I want to start a bounty (if there is even any interest for this?) to disable the screen brightness throttling.
Now of course I understand people say "oh it will damage your phone" but you know what, so will overclocking your processor and graphics etc.
My problem is that whilst not even doing intensive tasks, my screens maximum brightness lowers, apparently due to temperature throttles. It is really frustrating because sometimes the phone does not even feel hot, and I'm not even using the phone intensively.
Even if there is no interest in this, I'd happily pay someone to increase the temperature throttle for brightness reduction.

Maybe you have it set for automatic. I have have my auto setting turned off and set to full brightness. It has never changed or become dimmer and I play a rather demanding game for an hour or more at a time.

I definitely have auto brightness off. It's a known fact it thermal throttles the brightness. Perhaps you live in Antarctica?

It happens on the Snapdragon model 9005 when auto brightness is off, brightness is set to max and under heavy load. Even worse if you are charging the device at the same time.
There are other threads confirming brightness throttle.
Hell, I even got a message in brightness settings to say it.

yes, brightness (and CPU) throttling on ALL N9005 devices is fact, although some perform better (later throttling) and some not, which maybe has something to do with CPU-binning (search for that, the higher the number the lesser the voltage, less voltage means less leaking current > lower temp under load) i'm sure this is kernel related, so theoretically it should be no problem to disable it with a custom kernel!
due to "display problems" i switched through 6 devices, 2 of them were noticeable better in regards of throttling... as always with consumer devices: it's a bit "luck of the draw" which device you get...
I have to agree with the others, I have never seen that message in normal use. The only time I ever experienced that message was when my phone was in a car holder on the windscreen and it was 34 Celsius outside on holiday. For example, I could play a game in my home (in the UK where it is currently much cooler) on full brightness and never have any noticeable problem with brightness throttling.

The throttle will only activate if you have the screen brightness at 100%, a quick workaround would be to set the screen brightness to 99%.

Please, plug in your phone, play a game for an hour at full brightness and tell me what happens.
Not ten mins. An hour gaming. The message is there in brightness settings. This is not a fault, Samsung created this!

Well I guess the issue her is that mine is not a 9005, but a 900A.
So that might have some bearing as I run mine at 100% brightness all the time and at nigh as I am going to bed i play Valkyrie Crusade on the charger and have never seen any flicker or dimming in video brightness.
I just this weekend played NFS: Most Wanted for more than three hours straight with at least 2 hours on the charger and all at full brightness and never saw this. I am sure because I usually use auto brightness but don't like it shifting brightness whilst playing a game and changed it back as soon as I was done. The thermostat in my flat is usually set at 23.
Also like I said, its not like I have never seen the message, just in vastly more strenuous situations than you are describing which again makes me think you have a hardware fault making this problem occur more frequently.
Let's see if someone else can replicate your problem in similar circumstances to see if it is a more widespread issue.

I was using a LG optimus G pro before this one, in my opinion the bright is poor in this phone vs for example S4 or LG. So , will be very interesting get a solution meaby by kernel or similar to get more bright. I offert another 10$ if anyone can developed any thing in this direction.. thanks in advance

Buy the n900 (exynos).. it doesen't have that issue
I've read many threads about this issue and I guess that it persists only on SM-N9005 Snapdragon devices. I live in Greece and in summer when temperatures are really high, the thermal throttling issue becomes really annoying especially when gaming, because thermal throttling affects screen brightness, CPU clocks and GPU clocks too! For those who don't believe this, here's a screenshot of my N9005 when overheated.

I'm in the US, with a rooted N3, 900t. stock kernal and ROM, and have also experienced the brightness flicker/throttle.
I've noticed it under varying circumstances, but yes, most frequently when plugged in and surfing web.
I have Xposed framework installed, with a CPU temp display module. Based on what I've noiticed, the dim happens around 146-150 degrees farenheit. Most games, however, will not allow the dim to occur.
There is also another Xposed module I have been using with mixed results called DVS disabler. It will randomly keep the screen from dimming at temps as high as 167 degrees farenheit! (at that temp, i can feel the heat coming off the screen at almost an inch away)
Side-thought::: I have a 'tempered glass' screen protector on that may/may not be affecting the whole temperature thing. not certain.
I get this issue too... Sometimes not even doing anything that intensive... Hopefully it's a simple kernel tweak.

