Hi Guys.
I need help in buying a new phone. I am using a Hyundai A 200 with winmo 5 and i have'nt had any problems with it except for its massive size and low battery life. I wanna go for a new smartphone so after a long research and review reading decided to go either with HTC, Samsung and Motorola. The devices i was satisfied with were HTC HD2, Samsung I8000 OMNIA 2 and Motorola Milestone (DROID).
Price wise HTC HD2 - 28k, Samsung Omnia 2 - 28k and Moto Milestone - 27.5k [Am from India].
A few days ago i visited a mobile shop for a hands on approach to clear my doubts and finally decide. I Liked all the three devices but obviously sided with the HTC HD2. Things that actually blowed my brains were the sheer screen size, responsiveness, capacitive touch screen, 1Ghz Processor & SENSE... Though the Touchwiz interface of Samsung and Android Of Moto were Good but HTC Hd2 was just awesome. It was when i came home and started reading reviews of HD2 in-depth that i realized its camera had a pinkish hue, the device hung up (getting up from sleep mode) etc, that was disappointing.
I dont wanna spend 34k and end up with a laggy phone. I also read that the codec support in OMNIA 2 was way better than in HTC HD2 (not and issue cos I can always convert it to suppored formats ). The guy from the mobile shop told me android sucked esp since file transfers over bluetooth were'nt possible (but later i read that rooting made that possible), and my friends told me that Applications couldn be installed on the SD card in android but i read in the forums yesterday that an app "app2sd" or something similar made this possible. I am open to both Win Mo and Android.
So now am really confused I want to know if the HTC HD2 has these flaws and if custom ROM's covered these flaws? Should I go for HTC or SAMSUNG or MOTO? Which one is really worth the money?
Am gonna use the device for reading e-books & lotsa documents (esp Word and excel files), listen to music and watch a few videos, Gaming (occasionally), as a portable camera and video recorder (shots are gonna be indoors mostly so if someone could give me the results of indoor shots it would be really appreciable) and calls, texts and mails, of course!
I also noticed the poll results for the Best HTC device of 2009 and HTC HD2 bags 46.90%
Everything is pointing toward HTC HD2, so if I get a positive outlook for owners i would go ahead with it or i have to look into the alternatives. so, Please do update me with your suggestions and views.
Also do let me know if I should consider some other device or wait for another few months if any better device is in the making
Thank you in advance.
Send me 20k U.S. and I'll hook you up with any phone you want, ha ha.
Nah, just messin.
Anyways, go with Android, man. I would be so pissed moving from Android to winmo. I like my apps too damn much. I think I'm breaking down and getting a nexus one. Even after I swore I'd never get anything without a physical keyboard again. =[
If you gonna be using Word and excel files alot then you probably want windows mobile...go with the hd2 and its suppose to be getting windows phone 7, which is suppose to be alot better than WM or thats what i hear...
Go for Leo definitely!
Thank You
Thank you so much for your suggestions and prompt replies guys....
Still i read that HD2 in plagued with software lags, Hang ups, and other random issues.... any solutions for these issues??? are they hardware related or software related??? what about the pink hue bug in the photos???

Android's still got a lota snags right or thats what i understood after reading a lot of posts in this forum. Its Open source so we can expect nothing but the best and comparing it to the i phone or winmo doesnt do it any justice... Which is the better phone for the Android platform??? I was thinking of Se Xperia X10 or HTC Legend..... But after going through XperiaX10's wishlist i have second thoughts....
The Nexus is an awesome android device...and I don't have any snags that can't be tweeked
wow all the prices are very high.. you say HD2 cost still 34K which is circa 5900HKD here in Hong Kong the HD2 goes for 24.5K (4200HKD)
Anyhow as previously some mentioned if you need to sync with your PC and with Microsoft outlook for your PIM WM is the best.
Until now I can’t really see the advantages of Android over WM and especially Motorola which has not much devices on the market therefore it will be difficult to get support even here.
For my opinion it comes down to HD2 or Samsung. Between them I would choose HD2. However again for my opinion paying 34K for device that will not get an official upgrade is far too high.. I hope you guys going to not kill me but what is the price for Iphone???

