I'm currently debating between a LG G2 and a Nexus 5, and leaning toward the Nexus 5 because I really want the stock Android experience. But I absolutely love the Knockon feature on the G2. Some quick search shows that Nexus 5 has this implemented via custom kernels. My question is if this implementation is just as good that of the G2 (i.el, consistent, no buggy behavior, no heavy battery drain), and if it can be done by flashing just a kernel or mod (leaving the base Google Android intact. Kind of tired of messing with tons of custom ROM's. Want the stock one and sticking to it.)
Your advice will be greatly appreciated.
The knock knock feature requires the digitizer to stay on so yes, there will be some battery drain but I think some users report like 2% in an hour which is perfectly acceptable to me. I used knock for a while on the Chaos Kernel when it was not CAF based and it worked just as it should. I am sure things have only improved in the latest kernels. There is a dev that adds the double tap to wake/ sleep to some of the most popular kernels such as Franco and elementalx.

Well, first of all you ask such a question in the Nexus 5 forum?! Obviously people are going to tell you to buy the Nexus! Knockon/dt2w features has been implemented on N5 by our awesome devs but people have reported that they are suffering from battery drain!
It really comes down to your choice basically. Yes, the G2 might have a bigger battery but the N5 will have long time support from Google (since it's a nexus) and from our devs off course! That's the reason why all of us fell in love with the Nexus 5!
I use Touch Control. It's awesome, and doesn't have any noticeable effect on the battery.

Some months ago I was wondering almost the same thing, between the Nexus 5 and Motorola X. Finally I decided to buy the Nexus 5 (primarily because its price) but the point here is that now I have 3 months with it, and I can tell you I'm very happy with it.
It depends on your preferences, I like the stock android experience and the huge developer support for the Nexus rather than a phone full of features, sometimes unnecessary features. And with XDA and some time you can have a Nexus full of features too.
Hello, I have been through a terrible doubt. Next week I will buy my new phone. I currently have a Nexus 4 because I always liked the modifications and custom roms.
As I have not much money, so I need to choose between Nexus 5 16Gb version and the G2 version of 32 Gb
I realize that the G2 has
- Better Camera
- Better Battery
- Better Screen
- Double of the Storage
And the Nexus 5 has been more fluid in 3d games videos in youtube, despite worsening in the benchmarks, and has more roms and ability to receive new system designs such as Ubuntu and Sailfish
It's worth leaving all these points better in the G2 for the stability and roms of the Nexus 5?

Let's see what other users think of this. A balanced opinion will be best to help others as well. In my case, I'm using LG G2. It's an awesome phone downright. But now, I feel like getting a Nexus 5 coz I believe it's easier to root & to flash custom roms plus there are plenty of support in the forum. G2 is easy to root but can also easily get into eternal bootloop, even if you've done everything right.
But again, G2 is a solid phone if you are a normal user who doesn't care about updates and rooting and flashing custom roms and such.
Or, I could easily go back to Samsung phones as those happen to be the easiest to root & to flash custom rom.

Hello Slim ROM fans. I've got a tough choice to make. I currently have a Galaxy S3 (i747m) which is running Slim LP 5.1.1 beautifully. I love this ROM. I recently flashed the S3 back to the stock touchwiz and instantly missed the Slim ROM. It has become a major factor in the purchase of my next phone.
Anyways, my contract has expired and I figure that since I am going to keep the same plan that my last contract had, I might as well resign and get a cheap / free upgrade to a new phone. My biggest problem is which phone to pick...and most importantly, make sure there is a Slim LP ROM for it...or at least in the works. I have tried Slim Kat and Bean but I prefer LP. Also, installing Kat or Bean is difficult now because any new phone comes pre-loaded with the latest bootloaders which apparently will not boot the older versions of Android, so I'm pretty much stuck with Slim LP....not that I mind tho. So here are my choices.
Galaxy S4 (i337m)
Galaxy S5 (not sure which model exactly, but its from Fido so Canadian version Im sure)
LG G3 (D852)
Sony Xperia M4 Aqua (unknown model)
So what do you all think? I am biased towards the Samsungs for the better contrast screens (super AMOLED) and extra buttons so keep that in mind.

You have to be careful when buying a carrier branded phone because they often come with locked bootloaders which can be difficult to unlock, if an exploit even exists. You're best bet is pay the extra money and get a dev edition device that has an easily unlockable bootloader.

