Good and Bad News - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

So I have some good news, and some bad news(at least for some of you )
I ordered a white 32gb Nexus 5 last night, which means, I will be moving on... It's shipping by the 26th, so I have a few days left on the SGS4G, but after that, i'll be using my Nexus 5.
Well, this doesn't mean that i'll be selling my T959V
SO... where is the good news?
well, I'm working on bringing 4.4 to this phone
So you guys can be hoping that i get it working...
I might have that in depending on how much free time I have, but thanksgiving break is next week, so if I don't get it in this weekend, look forward to some progress over the break...
BUT... 4.4 will probably be the last thing I do for this phone(unless one of you guys still owns one when 4.5/5.0 comes out and you want to pm me to take a look at it)
Time to reminisce....
- I purchased the galaxy s 4g with a 2 year T-Mo contract on February 28, 2011...(yes the day it came out)...
-You may find it hard to believe, but I flashed a vibrant thing on this phone after being told by the T-Mo guy that it's essentially identical.
-----I was trying to get to the aosp lockscreen, and flashed a vibrant's framework-res.apk, soft bricking my phone....
-----Back then there was no custom recovery for our phone(other than people thinking that Vibrant's CWM would work)
-----I made no post about how to recover, since I wanted to use my brain to fix it.
-I started theming and learning the true insides of android...I had flashed custom roms back in the G1 days, but i didn't really know how anything worked.
-Then custom rom making, and Team Acid hating me
----- @GFX.myst. , are you interested in unblocking my FTP yet?...
-----I also owe an apology @bhundven
-----And @turtlepa I guess for being a whiny little b**ch
----- @noiphonehere what's up?
----- @RaverX3X sorry.
----- @FBis251, sorry as well
----- @m4xm4n, where are you?
----- if i forgot anyone, sorry.
-So yeah, it's been a rough journey, but I made it through, and I'm moving on
SEEYA LATER WITH 4.4 (unless Acid/ @DJLamontagneIII beats me to it)

I'm right here... lurking. And being uber busy.

I know how you feel.

This is a good time to mention this... I don't own this phone anymore. We had a good run since the summer of 2011. I learned a lot thanks to you guys but I'm currently trying to focus on other areas in my life and I've had to put a lot of personal projects on hold because of this.
It would be awesome to see Kit Kat on the SGS4G, primarily because it's meant to run well on devices with low ram. I'm sure it'll run smooth!

You know FB. You've contributed a lot to this community. Have a great time with whatever device you currently own, and good luck with your other things.

I now have a test build. Anyone interested? I don't know whether it works yet. Since I have to go get out my sgs4g. (my n5 came in the mail today). Also, I no longer have a working sim card for that.
so pm me or post here if interested.

actually, nvm, here's a test link... i can't promise that it boots... but if it does, it is probably functional....

Samething happened to me. I used Odin to restore the recovery. I was able to get back into recovery mode then, so I flashed the latest backup I made. The phone is once again operational.

nah it is just fine.. i always do that. that going to stock but not exactly that.
i use gremlin remover when i flash roms.
its gives me root and easily flash kernels and roms
the thing that i cannot do is to LOG/CATLOG sorry for being dumb ;/

any good news ?

I think he's waiting for someone to give him a logcat so he can actually make it boot.

@Fluidification, how else can we help in order to help you out here.aside logcats is there anything else?

[ROM-DEV] 04/16/10 | Back from the dead | Coming soon

Geek For Me is proud to announce:
Toast's Secret Sauce
From the developers who brought Eclair (Android 2.x) to the CDMA Hero
I'm confused about this post/rom
A lot of new HeroC users out there don't even remember a 2.1 before damage got the leaked RUUs. I actually ported it to the Hero way back in November of 2009 from a copy that had been ported to the GSM Hero. Myself, toast, and a couple of others then spent MONTHS getting everything working. We started with basically nothing at all and ended up with a near fully functioning rom, through the use of real dev work. Check the older posts at http://geekfor.me/android21/ for info on the previous work. I also went ahead and made this post using the old thread so that maybe people can get some history on it.
Can you tell me more about this?
I'll be staying tight lipped for the moment but what I will say is that this is marked as a dev rom for a reason. It is not going to be a 100% functioning rom and is made more as a proof of concept, and for fun. It is not meant as a daily rom for most users.
When will this be released?
Coming soon to a phone near you. We're still working on hammering out some bugs, and adding some features.
And a little teaser (benchmarks) :

