Hello,
I have been a great fan of palm and palm pre series in the past.
As a result, I have about 5 touchstone chargers everywhere and used in modded Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S 3 in the past.
I'm thinking if modding Nexus 5 to have Touchstone compatibility would be possible as well like they have done in Nexus 4.
(webosnation[dont]com/nexus-4-gains-touchstone-charging-thanks-clever-hacking)
From the pictures in ifixit.com, there are total 4 connection coming out from the back cover.
(d3nevzfk7ii3be[dont]cloudfront[dot]net/igi/SJQTUlA5iTNuxHlb[dot]huge)
I just don't know which of the two is the charging sides and which of the two would be + and -.
(d3nevzfk7ii3be[dot]cloudfront[dot]net/igi/OmM5ZNymVr4ODENF[dot]huge)
Any ideas guys?
I'm not a very techy person and I don't have the necessary tools to determine what is what.
Any advices would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I don't get it. Nexus 5 already has Qi charging capability which is wireless like the touchstone...

Yes, Nexus 5 does have Qi compatibility, but it doesn't work with touchstone technology as they have different specification. (I've tried but it doesn't charge).
Also, Qi chargers are far more expensive then touchstone for some reason...
As I have already established wireless ecosystem with touchstone, I would like to keep using the touchstone rather than qi charger.
You can buy a qi charger on amazon for like $20. That's a lot easier than popping open the back and risking damage.

I do know that you can buy a qi charger on amazon for like $20 but touchstone chargers are about $10 on amazon now and I already have 5 of them around my work, home, car and my gf's place.
But, most of qi charger is flat, which I personally do not like.
The angle of the phone in a touchstone is quite useful for many reasons and I just prefer it to the flat surface of most qi standard charger.
I've already modded about 6 phones to use touchstone charger, so I know the risk and I assume those risk.
I just need help with which connection is for charging as there are four connections connected to the back cover of the Nexus 5 and I can't clearly pinpoint which two of the four is for charging and which one is plus and minus.

So, thank you for the Qi charger recommendations and I am aware of Qi technology, but I'm just curious about the +,- connection of the board.
thanks.

I'm considering the same thing, as I also have a bunch of touchstones that I used with a galaxy nexus that I modded to use the tech. Would like to do the same with the N5.
If you've modded six different phones for touchstone then you're probably the most qualified to figure out how to mod the N5 as well, you should do the mod and then write a guide on it .

I could do a mod previously as other people who understands the circuit board determined where to connect and such as I don't have the necessary tools to find out about it or the knowledge to fully understand the board.
I intent on doing a guide if I am successful.

That would be GREAT!!:good:
just discovered today that the N5 has magnetic points. thus the touchstone charger holds it perfectly at an angle.
now all i want to do is either stuff a Qi charger into the touchstone dock, or what the OP wants and stuff the Touchstone coil into the phone.
I FULLY understand that this is an old thread but I was just thinking this today. The TouchStone holds the Nexus 5 perfectly. And I mean PERFECTLY. See my attached photos. The magnets seem to line up just right and the angle of the phone is great for doing stuff on phone without picking it up. If I had the know how, I would attempt to put a QI coil into a TouchStone. But I dont. If someone ever figured it out and posted directions (which I kind of doubt), I'd attempt it. I owned a Palm Pre with the TouchStone and loved it. I have two TouchStones in a box of random stuff, doing nothing. It would be awesome to be able to use them again. I know there is the Nexus 4 charger. But I heard that doesnt stick very well. I am tempted to try one out though.
P.S. This is mainly a conversational post and not really a high hopes post.
I was just about to buy one Touchstone for my N5, then I ran into this...
Forgive me for never using a wireless charger before, my initial thought on why Touchstone would not work with N5 was that somehow it has a very limited output amp for the phone to be charged, and in that sense, I was suspecting whether its coil is too small or the wire being too thin.
I don't think those cheap ebay Qi charger has anything different but a bigger coil. And obviously there are folks modding those flat-bed Qi chargers into magnets-equipped. So... if the coil was the issue, then you are essentially using touchstone's shell and just replacing a coil in there...
BUT, all those was based on my assumption of "coil matters". so ... anyways, not worth the hassle for me, I'm out. and In for a cheap pad.
Good luck!
I too would like to be informed of when if ever this happens. :good:

Hello friends. I tried searching and didn't find anything I was looking for. Perhaps I just wasn't looking in the right spot, so feel free to call me an idiot and paste a link.
I just received a speck case and tried to use it on my wifes nexus 5 wireless charger. It is the square one she ordered from google. NFC works through the case but that charger does not. Is there any info out there that shows what cases work w/ what wireless charger? I am basically looking for something to charge at night that doesnt NEED to be held by magnets, but it would be nice. I am also looking for a car mount that NEEDS to be held in place by magnets and charge wirelessly. I am aware of the DIY threads, but if the charge wont take because of my case then it is a moot point.
Money really isn't an issue, I just want things to work. I am on my 4th day w/ the Nexus 5 and loving it. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I have a Speck Ultra Hybrid case in my Nexus 5.
My gets charged normally with the case. Never had any problems.
But my wireless charger is not that from Google. It is a generic chino. It works fine!
I'm using a Cruzerlite Case and it works well with the original Nexus4 wireless charger.

