[Q] No Images when on WiFi? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am running stock Kit Kat except that i have my phone unlocked and rooted.
What is happening is that when i am connected to wifi i am unable to load images on the play store, or any browser. Games work, video works music works, but images wont load.
I have no problem on my nexus 7 connected to wifi or any other device i have ever had. If i disconnect from wifi and use cellular it all loads just fine. Can anyone lend a hand on this for me?
Thanks
update: turns out that you tube thinks i have no network when on wifi, but other apps seem to work and think they have a network just fine.
Update: must be something to do with the router, when i connect it to a wifi hotspot it works fine. ???? thanks anyway.

Doesn't seem to be an issue with the radio on the phone, especially if you can connect to other hotspots without issues. Factory reset the router, that should fix the problem.

Try checking to see if you have any adblocking on your phone and disable it and try loading pictures up.

Thanks I'll give them both a try.

OK so no add blocking and that couldn't be the case as you tube and hangouts and google+ all behave as if I have no network. I will try the router reset and cross my fingers. I just updated the firmware on my netgear r6300.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

Ok after testing resetting the router gave back a small bit more but non of the Google services act right such as no images in YouTube but I am at least not getting a no network error. This same issue now exists with my nexus 7 2013 after installing kit Kat. Now I am pretty sure its not my hardware, instead its the modem that's installed with kit Kat on both devices.

[Q] Wifi signal?
Does anyone get a weak wifi signal with their Nexus S? Whenever I connect to my at home wifi I never get full bars and something I'll just randomly lose signal. Also it seems to go pretty slow. I used to have the Mytouch4G and it work flawlessly with the wifi. Anyone else having this problem?

OMG yesss I do.
Just about a room away I loose signal, almost completely. = 0
IDK, but I see more flaws every day that passes
Mine's been working fine over Wi-Fi. I'm pretty glad it does too, because my only data option with it is Wi-Fi..

Wifi has been working great for me. It reconnects automatically and doesn't drop. The signal seems on par with my nexus one.
Speed wise, is it on par with the 3G network?
[Q] Wifi does not work anymore after rooting :(
So, I unlocked my Android 2.3.1 and rooted it ... But if I click on wifi so I could connect to my modem it says Error and wont even search or anything. I tried reseting too but still no luck .. What is the problem and how to fix this ??
That's odd, I didn't have any issues with wifi as I connected to Android Market to downloaded ROM Manager during my rooting process earlier. Have you tried flashing a custom ROM on your device to see if it'll fix it?
No I didnt, would that work? .. A friend told me to install a new "kernel" but I dont want to overwhelm my android with custom made kernels .
your problem is you used one of the quick methods of rooting your phone, which used a kernel that wasn't from the exact rom you have.
if your on stock 2.3.1, you will need the stock 2.3.1 boot.img, and then you'll need to root it manually the long way via adb command line. search the nexus s development section for how-to's. they are all there.
i too had this problem, had to install MoDaCo ROM to fix it, but i dont regret rooting, i now have custom rom and over clocked cpu on the nexus s
you have two options, either to flash NANDROID backup to un-root and return to stock or install a custom ROM, i choose MoDaCo bcoz of its UI, it looks and feels just like the stock one.

Yes, that's the point of MoDaCo roms, to make minimal changes to the look and feel of the phone, but to improve performance with his custom optimizations.

[Q] Nexus S Wifi Settings - force close
Hi all,
Just got a new Nexus S - all was well at home. Took it to work today and noticed something very odd. It was fine until entering the wifi settings menu - at which point it dramatically slowed down. I got two 'not responding, close or wait' messages before being able to join the network.... all other settings are fine - just the wifi area.
Weird - wondering what could cause this... too many wifi networks broadcasting (am in middle of London)...?
Anyone seen anything similar?

Too many WiFi around you shouldn't cause that.
Try rebooting and setting again if you haven't already.
Hmmm - rebooted and still have the same issue. At home, or even a block away from the office it all works fine. But in the office itself, although it connects and uses the wifi fine, the settings page is VERY slow to load and gives me the wait/force close message.
Out of interest - I also have 'wifi analyser' from the marketplace. This too is very slow and unresponsive when in the office.
So - it is definately something to do with the wifi here.... but have not got a clue what. Before I join the wifi, or when I am physically somewhere else it all works fine.
Wifi is WPA-TKIP, the key is a very long jumble of letters but surely that is not an issue.
Strange eh!!!