I got a cofirmation mail from my phone retailer that the price is actually 28 k and not 36 k as mentioned in their site....
Moto is out of my mind too... HTC legend and se Xperia x10 were taken up in favor of android but still HD2 kicks butt when it comes to screen size....
Iphone 3GS 32 GB is 39 k here....
Pink Hue camera issue...
i read in a lot of forums that the hdt hd2 is plagued by a pink hue in the pictures taken with its camera and few say that its a hardware issue and others say its a software issue any ideas on this???? in the support page of HTC this update [Update for HTC HD2 – Digital Picture Enhancement
This update for HTC HD2 ensures every picture is captured in the clearest digital quality. The HTC HD2 and its twin LED flash will take beautiful pictures so you can cherish your memories forever] is available is this for the correction of pink hue????
Hey guys, my dad is looking for a new phone. He currently has a 3 year old HTC Herald(A beaten up, broken touch screen, piece of ****) and seriously wants to have a replacement. He loves photography(Always tries to learn new things about his DSLR and improves his photography) so wants a phone that has a good camera. He wants a nice capacitive touch screen with e-mail(G-mail push) and facebook integration and GPS(With maps as well as map tracking) and perhaps some decent time-killer games. Nokia N8 costs about 22-24k INR here and sounds perfect for his needs, his other opinion was Dell Streak but it is about 34k INR plus its future of having gingerbread seems weak. Desire HD/Z are not available here plus they might be quite expensive when they make it here. I got a Desire and he doesn't want to have the same phone(Not that he found it to be bad, but he doesn't want to copy anyone. Plus camera on Desire is something he doesn't like(Not that I do)).
What do you think?
This is a matter of preference and I cant say much about the actual phone BUT after using android symbian just doesn't cut it anymore. But again this is only my opinion.
Agree with Daml...if you want to have also a GPS and maps, what is better than Android? I would stick with google OS instead of Symbian...
My GF has the N97 mini & was looking at N8 as hates the N97s Horrid UI, unfortunatly N8 is not a lot better.
Trying to move her to Android as far better OS than Nokia's bodged efforts at making Symbian touch friendly.
WM5 was better than OS on her N97 mini.
the n8 is a brick.
i played with thae phone. Symbian is wack in my opinion.
Well what would you guys suggest?
My wife has the N8. She likes it. It seems like a solid phone and hasn't given her any problems. Battery life is average, nowhere near her old phone, E71. She chose the N8 because of the ease of migration and the familiarity and she wanted a great camera. I forget where I read it, but the tagline was Nokia made a great camera with cell phone capabilities. It seems to be true. The Ovi Store and Ovi Maps are pretty good.
I can't directly compare with Android though. I prefer winmo and only boot to android for specific tasks or some game play.
Found migration using the Nokia transfer a long way from perfect.
The camera & build are only plus points, OS is simply a pathetic effort for aimed market & price.
Don't ask people on XDA about a Nokia device. You will only get troll and false answers. The only minus about the N8 is the application selection. Buy one to open the eyes of developers.
Seems like this post has been here for almost 2 weeks now so not sure if u have bought ur dad his phone yet.
However, i would disagree with the comments of people above me.
1) What is so bad about symbian^3? i agree that symbian1 sucked due to the inconsistent one and two touch to enter thing but symbian 3 has no such problems at all.
2) n8 offers alot more than just a 12Mp camera! It records in 720p HD, has active noice cancellation.
3) What other phones has a HDMI output? after taking pictures u can even just hook the phone up to a tv
4) I agree that there arent that many games yet, but it already has more than 10 HD games already so far and it's only been about 2 months. EA games are even backing the n8 symbian 3 by creating HD games for them!
hmm what else, i guess it does sell itself with the casing etc. I blive the top andriod atm is samsung galaxy s? The screen is nice indeed, but it has no flash and only 5mp camera, so night pictures are totally out of the picture. but yea try it before buying it! It's a really good phone i reckon, love the GPS on it too. oh and also not to mention the photo editing software that it comes with!

oh and btw, i migrated from my n86 to n8 without any problems. All my stuff got transfered over perfectly!
Yeh files migrated after afew attempts but sms dates are changed to date of the transfer which is a bit pathetic.
Had an issue with Thai font turning to squares after transfer, not good as both Nokia devices are Asian market & support Asian fonts so the transfer software appears to have an issue with this !
More customization of transfer options would be good too.
For price & Nokias long running in mobile market I would expect a lot more, the OS is about 3 years behind the compition ! My old WM2003se HTC Magician with Resco Photo Viewer makes an N97 mini photo viewer look completely pathetic, put it next to an iphone or WM6.5.3 OS & it looks like a 1st year students software project.
I'm not a nokia/symbian fan BUT, according with your dad's purposes, i think the N8 sounds exactly like the phone you're looking for.