@kuthedude - the speckcase doesn't look to be too thick - odd that it wouldn't work with the nexus charger. I use a case (Spigen neo hybrid) on my Nexus 5 with the nokia wireless charger and it charges just fine (it doesn't have magnets though). (I assume wireless charging works if you remove the case.)
Try moving the phone around on the charger to see if it works with the case?
I'm looking to spend no more than $15 for a Qi charger, can you recommend one of the cheap Chinese ones from eBay or AliExpress that work well with the Nexus 4?
From Amazon, look up LuguLake Qi-Enabled Wireless Standard Charger. I can't post URLs yet, or else i would post it. It's $18.99USD.
I bought this about 2-3 weeks ago. I use it daily at work. It takes ~1hr longer to charge than just connecting to wall directly, but that's no problem for me personally. It is a bit elevated from the bottom and has a small fan, which does take away a lot of the heat it generates. I recommend leaving the protective cover on the pad itself, it is pretty slick so the phone can slide off if its a bit angled.

I ordered mine from DX. It is now currently 17.99 (23% OFF). Works well, and I have implimented this into my desk. (cut size out, put really thin layer of wood over top, glued back in. It looks like part of my desk now, just put a small outline of where it is with some weak magnets to hold it in place)

I have the same charger as you. Strangely, I have issues with it charging. It charges my phone 2%, then stops. The strange thing is the indicator is green, and the device says that is is charging, but the actual battery number does not increase.

My daydream was not active, but the setting was actually ticked in settings. Should I turn it off?
Does anyone know of or can recommend a nice wireless charging station for the S5? I'm glad the phone is dust/water proof, but messing with that micro USB cover my get old after a while. Plus, it could break off. I haven't used wireless charging since my Palm Pre days so I have no idea what's out.

I've got 2 of them that I use on my Note 3 with wireless charging cover (1 at home, 1 at work) - they're both great.
I bought one off Amazon for ~$40 and another for ~$25 on some daily deal site. Well worth the investment to not have to futz around with cables.
Only thing I see so far is that Samsung isn't offering the wireless charging back for the S5 yet; with the Note 3, it took them a month or two after launch to put them online for purchase and even then, they were backordered.

I've got a close friend who works at the samsung experience shop within the local best buy and he had training last week on the s5 and its accessories. He said they are expecting the charging back in store within a week of launch. Good news is the first one that come in has my name on it so hopefully I dont have to contend with too much.
If you get a wireless charging back does it make the phone too thick for traditional 3rd party cases. What I want to do is get a wireless charging back plate and then put a case around the whole phone. Is that possible?

I had an S4 (and Note3) with wireless charging back covers and cases on both...SOME cases work.
For the S4, I was able to use Cruzerlite TPU cases with no problem. Any of the hard cases didn't work for me (Spigen) and I even tried the multi-piece cases (TPU + hard bumper) but the only ones that worked were Cruzerlite TPU.
In fact, I'm so sure that the S5 will work with Cruzerlite and a wireless charging back cover, I already bought a new case.

It's samsung's way of making more money, i prefer a receiver insert, it's thinner and i've been using them with all my phones.
I will be picking a few up in the next few days in china, need to check what the quality is like.

Really??? I got one for my S4 and it was awful - so thick that the case bulged out in the middle of the back...so much that the phone didn't lay flat on the table anymore.
Even though the Samsung battery cover is a little thicker overall, at least it's symmetrical and doesn't look home-made.

Guys, I'm going to be launching a wireless charging phone sleeve on Kickstarter in January. The unique selling point will be the Smart app that communicates with the sleeve.
I'm doing research for the launch now to determine which phones to support. If you guys could just share your thoughts that'd be great.
Namely:
Will you as a Samsung Galaxy s5 user invest in a new phone sleeve
Why do you/ dont you use existing portable chargers like powerbanks and Qi chargers
If you know any cool portable wireless chargers
I myself use a Nexus 4 with Qi built in but I haven't found a satisfactory wireless charging solution yet... that's kinda why I worked on my own. Thanks!
Looks very interesting. I'll be keeping an eye on this one.

Like it, but will it work with the phone in a case?
Thanks guys! So i take it you will be theoretically willing to get a phone sleeve for the s5? Yes it will work with your existing cases because i'm choosing stretchable materials for ampere, except maybe otterboxes, and the case also has to work with Qi wireless charging. I think lots of cases will espc since we're using a bigger coil.