[Q] Possible WiFi problem?
Hi there, just bought a Nexus S, also used to have Nexus One.
The thing is for some wireless networks even though I enter the password correctly, it says connected and still there is no connection at all. (I mean browser tries to connect but at the end it says page could not be found) I even tried with an ad-hoc network that I created with my laptop but still the problem exists.
At home I'm able to my network without a problem. The type of network I'm trying to connect is: WPA2 Personal with AES. Is there any known issue about AES at Android system? Afaik there is no way to change the encryption used right?
this might actually not be a nexus S issue.
some modems/switches/routers are configured to block certain devices/applications/package's
we have a modem and router with both wifi.
but my psp/nDS cant connect to the modem, but can connect with the router

i have a similar problem. My Nexus S connects to my router only within a few hours after a router reset. Then it stucks at "obtaining ip" and never connected before I do another router reset.
My home wifi is WPA2 type, and for WEP type wifi my NS never got connected.

[Q] WiFi Issue

Background:
A week ago, I flashed the Lollipop Developer Preview onto my Nexus 5. I am also in High School, and my school offers WiFi. When I went to school the morning after I flashed it, I was having some trouble with the WiFi. I usually open up Chrome and go somewhere basic (google.com) because the school WiFi will block everything and automatically redirect you to an authentication page, where you would sign in with your student ID and password. What would happen was I would try to connect to the open, unsecured SSID, my phone would connect to it, but would leave a little exclamation mark next to my WiFi indicator. I did some research on that and found that it was because my phone wasn't detecting an active connection, and was switching me back to Mobile Network thanks to the new Lollipop feature. Which means that when I would try to get redirected to the Authentication Page, it would use Mobile Network and successfully bring up whatever URL I threw in there. I searched some more on Google, XDA, and various other Android forums, to no avail.
So, I figured it wasn't the worst thing in the world, and decided to go some time without WiFi while sticking to my Mobile Network. After a couple of days, the WiFi issue seemingly resolved itself. I'm not sure if it was because of something I did, or whatever else. I used the same SSID, same URL for redirection, same browser, same everything. I didn't care, it was fixed. And I thought that was the end of it.
Fast forward to now:
Last night, I flashed the official stock image, straight from Google. I thought the issue I had the week prior was a bug that would've been fixed. To my surprise, I get to school, and sure enough, the same issue as a week before. I am, obviously, going to wait and see if it fixes itself again, but the issue sparked curiosity, and now I have to ask...
What would cause this?
What are some possible resolutions to this?
Is this something Google didn't think of when designing 5.0?
If anybody has/had the same issue, I would love to hear about it. Any help or tips/resolutions are appreciated.
Thanks,
206003
Update:
I'm not sure what happened, exactly, but upon coming to school this morning, I noticed that my WiFi works and the issue is gone. Though I'm glad, I'm still not sure why this happened. Any answers?

I read here on the Nexus 5 site) that Lollypop has a problem when on channel 12 and higher on wifi. Might be your problem.
That's what I thought too. So I downloaded a WiFi analyzer and tried to connect directly to a channel 1 connection. It didn't work. I tried a channel 6 connection, which still didn't work. Any other ideas?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA mobile app
I don't think you can do it that way. I think you will have to actually go into the school router and make the changes on the router. You will need password and permissions and I doubt that school will give it to you.
The WiFi analyzer I used showed me the available channels for the SSID, along with the channel number I was connected to. None of the channels worked.

Same problem. Whenever I try to reconnect to any WiFi, it shows an exclamation mark. To make it work, I have to either switch airplane mode on then off, or forget network and setup again.
This happened ever since upgrading to Android Lollipop without wiping data. I am rooted if that matters.
Any updates? Changing channels is far from a feasible solution.
I found a better temporary fix. Once connected to WiFi, you disable data until the exclamation mark is gone, and then re-enable it.
I'm still not too sure what the fix is. Like I said, time solved my issue. I am still curious as to what it is though, so any input is appreciated.

