Hmm...windows or android - General Questions and Answers

Hey guys
I'm currently rocking a note 3 as per my signature.
As you can see in my signature that I've been using Android phones for the past years...
My girlfriend wants my note 3 so I decided that I would give it to her. Now I need a phone...I'm trying to decide if I should go android or windows
I understand windows phones aren't as customizable and not many apps, however lately I haven't been using that many apps.
My general usage is usually Web browsing, texting, phone calls, music and YouTube
If I go windows I would get the Nokia lumia 1020 as I would like the 41MP camera as it would benefit me for my day to day job.
If I go back to android I would get the nexus 5 or maybe another note 3 but I haven't used spen or any of the features that the note 3 has to offer, so that would be a waste of money
Please help me to decide
Thanks xda!

For browsing, texting, phone calls and entertainment purpose you can go for a Windows phone. There are good apps as well in Windows phone store but they are not so many. And if you aren't so crazy about app use than there is no major difference in using Windows phone or Android.
Secondly if you are a Android lover than you should go for Nexus 5 Smartphone Otherwise Windows phone will be fine. Nexus devices have more advantage with latest android updates at earliest and more support for Google integrated services.
Personally I will recommend you Windows phone in this case.

Well.....a windows mobile phone is fine, but in my opinion, it's not that easy to use as any android phone, although windows o.s. has been much easier to use over the years (you now don't have to use both hands to e.g. make a call), but I'd recommend you to get an android phone, because it's much easier to use and, of course, the google play store has millions of apps and it's growing every single day....

yeah most likely for all the reasons you want would be a windows phone, your not going to get as much apps as the note 3 though, you will miss it

I personally think microsoft is a dinosaur and they need to stick to what they are good at - NOT Phones or Phablets - and improve what they ARE good at

if you use your phone to browse, listen to music, watch videos, then it's good enough windows phone .. but for all other Android only!

Honestly, in your opinion, you sounded like you've already made up your mind! Go for the basic functions that you usually use and of course, that 41MP camera too.

Coming back from iPhone. Need help catching up. Too many phones!!!

For the past three years now I’ve been using the iPhone. Now with the high prices in Europe for iPhone 4, and since my iPhone 3G broke, I’m looking to buy a Windows Mobile or Android phone.
One of the advantages with the iPhone was that whenever Apple released a new firmware, I could upgrade to it immediately. I remember the old days with Windows Mobile smart phones, when Microsoft release a new version of Windows Mobile I had to wait for the company that sold the phone, to release a new firmware based on the new mobile OS from Microsoft. I couldn’t just download it from Microsoft and install it, as I can do with Apple and the iPhone.
I liked messing around with my Windows Mobile phone, upgrading, installing custom roms, 3rd party apps, etc. I liked the flexibility.
Now I’m looking into going back to Windows Mobile, or Android (never used it) and the options at htc.com are simply overwhelming. Too many phones! That’s why I need your help.
What should I buy? I need flexibility. I need to be able to mess with the phone, customize it, install GPS apps, office apps, play music; videos connect it to my car and listen to the music through Bluetooth, take video and photos. You know all the usual things you do with a phone. I’ll have to have flash, watch YouTube videos, good battery life and good looks.
Anyway, I would really like some advice on which Windows Mobile or Android phone to buy, and why.
Thanks.
hahahahahahaha android all the way ..get a galaxy s i have a nexus one rooted with cyn6 .pretty sick what you can do with android.there is not a phone on earth that just does it like nexus .my advice get android all the way

[Discussion] Why did you make the jump to Android?

So here is my question..
What made you jump to the Android platform?
What phone did you come from?
What was wrong?
Why?
For me: I had used 3 iPhones, (3GS, 4, 4S). After close to a year with the iPhone I saw how boring it was to see the icons. Over and over again.
Then I deceided to get the latest of android at the time. The Galaxy Nexus with 4.0  But comming from an iPhone, I missed the quantity and the quality of the apps. But soon I got used to it.
My future of android phones, HTC One X, Galaxy Note and the S4.
So far my impressions are very good on Android but when I used to jailbreak my iPhone the quality of Cydia tweaks over the 'mods' and ROMs for Android devices.
I hope people find this useful.

I'm come from Bada with a Samsung Wave, there were a lot of good things, but the store was too poor with apps... I was searching an Android phone (don't like the narrow-minded of Apple), so I search a phone without Phone bill, the phones are very expensive, but after reading a lot review, I choose a Galaxy Nexus for $420

Sorry for my bad English, I'm French
I had all the iPhones ever made I moved to android cause of big screen and I wanted to try something different but as of now I only have one gripe its the fact I can't get my contacts off itunes .