will the uma app below work on the NOKIA N8 does any one know .I am thinking of buying one ..thanks
"T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling app has finally been hacked to work on Google Nexus One. If you are a Nexus One owner on T-Mobile, then you can install this hacked app and make Wi-Fi calls without any pertinent issues. However the installation instructions of this hack are still a bit of a task for novices, as it requires you to flash kernels and libraries before planting the APK file. "

I have both a premium android device (mytouch 4g with froyo) and N8. Although it comes down to individual preference, I prefer the android device. The UI is much more user friendly and smooth, theres actually a portrait qwerty keyboard available. The widgets are also much more customisable and easier to use. Additionally, the apps make the android device much more favourable. As a medical student, I find a plethora of medical apps available on Android (almost as many as the Iphone), and even otherwise there are a lot more apps available to make it feel like a true smartphone. It's also the little things that matter, such as the fact that the Android phone automatically syncs your contacts with facebook and twitter profiles of your friends, whereas the N8 does not appear to have this capability.
Admittedly the N8 feels like a lot more sturdy device (has gorilla glass and aluminised body), but I got it largely because of the availability of Ovi Maps (although I like Google Maps, I don't like the idea of needing a data connection everytime I go outside and need it). One other thing is that the N8 is a pentaband 3g device, meaning it would work on 3g networks in virtually every country and with every provider, although to my knowledge there is no such android device. This would be esp useful if you travel a lot (like me). This is something I personally think the people at Nokia should have actually bothered to mention when marketing the device. I mainly keep the N8 to listen to music, and for when I go overseas, but it is not my main device.
Overall, I'd definitely say go with the android device (esp. as the mytouch 4g is a great device).
it's up to you , but i think HTC is better!
Not in the camera department. If you want a camera phone look at samsung, nokia or sony's selection.

Hi everyone, i have a couple of questions, now im in no way a troll or anything but i was thinking to switchin to wp, im with android at the moment i have a galaxy note.
Basically i just wanted to know what does wp 7.8 or even the upcoming wp8 devices have thats different to say an android or ios phone? I have no experience whatsoever with wp and would just like to know why you as users love your devices, ive seen the videos of the nokia 920 on youtube and it looks absolutely amazing, the reason i would like to switch is probably the fluidity of the os but other than that is there much else a reason to swap, even if someone could post a link as to reasons why wp is a good os that would be great, once again im not a troll i just have no clue about the operating system at all, i was curious about broadening my horizons abit many thanks if anyone can enlighten me

Obvious troll is obvious.
And three question marks is rude.
I just said i werent trolling are u stupid???
Its people like u who make xda such a nasty place to be in, i had a genuine question cos i was seriously thinkin bout switchin from android to wp, so i say to u to stop being so paranoid bout trolling when someone asks a genuine question oh and stop spamming my post with useless comments, if u thought i was a troll then why bother using ur energy and time to post in the thread, ur the troll causing needless arguements

Your question would be better asked in the WP8 forum. No need to beat this horse.
You watched the videos , you should have a pretty good understanding of the OS. What you see is exactly all there is to it, nothing more.

The reason why i love my Windows Phone is the design, the minimalistic design which is "modern" since 1950 till today that style is modern like black and white clothes. the second thing is that i dont need so much apps for every possible thing. i dont need to know how my wp7 works to manage it to work for months.
3rd what i love is the durability, i switch my wp7 only off if i have a new rom (that happens maybe once a year ). In wp7 you dont need to feel that your device uses you, you have the full control over the functions what your device can do for you. you dont need to bother if the device is gonna shut off at any time, no bother about slowdowns or maybe even forcing to restart like i saw multiple times on my brothers stock HTC evo 3D.
and the 4th are the live tiles, you spend way less time customizing and arranging your live tiles then on android the look and feel.
5th. my battery last now in my device over one day and 10 hours, and my battery is 1 year and 3 months old. and only 1500mAh! the lumia 920 has 2000mAh, just imagine what can be done with it. and how long it lasts.
6st. wireless sync with my pc, all my videos and pictures get synced automatic if my device is charging anywhere in my house.
7th. the people hub, there i have all the news from twitter, facebook, windows live, and linked in in one "app" that doesnt have a loading, if you have internet it download instantly the news if you switch to the "news" tab in the people hub.
8th. i love the overall simplicity of wp7, no bunch of setting for each app, instead microsoft has found the middle way, settings for all apps together. and i think it is a good way despite users say "i need a seperate volume ringtone and seperate volum for sms" you use your device or you dont use it you have volume turned on or off. thats what i need, nothing in between.
9th. i love the bunch of new developers with new app and functions like the official FC Bayern football app, if i'm not at home it send me an instant notification about goals, and the result is on the live tile, it is visible even without opening the app, thats only one example of apps that i like (instant news and info without opening app) - so to say "on the go"
10th. a wp7 has not every of my friends. i dont like mainstream to much.
11th. reason why i love windows phone 7 or 8 or 7.8 is that making apps for them is really easy (i heard from various developers that developing for iOS is a pain in the ass), with a few books and tutorials and some practice everybody can make an app, as an student you get an free dev center account where you can publish your apps and even earn money on them.
12th. reason is i'am 24h online, so i get emails instantly, news about my buddys... my brohter turn its wifi off on its Android HTC EVO 3D because he says it drains its battery... i dont like that. if it is a smartphone let it be a smartphone 24h not only 2h daily.
and WP7 is truly a smartphone, it makes my life easier, much.