After a while, the problem reappears so I keep mobile data disabled while on WiFi. You can automate that with Smart WiFi Toggler. Problem pretty much solved.
Yup. Problem reappeared. When I try to disable mobile data and connect again, nothing happens. I still have the exclamation mark.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA mobile app
Here's how I do it:
Connect to WiFi > Disable Mobile Data > Surf the Internet > Exclamation mark disappears.
Android 5.0.1 seems to have fixed the issue for me.
Greetings.
I had the same wifi! problem with everyone and when i looked at my router's settings i noticed that there was no dns selected in the router. not from isp, not manually, nothing. So i just checked dns from isp and voila.
hope that helps someone.

WiFi connectivity issues after Lollipop factory flash

Hi there.
I tried searching the forum first before posting but couldn't find anything else that was the same issue.
I flashed the Lollipop factory image (LRX210) onto my Nexus 5. Everything works fine expect when connecting to my home wifi.
The phone acts like my home wifi is a public connecting and is always asking me to "sign into network". But if I ignore this message, disable my data (because Lollipop now defaults to using mobile data when wifi connection can't be established) the wifi seems to work fine and I can load webpages, use apps etc.
My wifi router is an Apple Airport Extreme 6th Gen and I've tried changing the channels for both 2.4ghz and 5ghz
From searching around I've seen various posts about wifi problems with the Nexus 5 after Lollipop flash/upgrade, but noting I've read seems to be the same issue as me.
Anyone else experiencing this issue, any ideas on how to fix? Or should I wait for Google to release an update to fix other wifi bugs and pray this fixes mine too?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I managed to find a fix for me which worked!
I flashed the radio img file from the ktu84q build and voilĂ , no WiFi problems at hone.
Sounds like an issue with the lollipop radios so hope that gets fixed at sine stage

Nexus 5 wifi only connects when screen is on

Hi guys!
I have this problem for some time now (at least since the marshmallow update).
If I move my Nexus 5 to a different place, far from the current Wi-Fi AP, it does not connect to the nearest saved AP, it only does that if I wake up the screen.
The Wi-Fi works properly when the screen is off, I still get the notifications and all, I just have to stay connected to the same AP.
I have tried everything to find what is the problem, but I can't find it.
I did a factory reset, it was working again, but when I did the first time Google account login, it started again, even on safe mode.
I thought I corrected it by doing another reset and not recovering my account , but when installing some apps it started again.
Every time I think I found the app that causes the problem and uninstall it, the Wi-Fi problem eventually returns
and I don't know what to do more.
What I have found out is that even uninstalling the app I think is the culprit, the Wi-Fi only works again properly if I reboot the phone, so maybe I have not found the app, and the Wi-Fi only works properly because I rebooted the phone?
The apps I have on my phone are the same I have in my Nexus 7 (2013), and with all those apps, the Wi-Fi works properly on the Nexus 7.
Is there anyway to know if is the phones fault, or some app (that makes the Wi-Fi not work properly on the Nexus 5,but not in the Nexus 7)?
Can I see it using a log cat or other way , or should I just send it to warranty?
Thank you for your help!
I have the same problem. Is a f*cking bug (I've tried with android 5.1.1, 6 and 6.0.1 with the same result).
My thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/wifi-disconnect-screen-off-t3271913

Thanks matandomuertos , its good to know that its not only me.

Anyone else have wifi issues with GS7?

I can connect to the wifi in my office at work. I can browse the internet with chrome and I can even perform a speed test with the speedtest app. However, I cannot download or update apps from the play store. I can do these things via network data. A co-worker has no problem with her GS6 on the same network. Anyone else having this problem?
Nope. And works fine on other WiFi networks?

