Gmail Push Notifications not working - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

None if my GMail accounts are reviewing push notifications. At best sometimes I get it after a 15-20 minute delay, but mist times it doesn't come through until I manually refresh.
Anyone else having similar issues? I've checked my data connection and WIFI is set to always on but still no luck

Hi
I had the same issue. Just remove the account under settings and set it back, this should fix it.
When on wifi double check if port 5228 TCP is open cause gmail uses that port for push.

Try clearing the cache and data from the applications>All>Gmail settings screen. Then open up gmail again and it'll re-sync. That should work.

Thanks I tried it and it seems to work but when Im on my tablet It seems to only get pushed just to the tablet not the phone as well. Is that normal?
Do you have the "Mobile data always-on" checked?

Lol yea. Unless it goes into power saving mode
Go into settings > Accounts and Sync > select the account that is not syncing > Then make sure that the Sync Gmail checkbox is checked.
It is it does sync but it doesn't sync as in pushed notifications I can have an email and I won't know unless its refreshed
Bump.
Having the same problem. Gmail push isn't working reliably. Sometimes it works, but mostly not. I've verified all settings for syncing. If I go into a Gmail account and select Refresh it downloads the new emails, but auto notification is just flaky as heck, and mostly not working.
I'm running pure stock, not rooted. Anyone else seeing this, or have suggestions for fixing?
Thanks.

This is what messed up my sync a while back:
Settings > Power > Enable power efficiency
If it's on it will turn off auto sync based on what when idle. That fixed my gmail issues, dunno if it's the same for you.

I did have that setting turned on, so will leave it off and see if that's the issue.
Thanks.
Try reinstalling gmail through the market.

Need help for a friend - Touchpad e-mail issue

Hi,
I have a friend that has the touchpad and she set up a few e-mails on it. When she switches between wireless networks (like home to work, etc) e-mail will no longer sync unless she completely reboots the tablet. We've tried throwing away the e-mail app (whatever that is where you slide the app up to close it) and we tried putting it into airplane mode and back and nothing seems to work. Any ideas? Fixes?

Do you mean the stock email app? (not that I have used any other!)
I have several accounts set up in mine and they work flawlessly so far.
You mention restarting the tablet, did you try just a Luna restart?
Is there a difference between the networks? Is one open and the other WPA2 or something?
I have seen something similar when going from one network to another, where the wifi has to be switched off and on to flush the settings for the network.

Android "email" app - connection problems to Gmail

This problem seems to have been around for 2 years now, but I haven't found any resolution online.
Using the "email" app on my Motorola Photon (the one with a @ inside an envelope)...I constantly get a "connection error". This is configured for gmail.
Sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn't. It seems to be a problem regardless of whether I'm on wifi or 3G. I have Sprint, if that matters.
I don't know what's going on. The email app is configured to use iMap push.
Should I set it for pop email server instead, and just tell it to poll the server every hour?
Thanks.

I''ve had a similar issue with my boyfriend's phone. All I did was uninstall all the updates for the app, reset the phone, and then redownload the updates for the app. Seems to keep it working at least for a while.

[Q] Forgets wifi password - any tips?

Hi all. At home I turn off my wifi when I go to work (to save the 1p of electricity it probably costs. Way to go, Al Gore!) and when I turn it back on, my nexus 5 doesn't remember the password. My nexus S was the same.
This recommends switching my router to WEP (it's currently WPA-PSK), however I'm not sure I actually CAN change this in my router settings. Shouldn't it just work anyway, or is it a router problem? Should I just stop turning off the router? This feels like it shouldn't be a problem... hmmm.....
[for searchability: remember remembering forgetting forgets wifi wi-fi wireless password pw login]
Phone loses wifi password
Both my Nexus 4 running stock KitKat and previous Galaxy S1 with CyanogenMod 10.2 used to occasionally 'lose' their wifi passwords if disconnected and would ask for saved passwords to be re-entered before they would log in again. This would happen with WPA2 networks - I'm not sure whether it also applies to WEP.
Rebooting the phone usually solves the problem - I put it down to a bug in the software.
Does anyone have a better solution?
WEP is not a solution! Assuming that it would reconnect fine if its not rebooted, just dont reboot the router. Turning it off is not normal or expected behaviour

My galaxy nexus forgets WPA passwords when I turn off the Wi-Fi it doesn't seem to matter if the router has rebooted or not.