Move to a colder climate.
Yep, this phone runs a little hot because it's running at 1.2GHz and has a giant screen, so if you turn the brightness all the way up and go out and use it in the blazing sun for a while it will overheat and reduce the brightness. Hasn't happened to me yet, but not surprising that it would. I've even seen iPhones pop up overheating warnings when used out in direct sunlight at max brightness for a little while.

Your picture looks like Stephen Hyde from "That 70s Show..."
I've found I had to move my car holder for the phone to a shaded spot of the car rather than higher up on the dash because it was getting fairly hot, especially while charging.
This phone's so thin and such a huge screen, I'm pretty sure it's a common issue

The temperature in my city is around 40°C.. But real-feel is around 42°C...Summer has just started and my phone is getting hotter than usual... However, the phone is not so hot in idle mode... Its around 31-33°C.. However, after playing few games or browsing for around 20-25 mins, my nexus s is getting hotter and hotter.. I can feel it in my hands... But still, the battery temp is showing 36-37°C only... I've never even seen 38°C on my phone... But still, I can feel the touchscreen is getting very very hot...
After opening the back cover, I began examining myself.. I noted:
The battery is not that hot
The sim area is very hot (I even started my phone without the SIM card, but same result)
The area beneath the camera and flash is also too hot..
The touchscreen itself is getting v.v hottttt.... I cannot play touch games anymore... However, the lower part of the touchscreen is absolutely normal...
When charging, the temperature doesn't goes more than 35°C... However, I can feel the back side is warmer...
2months ago, when the temp was around 30-32°C, I've never had this problem Everything was fine and running perfectly... Still now, everything runs smoothly without lags
I've never heard that touchscreen is hott... I've had many phones and my city's temp remains mild mostly... So, what could be the problem?

Its normal dude. If you want to keep it cooler than don't keep the brightness too high.
One thing that can REALLY heat up my phone is playing games at 100% brightness on a hot day so try to avoid that.

No dude the same areas as you describe are the ones that can get really hot on my phone.
My i9023 gets really hot if i play games at max brightness, so now I avoid playing games.
And yes, it also gets hot in the processor area, not the battery.

Now, my phone is getting very hot while playing Asphalt 6 or even Fruit Ninja... Only the processor side (Top portion of touchscreen and its back portion) is getting hot... Battery is definitely cool (Not more than 38degree)...
What could be the problem? My processor has gone mad or what? I've even tried undervolting as well as processing speed to 800Mhz max... But overheating remains

This is absolutely true. I have Nexus S since 4 months... There was no problem at all then.. everything normal and running fine and never overheated at all no matter what i play...
This overheating problem started few days back when I tested overclocking and overvolting NS
Seem's this is the problem..
I think I have roasted the processor and it will always remain like that.. I will have to sell it soon now

I went to the local market for some inspection of my phone. The person said that your phone is not giving maximum current and the charging ic is getting very hot and has to be changed... How is this possible? I've never had any problem with my phone like this... 100% charging was always OK for me
I am running cm9(beast mode wifi calling one ) atm but I have a heat issue with my phone around the camera and speaker area where the phone is really hot but by the battery n bottom half it is much cooler.

i think that the reason why it heat up is because you overclocking it?
when i set it max it really heat up quickly.
Install betterbatterystats and see how much CPU you are using and on what.

