[Q] about nandroid back stock and rooted

i have a nandroid stock rom backup i did it when my phone is not yet rooted.
now i successfuly flashed hybridrom v2.1 in my phone.
my question is
1. is it ok to restore the nonrooted stockrom back up in my phone?
2. should i delete phone data ang cache before restoring the backup?
3. what cw recoverry mod i'll use in my SGY? ive found out thre are lots of ver its confusng .
i'm just new with andriod its almost a month that ive got this phone so any help from you guys is much appreciated!

1. IMHO, you should extract necessary settings or data and restore to your new rom. You can use AppExtractor
2. No need to delete everything before restoring
3. Your choice. There is touch version out there. Try and love it

i was saying that if i wana go back to my stock rom (original rom) wich is not rooted can i restore it using CW?
if i flash back to my stock nandroid backup using CW my phone will not be rooted and it will restore the default samsung rom?
its just my theory though i haven't tried it yet i`m asking question like this for my future reference

Well...
Yes your device wont be rooted and will return to the stock rom.
Since the nandroid backup copies the whole partition. just like Norton Ghost does on the pc, so your phone will just go back to its exact status it was at that time.
You wont need to wipe user data/factory reset, because of the data partition being restored by CW.
Well you are asking for a recovery. How did you make a nan backup if you have no recovery?
Or you used the stock one? if you used the stock one, aren't you able to use it to restore?
Or do you want a new more powerful recovery?
As in the previous post they mentioned, use the one you like, with the most options

Nexus S 4G Root issues?

I've been playing around with a Nexus S 4G that I have lying around and never used, and I've ran into a few problems, but you've all been helpful. I rooted all my old EVO 4G's without any problem, but the other day I rooted my NS4G using a one click/simple root and downloaded ClockWorkMod etc. But now for some reason It seems like I've almost lost my root? Is that possible? I still have the little unlocked symbol when booting up.
I've searched this forum and Google and haven't found anything, which could possibly be because I don't know what to look for. I've never had this happen :/

Now I just need to re figure out how to backup my stock rom on rom manager. I need to do that if I'm going to flash a custom rom onto my NS4G correct? I've never actually gone that far with my phones lol.

Okay lol hold on so just go make sure you
1. Unlocked the bootloader right?
2. Flashed a custom recovery (clockworkmod)?
3. Flashed superuser for root access?
4. Now you have a stock rooted ROM?
If you have/did all that then yeah you could backup your stock rooted ROM, you don't need to back it up but its helpful just incase you mess something you could always restore it to start all over
And you could backup any ROM you install incase you didn't know, just remember when you install different ROMS make sure to do a proper full wipe which includes data/factory reset/wiping DALVIK cache, and formatting system and boot in the "mount" option in CWM. And now I think your good lol

Unlocked Bootloader? If I boot in fastboot it says Unlocked. Is this what you mean?
I have ClockWorkMod, but I haven't done anything with it.

Yeah if it says unlocked your good to go. The super user.zip you first flashed won't be needed once you flash different ROMS, it was only needed for stock because you didn't install a ROM you just unlocked the boot loader and super user just gave you root access that didn't come with stock.
Yeah backup your stock ROM JUST in case you encounter a boot loop so you can just restore and start over, you don't need to back up CM9 that's completely your choice if you want . Its convenient though if you like CM9 but still like to flash other ROMS that way you can just go back if you miss CM9 without doing the whole setup process.
And a full wipe is
Data/factory reset
Then wipe dalvik under "advanced"
Then wipe system and boot under the "mount" option in CWM

The hidden status bar and bottom menu hidden is amazing. I also like the inverted G-Mail and Facebook. Is this all separate from the Nightly ROM?

Finally was able to succesfully root my phone last night, and now I am wondering how to actually flash a custom ROM. I figured I'd start with Cyanogen since its the most popular and seems like a good starting point. So, I have a few questions.
1. How do I install the custom ROM? (Cyanogen in this case) Also, is this process the same regardless of what android version I have? (I'm currently on the stock 4.1.1 OTA)
2. Should I install a custom kernel? If so, is it the same process? Also, is my data wiped just the same as with flashing a custom ROM?
3. If I make a backup with Titanium Backup, will I simply be able to access/redownload my app data it if I redownload Titanium after I flash the ROM?
Any and all help is appreciated!

