Is there something I can use instead of the status bar? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to get rid of my status bar to have more space available. Is there something I can use instead? Maybe swipe from a side of the phone and something pops up?

There are some "pie" apps available

I think it only hides it in the home screen

Install Cyanogenmod and use their pie controls

Is there nothing else than pie? I hate the pie implementation of it

Working on my N7.
Thanks dever. pls add some function like "show status bar on screen off, hide status bar on screen unlock..." and add widget to control status bar show/hide. thanks.
would be awesome if it can be hidden for the lockscreen only on jb
Tried this but gives me a reboot after like a minute. Even the pro does. Maybe it conflicts with my settings and all. But great apps. Im using the gesture control, too bad cant use the hide bar thingy...
Good job! Works like a charm on Motorola RAZR xt910 ICS 4.0.4.
Please add 'exit' button when I run app and when bar is hidden there are no way to go to homescreen when I using tablet mode on Lapdock.
+1 to widget control and restore bar when screen off.
Thanks

I'm using the paid version of gesture control, and I love it. One think I'd like: replacing the Launchpad with a "recent tasks" window. Right now my launchpad consists of a single button to the task switcher, but I'm lazy and I'd like to have one action less to get there..
Working on my flytouch 7
This application is pretty similar to HideBar (http://ppareit.github.com/HideBar/), an application that has been in development for over a year. It contains an intuitive user interface to hide/show the systembar.
I find the development of customizing tools like GMD very good. But as a developer you should not use the same name. This only leads to confusion for existing users.

This was not intended and happened just because title is kind of generic. Since there is no perfect solution for ICS yet without modding, it is good that alternatives are appearing so everyone can pick solution that works best for them.

Request: Have the notification pull down be my lockscreen

Is it possible to use the notification bar "pull down" as my lockscreen? I have seen in the forums ways to change the behavior of the dropdown notification bar but I actually want to use it AS my lockscreen. Is there an app or ROM that allows this? Thanks for your help.
I've never heard of this being done. Modification to do this would be extremely involved

You could use Tasker to expand notification bar on screen on. That's as close as you're going to get

This was also my first guess, but this would not be a 'lock'screen, more like a startscreen
But maybe this is what the op want
I think he just means having the quick panel toggles like a giant widget taking up the whole of a screen?

He probably just wants to see his notifications on the lock screen.

Install nils from play google
Hey guys thanks for all the replies. I have tried dashclock and nils but they both seem very limited. Dashclock doesnt allow you to dismiss notifications from the lockscreen. Also I cannot get it to show me each notification. For example, if I get 4 emails, 5 texts, and 3 gchats, itll only show me the latest from each. I see the option to change it but it doesnt really seem to work. Additionally, dashclock doesnt allow for integration of power toggles. Even for dashlight, I have to unlock the phone to turn on the flashlight even when rooted.
As for Nils, it has many of the same limitations. I think even the notification pull down is pretty limited in functionality and customizability. I dont know how many of you have used a jailbroken iphone but the app LockInfo fantastic. Theres no alternative that I can find for Android.
Im pretty new to android so I may be ignorant of some of the functionalities in these apps, but I'd be happy to learn!

Immersive mode in apps

While this question is not directly related to Nexus 5, but since it is one of the few devices running KitKat, I'm posting it here. Its been more than a month since KitKat has launched, but even today the "immersive mode" (which I feel is SO important!) has not been translated to many apps that I use regularly -- Kindle, Pocket, Feedly etc. Its not like these apps haven't updated in the last month or so (they have). Is there any reason why these companies have not considered putting immersive mode as a priority item?
Stability is always the priority. Ask the developers of each app if they plan to support it. We don't know the answer in that, we cannot read minds

There is an Xposed module on these forums somewhere, that enables immersive mode everywhere. It has a few flaws though, as some apps just don't work right with it, or once the navigation bar pops back up, it cuts off the portion of the screen.
However the ones that did work with it, it worker great. It would be nice for someone to make an app or tweak to force selected apps into immersive mode, while allowing the navigation bar to stay where needed.