That's a 'feature' of the ICS+ kernels. While 100MHZ is the minimum, if it's actually set to that, the kernel is set to go back to 200MHZ anytime it gets the chance. You can watch this happen if your scheduler/governor app actually updates on current min/max speeds. ROM Toolbox PRO, SetCPU, ROM Control, and CM's Performance controls all display this shifting, though with luck you can sometimes get it to stick at 100MHZ. It just takes some persistence.
The modem on the phone isn't very good.
It even happens on stock where if you go in and out of dead zones, it will "SEARCH" for network and become burning hot, so it's a common problem that happens year round. It's a great way to kill battery. That's also why if you leave you phone in a sock drawer, it's going to last longer than if it's in your pocket walking around.

I never got my phone to go into deep sleep when I selected ondemand (or maybe it was ondemandx). I would try a couple of the other governors & see if that would help.

OndemandX gives me good sleep, but forces the phone to minimum speeds when the screen is off. That tends to cause issues if I'm trying to use GPS or music without the screen burning.
As to what will work best... that depends on unique your phone, its apps, any tweaks that have been made, and your specific combination of scheduler/governor settings. I'm a fan of SIO, but sometimes the tweaks make that (and deadline) stick at max MHZ, in which case noop is great. At various times, I go with any of the SA2-based 'intelligent' options (SavagedZen, brazilianwax, SmoothAss, or SmartAssv2) or the OndemandX/Conservative basic sets. The others have gotten stuck more often and tended to allocate more processor than I think it needs.
I've always had the best luck with smartassv2. I think it's a good tradeoff between good battery life and quick processor speedups in order to prevent lag, plus I haven't had the issue of the processor locking up while the screen is off.

That's usually the one I always fall back on too despite new ones all the time and everything, it's my default now on any ROM.
I have the brightness turned almost all the way down then I turn it on auto. Is this the correct way to set it? It seems very bright even set so low.

It definitely is too bright, i agree. I'm just putting together a nice setup for the Lux app, and hope that Google will make it a little less aggressive and therefor more battery-friendly

They were outside in California during the summer in the day and in an overly bright and cheerful Google headquarters during the night. They forget not everywhere has retina burning light levels
I've noticed that iOS, Touchwiz and a few other vendor Android skins implement a sliding-scale auto-brightness: You can enable auto, but also slide the overall average brightness up and down. This is a simple solution for varying comfort levels: Brightness fiends can tune the auto higher and those with sensitive eyes can tune it lower. I am surprised stock Android has yet to implement this.
I found auto brightness to be a bit erratic. I'm sticking with manual brightness.

Have any of you had your brightness fluctuate from higher to lower? I don't remember the n4 doing that only. I thought android only went from low to high.
I actually want the opposite. I set my brightness all the way high in manual but I hate that automatic dimming. Can I get that fix? All I want is to work like my HTC One where I set the brightness all the way high and never saw the screen dim itself automatically. Please help

Yeah, and i hate that. I am not battery crazy like some other users, all i want is a bright screen regardless what time of the day it is. 100% brightness all the time. Can Auto brightness be turned off? Otherwise, and I hate to say it, but will going back to the One until this gets fixed.

only 100% can present the true white color

+1 for Lux. I had the battery-guzzling HTC Amaze ("you'll be AMAZED how fast your phone dies!" ). Lux would almost double my battery life when I programmed it with ultra-conservative (but still usable) settings.
If Google will update the auto brightness calibration everyone will start seeing much better battery life.

The trick is in setting up the profiles by hand, the automatic profile settings can be wonky.
Take some light measurements in dimmes light and establish the lowest level you can accept the screen. On an N5 this is probably all the way min. (At first you may find that it's pretty dim but Realize that you'll get used to this and later wonder why you liked the screen so bright.)
Then go into bright light and find the min level that you can accept. This might be all the way bright (on my Amaze, all the way bright was unnecessarily bright EVEN IN SUNLIGHT).
Then take a reading in a normal room and find the min acceptable brightness. This may still be all the way min.
You may want to sample a point or two in other light levels, usually 3-5 samples is enough if you suss out the power curve correctly.
Everyone loves iPhone battery life... ever notice how conservative an iPhone's auto brightness setting is? I'll go out on a limb and guess that, if the N5 is as aggressively bright in auto mode as everyone says (don't have mine yet), there's the possibility of getting an entire extra hour of SOT just by switching instead to very conservative auto-brightness settings.
Also if the min brightness is still pretty darn bright, there's a really good chance an update can knock that brightness down and stretch the battery even further.