Just make a nandroid backup and you'll be fine. lol. This doesn't modify anything that could possibly brick your phone. But yea... it's pretty to look at but doesn't do anything just yet. I can probably get wifi working and such but I don't know what my chances are of making it work on Sprint. I don't know if it even ties in to our radio.img at all and if it's compatible with 2.1.
Many thanks!
I will be flashing this momentarily but wanted to ask you generally what is involved in "porting" a ROM from GSM to CDMA. My naive understanding is that 1.6 and up are GSM/CDMA capable.
And I must admit (with a developer background in many flavors of *nix, particularly the open source varieties of Linux and BSD) I'm not sure I understand why Android is so device specific. Is it the device drivers for individual hardware, the radio? Chip/CPU architecture?
Thank again for the work, I'll let you know what happens!
Hey Flipz.
have you tried to load the modules from the 1.5 rom. ie the radio and all other pertinent modules for the cdma radoi
Tried it can't get past the boot screen. Waited for a crazy long time. You didn't say to do a Nandroid backup in your post, What should I do now? Just kidding, you know it's going to seriously be asked in a couple of posts though.
from the sceen shots i can most likely tell what the major issue is.(i.e. 2.6.27) lol... but hell yeah man!!! thanx fixin to flash now.
If you wait a seriously long time and it won't boot then you likely didn't do a wipe before you flashed the update. It will fail horribly and just keep looping on the startup screen.
I haven't done a single thing yet to try and get anything working other than getting it booting. I wanted to post it up here ASAP.
ah I didn't see to do a wipe, if I wipe the nandroid on the sdcard stays right? I assume it does but I'm going to copy to the copter to be safe. Thanks.

Yup. The wipe pretty much just clears from info from /data/. But having multiple backups is always a good thing!
ok man great... it boots. it takes a minute but it boots. ur right nothing works. maybe bluetooth but all i did was scan for devices. it scanned. but i dont got a bt device. anyhow im gonna charge my phone a bit an try to debug some issues. phone is dead so i gotta wait a few. but thanx again man... good work
oh yeah it booted after a wipe, I feel dumb, it's kind of cool to play arround. the two things I really wanted to see from the 2.1 where the pinch to zoom home screen trick that will zoom out and show all 7 homescreens at once. And the Landscape home screen. Oh well it's really cool to check it out on a CDMA device now after all the GSM brothers have been having fun.

[Fake-Unrooted-ROM] Why unroot? Flash this! Stock Froyo.

Returning your Evo anytime soon? Why unroot when you can just flash a completely plain Jane looking stock Froyo ROM that's lacking the Superuser apk? The geniuses over at Sprint or Best Buy will never be able to tell the difference. This is netarchy's HTC OTA Froyo 2.2, *FINAL*, build 3.36.651.6 (Rooted) Odexed ROM, the -only- thing that has been changed is the removal of the Superuser Permissions apk.
Wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache, then flash.

It goes further than just the rom...truth be told, there's a system they can actually look in to see what rom the phone is running...(I worked for Sprint), but I don't think they're smart enough to look at it...I'll post shots of what it looks like...sometime this week...I've been meaning to give a shout to all the Devs to add something that allows a person to make the Rom look stock...

Yeah, this ROM totally preys on the not so clever reps that work at stores like Sprint and Best Buy. No offense, of course. I actually returned my last Evo with a stock ROM that was still sporting the Superuser Permissions apk. They didn't catch that.10 times out of 9 they're not going to even know about rooting or what to look for to spot a rooted device.
Anyone working for them that wouldnt catch this, wouldnt catch a non stock rom no matter what it is. Anybody actually looking to tell if a phone is rooted will look for a custom recovery.