I still use expanded desktop + PIE controls. I think it works better than immersive mode. I turn it on when gaming.
I used the "Immerse me" xposed module, but it had some issues. Fore example in the AOSP messaging app, when the keyboard popped up, the last message received appeared inbetween the keyboard and where I was typing the message, but only partly. part was behind where I typed teh message. I found that disorientating. Also in tapatalk, which I use a lot - when the keyboard came up, teh top of tapatalk (the tapatalk toolbar) disappeared and I couldn't scroll. Really tricky to use with Pie as I had to keep backing out of the keyboard to do things within tapatalk when typing messages.

Could you elaborate on this? A quick play store search couldn't find expanded desktop, but I found something called pie control.

Hey man thanks for this! This is pretty much what I've been wanting. Now I can use the full resolution of my nexus 5! Great for streaming my PC games. Woohoo!
Would still be nice to have some sort of way to choose what apps go full screen, cuz it would just be easier to already have the nav bar for apps that are better suited for it, then go away on ones you want full screen for, but this is still a lot better than the immersive module for xposed. Thanks again.

Hey no prob, happy to help. It kinda breathes new life into the phone, doesn't it? This mod saved my N5 from being tossed in a drawer. I use it more than my Moto X now, just because of gaming on its 5" screen.

[Q] Navigation button customization on stock

I'm trying to go back to stock. The ROM I'm using now allows 5 customized navigation buttons. This seems to be the only mod I can't do without. Does anyone know how to get 5 nav buttons and your nav bar on a stock or close to stock rom?
My nav bar actions:
second action is long press
pull down notification bar, torch
home, search
back, kill app
recent app list, last app
app drawer, settings

Only thing that may be able to do this would be an Xposed framework and module for Nav Bar customizing. Try Gravitybox or one of them.

You sure about that? They have like 20 different options and you can cram 9 different buttons on the nav bar. I doubt the custom rom you were playing with had more options than that.

UDN does not have a notification bar pull down action. I believe it did not have another action I have listed above but I can't remember and unfortunately I have refunded my purchase. I also don't like that it's an app.

I think you are being too picky. If you are wanting to be on stock ROM, the only way you are going to get those customizations are with Xposed or an app. If neither does the job, you should just stay on the ROM you are using.
I'm not to picky, I live without a lot of options. My rom has tons of options and all I want is its navbar settings in xposed. I think the only customization this phone really needs is a personal smaller navbar.

Brightness and volume slider D850

I noticed on the Att model they removed the brightness and volume sliders from the drip down menu
Is there a way to flash the system file to add it back in? There isn't an option for it in the G3 tweak box.

I came here to ask this same thing...why would they remove a feature that we could toggle on and off?

In G3 Tweaksbox you can enable the status bar brightness slider under Theme > Status Bar > Enable Status Bar sliding (@ bottom of menu)
Note this isn't a slider in the drop down. You touch the status bar without dragging down and slide to change brightness.

I don't have that drag status bar to change brightness functionality on my d850.
I have the icon I can talk that has preset increments but I like to manually slide it sometimes rather than going into the settings.

They might have done this to fix the Chromecast System UI crash
I know it's not as simple, but if you long press on any of the toggles it brings you right to their settings. In the brightness slider case, display settings. Just in case people don't use tweaksbox.

I know, but thats more of a hassle, and I would rather have the slider. Maybe tweaks box will have that feature added to it.
As stated above, only way to get this functionality (somewhat) is to use G3 Tweakbox Xposed module on rooted phone. However this module only gives you ability to change brightness while sliding/dragging your finger on notification bar. Its not what you are looking for but serves the purpose just fine.
However I forgot if this option was enabled in free version of G3 Tweakbox or not. You would have to check yourself since I have already unlocked the premium version so can't go back to verify.

Holy cow....ATT and their typical bull****. First the bloatware now this.
It makes absolutely no sense for them to remove such a useful feature. This reminds me of when ATT removed the mobile data toggle on the S4.
Either way, I hope someone will figure out how to add this feature back.
Did you guys try to tap the edit icon in the list of icons in the status bar? In there you can select the toggles you want in the status bar as well as enable volume and brightness Sliders.

As lennyuk said earlier, it might have something to do with Chromecast not working because of these sliders in the dropdown menu (some say so)