Most likely being blocked by firewall or the like but that doesn't explain why your colleague can use fine
Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
Haven't tried any other network yet, but I will this evening. Also need to mention another co-worker got a GS7 yesterday and is experiencing the same problem as me. He didn't mention another network and I realize that will be an important piece of information.
Would a firewall allow me to browse and speedtest?
Mine has the exact same issue. It simply won't use wifi for apps other than Chrome. I tried doing some recovery mode steps I found on another site, but to no avail. I have tried it on my network at work and then my home network and still the same. I am going by the Verizon store tomorrow to hopefully get it resolved, unless someone in this arena knows what to do.
Same here. Got my S7 yesterday and 1. Play store will not download apps on wifi but I can browse surprisingly. 2. It seems my wifi signal is weak. I have tried using both my 5 and my 2.4 off my router. Same issue. Taking it tonwork today to see how it does.
Update, but no solution. I am able to do everything on my home wifi network. However, my office network WILL allow me to browse with chrome, do a speedtest, DOWNLOAD apps from Amazon. It will NOT let me download or update apps from the play store and it will not let me stream from Pandora.
Does this make sense to anyone?
My wifi issue is a bit different. It seems to randomly connect/disconnect me at work, but my home network is fine. Never had an issue before this phone.
I had a similar issue and a reboot of my router fixed it..The issue was most notable when downloading from the market
Maybe we don't go to work. Problem solved. lol
Had the same problem as you guys, found this on another site posted in 2014 by djsusant - worked for me
1. SWITCH OFF YOUR MOBILE DATA.
2. SWITCH ON YOUR WI-FI.
3. SWITCH ON FLIGHT MODE.
4. RESTART YOUR PHONE. (KEEP ACTIVATED FLIGHT MODE & WI-FI)
5. AFTER RESTART DON'T SWITCH OFF FLIGHT MODE.
6. OPEN GOOGLE PLAY. WAIT FOR OPEN.
SEE IT WILL OPEN GOOGLE APPS
7. NOW YOU CAN SWITCH OFF FLIGHT MODE.
Hope that helps

Thanks , I tried that when I got to work. It didn't help. I found out that I can download and stream from amazon music but I cant download or stream from the play store or pandora. I wish I knew more about networking, I'd check the settings on our routers.
Having similar problem on home wifi. I have reset home router. I can download and update if I turn off wifi. With wifi on I can browse with chrome. Have to keep turning wifi on and off to do things.
have the same issue except it will work at the store I purchased at but not at home. Tried every remedy but factory reboot so far. There is a great signal to the phone at home but won't download any apps. Facebook etc seem to come in but I didn't purchase this phone for FB. Any help will be appreciated as Samsung reps have been no help.
Pandora isn't working on mine either, not sure if it's a wifi issue only as service is very poor here (much worse than the old G3, tradeoff for battery I spose) so cannot isolate the cause. Will do later. The steps above didnt fix it.
No Pandora and not being able to read the SD card from cpu will probably be deal breakers for me if they aren't fixed within the 30 day trial. Shame, because there's a lot to like with it.
I can say just one thing - at least on the 802.11n networks the signal reception is much lower than e.g. on Sony Xperia Z3 compact .... that is little disappointing .... I was kinda hoping that brand new super ultra class phone with a/b/g/n/ac modem will have also super ultra good signal reception ...
I have the edge and I'm experiencing similar issues. I've also noticed that backups and even ones through Google photos will not work on wifi.
My previous response seems to be only temporary. Ive been doing the DNSet app and it works. So it looks like something on googles end, hopefully they fix it soon
I bought a GS7 edge and have faced the same issues. Unable to download/update any apps via wifi at home. Using a netgear AC router. All my other devices work fine. I've tried restarting the router. Didn't help. Tried both 2.4 and 5G connections as well. What's weirder is the phone works flawlessly on other wifi networks (school and the best buy store I bought it from when I went back to talk to them about it, it even worked off a tethering connection off the rep's phone)
Try switching wifi secirity from AES to TKIP. It helped me with S6 wifi issues

UPDATE (3/15/16)
So we were able to fix the issue as of last night by changing the advanced settings of the network we were connected to on the phone to static IP. This fixed the google play app issues but oculus apps still wouldn't download. We then turned off enhanced 4G LTE and that seemed to remedy it. Phone as of now works fine, hoping this doesn't cause anything else but will be talking to store reps about this soon.