I use wireless charging and I own power banks. Powerbanks are mostly annoying because of keeping up with cords. But it would be nice to have a small flip put Micro USB and USB for charging and discharging to devices that don't have wireless charging (like my fiancees phone) . Also, I haven't bought a current qi bank because of the fact I can't throw my phone in my pocket and just let it charge. Your solution, depending on the price and size, seems to take care of those concerns for me. I would definitely consider buying it.

YES that problem with portable Qi chargers is exactly what happened to me. I ended up bringing along a wire anyway so my phone could charge in the bag. Thanks for reminding me about that and for the support.

Yup, I personally have a Nexus 4 and was super-hyped to try wireless charging, only to find that most Qi products are absolutely rubbish beyond the novelty.
That's why I designed the sleeve to fix a lot of the heat dissipation, durability, looks, portability and alignment issues that plague Qi products. Please do leave your email on the website if you're interested! I'll contact you again just before launch in January.
make this a +1 for me also im IN .
If it will stretch to fit the Commuter Wallet, I'd think about dropping coin on it if the price is reasonable. My QI receiver works through the wallet case so that shouldn't be a problem. I personally find it much easier to carry a spare fully charged battery or two when the situation calls for it.

Actually, I wouldn't recommend you use wireless charging with wallets at that kind of proximity. It might interfere with your credit cards' magnetic strips.

Guys, thanks for the product validation thus far. Now, I need your feedback on the optional app. Here are the proposed features:
I'm doing research for the launch now to determine what features to incorporate in this app:
Display estimated battery life in hrs of phone and ampere
Control when charging starts
find your phone or ampere when one is missing
notifications to recharge at time or location
What other features would you like to see? I've recently posted in the S5 and Nexus 5 forums too, and I've been told not to dilute the product, which I agree with heartily. These are the features I've narrowed it down to. What other things do you think we need to bake in? It will probably be open to developers post-Kickstarter.
Feel free to check the product out over at http://kickstarter.novelsys.co.

I like it. I'll probably get one when you release it. I like the locator function as well. Does it have a wireless charging receiver also? (for charging the unit that is.)
I just went to amazon and bought the fonesalesman receiver and koolpad installed in 10 seconds and it works perfect. And I have one of the thickest phone cases from element case the recon pro.
I also bought a Qi charger for the car ...
After a week of using this I have put koolpad's in two other rooms in the house. It just works slick,
How would your sleeve work would I still be able to use any case I wanted ? This is a must, I must have the freedom to choose what case I want to use ?

Not any case I'm afraid. It should fit most soft cases and slim hard cases. It's really on a case by case basis. (see where I did there?) by Kickstarter, our testing will be more rigorously completed and I'll be able to say exactly to what thickness case Ampere can tolerate.

I'm afraid you'll have to charge Ampere via a MicroUSB. There's less benefit to charging Ampere wirelessly than your phone though.
So what do I need to fit on my phone to use this wirelessly?

already ordered, at $9, it's a no brainer. i'd previously ordered a pair of qi chargers (they were $11 shipped for both).

A Qi charger is only $15, plus Qi is the wireless charging standard for all other Android phones. If you get a PMA charger, it most likely won't work with your next phone.

The one we got is $9 and comes with a portable battery pack that can also be charged simultaneously with the S6 charging too. Also I don't care about what the standard is in 2 years because there will most likely be newer wireless charging technologies like Qi 2.0 or something and by then i'll probably get the newer technology. Also the S7 might also have a PMA/Qi combo again.

Do you know the specs on that portable battery pack? my guess is it's smaller than the battery in the S6, and charges incredibly slowly. I'm simply saying that for $5 more you can buy a wireless charger that will work with all newer wireless charging capable phones, instead of one that only works with the S6 or phones with specific cases.
I bought a Qi charger when the G2 came out, and not much has changed over the last 2 years, it still works and charges just as fast as any you can buy today. In fact, I believe they still sell that model.

try $5 LESS >> http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00QHRM4F4
I'll be testing them out and compare, but there's a review of Qi charging pads on the accessories forum, and this one was fairly well rated. They all charge the phone within 2-3min of each other, but when charging over night, that's largely irrelevant to me anyways.
I got two of the duracell powermats last week in black with the extra battery for the iphone 4. I pulled the circuit out of the iphone 4 case and will try to make it work with another phone

Hey so you got it to charge the S6? I ordered the same thing from Amazon but it wouldn't charge. Already sent it back. I tried different positions all over the pad. I will say that my S6 has a very thin Elago case on it, I didn't try without the case because that kind of defeats the purpose of "drop the phone on the pad and walk away".

Yes it charges a Verus and Rickle something (sorry can't remember) case. They are clear ones that have a back. I have a wallet case that holds three cards but it doesn't charge with that case