Hmm - this is the first I've ever heard of this issue. I agree with rootSU though - WEP is not the solution. It is very insecure. (BTW, if your router supports it, go to WPA2 instead of WPA)
Can you try this a friend's house with their WiFi router to see if it is a problem with the router? You said that your phone doesn't remember the password - does it popup a dialog box asking for the password? Or does it just not connect automatically?
Are you on the stock ROM? or custom?
While I don't shut off my router, I do reboot it once a couple of weeks or so, and my phone(s) signs on automatically.
I don't think it is a router problem, since I had the same issue to with other routers in the past and I didn't have any problem with mine, until one day I tried to connect to another Wi-Fi to test something, and I had to disconnect from mine as it was in range. since that day my phone can not save the network it is like it is a new ssid every time.. I have tried wep and wpa2 with no luck.

was this ever resolved? I'm having the same problem.
same here
I have the same problem. Stock, nonroot T-Mobile nexus 5. Any solution?
Wait what? Why would you turn off your router? Do you unplug your clocks and microwave/fridge? Makes no sense.

Dave what router do you have and which ISP are you with? I wonder if there might be a commonality we can use to debug this.

Happened at 2 locations. 1 was Comcast the other FiOS. Never had the issue with my gs3. It shows the network and I have to re input the password
WEP can be hacked with a phone, it's that insecure. Don't use it, try using WPA2 .

I had this issue before, the problem was that there are duplicate entries of the same network in /data/misc/wifi/*wpa_supplicant.conf
I tried and delete only the duplicate entries but I still had issue, I didn't try much with that and just deleted all entries and entered my WiFi passwords all over again and that did it for me.
I had this issue about 2 years ago, on many different phones and the issue even transfers to new phones when the Google account syncs the WiFi passwords.
I hope this is it and it fixes your issue.

What is the best way to delete those files? Root file manager on the phone? Or go in through a USB connection on my PC?

I did it with root and root file explorer, i did not delete the file, i opened it and deleted the entries there for the wifi passwords saved, they will be easy to identify.
---------- Post added at 02:05 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:57 PM ----------
They look like this
network={
ssid="INFINITUMBA15"
psk="2939253472"
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
priority=735
}
I deleted all the ones like that, synced Google account just in case, rebooted just in case and entered WiFi password. After that I tested that the password saved if I turned WiFi off or the modem off and it worked.

Cheers for the intel. You reckon that'd be possible without root? Looking at that folder unrooted in Astro file mananger & it says 'data' is empty... and I can't see the root directory when plugged into a PC.
Thanks!

thanks dude. I should really root anyway, but this genuinely constitutes a bug so I'll file it on the google forums, since google reads them and addresses the problems on there.

Nice one. I'll link to this on my ticket then, save them looking at the same thing twice, and add some weight to yours.
Other people with this problem, please 91 this on moisesgl's ticket for visibility.

Sync Issues?

Anyone else having problems with the G3 syncing up to things? Mine will start syncing, but it won't finish.
While its syncing, I won't be able to do anything with data at all until I toggle airplane mode on and off. As soon as I turn off airplane mode, I get all my notifications. I have seen this happening the most with Gmail sync, google wallet sync (turned this off), twitter (turned this off), and haxsync (deleted this after it took forever and would refuse to finish syncing).
NOTE: This happens to me on both ART and Dalvic runtimes.... Not sure what the issue is here.
EDIT: Happens on wifi, LTE, and HSPA for me.
EDIT2: I am on stock/not rooted.
I've been having issues with my Google account, but I think it's Google and not my G3.

Inside of Gmail app, you have to enable the sync last 30 days in your primary box or which ever box.
You click on the three dots on the upper right hand corner and go to label settings and enable sync for last 30 days.
Hope that helps.
Thanks for that! I just switched it to 15 days. Maybe that will help...
