[Q] p3100 Restore to stock kernel question? - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I am planning to flash omnirom on my p3100 as per http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2512853. Part of the install instructions are installing DhollmenCM kernel.
Currently I am on CM 10.2 nightly. And If i flash DhollmenCM kernel, something goes wrong, How do i go back to previous?
Can CWM nandroid backup get me back to previous?
Will flashing Samsung's original stock rom take me back to previous?
Thanks,
Simon Mandy

if you have stock kernel then flash it i think it would definitely work
also try to wipe cache partition and dalvik cache as you might able to boot properly
good luck:good::good:

No need to remove anything. Just boot into clockworth mod, Back up your current rom.
Then wipe your data, cache and dalvik cache.
Install CM nightly.

Going from cm10 to rooted stock?

Hey guys, I'm thinking about flashing cm10, now that basically everything is working, but I was wondering , if I make a backup of my current stock rooted Rom, then flash cm10, and decide to come back, can I just go into recovery and wipe everything and then click restore and be fine? I ask because I'm not sure if I can do just that considering the whole software version change. Thanks in advance guys!

This should be fine. Just make sure that you installed the latest K-Exec recovery via the dd method. There have been some problems with EX Recovery app. Also some older recoveries had problems with making and restoring back-ups.
Yes
Stay on your stock rooted rom, boot to recovery, and create a nandroid (backup). After you create a nandroid, go ahead and wipe all data/cache/davlik and proceed with the installation of the new rom/gapps
If you dont like the new rom, go back into recovery, wipe everything again then go to restore and restore from the nandroid you mad
Okay thanks guys !

Frustrated! Soft bricked?

I was running LiquidSmooth 2.9. Decided to try the latest KK nightly. Downloaded everything, made a backup, etc. Went to flash and it said (status 7) error. Tried again, same thing. Decided to update to the latest TWRP and try again. Same error. Tried one more time and it worked. After the rom was loaded I immediately noticed that the rom was not stable enough for a daily driver.
Booted into recovery and tried to restore to my previous backup. For whatever ready TWRP could not locate the backup. I tried to move the back up for a while but it wouldn't move to the correct folder. I said screw it I will just download the Liquid Smooth 2.37 which was the latest official release and just reflash. Downloaded everything, then flashed it. Everything set successful, gaps and rom, but now it wont get past the splash screen. I have reflashed like 5 times now all without issue but stuck at splash screen. I can get into recovery fine.
What is my next step to revert back to my previous backup or reflash to a working rom? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem on kk i had to do a factory reset wipe catche dalvik then flash liquid smooth kk pa gapps im working fine. Honestly my own opinion i prefer liquid 2.37 over kk. I read couple post ppl had to get the latest cwm recovery to flash KK roms
Were you able to revert back to 2.37? I'm stuck here in limbo at the moment.

You dirty flashed it over CM11? You didn't wipe system, data, cache and dalvik? I always do that, even when I'm flashing an AOSP-based ROM over another AOSP-based ROM.
The only time I won't do this is if I'm flashing say CM11 over CM11.
If you dirty flashed, that might be your problem, but I don't know for sure as I don't use PacMan ROM.
I didn't dirty flash. Cm11 was on there before. I used philz wipe forfor new rom like I always do.
I can get into the fastboot menu. Is there something I can do there to reflash cm11?

Not sure then. I always use TWRP to wipe and flash. Could be an issue with the ROM itself or you got a bad download. You might want to try and download the ROM again to ensure it wasn't a bad download.
figured it out. must have had something happen to the recovery file.
in fast boot i flashed a new recovery image and was able to boot into recovery.
Maybe you have the JB bootloader and you flashed a KitKat bootloader based CM11 build... That could explain why your phone is not booting properly.
If nothing works you just can flash a STOCK FIRMWARE to begin again.
The phone has stock kitkat. How can I confirm?

That's a no-go. You won't be able to flash a KK-based ROM on a system with a JB Bootloader. The device will abort the installation immediately with a friendly reminder. At least the XT926. Been there, tried that.
^ agree. My atrix HD has a jbbl and I can Confirm this

[Q] Do I have to flash stock kernel before flashing any other rom?

I want to flash Cyanogenmod 11, but I'm currently running DN4 ROM on my Galaxy S3 (Int.) with arter97 kernel. Do I have to return to stock ROM and kernel before switching to Cyanogenmod?

Not sure what DN4 ROM is. If it's KitKat, then just wipe /system, /data, and dalvik cache then fish your ROM's zip file.
If you are on Jelly Bean, then you will need a KitKat compatible recovery like PhilZ CWM Touch or TWRP, and probably an updated modem. zip file to flash first to your S3.
Then format system and data partitions and wipe dalvik cache, then flash CM11.
If on an older Android version like Ice Cream Sandwich, you might need to install a newer KK/JB recovery and radio, format system, data and dalvik, and flash CM10 Jelly Bean first, then follow the steps to flash CM11 KitKat.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

DN4 is basically a port of the Note 4 ROM (which is KK) for the Galaxy S3. I really appreciate your help, but my my problem is the kernel, because now I have arter97's kernel, but I want to flash CM12 with JustArchi kernel in order to have better performance. On the latter kernel's thread I've read that it's strongly not recommended to flash it on another custom kernel (arter97 in this case), so I was thinking to go back to stock and then flash CM12 with JustArchi's kernel. Is this okay to go like this or there's a better way to do it? Thanks again for your help!

Just make a nandroid backup and try it. Make sure you format system and data partitions and wipe dalvik cache before flashing CM12.
You don't need to go stock first; if you have a custom recovery and the bootloader is unlocked, worst case is you restore your nandroid.
I suggest asking about this in the JustArchi thread too.