I highly doubt any rep is looking for a custom recovery, although that would be the thing to look for. But seeing the Superuser Permissions app might cause a rep to grow a brain and do some investigating, which could potentially lead to some problems returning your Evo, if you are in fact, returning it rooted. I'm just trying to circumvent some hassle by eliminating that possible hitch.
Sheer genius.

LOL even with a custom rom and boot screen Sprint took my phone back. Who cares? rooting doesn't effect your hardware so why would they even care? Flashing an official RUU undoes rooting for the most part anyway (minus unrevoked forever)
Thanks you saved me a hour before trading in my sons evo
Thx for that, you saved me from unrooting (again) and rooting my phone (again).
I have to take it to the service to fix my camera.

1st of all EVERYONE I worked with at Sprint and half of the upper management have rooted Evos, even rooted Epics. We know, we're not idiots you idiot
The reps aren't really going to care because the account that device was active on can get charged up to full retail for the new device if the Evo is discovered to be rooted. Most of the time these phones get recycled as refurbished replacement phones, and there's a simple check (a couple actually) to determine root, with or without Superuser. Got an e-mail about this from our service technicians about going into the About Phone section and how the phone betrays itself.
That and the bootloader screen shows S-Off at the top for most rooted Evo's which takes all of 60 seconds to check.
On a side note, it really is unlikely Sprint is wasting man-power checking every single evo coming in, especially with everyone trading up to the 3D. Just throwing it out there, YOU REALLY SHOULD JUST UNROOT the damn thing it's easy and could (possibly) spare you north of $450. I mean really, even if it takes an hour you theoretically made almost $500 an hour.

I'm pretty sure this method is intended primarily for those taking their phones in for service.
When actually sending the phone back to Sprint (to take advantage of their insurance, for example), a full unroot should always be done. That's where the technicians will be more likely to poke and prod.

well ive decided today that im putting mine up for sale on craigslist for full asking price and im going to go buy a new evo. this will be the last samsung i buy.
i was going to hold onto it and wait for the signal fix but once again today i went 90% of the time without a signal and my phone died in 7 hours at work. i need something that will last.
i wish you all luck!
so whos keeping it and whos not?

funny but there's nothing i can fix on a defective phone. anyways stay on topic please.
More spamming of this board with your complaining. The phone is not defective.. That definition would clearly mean hardware issues. You still fail to realize not everyone is suffering your issues. I understand that people are, and do believe all of you, but do not generalize something that has been clearly said it's not happening to all consumers that own the device. But again STOP spamming this board and others with your negativity. You have been saying for a week now that you got that device on an upgrade and were still in the 30 day window for return. So why wouldn't you just return it and get another device? Sounds to me someone is lying.
Just to add.. My Nexus S is flawless and I love my device. Wouldn't trade it for another phone.
Love my NS4G. I wouldn't trade it for anything but another nexus. I can live with some signal issues. I'm sure sprint will come through.

Just go already, why do you insist on badmouthing this device? I'm sorry you seem to have a defective one but its really falling on deaf ears posting your rants here. Do you really think sprint Samsung or Google even read this stuff? And another thing...these forums are visited by a very small percentage of folks who own theses devices...so starting something here is not effective. You need to hassle them on twitter or android central ....
On topic, I love this device and am committing to Google backed devices from here on out. I am so sick of all the carrier bloatware on the other ones. I am also one who swore off Samsung after having a moment and then an epic but changed my tune when I heard the Google nexus was coming to sprint, I was toying with the idea of switching carriers just for it but now I have the best of both worlds IMO.....so please stop with the pity party already and move on, no need to rain on our parade because you have no patience to let things get resolved like returning the phone and getting another one maybe...this device isn't even a month old, you do know how long it took HTC to get the evo straightened out right?
Sorry for my rant but I've been watching your posts for a while now and not saying anything so maybe its my fault for penting it up....
Long live aosp!