I'm sure everyone has their own advice, but I would say first thing you'll need is ROM Manager
Download the ROM you want and place it on your sdcard. Use Titanium Backup to backup your applications, and then restart your phone in Recovery Mode. When in recovery mode, make a backup by going to "Backup and Restore" > backup. Then do a factory reset and wipe your cache. Install the new rom and enjoy the addiction

Also...be careful making sure that any kernel flashed is compatible with the ROM you are flashing. If not you can brick your phone.

[Q] Problems restoring backup/installing ROMs

Hi Folks, I hope this is posted in the right forum and sorry if I've missed seeing something similar already here.
I have a rooted Verizon GSIII on which I have been flashing custom ROMs and restoring nandroid backups without any problems for a while now (most recently I've been on Paranoid Android). Today I decided to try out Carbon ROM. I generated a nandroid backup using TWRP, then downloaded the ROM (the most recent nightly) and Gapps zip files using GooManager and flashed these after doing a factory reset. After rebooting the phone it seemed to start up OK... but it got as far as trying to find the network, which it unable to do. After selecting the skip option I then tried to sign in to my WiFi, but the keyboard didn't show up for me to type in the password. So I figured I'd cut my losses and just reboot into recovery and restore my PA backup. I was able to reboot into recovery and restore the backup but the PA backup pretty much did the same thing the carbon ROM did... just looped trying to find the network.
So... I'm not sure what went wrong or what to do next. Any suggestions???
I am able to boot the phone into recovery, but I'm afraid to start messing around too much without help as I'm no expert!
I do have the most recent nandroid backup and several earlier ones that did restore OK on my computer. Is there a way to flash any of these to the phone or to go back to stock?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wipe catche dalvik factory reset then flash fresh batch of rom and gaaps if that works well getting tru start up then flash ur backup thats what i did.. If that dnt work then u gotta go tru odin back to stock

I have a couple of questions, been digging around xda and the web and found some conflicting answers...
1) Does a Nandroid backup also back up the kernel? I'm thinking about dabbling with some custom kernels, but don't want to potentially mess things up as well as have an easy way back to the stock kernel if I don't like the custom one for one reason or another.
2) What would happen if I made a Nandroid backup from recovery, did a full wipe (/data, /system, /sdcard, caches), rebooted then restored from the Nandroid backup?
I'm still pretty new to all this but I've done some reading and a wee bit of flashing & rooting on Nexus devices and the HP Touchpad. I also have an old TF101 that I'd really like to tinker with as well.

I don't know much about kernel but I do know that Nandroid backup backups everything exactly where the phone is.
That means if you do factory reset and restore Nandroid backup it will restore everything from the day you made the Nandroid backup.
I hope it clarifies everything.

Let me answer your questions.
1. When you do a nandroid backup, it backs up everything. Including the kernel.
2. If you nandroid backup, factory reset your device then restore your nandroid backup. Your device will return to the same state you had it previously. You will have all your content, files and settings. However if you do a backup, then factory reset and reboot, your device will be wiped of everything but it will boot up. As if the device was just turned in upon purchase. Also note, if you do a backup, then wipe your device (factory reset) you will not lose your backup.
Just note, if you ever flash a ROM, even if the developer states there is no issues. MAKE A BACKUP, sometimes things go wrong.

I was a bit confused about 2) because I read somewhere that if you make a nandroid backup of a stock ROM, then install a custom ROM (non-Stock based ie CM, PA or OmniROM) you must flash the stock ROM again before you can restore the nandroid backup, or else restoring the nandroid backup will not work. Is this true?
Consider the following example, say I:
-flash TWRP on my device and root
-make nandroid of stock, rooted ROM
-wipe /data, /system, /sdcard and caches and reboot back into recovery
-ADB push a non-stock custom ROM .zip file and flash the custom ROM
-decide I want to return to stock, rooted ROM after a while
-Boot into TWRP, then wipe /data, /system, /sdcard and caches and reboot back into recovery
-ADB push my original stock, rooted nandroid backup to /sdcard while in reocvery
-restore nandroid backup
What would be the outcome of the above example? I'm very curious...but I'd like some advice before attempting something like this myself as I'm still kinda new to all this
BTW I'm now comfortable flashing back to stock using fastboot and the google facotry image to restore a Nexus device so I now know how to do this in case things go south. I'm just curious if this would work on a device where returning to a full stock state isn't so easy.

No you don't need to install anything to get back to the previous state. So if you had a stock rooted ROM, then backed it up. But you decided to flash, let's say. Cyanogenmod but you wished to return back to stock, you don't need to flash stock ROM, all you have to do is just wipe data and restore your backup.
And for the example.
The outcome would be, you would be resulted with a stock, rooted rom.
