android?

It is running 32-bit Android. Maybe when Android M comes it, Moto may release a 64 bit version
When do new phones usually get their first root kit / ROM?
I've never bought a phone that just came out before, so I'm always used to using ROMS that are customed to my liking. Using vanilla Android is so uncomfortable.
Hey everyone
Excited to get this phone later this year. I am coming from Nexus 4, so I'm in search of a better battery life kind of device, and seems like MXP with the 3600 mAh battery might just get me satisfied!

It'll definitely last you the whole day.
May I ask you (that have the Moto X as a daily driver) what do you think about the quality of the plastic frame?
For me it was kind of a let down when I knew it wasn't metallic. For now it's the only thing make me esitate... (also the 2GB of ram actually )

The plastic frame on the X Play doesn't feel cheap to me. Coming from a Galaxy S6, the Moto X Play feels great.
The only part that feels cheap is the power button. It's loose. It moves up and down slightly when you touch it and it rattles if you shake the phone.
The rest of the build is very solid though. Great feel in the hand.
Does it support Miracast or MHL/Hdmi?
Sent from my GT-I9295 using Tapatalk
perfect
Miracast support is there - I'm currently looking at the XDA app through my TV screen.
With that said, I don't think the Motorola has any support for a wired HDMI connection, unfortunately.

2014 vs Play
I'm actually thinking about replacing my old Galaxy Nexus but I'm wondering about picking 2014 MotoX or this new Moto X Play.
What do you think could be the best choice?
thanks!

I'm considering the same phones, the price is almost the same now...
Moto X 2014 :
Better Build quality (it's awesome)
more compact
Amoled Display (but that's depend if you like it or not)
IR sensors for active display
Moto X Play:
Huuuuge battery (the one on the 2014 is pathetic)
better camera
bigger screen (but bigger phone overall)
SD expansion

You got the point!
I think Amoled displays can really benefit of active display: just the lit pixels are on.
But I can't stand active display's pulsing behaviour of "hey, you git a notification 30 seconds ago and you didn't check it!"
I'm perplexed about how bigger the Play is! Actually the screen/overall size ratio is a little bit better, isn't it?
And then the hardest point: price! Not the stock price but the actual street price you can find: moto X play seems to be cheaper, for what you get, after all.
I'm actually just surprised there seems to be zero development so far. The only recovery we have is from the osprey (2015 G), and thus we have root. I know this isn't released in the US, but didn't think most devs were from there honestly. The G has a ton in comparison! Lol. So eager for a kernel that maximizes efficiency while also eliminating lag.

This phone isn't widely available and it's an "in-between" model. Most people will either be on a budget and opt for the G or want the best specs and opt for the X Style.
For me, the one and only real selling point of this phone was the battery. I think most power users are used to charging part way through the day and don't really look at battery size as a big selling feature.
It also doesn't help that reviews haven't painted this "massive" battery in a good light. And they're not wrong. I am able to get about 20% more battery life out of this 3630mAh battery than several other phones I've had with batteries in the 2400-2700mAh range. More battery is good, but I gave up a lot of stuff for a phone that is less fluid and missing sensors just for a meager boost in battery life.
Honestly, if I could find someone to take my Moto X Play off my hands, I'd gladly go back to the Moto G. Comparable battery life, better performance, and tons of ROM/modding support.

The size of the battery is undeniable. It is ultimately up to the software you're running on the phone. I have high hopes for the future of the Moto X Play once it's availability becomes more widespread.
