(Q) Uknown number in about phone - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just checked in about phone, status tab and my phone number is saying unknown.
I am able to phone etc, I'm just wondering why my phone number isn't showing up.

that number is read from the SIM card. You can write it using another phone that knows that.

In all my phone's its been showing unknown only!
Its not an issue. May be there's an issue with your sim or network!

It's not a network thing. It's what @geemaan said. It's whether your SIM card has it's phone number written to the phone number field (within the SIM) electronically. It is used for the sole purpose of showing up in your handset as "your" number.
Android has never had the ability to write the number to SIM for you. It's been in Several CM builds for years and there have in teh past, been apps on the play store that can do this for you too. Otherwise, put the SIM in another phone and wrote it. Or, don't care..

I saved mine in an iphone 3gs. Hangouts was having issues recognising my own number until my SIM card had it.

Once the xposed framework is compatible with KitKat then you can use this to set the number of your sim.

HELP!
Under Settings/About phone/Status, is your IMEI 0 or a string of multiple 0's and is your phone number correct? Do you have mobile data (3g/LTE)?

If your IMEI is correct, and your ERI is set to "5", it may be a problem on Verizon's end. Have you tried contacting them about the problem? It could also indicate a problem with your SIM card, and you may need to get a replacement from Verizon.
IMEI is correct
ERI is 5
SIM Card is brand new, just had to replace the phone and used the new one that came with it.
Should I return the phone to stock before taking it to Verizon for support?

Yes, I would return it to stock and then check to confirm that the issue is still there (and not linked to your ROM, themes, etc.).
Then bring it back in to Verizon.

Does anyone know what this icon means?

Please, help me. I changed my SIM Card and now there is this icon on the notification bar, I don't know what it means.

Sorry, I forgot to point out which icon I meant. It's the white square with the big "1" inside.

I think that number is For the users of the korean model which has two SIM slots. It indicates if SIM 1 or 2 is in use. Dont know why you have it though

I have the same icon on my 920 since upgrading to ICS I am using a UK T-Mobile [EE] sim card. It does seem to disable certain sim features, [Call forwarding, call barring etc. Tried re-installing ICS and formatting etc but get a "network or sim error" report when trying to activate call forwarding. I bought the phone second hand 3 months ago and found the imei number missing from inside the phone so am not sure if it has been "cloned" or something like that. Perhaps some developer will read this thread and give us some help !

Can you still get to the phones call divert settings or does it report "network or sim card error" when trying to change settings.

I have same problem exactly. I am in the UK using UK T-Mobile, which is now rebranded EE. I think the fact the sim card is T-Mobile and the Network is now EE is causing the phone software to try and use 2 sim cards. The unusual system icon [the 1 in a white square] is displaying the sim card number1 is in use and connected. Try a friends sim card which has data enabled in your phone and it should clear. If it does you will need to get a sim card from T-Mobile/Orange that works. Please let me know if you get the problem sorted out and I will update you if I get any answers to the problem from T-Mobile UK.

Actually, I am in Brazil, but the same thing happens here.
If I put my old SIM card (from the carrier "TIM"), the icon disappears.
But with my new SIM card (carrier "Oi"), the icon appears again.
I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but my old SIM card was a very old mini-SIM model. This new one that doesn't have call forwarding has a micro-SIM-style contact arrangement on a mini-SIM-shaped card.
I would check with my new carrier if I could switch my card, however I never use call forwarding, so I don't suppose it is worth the hassle.
Anyways, thanks for the help.
I believe that means that you are using line 1 had this on one if my windows phone. That is your service provider settings.

Default phone number - any way to change it?

I got my Nexus 5 on contract from Three Ireland and I had to get a new SIM card with it and transfer my existing number onto that SIM card, but for the half a day before the transfer the new SIM card had a different phone number assigned to it, which appears to be what the device thinks is its phone number, even now that my existing phone number is in use. For example Hangouts just randomly asked me to confirm my phone number again, but it quoted the new SIM's original phone number instead of my existing one. Any idea if this is stored somewhere on the phone or is the SIM card itself reporting the wrong number?
Did more digging and found the wrong number is also being displayed in Settings > About Phone > Status > My Phone Number
Its written to the SIM itself. There used to be apps that could rewrite it. Certain custom roms too... or just other model (non-android) phones

Ah okay thanks, I think I have some old non-smart phones lying around that might be able to change it :good:
I'm in the same situation but it doesn't really bother me. I've only had to confirm my number a couple of times. Maybe 3 would send a replacement sim if you asked them. That should have the correct number on it.
Sent from my Nexus 5
Yeah it should. Its purely cosmetic though

3 told me that they couldn't change the number on a single and would have to send one out, which they did in 24hours with my number on it. No problem.