Dude, that is WAY outside the numbers that EVERYONE who claim to be experiencing signal issues are encountering. There is clearly something above and beyond what others are experiencing going on with your handset. I can't remember if/how many times you swapped it out but I would probably try that first/again.
My NS4G fluctuates between 0% and 1% time without a signal. It never fails to connect and pass data. The 3G and especially 4G speeds are just slower...that's all. The battery lasts well over 12 hours of solid usage.
Right now I'm on the fence about returning it...not for this issue but because I am considering the Evo 3d instead.
Apparently you guys arent visiting the sprint forums. I meant i had zero bars almost 90% of the time today. Do some research before you critize anyone. And no i dont hate the phone i just hate the issues.
If i hated it i wouldnt of published a theme for you guys.

I really like the phone but yeah signal problems are killing me right now. Especially with WiFi. If I move one room away from my router my WiFi signal drops to 1 bar.
I really cant complain about phone signal as I really have not used the phone much...what I can say is...it works when I need it. I think I will just hang on till the EVO 3D comes out...hopefully the E3D wont be plagued with bugs (crosses fingers).

Id wait for the 3d too but it looks as it will be another month before it comes. I do know ill never buy a phone at launch again. Ill give it a few months. Im sure the 3d will have bugs too and probbably bad battery life.
I think the reason for my current bad battery is because of a bad signal. I just cannot see this being a sprint network issue.

i was going to hold onto it and wait for the signal fix but once again today i went 90% of the time without a signal and my phone died in 7 hours at work. i need something that will last.
i wish you all luck!
so whos keeping it and whos not?

You want a phone that will last but you are getting an Evo? I came from the Evo and it was, without a doubt, the buggiest phone I've ever had. It was also a battery hog. I don't think you will be pleased with it if you don't like the Nexus S.
Have you tried swapping it out yet?

Apparently you guys arent visiting the sprint forums. I meant i had zero bars almost 90% of the time today. Do some research before you critize anyone. And no i dont hate the phone i just hate the issues.
If i hated it i wouldnt of published a theme for you guys.

Definitely keeping mine, I'm very happy with it.
I personally think something fishy is going on with him. He mentioned countless times this was an upgrade and was still in his 30 day window until like June 8th or something. So why not return to get the upgrade back? I think he is just trolling and lying about all this. Another reason why he wouldn't show the phone having problems in his crappy video he made. He just would beat the bush and say he couldn't. lol

Yeah the evo at first had a ton of bugs but now with the latest cm7 it seemed to work fine for me. There are some bugs I'm sure but I have not run into them while using cm7 and evo.

I call BS. I've been all over every forum regarding this issue and no one but you is claiming to be without a signal 90% of the time. Like I said, you are having a unique problem that might be solved by a hardware swap.

Done with LG

LG can kiss my ass. After over 2 hours of trying to upgrade the damn baseband the tool still keeps messing up. This is insane. They should have gotten it right the first time. I'm done with LG. Notice the time lapse of my second attempt to upgrade this ****. ICS is more stable on my htc hd2. I'm pretty sure I'm now soft bricked. Good luck to the rest of you dealing with this nightmare of a phone. I'll be using my hd2 till I order a galaxy nexus. Also if you know what the problem could be please let me know. I have all of the drivers and its a brand new windows 7 pc I'm using.

Did you reboot both items and make sure you follow directions to the "T" in the threads for this stuff. Also look into other ways. And finally this didn't need its own thread lol, but I understand the need to vent, again read through the threads and you'll see people having your issue and then you'll probably find your solution. Also make sure you are bone stock recovery and all I can't remember if that was a problem or not for some.

You could try the kdz app. Also upgrading the bb breajs bluetooth in every rom except stock. I actually upgraded mine and ended up down grading with kdz. New bb is only good if you stay stock or dont need bluetooth calling at all.
I know i was just curious to see how much it would improve the device. I know its only for gps but i was just curious. Anyway, ill look into flashing cwm tomorrow and just keeping the july baseband. I was just pissed because there is only so many errors a person can take before they vent. Thanks guys. I noticed that the ics roms are solvong data drops. Hopefully it becomes more useful to me.