I come from symbian, android and the quality is exceptional by comparison, are more than satisfied!
Android
I've always been a fan of various Linux distros so I have a better understanding of whats going on inside my HTC One V phone (now with CM 10.1 ) so I've always thought Android was the way to go. Most Linux based OS/apps usually have an awesome community (like xda dev) to help with any problems that may pop up.
I came to Android from Symbian OS, I had Nokia 5230 for 3 years before, and I got bored of it's slow performance, and low RAM, so I decided to upgrade it to Samsung Galaxy S3, which was a great step I think, and I learned many things with my Samsung, so now I am not that stupid beginner on Android which I was before.
because its AWESOME!
i switched form IOS because android makes me feel FREE. Im cant just change "almost" everything... I can change EVERYTHING!
I had a maxx mobile which is a local company
it was such a pathetic phone , with its bad keypad , small screen , no apps nothing
Later I read about android os in news and about so many applications and based on Linux ( using linux on pc for long time )
it was then I wanted to buy an android phone
Hence the jump

I switched because I felt there weren't as many cool apps with the iPhone as there are with androids. I haven't missed my iPhone yet.
Because symbian is dead.
Because the only alternative at the time was iOS. Windows looked too ugly and didn't function how i wanted it to.
I came from a winmo 6.5 HTC HD2. (tmobile nl branded one, so I couldnt even get the newest firmware to flash android onto it.) Eventually, the marketplace was shut down. Which wasnt that big of a problem if you have no issue with piracy. But then the microphone broke, and I decided it was time for a new phone.
And Android gave me choices, iOS doesn't. So there was never any real 'choice', which is fine I'm perfectly happy with Android.
So it became the s3 (no MicroSD = no buy. So HTC ONE was as little of an option as the iPhone. )
Now eagerly awaiting the Note 3.

Htc touch pro. Because the windows mobile is dying and less application makes me feel its a boring system .no playful games such some game loft game in android now! But some how I still miss it .cause it can make video call by network ,not video chat in application now.
Android
When the time came to make a choice, I chose the Android platform.
Many of the people I knew at the time that were using the Windows platform had many complaints and problems.
I knew little about the iOS phones, but I'm happy I chose Android.
I've had zero problems!

I myself was sick of iOS and pretty much having to have the new phone to run the new versions of the apps, which was total bs, not to mention the whole thing just started freezing up after awhile just cause it was 'old', I would literally have to throw it on the ground (carpeted) then reboot it just to get it running again for a few minutes. Never seen that problem with android, hell my boyfriend was running s2 up until a month or two ago when he got the htc one, not once did I see it lockup.

If you backup to icloud you can export your contact list as a Vcard and import it on your new phone easy... Thats what I did, I had the 3gs and 4s and was just tired of chasing the next jailbreak.
I love my new HTC One!

"Jumped" to Android because it's open source, Google owns it, I can do whatever I want with it ( Nexus 4 ), etc...
iOS devices are not choice, thay never was, never will.
Switched from "dumbphone" Sony Ericsson W610i
I came from the ios zone i switched to android because upgeading on ios is a pain :l

WebOS
I switched from WebOS (Palm). I enjoyed the phone Palm Pre+, but the OS was severely limited and did not catch on as HP had hoped it would. It was small, fast (for it's time) and had good storage 16gb. It is still my MP3 player, why buy an apple product if you have something that works.
From 2003 onwards I was using Symbian from s60v2 to Anna till 2009, I was very used to Symbian as it also supported off market apps of java and sis /sisx(side load), I was well aware of all the tricks in that OS. But Nokia has never changed it's interface.
Then I switch to Android seeing no development is going in Symbian OS and Nokia people are migrating to MS

