Seeing as how we don't haves cpu temp monitor, can someone enlighten me on what is considered to hot? At what point should I get worried?

Not sure, playing riptide for an hour at 1.6 highest i've seen the xoom get was 42C.

So today..... I woke up and my Xoom was under a pillow. It was AMAZINGLY hot, checking the battery temp was over 150F and the screen wouldn't power on (overclocked to 1.6). EDIT: Check the battery temp after it powered on.....
I did a power + Vol up to restart and it turns out the battery had no charge, charged it up and its working fine now. Still cant believe it got that hot though..... Only time will tell how it works in the future but I may have just done a really sound heat test?!
Hopefully not too sad of a day in the life of my Xoom!

My CPUMaster widget displays cpu temp. You can set a temperature profile which can reduce clock speed if the temp reaches a pre-determined level.

I have done alot of reading on this subject and could fill a whole page on explaining it, here is the short version. I am a power user and oc to 1.6, have my xoom in a enclosed case (no ventilation) and I have to work very hard to get my temp to 98. F. If you are seeing temps 98+ temps without heavy, heavy use then there may be a problem somewhere.

I'm trying to set up a profile for setcpu. What would be a good limit for heat on the g2x before it overheats?
I say anything above 110°-115° I live in phoenix az that's under stating for most places though lol

Honestly 110 is kind of low. When I had a g2x (during winter) I never saw over 108, but my other phone has been as high as 127 while playing a CPU intense game plugged in in the middle of summer. Shoot, I know all that's measured on a phone is battery temp, but on a laptop 140 processor temp is perfectly acceptable.

Tegra does not thermal throttle itself until about 70°C IIRC
now, letting it get that high on a regular basis is not the best thing for the cpu or the battery.
If your gonna set a profile, I'd recommend 60°C
my phone used to hit that every day when i was doing some hardcore multitasking.

That's crazy, I would never let my phone get that hot, the stock battery is only rated for 45c but again I am paranoid we are using LG hardware afterall

That is nowhere near a "safe temperature "
That is a omg my phone is 1337 haxxor pwning multitask your mom and my mom fast. Running any electronics at or close to their maximum heat/mv limits for prolonged periods of time will cause your phone to live fast and die young
Side note: My 3500mah and 1900mah batteries maximum temp is 50°c and when using them I adjust my setcpu profile accordingly although they tend to run cooler anyways...

Agreed, that just sounds like asking for all the cheap glue and poor solder job to fall apart. I wouldn't get that close if I notice my battery is any where near 120° I take the battery out and let it cool down...

When I first got my g2x I went through 2 lemons with bad hardware before the one I use now.
Even being counter active and setting your temp limit a little lower and then setting the profile Max CPU frequency a little higher may be a good idea you get a audible warning when you hit your temp limit (in setcpu) so might as well take advantage

Its funny how when i had the G2X, everytime i put it to charge it would get burning hot, now that i got a iPhone 4 it has no heating problems at all Okay let the Apple suxxx comments begin but we all know the iPhone is a better phone overall

That's cpu temp, allot of that dissipates by the time it gets to the battery. Yeah, running hot causes the life of electronics to shorten, but I'm not keeping this phone for more than 2 years at most, and batteries are cheap
Like i said, tegra is alright till 70, i get nervous around 60-65 your battery temps should not be any higher than about 50-60 (but that's just a guess)
I'd your setting up an emergency overheating profile I'd still recommend 60° but if you're hitting that too much you might want to tone down the oc in general
Don't worry about the solder tho, that won't melt till around 100° or higher

While Tegra is alright up to 70°C, I get skittish when I am required at some places to leave my cell phone in the car, which (in Houston) can get up to 60-65°C inside when parked in full sun. I personally recommend keeping it below 50°C as much as possible.

treat your phone like a child, please dont leave it locked in glove boxes or cars in the sun... or on a table in direct sunlight. (the sun is hot!)

I've been having some problems with my battery temperature...
Usually when I'm not using my phone the temperature stays around 27C. But when I use a small app like messaging for a minute or so it shoots up to about 35C or more.
Another thing is that when I keep my phone for charging it's temperature rises upto 55C or more. Once it went to 60C.
Is this normal or is my battery faulty?
Btw for the battery stats I use Minimalist Text.
I'm on the MIUI ROM by TheFrankenstain. Overclocked to 1.2ghz.
Any input will be helpful. Thanks.

My battery goes up to 55 degrees during charge .. That and the other temperature's are fine.. But touching 60 is abnormal..
Heavy usage during charge is not recommended, and specially with overclock will screw up ur device..

Dont set phone freq to 1.2 ghz always. While charging keep max freq to 800 mhz & min 300 mhz.
Charge, overclock & play an online game over wifi all at the same time and you'll fry your phone dude...