But I totally understand.
The last couple phones I chose, the Slim was no longer being developed for.
And with Slim being my favorite base ROM, upon which several other VERY cool ROM's are based, it meant my phones were very limited in ROM choices.
After some [very] quick research, it seems Slim has been on the down-low for awhile now and may still not be developing much until after Marshmallow hits.
So, as mentioned above, a Nexus device is likely your best bet.
And if you're not on T-Mobile or Sprint, then totally forget about Samsung. Because AT&T and Verizon Samsung are totally screwed with the locked bootloaders.
One phone to keep an eye on is the relatively new unlocked (for all carriers) Motorola Moto X Pure 5.7" device.
As of yet, there are no ROM's. But development for prior generations appears to have been pretty decent. And this phone will have an unlocked bootloader on all carriers.
My beloved N5 has been acting wonky the last couple weeks and I need to consider a replacement, as my new job doesn't leave much time for troubleshooting. Could I get some informed opinions on the best Android phone currently on the market to replace my N5?
My two must-haves are:
1) Must be able to root at least as easily as N5. Again, I'm time-pressed and can't spend hours fussing over it.
2) Must have a removable/user-replaceable battery -- the REGULAR kind, where you don't have to disassemble the phone to replace it. That's my biggest gripe about the Nexus.
Otherwise, N5-level specs or better are fine.

Really depends on how much you want to spend but the LG G3/G4 or Samsung S5 may be a good choice.

Thanks. I was thinking about the G4, but with the G5 supposedly out in 45 days, I wonder if I can milk my N5 that long? Wonder how long it will take people to develop a rooting mechanism? Seems like a quarter of my apps need root access.
IMO, this phone ran A LOT better on Lolipop than it does on M. Maybe that's my problem...
I like mm better than LP on the n5. I am currently using a stock s4 at the moment. I got it really cheap and want to make sure it functions properly before passing it on to a family member.

I'm in the same boat. My N5 is about done. Already replaced the charging port thingy but now the mic is going out and it needs a new battery badly.
I was hoping I'd be able to limp along till the new Nexus with an 820 but it doesn't look like I can last another 6 months. The LG G5 looks promising and I'm gonna try to wait till it comes out.
You can really get some good deals on the LG G4 if you shop around right now. Sure it's coming up to a year old, but it's still a fantastic phone with a removable battery. It doesn't feel too sluggish and you can probably find a nice ROM to put on there. The LG G5 is dope. It's much easier to replace the battery on this model and would be nice to have. It's also apparently slightly smaller so I'd enjoy that more. I expect it to be quite expensive though as it launches later this year.
Personally for me, I'm falling in love with the Galaxy S7. I know it doesn't have a removable battery, but it has a Micro SD card slot, sensible size and features Samsung Pay arriving in the UK this year. Ultimately though, there's still nothing wrong with my Nexus 5, so I've no sensible reason as of right now to upgrade.

im planning also to replace my nexus 5.
my 1st choice is the Lenovo ZUK Z1 (cyanogen OS) and the other would be 1+2 or LG G4.
I have replaced my nexus 5 with a LG G4 two months ago and I absolutely love it. Awesome camera, great battery life and a really nice screen. Rooting my G4 was simple to, but keep in mind that the non European versions don't have an official bootloader unlock and an unofficial unlock may never come. But if you have the European version like me than you won't have problems with rooting and flashing custom roms. If you like really active development than maybe the G4 won't be the best choice for you due all other versions of the G4 can't be unlocked...

Are the One Plus phones easily rooted and bootloader unlocked?
I thought the G4 was locked down tight if you wanted one with a US warranty?
Not really looking at these devices from tweakers' point of view.. Actually ever since after KK, there ain't much more to do with LP or the current MM. Its BETTER NOT to tweak/root them. If you're into Android dev, stay in KK.. I am..???? If you have noticed, much of the popular devs have already long left the Android development scene..

I root and unlock the bootloader mostly to use utils like Titanium Backup and TWRP.
Maybe I should just buy a 6P and a spare battery while the latter are still available? Is the 6P easily rooted and bootloader unlocked, or is that screwed down tight?
Not really sure about the 6P.. I'm still using my Nexus 5, 7 (2012) and 10.. Multirom with several 4.4.4s.. With and without GApps. Dalvik is still the best.
Hey Guys , so after selling my Xiaomi Redmi 2 a week back I was looking for a new phone with great community support. I am getting the used Nexus 5 (32GB) for around 80$ in my country India. So my question is the device still worth it ?
How is the battery life , camera (both front and back) and gaming performance with nougat roms ? Can I get the camera samples ?