Wherever I see in the forums people only talk about the value in green box and they think that device is relatively cooler even under heavy load. But gotta say man the device heats up worse than my G4 even in minor load when referring to the values in the red box as you said. I wanna know is there something up with my device alone. What does you CPU Temp. reading after about 15 mins of heavy game session like with 'NFS No Limits' in your device in AIDA64? PLease post a screenshot
I don't play games on the phone. I tried a few just to make sure the phone is OK when gaming but in 5 minutes I got bored.
My phone gets hot, 75 Celsius when updating several apps, or right after an OTA.
I think this is normal, as I changed the first phone ( display issue ) and both reached the same temperatures in similar situations.

Oh! Thanks for the reply. This is the first time using glass/metal phone, maybe that's why I'm very sensitive to this problem. Is that a S7(flat)? Never had seen anything above 60C.
Yes, simple s7, not edge.
One time got very hot in my pocket, for no apparent reason.
But in battery stats I noticed that Google services percentages increased from 6 to 16, in about 20 minutes. This happens also on g4, about once or twice a week. It lasts from 10 minutes to a half hour, or I restart the phone and no more issues for a while.
It's hard to catch the s7 above 70 Celsius, I guess the cooling system does it's job really fast. We need an app to monitor and record temperature changes in the background. The only one I know about is CPU temp, but is not showing real CPU temperatures, it's fake.

Got the same situation (temp around 65-70 degrees) especially when updating apps by play store. Its getting hot on the back near the camera. But when updating is done temperatures are very fast dropping to 30-40 degrees. I think it's normal for this kind of device, made from glass and metal. Would be greatful for more observations from you guys. Cheers.

Yeah, Most app in the place store aren't able to read the actual temperature from the S7. Maximum I've seen with those are 38C in ~20 min session of gaming. As I said haven't seen S7 anywhere near 70C but near 61C in AIDA64 but after ~20 min session of gaming. It does take about 5 mins to completely cool down. Don't know it's normal. Is it!?

As you can see from all the below linked videos, the temperature never crosses 40C in any testing under heavy load. But how can we get 60C, 70C and all. They are even saying device isn't much hot. How is that even posssible?

I have no idea what and how they tested, the fact is that mine got very hot a few times. I only check temps when I feel the phone hot, and that was only when updating some apps, right after the OTA restart.
The temps from a gun are going to be lower than the core sensor reading. Always.
Is this gun any good for external testing ? I almost bought it

Seems like a local item. May not give you accurate readings but it's up to you. If you want a good one try Amazon.

Here are something based on my recent tests and findings,
The problem is when the device is under heavy load(NFS No Limits game). therm_zoneX values goes upto 61C, which I don't care if the device is still not much hot to hold in hand but it isn't. Compared to my LG G4 it gets hot soon for the same amount of load based on my tests. And makes me unpleasant of the fact that the I can't enjoy the amazing performance of gaming in this phone not even longer when compared to the HTC & LG phones I had. Even simple tasks like switching between Whatsapp and Tapatalk in the background for almost 5 min made the device unusually warm while there isn't anything else heavy running in the background. All these is considering the fact that my room temperature isn't very hot. What is your opinion?
I think the below attached images(4) will help you understand it better on the temp. variations on various tasks and where do I feel it warm/hot. I strongly believe it's unusual based on my experience in previous 5 years with various devices. Do you observe something similar. Please have a look.
PS: The NFS No Limits temp. readings were similar to someone who posted in the different thread.
Is 34°C on average/light use good?
36-37°C when updating apps and using the phone at the same time