1. The main strength is its UI. Even after almost two years of ownership, I still get amazed watching smooth animations on my phone. It simply never ages, never slows down. Even typing on its keyboard feels quite amazing.
2. Second biggest strength is its exclusive apps. For example, Nokia Drive served me many times and quite beautifully. Nokia Group Shots is extremely handy and blows my friends away. Photosynth is just mindblowing (now available on iOS as well)! MS Office is quite useful. My phone quite easily connects to all kinds of WiFi networks with proxy settings, no hassles at all! Xbox avatar (see my xda avatar) is just so cute and achievements add a new dimension to games.
In a small summary, it's some small things which can't be mentioned on specs sheet which makes WP7 truly amazing. It is so wonderful that I can't even care if my phone is not getting WP8 upgrade. I'm actually far more looking for a slew of new Nokia apps like Xpress browser which has saved me 84% data so far

So refreshing to see such a positive note for WP7.x! :good:
Gentlemen, time to retire the old Thunderbolt. Looking into the 8X and Droid DNA. I have watched and read a ton of vids and reviews on the 8x and DNA, now its time for the experts to lend thier opinion.
I will not be rooting or whatever we call it on the windows platform. thats a condition of the new phone. I have rooted or unlocked all prior phones, including my old Imagio, but the wife is accurate when she said they never work as good as when you left them alone. So with that, need un-unlocked opinions.
Storage - I use the phone mostly for music, some pictures for facebook and MMS, how bad is 16 (actually 11!?) with 7 skydrive? How many songs (or hours). Dont ask me to compare what I have space wise on my 32G SD card, my music is scattered from one file to the next, and the card is full of apk's and zips.
Overall performance - Really, this is where you guys can offer me true expertise. What do you personally think of the 8X compared to your old phone, especially if you came from a TB or android based OS?
iPhone factor - So I really like to brag about how my phones rock well beyond what my sheeps iPhone---I mean wife's iPhone can do. Can I truly have my tag say 'The iPhone killer!'
Thanks in advance guys! Everyone here at XDA just rocks the mobile world!
Come on guys, anyone got any opinion? Really would hate to reduce my choice to the DNA because I didn't get any feedback. Your opinions really matter, and would like to go into the store with a real good idea on the choice.
Let me know what you all think! Thanks again guys and gals!
Hey there,
Ive been running wp7 and its successors on my hd2 for some time (well over a year), as well as trying android and the dreaded ibone.
What i would say about wp8 and the 8x is this: It is completely different to droid & iOS. Both those os's are completely app dependant therefore data & memory hungry.
WP8 is different, if you are a facebook/twitter/linkedin bod (like me) these are fully integrated in to the os, hit 'people' tab and 'boom' all there in one screen - no app involved (in fact i hardly ever use the official fb/twit apps).
The os is smooth as butter, it was even on wp7 in the early days. WP8 is much better, the next generation, its fast, stable makes you smile in its natural and instinctive 'user-bility'.
What i would also say, is that you cannot fully appreciate a wp device whilst playing with it in a shop for 10 minutes. If you can, borrow one for a week and live with it - get it set up for YOU.........windows phone is for YOU. You will either love it or hate it, but i promise you an experience - Yes im a windows bod, have been since the days of wm5 - be different and own something that can only get better (just look at the low level of development from the ibone 4 to the 5 - point made)
Just my 2 cents of course - it is purely subjective.
Thanks Timmymarsh! I would love to borrow one, but doubt that will happen. Maybe I can get Verizon to go with a 15 day trial period or something.
I have a friend who works at MS, and he gets all the latest and greatest, and just loves his phone. Doubt he can get one for me ;(
Thanks for the information, it really helps to hear honest opinions!
I too have had rooted androids and jailbroken iPhones, but this phone has completely changed my outlook on things. While it has a few things I'd like different, I don't have any desire to change or alter it. Its fast, smooth, and didn't leave me with buyer's remorse immediately afterwards