When your phone is not in use and not charging: around 33C and below is completely normal.
When your phone is in charge but not in use: around 40C and below is normal.
When your phone is in use but not charging: then 40C and below is normal depending on what you're running. it may go up to 45C depending on your kernel and max CPU frequency and also how heavily an app consumes resources e.g high graphic games (it also depends on the weather ).
In Summary: 35C and below is completely normal when NOT in use, 45C and below is normal when in use, 50C+ is quiet dangerous in any condition especially when not in use, 60C + Immediately stop using your phone and you'll wanna head to the freezer fast and change your battery or phone.
Always remember: NEVER use you phone while charging.

Actually it got automatically Overclocked when I flashed the MIUI ROM. Any Overclocking app was not installed, so I installed setcpu to make profiles for charging. But problems started to occur after that. So I uninstalled it and those problems disappeared. Well I checked with an app. It remains on 1.2ghz only 14%.
Maybe the temperature is due to the summer. 33C outside.
Anyways I've come up with my own way to keep my phone cool. I place it on a wet cloth. And that does help.

just go easy on the overclocking thing, it might fry your phone you can also try opening the back cover while it charge it's what i do sometimes when my s2 goes reeeally warm -.-

Ok. But i don't keep the cloth that much wet. Anyways it was due to the overclocking. I flashed the stock rom back and everything was back to normal. Except one little thing. Well that thing needs another thread. I'll not discuss it here.
I'm having the same problem. Just this morning, I was charging my phone and left it under my pillow. I wasn't even using it and when I came back to check my emails it was hella hot! My phone usually gets hot when I'm using it heavily and even more when I'm charging + playing games but this morning was different. I almost thought it's dead lol. I was running cm7. now I'm using miui GB based, phone still overheats but not like before.

Custom rom/kernel is main reason of overheating and others misunderstoods. Keep that in mind :thumbup:

My s3 gets hot so fast. I'll be looking at tweets or browsing pulse and BAM. I don't even want to hold it, its so hot. Yes I am on a custom ROM, cm10 to be specific but this happens to me on stock as well. My governor setting are default for the rom, no custom kernels installed. What do you guya recommend? Should I return it and will vzw accept it?

Install system tuner and that will give you cpu temps. I can't think off hand of any apps except wifi tether for root users that will give you a battery temp.
Before I got a case I thought my phone was getting way too hot, turns out it was no where near dangerous levels but it was hotter than other phones I've had. It's just a thing with the S3.
I'm not sure what could be wrong but just want to throw in that my phone does not get hot at all, it doesn't even get a little warm, and I use my phone quite a bit, pulse is one of my favorites, I play a couple games etc. I am stock but was running CM10 and my phone never got hot.
Sorry I couldn't help just wanted to let you know that simply using your phone shouldn't make it hot, not sure why yours is like that.

What temperatures are in the "redzone" as far as the phone's safety. I'm Overclocked and will sometimes get up to about 120F, but have seen it get as high as 130 before.
To the OP, can you give us any numbers? I use System Tuner to find out mine.

The 4g is one of the biggest culprits for heat. My phone heats right up if I'm tethering or downloading directly. And I imagine there's a lots of back and forth data with Twitter along with the other browsing he mentioned.

Those temps are fine. If I have my phone plugged in and tethering I've seen low 150s. I usually try to cool it down at that point but just so it won't go higher. I've been told that 160f shouldn't hurt it.

Awesome! Thanks! My old laptop would often get up to almost 200, in fact it would idle around 180, but I was pretty sure the phones would withstand far less due to the fact that it is in a much smaller package and that there is no heatsink, I just wasn't sure how high it can go.

A CPU is a CPU pretty much. The heatsink just helps keep the temp down. Equivalent of taking the back of our phone and putting a fan on it almost.
Critical temp is around 180. Our phones will automatically shut down

Lol kindve dangerous if your not careful but I put my phone in a airtight zip lock back and ran cold water on the outside, cooled down pretty quickly. Dont let water touch the zip part of course, but maybe another option.

Thanks for the tip! i've been having the same concerns. I'll be downloading the system tuner software to keep an eye on the heat.
Noticed change to phones ability to take a charge
I had my phone get quite hot the other day after I switched to cleanrom 6.5 and now the phone doesn't want to take a charge like it did before. Could that be some indication of some damage done?
I didn't have the frame of mind to check the temp at the time. It was noticeable hot though. Even through the case.

I would advise against that. at the very least use room temp water, not cold. sudden temp changes are never good. could induce cracking in the glass or other components
I want to start a bounty (if there is even any interest for this?) to disable the screen brightness throttling.
Now of course I understand people say "oh it will damage your phone" but you know what, so will overclocking your processor and graphics etc.
My problem is that whilst not even doing intensive tasks, my screens maximum brightness lowers, apparently due to temperature throttles. It is really frustrating because sometimes the phone does not even feel hot, and I'm not even using the phone intensively.
Even if there is no interest in this, I'd happily pay someone to increase the temperature throttle for brightness reduction.

Maybe you have it set for automatic. I have have my auto setting turned off and set to full brightness. It has never changed or become dimmer and I play a rather demanding game for an hour or more at a time.

I definitely have auto brightness off. It's a known fact it thermal throttles the brightness. Perhaps you live in Antarctica?

It happens on the Snapdragon model 9005 when auto brightness is off, brightness is set to max and under heavy load. Even worse if you are charging the device at the same time.
There are other threads confirming brightness throttle.
Hell, I even got a message in brightness settings to say it.

yes, brightness (and CPU) throttling on ALL N9005 devices is fact, although some perform better (later throttling) and some not, which maybe has something to do with CPU-binning (search for that, the higher the number the lesser the voltage, less voltage means less leaking current > lower temp under load) i'm sure this is kernel related, so theoretically it should be no problem to disable it with a custom kernel!
due to "display problems" i switched through 6 devices, 2 of them were noticeable better in regards of throttling... as always with consumer devices: it's a bit "luck of the draw" which device you get...
I have to agree with the others, I have never seen that message in normal use. The only time I ever experienced that message was when my phone was in a car holder on the windscreen and it was 34 Celsius outside on holiday. For example, I could play a game in my home (in the UK where it is currently much cooler) on full brightness and never have any noticeable problem with brightness throttling.

The throttle will only activate if you have the screen brightness at 100%, a quick workaround would be to set the screen brightness to 99%.

Please, plug in your phone, play a game for an hour at full brightness and tell me what happens.
Not ten mins. An hour gaming. The message is there in brightness settings. This is not a fault, Samsung created this!

Well I guess the issue her is that mine is not a 9005, but a 900A.
So that might have some bearing as I run mine at 100% brightness all the time and at nigh as I am going to bed i play Valkyrie Crusade on the charger and have never seen any flicker or dimming in video brightness.
I just this weekend played NFS: Most Wanted for more than three hours straight with at least 2 hours on the charger and all at full brightness and never saw this. I am sure because I usually use auto brightness but don't like it shifting brightness whilst playing a game and changed it back as soon as I was done. The thermostat in my flat is usually set at 23.
Also like I said, its not like I have never seen the message, just in vastly more strenuous situations than you are describing which again makes me think you have a hardware fault making this problem occur more frequently.
Let's see if someone else can replicate your problem in similar circumstances to see if it is a more widespread issue.

I am sure because I usually use auto brightness but don't like it shifting brightness whilst playing a game and changed it back as soon as I was done. The thermostat in my flat is usually set at 23.
Also like I said, its not like I have never seen the message, just in vastly more strenuous situations than you are describing which again makes me think you have a hardware fault making this problem occur more frequently.
Let's see if someone else can replicate your problem in similar circumstances to see if it is a more widespread issue.

I was using a LG optimus G pro before this one, in my opinion the bright is poor in this phone vs for example S4 or LG. So , will be very interesting get a solution meaby by kernel or similar to get more bright. I offert another 10$ if anyone can developed any thing in this direction.. thanks in advance

Now of course I understand people say "oh it will damage your phone" but you know what, so will overclocking your processor and graphics etc.
My problem is that whilst not even doing intensive tasks, my screens maximum brightness lowers, apparently due to temperature throttles. It is really frustrating because sometimes the phone does not even feel hot, and I'm not even using the phone intensively.
Even if there is no interest in this, I'd happily pay someone to increase the temperature throttle for brightness reduction.

Buy the n900 (exynos).. it doesen't have that issue
I've read many threads about this issue and I guess that it persists only on SM-N9005 Snapdragon devices. I live in Greece and in summer when temperatures are really high, the thermal throttling issue becomes really annoying especially when gaming, because thermal throttling affects screen brightness, CPU clocks and GPU clocks too! For those who don't believe this, here's a screenshot of my N9005 when overheated.

I'm in the US, with a rooted N3, 900t. stock kernal and ROM, and have also experienced the brightness flicker/throttle.
I've noticed it under varying circumstances, but yes, most frequently when plugged in and surfing web.
I have Xposed framework installed, with a CPU temp display module. Based on what I've noiticed, the dim happens around 146-150 degrees farenheit. Most games, however, will not allow the dim to occur.
There is also another Xposed module I have been using with mixed results called DVS disabler. It will randomly keep the screen from dimming at temps as high as 167 degrees farenheit! (at that temp, i can feel the heat coming off the screen at almost an inch away)
Side-thought::: I have a 'tempered glass' screen protector on that may/may not be affecting the whole temperature thing. not certain.
I get this issue too... Sometimes not even doing anything that intensive... Hopefully it's a simple kernel tweak.