[Q] No service on new Nexus 5, but data works

Hi,
Just bought a brand new Nexus 5 from a person wanting to keep his iPhone.
Everything is working fine, except it says "No service" (sometimes with one bar, sometimes with all four). Data is working fine though, but neither SMS/MMS or phonecalls works. Sometimes, when i reset/reboot i doesn't say "No Service", but after one single phonecall it reverts back to "No Service" and only data works again.
Iv'e tried resetting with the firmware on the phone from the start, tried flashing both kot49h and krt16m, tried getting a new sim (which works fine in my old Nexus 3), tried different radio-settings but nothing works for me.
Any thought of, what I can do? (before I ship it off to repair, which would cost quite a lot)
Thanks, in advance!

A European one called Telia, or TeliaSonara, depending on your country. I live in Denmark, and here it's called Telia.

Yeah, that doesn't work either. Sometimes it can't even find any operators :/
More>Mobile Network Settings>Access Point Names
You need to either update or add your APN for your provider, then everything will work for you. Flashing modems probably won't help you. Also, make sure the Sim card you have is active.

Iv'e checked and double-checked all of the APN-settings. They should be allright. Also, the sim is active (and it works fine in my Nexus 3)
Don't want to look offensive, but are you on wifi?
Dansker her også
The problem you have, i faced that when my old phone got stolen. So less then a week ago my old phone got stolen (got it back, but bought a nexus 5 now :3) i called the insurance company and police to report it stolen, and i got it IMEI locked with the help of the police. And when that happends you wont be able to call or text from it, but your data will work for tracking it.
So my guess is that its a stolen phone and the original owner reported it stolen to the police, and now its IMEI locked.
Try and call the police and give them the IMEI number, and tell them what you told us and ask if its locked.
Great day to you!

No I'm not ^^
@Zestia , I'll try that, although the websites with blacklist-lookup that I've tried the IMEI with, didn't say that it's stolen.
Did you check to see if your phone is blacklisted for being lost/stolen?

EDIT: I was :/

Nexus 5 has "No service"

I got this phone yesterday. It is currently running Android 6.0.1 and the status bar keeps saying "No service". I have tried using 5.1.1, as well - same message.
When I first got the phone, I tried rooting 6.0.1 with the latest SuperSU but resulted in a bootloop so I reset the phone + unrooted it with the Nexus Root Toolkit.
I have tried using my SIM on another person's phone - works perfectly.
I have tried using another person's SIM on my phone - "No service".
In the "About phone" section -> Status -> SIM status, the phone recognizes my phone number and IMEI number. So my phone knows there is a SIM there and everything, it just can't connect to the phone network for some reason.
What could possibly be the problem?
Has the imei been blacklisted? Have you tried searching for networks?
i been getting the same thing on and off since i had mine and seem stuck as well
What network are you using?? If its CDMA you have to get the imie# activated into the system by your wireless provider... So any Verizon/sprint for example you need to get that activated in their system.. Only GSM is plug & play at&t/t mobile

My IMEI is not blacklisted according to protectyourdata.ca's IMEI checker.

I am using Bell. It is HSPA I think. The SIM card works with my Oneplus One, which hasn't had its IMEI # activated on their system.
I've decided to just return it and get a new one.

Hspa is a GSM technology.. Make 100% sure the nexus supports your radio bands.. I would honestly either try a nother sim card or call customer service.. Perhaps it could be a defective unit. Also make sure it fits 100% in the sim tray. I had that issue once with a sim that didn't quite snap into the sim tray

I just checked and Bell requires phones to be 850 or 1900 MHz compatible. The Nexus 5 supports these frequencies. I tried my sister's and friend's sim cards and it still doesn't work.

You might have a defective sim reader
Also get a can of electronics spray air.. Blow out the sim port. Don't use your mouth as saliva can corrode the connector and they can claim water damage