Dont let it fool you, the new bb doesnt help gps, it still sucks. The only improvement it gave is that i was told i sounded louder to someone on the other end than i did on the old bb.
The newer bb also breaks bluetooth unless they fixed that. I'd stay away from the newer bb (maybe that's only on the ICS roms).
But I 100% agree with you, this phone should've been recalled. It would've been 1000x better for LG to cut their losses and recall the phone than to ruin their entire image for themselves. See you on the other side of this P.O.S. Goodluck!
Also disable any firewalls/antivirus. I was having similar trouble until I disabled everything.
Thanks. Yeah it sucks because this phone has a lot of potential but ****ty support. Maybe ill try disabling it and going for one more try. But i think im just gonna stick with the old baseband.
New bb is good in my opinion, but not really worth changing. To much risk for a phone that will eventually have little support, but the devs we do have are awesome and they support the new bb. Love my g2x,but can't wait to upgrade.

I got my G2x the day it was released. I was so excited... All went down hill from there. I appreciate all the devs that worked on our phones, but today I ordered a nexus. I just can't take it anymore.

If you are asking me, no. I have tried them all. I'm currently on CM7, it's the best on my phone. It still had lots of issues though.

I think it's about time for me to move on from the G2X. Too many problems still after all this time. Maybe the SGS3 will suit me better.

Nvdia too
The biggest barrier, IMO, is Nvidia's refusal to release driver code or binaries to support the chipset that runs our phone's graphics. I for one am not buying Nvidia's stuff again.

T-Mobile LGV10 H901 MM ~ V10_H901_V20E_DeOdexed_Build_007-signed by Eliminater74 ~ Unofficial TWRP 3.0.2 ~ Xposed version 85
So, I wonder how Google is going to work out the system partition issue for devices that weren't designed to run dual systems when an update occurs? Interesting thing to consider.
This is all nonsense. The update will come out when it comes out. There are a number of factors that go into the release of an update, none of which can be accurately measured.

Google has already said that seamless updates aren't coming to current and older Nexus devices (http://www.androidpolice.com/2016/0...e-new-seamless-update-feature-from-android-n/), so I wouldn't expect for any pre-2016/7 device.
Rubbish.
Nougat is incoming according to the T-Mobile website. It will probably be a month or two before it becomes approved and and T-Mo put their bloat on it. But If the website is anything to go by, then yes the V10 is confirmed to receive 7.0. Strange that the G4 will not be getting it...

But can we root 7.0?

One thing is true though. LG is one of the fastest to roll out major updates. I recall from my LG G4 was that it was the first phone to receive MM apart from Nexus.
This time around also the G5 is probably their priority. Once LG rolls it out then, T-Mobile is also gonna take their time. So it's gonna take a while.

so on a side note, my v10 just crapped out on me, similar boot loop of death like the g4, i feel like it has a bad ground, it randomly was on charge and started to vibrate continuously and screen froze, i have 3 batterys i tried those but fail, i have really good and bad wires and tried those, some let it into twrp without touch working and some wire allow to twrp with touch working for short time b4 reboot freeze, and one wire allowed to twrp with touch but twrp touch was slow af. literally like 1 hour ago. trying to get my files off internal :/ good day turned to crap, thanks LG
There's really no use in speculating when we'll get 7.0. It'll happen when it happens. We probably won't get it until early next year, so not soon. We definitely won't get it when the v20 does, since it's LG's new darling, and they said it would be the first major Android phone to get Nougat. So of course they want it to be exclusive at first. Hell, LG might even change their mind and leave use stuck with Marshmallow. The v10 is already pretty much dead where development is concerned, why bother continuing to update an older device when there are better things ahead? Looking back on it, had I known in advance that the v10 wouldn't have much development, I probably wouldn't have bought it. This is my first LG and maybe my last. But it still works so I'm going to hold onto it until it dies. Lesson learned, life moves on.

i feel you man, been looking into google pixel or the one plus 4, they look promising
Article says that it is coming to the Korean version second half of this year... maybe that means the rest of us will get it at some point as well even if not officially?

I think so. We will get it somehow. Even if it is the last update I'm fine with it. At least well get some closure and hopefully the software will be similar to the V20. Perhaps the Vietnamese Rom cookers will do a port. I'm using the H960 20m port on my H901.
Second half of the year seems a bit long to wait but maybe there will be a working version of xposed for nougat by then.
It's coming:
