S3 get hot? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

My s3 gets hot so fast. I'll be looking at tweets or browsing pulse and BAM. I don't even want to hold it, its so hot. Yes I am on a custom ROM, cm10 to be specific but this happens to me on stock as well. My governor setting are default for the rom, no custom kernels installed. What do you guya recommend? Should I return it and will vzw accept it?

How hot is it getting? Actual temps I mean.
Install system tuner and that will give you cpu temps. I can't think off hand of any apps except wifi tether for root users that will give you a battery temp.
Before I got a case I thought my phone was getting way too hot, turns out it was no where near dangerous levels but it was hotter than other phones I've had. It's just a thing with the S3.

I'm not sure what could be wrong but just want to throw in that my phone does not get hot at all, it doesn't even get a little warm, and I use my phone quite a bit, pulse is one of my favorites, I play a couple games etc. I am stock but was running CM10 and my phone never got hot.
Sorry I couldn't help just wanted to let you know that simply using your phone shouldn't make it hot, not sure why yours is like that.

What temperatures are in the "redzone" as far as the phone's safety. I'm Overclocked and will sometimes get up to about 120F, but have seen it get as high as 130 before.
To the OP, can you give us any numbers? I use System Tuner to find out mine.

The 4g is one of the biggest culprits for heat. My phone heats right up if I'm tethering or downloading directly. And I imagine there's a lots of back and forth data with Twitter along with the other browsing he mentioned.

Those temps are fine. If I have my phone plugged in and tethering I've seen low 150s. I usually try to cool it down at that point but just so it won't go higher. I've been told that 160f shouldn't hurt it.

Awesome! Thanks! My old laptop would often get up to almost 200, in fact it would idle around 180, but I was pretty sure the phones would withstand far less due to the fact that it is in a much smaller package and that there is no heatsink, I just wasn't sure how high it can go.

A CPU is a CPU pretty much. The heatsink just helps keep the temp down. Equivalent of taking the back of our phone and putting a fan on it almost.

Critical temp is around 180. Our phones will automatically shut down

Lol kindve dangerous if your not careful but I put my phone in a airtight zip lock back and ran cold water on the outside, cooled down pretty quickly. Dont let water touch the zip part of course, but maybe another option.

Thanks for the tip! i've been having the same concerns. I'll be downloading the system tuner software to keep an eye on the heat.

Noticed change to phones ability to take a charge
I had my phone get quite hot the other day after I switched to cleanrom 6.5 and now the phone doesn't want to take a charge like it did before. Could that be some indication of some damage done?
I didn't have the frame of mind to check the temp at the time. It was noticeable hot though. Even through the case.

I would advise against that. at the very least use room temp water, not cold. sudden temp changes are never good. could induce cracking in the glass or other components

Warning to overclockers!

Not all phones can be overclocked safely. Not all CPUs can handle overclocking. If you've ever overclocked a computer CPU, you'd know that no two CPUs are exactly the same.
Well, my Captivate heats up a lot, quickly. It heats up so much that the screen literally CRACKED. After using Screencast w/ Droid VNC, I've managed to backup with Titanium Backup and I'm ODIN flashing back to stock.
I'm trying to get it fixed by Samsung...
We'll see if I can say it's because of the phone overheating that I can get it covered (I didn't drop it for it to crack like that).
I know I'm warning overclockers, but the funny thing is, I didn't use an overclocked kernel (Cognition 3.04). This happened with stock speed!

First off wrong forum... Second off their is no way the phone could get hot enough to crack this glass unless it had defective regulation or the glass was damaged.
Gorilla glass is tempered in a special way, it is tougher then pyrex, thermal shock would not crack this glass.

"No way"?
It's not the gorilla glass. The glass is in fine condition. It's the digitizer/amoled screen under the glass. The heat comes from the CPU.

If my phone was this bad without overclocking, other people may have not-as-bad phones where overclocking pushes it past its limit.

thats 45C so about the same as mine.
I don't remember what cognition version I was on when it happened, but I was tethering and fell asleep. Woke up when I rolled over onto my phone which was extremely hot. I know my heat safety control is working, shuts down normally about 115 F. But for some reason this time it didn't. I quickly opened it up, popped the battery out and started blowing in it. I couldn't even touch the battery at first it was so hot. So I can testify that sometimes craziness happens and can jack up your phone.
This is a fairly common problem with blackberrys I have heard stories about the phones getting insanely got and just frying the whole phone. My personal bet is on a problem with the cpu temperature regulation or something funny going on with the battery.

Besides the unusual problem mentioned above, what other issues overclocking could cause to my captivate? Force closes? Freezes? Charge Deaths? Anything else? Anything REAL bad?

Not really a need to oc right now, not worth the risk for me. Just bragging rights imo.

Tethering was the culprit here. It seems Samsung's (and many mfr.) engineers didn't anticipate anyone would want to run the 3G and WiFi radios simultaneously as wireless tethering wasn't included in Android at the time. It produces tons of heat and uses battery by the gallon. The old open-source wireless tethering app needed for 2.1 had a battery temp indicator for this reason.
Overclocking is considerably less risky. If anything it will simply cut power to the unit at a threshold temperature before damage is incurred. The real risk of soft-bricking while overclocking comes from if an overaggressive clock setting is permanently saved before a crash, which is easily avoided with reasonable care.
Using an overclocking kernel (Suckerpunch ftw!) that also allows for undervolting helps diminish excess heat somewhat. I've run Stability Test and Neocore stress-tests for an hour each at 1.4GHz undervolted, reaching 45 degrees C with no issues. My typical use patterns seldom put that much load on the phone though, so I'm not worried.

Wow that's serious; mine never really gets that hot though, even when I'm charging and using a lot of applications at the same time. It gets to around 44C max; ruccintg 1.2ghz.
But yea I think something might have been wrong with the phone; of course undervolting helps as well and Im' sure that's attributing to my phone staying cool 80 percent of the time.
I think it's more to so with the radios. My phone isn't very overclockable and it freezes long before the chip puts off heat. My phone gets hot running navigation and charging at the same time. it also has gotten hot with roms that suffer from battery drain. I doubt that the battery drain is ever cpu related.

Is it dangerous heating the phone to up to 41C every day?

So I started playing this game Order and Chaos Online (kinda MMO similar to WoW) and the temps get very high, up to 41C on WiFi and 43C on 3g. The phone is burning to a point that it hurts my hand. I'm playing aprox 2-3 hours per day, sometimes maybe 4 hours, how dagerous is that to the phone? Can it do any significat damage over time?
I am using the jame bond kernel at 1ghz, which is also a bit undervolted, don't know the values tho, governer is set to ondemand. I tried to underclock it to 800mhz but the game lags sometimes and is a no-go.
ukhm, khm....
Well if the phone is heating up and it sounds pretty bad, I'm pretty sure its dangerous. Maybe not, but IMO it is. My Sprint HTC Hero has over heated a few times and after that it had small little dots on the screen. Hopefully your phone don't fry.

Mines usually sits between 34°C - 36°C, its seems like a normal temp IMO. I've never had my phone hit 41°C before and I sometimes i tether my phone via usb and it still dosent hit that high. If your is hitting that high, it could also be the temp around your home or something. But I wouldn't use your phone to play MMO, especially if your playing 2-4hrs everyday. Just saying..

Well I'm at stock right now because I'm waiting for the ota tomorrow. But I was using koushdecks 1.2.1 with matr1x kernel 4.0 bfs version. Clocked it up to 1.3ghz - 100hz, switched between smatass to ondemand everyone ounce in awhile and I still was at 36°C. I use setcpu's widget to always check my temp and it never goes higher then 36°C. Fact.

Can anyone else pls tell their usual temps, this got me a bit worried. On browsing the net I achieve 38C, on some intensive games I can get over 40C. When idle it usually stays at 30C, sometimes in the morning I find it with 28C. Is this normal?

What kind of heat can the g2x take?

I'm trying to set up a profile for setcpu. What would be a good limit for heat on the g2x before it overheats?
I say anything above 110°-115° I live in phoenix az that's under stating for most places though lol

Honestly 110 is kind of low. When I had a g2x (during winter) I never saw over 108, but my other phone has been as high as 127 while playing a CPU intense game plugged in in the middle of summer. Shoot, I know all that's measured on a phone is battery temp, but on a laptop 140 processor temp is perfectly acceptable.

Tegra does not thermal throttle itself until about 70°C IIRC
now, letting it get that high on a regular basis is not the best thing for the cpu or the battery.
If your gonna set a profile, I'd recommend 60°C
my phone used to hit that every day when i was doing some hardcore multitasking.

Even being counter active and setting your temp limit a little lower and then setting the profile Max CPU frequency a little higher may be a good idea you get a audible warning when you hit your temp limit (in setcpu) so might as well take advantage

That's cpu temp, allot of that dissipates by the time it gets to the battery. Yeah, running hot causes the life of electronics to shorten, but I'm not keeping this phone for more than 2 years at most, and batteries are cheap
Like i said, tegra is alright till 70, i get nervous around 60-65 your battery temps should not be any higher than about 50-60 (but that's just a guess)
I'd your setting up an emergency overheating profile I'd still recommend 60° but if you're hitting that too much you might want to tone down the oc in general
Don't worry about the solder tho, that won't melt till around 100° or higher
Note: all temps in °C

During use, phone heats up to 41c/104f regularly.. this cant be normal?

Just web browsing over 3g for 20-30 min will heat the phone up pretty warm to the.touch. it also drains about 1% per 1 min of 3g browsing not even streaming. I'm still on 1.73 att. No apps in background and there is no idle battery drain. Is this normal? I'm guessing not brightness is set way under half
This happened to me only when I'm on like YouTube for a while but mine reaches like 110° F :-(

mine gets hot as well just by browsing. it is right on the bottom left of where the camera is
If I just check FB or draw something, this phone will start searing my thigh when I put it back in my pocket. This phone is definitely HOT(not in a good way...)
I have had 0 heat issues (can only feel it heat up while charging)
Maybe this is because I had the iPad 3, so nothing seems hot in comparison
mine only heats up when im charging and using it at the same time (playing games usually)
Maybe someone should make a poll because I'm having zero heat issues. Played few games the other day while waiting for my gf's OBGYN doctor to come in and check out our soon to be baby and we was playing for a good half hour. Barely any heat at all. Charging produces hardly any heat if any heat at all (noticeably anyways).
The highest I've seen so far was 41C while using wifi tether. Since I came from Nitro HD, which goes to 63C when voice talk on skype or gtalk, and makes your brain boil, this didn't bother me a bit...
Mine only gets hot when I use google navigation, which is understandable. It gets warm when I play hanging with friends, but in my experience that game spikes the processor the entire time it's open.

No heat issues at all for me, I tried to put as much load on the phone as I could to test this issue and all is well, it got warm to the touch but no more than any other smartphone I've used in the last ~6 years...
41c is not hot. My Atrix used to rocket up to 60-70. That was too hot. Think about it: 104 is barely warm enough for a hot tub. You can run a fever of 104 and be ok. Yeah, it's high for a person, but come on - dual 1.5ghz with a HD screen? They can't make that stuff make cold instead of heat!! Just saying...
It stays well under 50c. In my mind... *perfect*

Just so we're clear, good build quality will often make the exterior of a device hotter. This helps keep the all-important interior cooler. Having my phone feel hot while being measurably at reasonable temperatures is good! You must be careful not to base your opinion of the device's thermal management on subjective senses rather than measured fact.

And I won't argue the subjective notion of heat on your lap during nav! I know 105-110 feels pretty doggone warm (I had to check the temp to make sure it wasn't overheating), but if the exterior is only a couple degrees different than the interior...? That's good stuff right there.
My phone does seem warm to me now that i think about it but it seems to happen when it wants..
yesterday i noticed it would get pretty warm (not ridiculously hot though) when i would be on it for a few minutes (texting, tweeting, the usual).

not sure if i'm just not used to having a phone with this type of casing, (i had an Inspire previously and it didn't seem to get too hot.) i would figure a phone with a plastic or similar material casing would feel warmer compared to something like with a metal back (correct me if i'm wrong )
I don't think that this phone should get hot. It uses a 28nm process while being just a dual core processor. I think that the voltage might be higher than it should be. We need custom kernels and roms for this baby!!!

[Q] Nexus 5 gets hot

Hey guys, Im new to XDA but i have a quick question for all nexus 5 owners. Okay i was just wondering if anyone else's Nexus 5 gets hot. I remember my nexus 4 would get so hot i couldn't touch it. I haven't had that kind of heat from my nexus 5, but it is there and i do notice it. It gets hot near the camera on the back, and it gets hot on the front at the top of the screen. I have a CPU temp monitor running on my device to check if my device is running to warm. I found it averages/hovers around 50 degrees celsius. When i open chrome and do some light browsing it goes up to 60 degrees. So my question is.. Is anyone else noticing their phone gets hot? And does anyone have a cpu temp monitor running and could you let me know how hot your phone is running at?
Thanks
Mine gets hot after a fair amount of time of gaming. Nothing terribly uncomfortable, but noticeable nonetheless.

Yeah mine is warm after just 5 minutes of normal usage non-gaming situations. Not hot but warm. Its starts to get hot to the touch after 15 minutes of heavy usage (ie. Browsing, gaming, etc) . I don't know if this is worth calling Google about and having them replace it, or is everyone's phone like this and I just need to get used to it?
I gotta stop reading on this forum the more more I read about this phone its make me not want it does all the things my Galaxy Nexus does. too not while browsing the internet. Low speaker volume. No flash. Questionable battery life. Might go iPhone...smh
Chrome is the problem. Its resource heavy for no ****ing reason.
I've been using chrome and my phone doesn't work hard at all with the same amount of browsing and tabs I always have open.
So its not the phone. You can expect it to get warm when doing CPU intensive stuff. Gaming would be it. But not hot.

Ew no
guess what. youre using a 2,3ghz quad core device, ots gonna get hot when you use it. and itll cool down quick when you arent using it. thats how its supposed to be, thats how it works.
Okay i think it might be chrome as well. When playing temple run, my device only got to 58 celsius. But when browsing on chrome my device went up to 68 celsius. So now I'm thinking its just chrome?

As the other person stated - Chrome is a resource hog and definitely is part of it. Fully utilizing Google Now with the voice search activated (*okay Google*) can definitely do it. Try Chrome Beta, it's much better.
Does it get too hot to the point it won't charge? That what pisses me off most about my g-nex

i think its normal for the 'warm' touch at the back, it doesn't get quite as hot as the nexus4 becuase of the glass backing
i use tempMonitor app, i get around 47c cpu temp when its warm
im running r12 franco kernel UVing to 920mV at 1.95max ghz
Im using TempMonitor as well. When under normal circumstances (i.e. texting, calling, etc) my phone is running at 45 celsius. But it gets hot as soon as i go online or play a game for like 3-5 minutes. Im sure it must be chrome then. I understand the gaming part and how the processor works, but i didn't realize chrome was that bad. Ill try chrome beta. Anyone else know what temperature there cpu'c are running at?

my cpu is anywhere between 0C and 89C, depending what im doing with the phone. its normal to get hot, especially when doing something taxing. itll get hot, but itll cool down fast when the work is done. thats how its supposed to work. anyone complaining that device cpu temp is hot at 65C just doesnt know any better.

Lol well thats why I was asking and looking through the forums on XDA because I've never experienced a hot phone before. Im coming from the moto x which never got above 40C. That phone wasn't a snapdragon 800 though. I just wanted opinions of if it was just my phone or if everyones phone was like this. And if not should i send it in for replacement.

.
I know that this is BS because my note 3 which has the exact same processor never goes above 38-39 degrees Celsius even if I'm gaming for over an hour. If you think 89C is normal you're crazy.

So some people say its normal and some don't? Sigh. I hope everyone is talking about CPU temp, not battery temp.

what i see in this statement is pure ignorance. human body temperature is 37C, youre telling me that your cpu NEVER goes more than 1-2C over human body temp, even while gaming? do you live in the antarctic?
your only saving grace will be if you meant battery temperature, not cpu temperature. 39-40C would be normal then.
It's very easy to get wrong temperature readings from sensors btw. Trying to find a good app that reads them properly is not.
Parts of the phone warm up quickly but luckily the bottom bezel area does not.