I believe the new Pixel camera wont function on the N5 due to some technical difficulties and hardware limitations, and the Nougat ROMs are all ports since there was no official release for the N5, which has a limitation regarding CDMA, I.E. - Sprint and Sprint MVNOs will NOT work on any of the Android 7 ROMs. As for battery life, the N5 was never known to be very good in this department, although many custom kernels address this issue, amd as far as the N5 rear camera, lets just say it was always said that it could have been better, and now, 4 years after the release of the N5, it is definitely obsolete. But the N5 was a phone aimed to give flagship performance at a bargain price, so corners HAD to be cut in places... No SD card is one more such area. My thoughts are this.... It has a Snapdragon 800, 2Gb RAM, and either 16 or 32Gb memory... These 3 facts are the biggies, and the N5 STILL outperforms almost ALL bargain phones today. Just the processor alone makes it worth the money, as well as the cordless charging, unlocked BL, and MultiROM custom recovery. One last thing though, the N5 was made back when the OS was less than 1Gb, much less, so you could install lots of system apps, the current Android 7 OS is barely under 1Gb WITHOUT any of the bigger GAPPS zips. The N5 is capped at 1Gb for your OS files, sooooo, you wont be able to flash an OS/GAPPS that is over 1Gb in size, you might want to take that into consideration before you buy a phone which still outperforms most new non-flagship devices, but is nontheless still obsolete. i will say go for it.. The only thing i had against the phone was its battery.. in the stock os, battery life is terrible.. But since flashing the unofficial hammerhead caf lineage os by phoval, i hav started loving the phone again coz the battery life has become manageable.. i plan to keep it atleast till 2019.. @Battlecreed5

I'm a long time user but getting really annoyed with the worsening battery life. Where can I find out more about unofficial hammerhead caf roms and how to install them. Does it allow using Xposed?
Switched on My N5 after a long time. It still runs smoother & faster than some of my 2016 mid-range devices. I'm loving the performance:victory:. For me the only con is it's camera(Lol I didn't bought N5 for camera) & battery backup (managing somehow):silly: The device is good but you can get better devices than this at this time!!:highfive:

Agreed, changing to a battery conservative ROM will help, as will a custom kernel. Unfortunately I made too many performance enhancements with Ex Kernel, like over clocking the CPU from 2.2 to 2.3, which negated any battery saving settings. Now I just Fast Charge it and let Ex Kernel do its thing in Battery Saver mode when it gets low.
I just did the same thing - last month I bought a N5 for dirt cheap and it runs great. I just yesterday put PureNexus ROM on it so that I can have 7.1.1. I am amazed at how smoothly it runs. While it will not replace my N6 as my daily driver, it is a more than capable phone still.

Ok, here we go. The Nexus 5 Android Development section of the forums is the best source of information for that. Here you will find popular original ROMs like PureNexus, Resurrection Remix, Nitrogen OS, and more. As to which one to use, that is kind of a personal preference. Each ROM offers a unique experience.
Additionally, more ROMs can be found in the Nexus 5 Original Android Development section of the forums. Here you will find ROMs based on other ROMs, primarily stock-like ROMs like LineageOS (previously Cyanogenmod), as well as custom recoveries and kernels.
You can also stick with stock, 6.0.1 is available directly from Google - it is a nice upgrade over your 5.1.1 stock setup.
If you are unfamiliar with flashing ROMs, might I suggest starting with this guide on how to unlock your bootloader (which you probably have already done since you have root), how to install a custom recovery like TWRP. Once this is done, you are open to the world of customization.

Visit each ROMs thread. Watch YouTube reviews. Or just flash some for yourself and try different ones out. I loved cyanogenmod nut haven't tried out LineageOS yet. I'm on PureNexus on this N5 I am currently using because a lot of people on XDA recommended it.
What kind of thing now are you looking for in a ROM?
Something that would give me more battery life and yet be stable. I also use xposed which may be a hindrance as it only works with pure stock Android.

As xposed is not currently available to Nougat, you'll probably be best sticking with a Marshmallow based ROM, maybe even stock.
I can tell you that a ROM like Pure Nexus has a lot of features built into the ROM similar to what many modules from xposed offer - for me, it is a no brainer to have the text in place of a battery icon in the status bar. Also, Nougat has a restart built-in to the ROM, so that solves the other problem I had with stock Android. Just give it a whirl!