HTC Windows Phone 8X Review

I got the HTC windows phone 8x and have been using it for 2 weeks now and all of my thoughts and opinion are my own and I am not sponsored by Verizon or HTC. When I first got the device it felt like any other phone other new phone you would get but the instant i turned it on i knew it was going to be different. I am saying this coming from the Galaxy Note 2 running touchwiz over android jelly bean. The feature that i enjoyed the most was the fact that your homescreen will alway keep you updated with the latest news, social, scores, and ect. The fact that you don’t have to launch an app just to see the same info you would see on a home screen on windows 8 is a nice perk. The hardware was really nice build solid no lag while using the device and its kind of nice the fact that you can buy this phone in many different colors is a nice little addition. The camera on the htc 8x is an average 8mp camera take subpar pictures in low light but in good lighting conditions it takes above average pics. Also the Verizon version of the HTC 8X does get an exclusive feature of wireless charging. The app selection on windows phone is not yet to par with the Apple Store or Android. Many large app developers apps are not yet on Windows phone but that shouldn't make you not buy a windows phone. The reason for that is the fact that many smaller developers create knockoffs of the real app like theres a knock off of YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. From my time with the phone I have thought that this phone is a great phone for someone just coming into the smartphone arena or someone who is looking to switch os’s. The phone is selling for free with a 2-year contract with Verizon.
Let me know what you think about this device and let me know if you have a windows phone and if you enjoy it. Thank you for your time and if you want to see more reviews check me out on YouTube just search for Cory Jansen. Also follow me on twitter at cjtechcraz

Am I mad?

I've been an Android user for the best part of 5 years, seeing a steady improvement of OS and supporting apps. While the Galaxy Range has got better and better.
I'm currently using a Galaxy S4, but for whatever reason i'm being drawn towards the Nokia Lumia 1020. My partner wants one because "it's a Nokia" while I'm interested because of the Camera. I'm a DSLR user so this isn't for instagramin' me breakfast, it's to capture great photos at concerts and videos and general stuff which I plan to blog up. My other reasoning is I'm very fond of my Surface Pro, which is again a Windows device and I can't put it down, so am I mad? Will having a Windows phone have any real benefit with a Surface?
My greatest concern is the store that is less than lacking from my initial research with what i'd call basic apps are missing, youtube, twitter to name but a few. This concerns me, but being a window phone n00b you smart people maybe able to enlighten me to alternative options which don't come from the origin of the app.
I suppose what I'm really asking is did you switch from an Android and what did you miss and what can you not live without since you switched.
My current plan is to get a 1020, tether it to my surface and use windows 8 pro instead of apps on the phone and use the phone for texts calls and the camera.
Any and all help welcome.
My concern also are the lack off apps on windows phones vs the enormous google play store.
But those apps you mentioned as an example (youtube, twitter) are available. Just as facebook, skype, wordfeud etc are.
I dont have a windows phone, but these apps are listed when I search the windows phone app store online.
Most are not from the website makers with some being rubbish or nothing more than a front end to the mobile version. This is one of my concerns as a lot are not very good or cost money and still aren't very good.

Twitter is baked into the OS, but there is an official version (at least there is for WP 7.8). There are a number of third party apps for things like Youtube and Instagram that are a lot better than you'd think. Try Metrotube or Supertube apps for Youtube.

[Q] Nokia Lumia 1320

Hey,
My contract is ending in a month or so, and it's time to search for a new phone. To be honest, I'm not interested in "Flag Ships", I just want a bigger phone and something different, I'm a bit bored of Android.
Right now I have an LG Optimus L5. (Phones in Serbia are crazy expensive, e.g. S5 here is 800 USD on contract.)
And then I saw the Nokia Lumia 1320, it came out this year it's affordable, it has a big screen and it looks awesome. So I wanted to see if any of you, have used this phone, and I'd love to hear your input about it. Or if you have a suggestion on a different device, go for it. (Devices I can get are listed in the end)
Note, I'm not looking to play heavy games on it, I have a Nexus 7 for that sort of thing. I need the phone to do 7 things, call & sms, twitter, internet browser, wifi hotspot, play music, and some light games to kill time in transit.
Phones that I was offered for my contract:
Lumia 1320
Lumia 630
LG L80
Samsung Galaxy Core 2
Sony Experia M2
Also, if I accidently posted in the wrong section, Mods please don't delete the thread. I'm kind of new here.
Go for the Galaxy Core 2 mate, it seems the best one from the offered ones

To be honest, I like android and I have an android tablet (Nexus7) which I'm using right now. And I've been using Android since v1.6. But as my post said I'd could use a change. I am aware that WP has only a few good apps in the store, but I don't need anything else than the basic most common apps like Twitter and Deezer. Secondly, I absolutely do not want to spend more money on a better android phone or a so called "flagship".
Indeed the L5 was a disappointment, in every possible way starting from the screen right down to the performance. But is not the reason for my wish to switch.
Probably the biggest issue with Windows Phone 8.1 is the availability of apps and games. But it's not something that concerns me on such a level that I would give up on buying it. I also forgot to mention that I like the build quality of the Lumia device(s).
