Google experience Launcher and other 4.4 apps not working - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, quick question for you all... Any idea why the GEL and other 4.4 apks such as Google Wallet and even deskclock are not installing on my new 16gb Moto G. It was simlocked to Tesco Mobile but I have unlocked it. Keep getting the "problem parsing package" error.
Android version: Android 4.3
Baseband version: MSM8626BP_1032.3051.51.00R
Kernel version: 3.4.0-g7161c60 [email protected] #1 The Oct 24 23:44:06 CDT 2013
System version: 14.71.8.falcon_umts.TescoSL.en.GB
Build number: 14.10.0Q3.X-76-LGG-8
Thanks guys!

Probably something to do with it having a Tesco ROM which is designed for Tesco customers, no problems with the unlocked version from phones 4 u here.

Thanx, I may try that.

Factory reset worked, thanks pal! Wonder what the differences between Tesco SL (sim locked?) build and Retail build are? If anyone finds out, let me know?

Only difference is that if you have Retail (its like a generic ROM) you'll get updates as soon as they are available.
If you have a carrier model (EE,Vodafone, Tesco etc) you won't be able install updates straight from Motorola, but you'll need to wait untill the carrier approves it (adding own bloatware).

Same here. Tried to install paid app, but from my other gmail account (just downloaded and saved the .apk file) but won't let me install... Comes up the "problem parsing package" error. This apply for all 4.4 apps as well (tried few aps from Nexus 5 ) and no joy...

That makes sense, but the only thing is the Tesco ROM doesn't even seem to have any bloatware... So, are there any differences really? In the apps or functions available?

Not at all. Only thing is that you have to wait for updates till Tesco approves it.

Slightly off topic but seems the best place to ask as it's raised here
Does the tesco version have both options on the factory reset list, the 'tesco rom' and a 'stock factory' rom?
That would make the Tesco option more enticing than it already is, not exactly keen on tesco as the supplier for android updates...and I'm too lazy for roms now lol
Thanks in advance

Well, I think is too early, but I am sure some solution will appear shortly. The thing is that there's no generic (Retail) ROM yet...
Tbh, I am quite happy with the Retail version, as the phone performs fantastically. No laggs, freezing etc, and battery... Boy, getting easily 2 - 2/12 days. With the same set up on my previous phones the best was 1 1/2 day!!!

No it doesn't.

Well, did factory reset (only option I could find was in the Menu). Installed Google launcher from Nexus 5 and now it installed and working ok. However, it won't let you ad/remove pages. I had to fill the Home page and then it added 2nd page itself.
Few things are unnecessary complicated, but overall happy anyway.

The usual key combo (Vol- and power {only press for 2 sec}) doesn't work. It lets you go to bootloader menu and give you few options (Factory, Reboot etc) but doesn't go ahead with task chosen.
I opted for Factory, but it just rebooted and everything was intact.

Google experience Launcher
I have managed to install the Google experience Launcher and try it, but uninstalled as it doesn't have any advantage/difference from the stock launcher on Moto G. Well, except the size (after instalation its about 38MB).
Also had issues with other 4.4. .apk's, but as mentioned in other threads as well, factory reset will sort it out....

AT&T Tribute Y536A1

For anyone who got the new Tribute GoPhone by Huawei for AT&T. I found out that the bootloader can be unlocked by following these directions:
http://translate.google.com/transla...al-bootloader-unlock-fuer-alle-huawei-phones/
Hopefully there will be a way to root it soon!
EDIT: Okay well it showed it was unlocking but now it says phone locked again, so I don't know....
Have you tried with zzkey option? Do you know if this phone same as Huawei Ascend Y536-A1?
Looks like someone already figure out a way to unlock it, but still trying to root it.

I'm getting this phone on Tuesday. So does this "bootloader" have to be unlocked to be able to root this device? I'm kind of a noob when it comes to this stuff. The Tribute has TONS of bloatware so rooting it would be great.

I think so. I just emailed HUAWEI and they gave me the unlock code and you just replace it with the UUUUUUUUUUUUU in that tutorial.
Their email is [email protected]
Over in another XDA thread they posted that they finally have a CWM Recovery & Root for the Y550 (which as it has been noted is EXTREMELY similar to the Y536a1). Cannot guarantee it will work on the Y536a1, but seeing how similar they are it may be worth a shot! All you need to get started is an Unlocked Bootloader (which is readily available by e-mailing Huawei). I would try it on the Y536a1 I bought for my Mom, but it's her daily driver and if it doesn't work I'll never hear the end of it... LINK FOR THE BRAVE: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57359697&postcount=13
didn't work for me
It didn't work for me, I followed the instructions, I have the bootloader unlocked, but when I click the install-windows file, It installs recovery and get a message that says press any key to continue, afterwards, when I try to boot into recovery by pressing volume up + power, I get back into the bootloader, no matter what combination I use.
Tribute phone question
The previous question was dumb, but I will change this to say that the general code does not work for my Y53A1
Should have a custom recovery in a few days when I get time. Unlocked bootloader required of course. I also have the stock rom. I will open a new thread when it's ready with a tutorial.