How easy is its initial set up? I mean getting the screen to show the way you want, and setting up say outlook for contacts and emails? and can you tell me how that skydrive works? Does it play the music from there, or just downloads what I need?
Also, the xbox portion of the phone, if you xbox, how does it integrate and does it expand the xbox or more informational?
sooo easy to set up its painful, beats droid out the ground re contacts etc. I have an outlook account, gmail, msn, facebook, twitter & 3 other email accounts. So easy to link all your contacts so they appear in one contact page. Once you done it, its backed up for the next time - new device or hard rest
Mate, be different and get one, all new devices have their quircks, inc google and apple, but having said that, you wont be disappointed.
As for drop box, someone else will have to comment there as i dont know, i just sync the music i immediately want on my device so sant comment

Thanks again Timmy. I just watched a ton of vids where they demonstrated the 8X against android and apple, and I am really liking the idea of the live tiles, the different way the screen provides information, and the speed at which he was able to do stuff. Even counting he is paid to be that fast, its still impresive especially since he shows them how it works.
I am a minimilistic fan, and use SSLauncher with nothing but texts for my 'icons', but surprising, I find the boxes refreshing. I was leaning more towards the DNA, but ever since I started to get responses here, I think I am going to seriously check out the 8X.
not putting you off the 8x, its a great device, but try the nokia 920 in the shop too.

Yea, last rumor mill had it showing up around August, that came and went. So now they are saying end of this year (like in 18 days) or next year. If it doesn't come soon, then it wont happen for me.

not sure how SkyDrive works as I haven't used it yet. The Xbox support was a high point for me since it does so much that other phones can't or don't. Setting up your home screen is as easy as any I suppose. Simple but not boring

decision made
Hey guys, want to thank all of you for helping, voicing your opinions, etc. I have made my decision.
Watched a 6+ part video on each area of the 8X and then learning about WPDemo.com, decided to go back to Microsoft. Looking forward to getting the new phone. Guess only question now is, what color?
Thanks again everyone! I even found several apps that are both WM and android. So I only loose a few (turn by turn hurts a little though!)
Any idea when thats going to be corrected? I refuse to pay Veri$on any more money then they are already getting!
Thanks again everyone!
I've been an Android user for the best part of 5 years, seeing a steady improvement of OS and supporting apps. While the Galaxy Range has got better and better.
I'm currently using a Galaxy S4, but for whatever reason i'm being drawn towards the Nokia Lumia 1020. My partner wants one because "it's a Nokia" while I'm interested because of the Camera. I'm a DSLR user so this isn't for instagramin' me breakfast, it's to capture great photos at concerts and videos and general stuff which I plan to blog up. My other reasoning is I'm very fond of my Surface Pro, which is again a Windows device and I can't put it down, so am I mad? Will having a Windows phone have any real benefit with a Surface?
My greatest concern is the store that is less than lacking from my initial research with what i'd call basic apps are missing, youtube, twitter to name but a few. This concerns me, but being a window phone n00b you smart people maybe able to enlighten me to alternative options which don't come from the origin of the app.
I suppose what I'm really asking is did you switch from an Android and what did you miss and what can you not live without since you switched.
My current plan is to get a 1020, tether it to my surface and use windows 8 pro instead of apps on the phone and use the phone for texts calls and the camera.
Any and all help welcome.
My concern also are the lack off apps on windows phones vs the enormous google play store.
But those apps you mentioned as an example (youtube, twitter) are available. Just as facebook, skype, wordfeud etc are.
I dont have a windows phone, but these apps are listed when I search the windows phone app store online.
Most are not from the website makers with some being rubbish or nothing more than a front end to the mobile version. This is one of my concerns as a lot are not very good or cost money and still aren't very good.

Twitter is baked into the OS, but there is an official version (at least there is for WP 7.8). There are a number of third party apps for things like Youtube and Instagram that are a lot better than you'd think. Try Metrotube or Supertube apps for Youtube.