Clearing out the AT&T bloatware will clear up about an additional 150 MB or so of system rom was the first thing I did. I had to change the permissions of /system/app /data/app to full read/write to tinker with it. I thought just because ES3 file manager was in root mode I could add/delete apps without any of that, but apparently not. That's probably common knowledge to everyone here, I'm new to this.
I got a few phones and I kept going back to this one because of the incredible battery life. You'll notice that battery saving features are turned on by default in the stock rom, combined with the Qualcomm MSM8926 chipset in it gives it a good recipe for me getting 6 hours of screen on time on about 20 hours of battery with both wifi and LTE turned on. I can go for days if I'm just using casual screen on time.
After installing an xposed module for OBB on SD, this phone that comes with little over a gig of usable internal storage becomes possibly the best value LTE phone here in the US in my opinion.
Huewei tech support from [email protected] ignored my first email requesting an unlock code. A week later I sent it again and had it in an hour. I thought that might be helpful information to everyone. So don't give up. :fingers-crossed:
Thanks stevotdo for the hard work.
a HUGE thanks to stevotdo!
I think we should get a main thread going because there are like 5 I counted with people posting.
I need a good usb tether app. Easy tether has issues with my laptop.
I also want to activate the navbar on this phone.
Xstana on Xposed didn't work.
Did you have to disable the resource hooks api? There was a warning after I installed xposed saying that Huawei stock roms don't play well. I want to use Gravity box!!!!
Advice?

On LTE: I maxed out Speedtest.net on 4 different servers on the down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's like 50Mbps. Upload hit 12.
Crazy!
This is going to be one of the under the radar surprise devices of the year.

Remember there's a major time difference between the US and there I send mine at about 2 a.m. Central us time and it took about 5 hours to get it back because it was pretty much afternoon over there so you may want to send a real real late because it'll actually go to a personal open it up and not sit there overnight for somebody to open their email the next day

Sent from my E6633 using Tapatalk
The last time I tried to repair my Z5 with Sony software I got a warning about this, that I should have my Google account and login after the repair. I don't think he cheated you, it's just how android works. Maybe he didn't know that. you should have added your own account before reseting the phone.
Now try to flash an official firmware with flashtool, and make sure you wipe everything.
this is not cheating but security provided by Sony, the seller needs to remove his account so that you can add yours but since he's not responding, you can flash any latest firmware and you are good to go with your new device.
Yeah guys well i dont know, if he didnt cheat me why doesnt he respons. anyway, i am going to download the firmware now and try it. thx for fast respons!
so now i flashed this 32.0.A.6.152 and now i am in a boot loop, the phone gets grey and then after like 2 minutes its restart itself with red light flashing there up and again gray...
I've been searching about your problem and it seems that there isn't an easy way to bypass Google account verification. It was designed to make the device useless if it got stolen. I think that the best solution is to hand it over to Sony customer services (with evidence of purchase of course) and ask them to repair the device.
Regarding your later problem (boot loop), my guess is that you flashed an old firmware which is somehow incompatible with Google account protection.

Which network are you on? I am on Vodafone and updates get pushed out super quick compared to the likes of EE who take an eternity.
Also mine was Vodafone branded but debranded it by flashing XEU so maybe you can try that?
Mine is unbranded (bought from Samsung Online store) and I'm on O2 network.
Do I need to flash another firmware to get updates more quickly?
I thought on an unbranded phone the carrier was irrelevant when it comes to updates. Maybe I was wrong?
I'm on BTU as well and I have nothing either.
EE carrier but my phone is unbranded from Samsung too.

I had the same thing when I had a S6 unbranded it took forever to get updates on BTU sometimes it was way after the carrier updates.
Not sure if you can go BTU to XEU but no harm in trying as it does not require a wipe of the phone.
**EDIT**
Another way is use samsung smart switch to see if there is an update using that.

Will this phone have custom roms?

It's out for some time now and I am just wondering because the kernel sources are out and not a single rom in the rom Section
Two things are needed:
Qualcomm releasing CAF source (LINK)
Devs
And in my opinion is just a matter of time.
Just don't expect 646512357 ROMs and 265412 kernels.
So if the delayed s845 sources are the reason, none of the current s845 devices should have much development, right?
And just lineageos would be nice or a similar close to stock Rom.

That makes sense apparently but if you go check the OP6 forum it already has 4 kernels, 2 ROMs and in general the forum is a lot more active, even of it has just come out.

Oneplus has the biggest development community out there. Even the 1+1 still has lots of devs... The notch is the only reason I bought the 2s instead of the 1+6. The roms currently available for the 1+6 are optimized OOS roms (stock roms with a few optimisations) you can compare them to xiaomi.eu(those are NOT the global Roms) roms which are already available for our device.
I'd love to have a stock rom like lineage OS or something similar.
To be honest, coming from Nexus devices ever since I hate MIUI. It's well designed and all, but the app integration doesn't work. I can't even send SMS answers to notify incoming callers that I will call them back when using the Google messages app. Maybe with the miui app it would work but I don't see the point in having standard apps that do not work.
The launcher is not my favourite and I don't like the phone/dialer either. And the worst is, that can't be changed at the moment because there is no working APK file..at least I haven't found one.
So please some dev make a lot of people happy and bring us some stock android rom. P would be great!

You do realize you can at least change the launcher without any issues, right?

Of course. I've been running the pixel launcher since flashing the global ROM.
Only the phone / dialer is still miui and I'd like to use the Google one but with no luck so far.

It's working here, you just have to give it all permissions in settings and change the standart phone app in settings to the google one

Can you point me to the APK you're using?
I can't give it permissions because I haven't found an apk to install. All attempts failed and stopped with the device saying app not installed....without any reason.

I tried 4 different APIs from there. None of them will install. Which version should I get.
Tried the latest arm64 nodpi. Does this matter or is this the wrong one for the mimix2s? I'm on global ROM version 9.5.19 android 8.0 if that matters...

Arm64 nodpi should be the right one. I just tested it with 2617680 and it installed fine

It's closer to an aosp base so kernel dev is easier. Also kernels won't fix the battery drain that miui causes. Also those 2 roms are just OxygenOS tweaks. They aren't compiled from source. No dev for 845 devices will happen until caf source is released

Downloaded it from apkmirror but the installation fails. Says app not installed.
Am I missing something? Any security permissions? The one I linked in the pervious post installed right away but it's modded somehow.

You just have to allow your browser to install .apk files that's all... Strange but now you got a working version, right?

Android 11 Developer Preview

It's up! https://www.xda-developers.com/andr...al&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer
Trying to decide if I can live without root and give it a go.
Looking forward to hearing experiences, bugs and what not before I make the jump.

Lol should have seen that one coming. It's killing me not to take the leap so I may end up just saying f it and going in blind.

Did it! So far so good. I'm going to see if root will work, tested calling and messaging and stuff and it seems fine. I didn't wipe either.

No root but that was pretty well a given.

New animations are really smooth. A lot of cool little bounce effects.

There is a new partition that appears to be part of the early boot process so Magisk will need some work. Mr. Wu is looking at it, but it may be trial and error on his part until source is released.
I wonder if this still works?
adb shell sm set-isolated-storage off
Is it just me or is Android getting boring. I see no innovation is this new release. I'm starting to think I have been here too long. Apple will never be an option for me. I will definitely live with the incremental iterations of Android but am loosing my passion. Show me something earth shattering like you once did.

you said you didnt wipe, but it still delete all you data in phone right?
im in non unlocked bootloader
Just installed the OTA about an hour ago. So far all of my apps are working ok, including Chase and Capital One. Google Pay I have not tried using yet at a machine.
The only thing that I am missing is the voicemail tab on the dialer. Also my galaxy watch is a bit sluggish right now, but that may be due to low battery.

Remove -w from the fastboot flash all batch file
*Sorry read that wrong initially. I don't think the ota file wipes automatically but I can't say for sure.
Root may take awhile, Google removed /sbin from the root directory. That is causing him issues. No TWRP isn't helping either.
Has anybody on Google Fi that uses an e-SIM flashed the preview yet? I haven't been able to get my service to fully activate since flashing. Calls and texts can still be made, but the fun things like RCS and VPN can't be used until the service is activated.
Just curious. I know it's a preview and things will be broken. I'm more looking for corroborating information and if anybody's discovered a workaround.
Download Fialer from PlayStore and do a Sim Switch or mess with the cellular info in fialer other than that mine is up a running fine which I use Hangouts for msg.

Yesterday I got just under 16 hours with just under 6 of screen on time. That was with Bluetooth on and listening to podcasts all day.

Hi All, Sorry for the Newbie question... I have a Pixel 2 and 3 as a play around phone as I use an S10 for my work/main line...
So, would love to give 11 a go... Last time I just received an OTA to join and I see OTA being mentioned ... So just curious do we have to flash this first beta manually or can we get access via an OTA?

You have to flash this one manually. They don't release the sign up until beta 1. This is still in developer preview stage, though extremely stable.
