Apps that use gps can't find location - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All the apps I have that use GPS don't seem to be working. I have GPS logger, GPS Status and NOAA Weather. All of them can not get a GPS lock. Any one know why?

[HOWTO] Check your GPS signal

1) Install GPS Status & Toolbox
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2&feature=search_result
2) Run it
3) See how long it takes to get a location. Location appears in the spinning area under "mag field". Seems to take 9 to 11 more satellites to lock and works best outdoors.
Why do you need this app? Using Google Maps will not be accurate, as it uses Cell tower and wifi for triangulation (in addition to GPS). GPS Status & Toolbox uses GPS only. So while maps may have a location, GPS may not even be locked on whatsoever.
If GPS is not locked on, things like Maps Navigation and TeleNav won't work.
Took about a min to hit 8 locked on...turned wifi on and connected and locked in 20 seconds with 6 sats.... hmmmm will test more..
Both tested outside

Check out the slow gps fix in the dev forum. My GPS has always been pretty good but after changing the SUPL server in the hidden menu I get lock way faster than I already was.

GPS lock but no navigation: multiple roms

Never really managed to get GPS to work on my handset. Tried updating my agps data but still had no luck.
Figured it was from issue (was running runymeed) but have just put on virtuous beta 6 and tested it.
I get steady GPS icon (ie not flashing) and used GPS test app which reported 3 satellites.
Wondered if its issue with handset or navigation. How may lock on's does it need to determine location?
Also wondered if its its radio issue. Can anyone suggest decent one to work in UK (provider is vodaphone)

Works fine on mine. I'm with TalkMobile, which uses Vodafone's network.
I have used Sygic, but now just use Google Maps for my navigation needs.
Baseband: 20.4801.30.0822U_3822.10.08.04_M
Run FasterFix and set your GPS to UK pool.
Other than that make sure that you reboot the phone with GPS enabled (sometimes it has problems if you don't).
You've got an app "Faster Fix" which you can found in the Market.
This app speed up your gps, and get faster GPS-Fixes using FasterFix.
It's a good help, but you must be root.
Try this

[Q] GPS works... except in other apps

I applied the new baseband and I get instant GPS locks when using Maps or GPS Status. However, when I try running apps, like MapMyRun or Cardiotrainer, they complain that they can't get a GPS lock. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this or what I could do to make these apps work as well as Maps and GPS Status?

What GPS do not use GPS satellite?

Is there any gps map/app that uses handphone data and do not require use of gps satellite?
I need it so that when I reach places that I cannot connect to gps satellite, I can use the handphone data plan for gps.
Thanks
You can choose how the map/gps app locate you in the location settings. Google maps is usually more than adequate for me as a map/gps app.

If I have unticked "GPS satellites" can I still use Google map like a GPS? Does it have turn by turn prompt? I think it is called Google navigation or something?
I am using in Singapore.
Thanks for all help. I am a newbie in smartphone.
Hmm I think they will probably prompt you to enable it and then revert to your data plan after that. I live in Singapore and personally, I've never been successful when trying to use the gps satellite here even in an open area and usually have to revert to my data plan. For the other question, I can't really say much since I don't use Google navigation and instead opting to manually find my location in Google maps every few minutes.

Do mean unsuccessful to use gps satellite for google maps? Do you mean you need to untick "GPS satellites" so that Google maps can work? If i understand correctly, you only use Google maps to find how to got from point A to point B.
Yeap, that what I meant. Google maps will usually tell me 'My location is unavailable' when I use gps only and I have to switch on my data plan. You don't really need to switch off the gps for google maps to work, its just that switching on gps would waste the battery since I can't reach the gps satellite and yes, thats what I usually use it as. I use the directions settings in the app instead of google navigation

GPS fix

For several weeks now, the compass was broken, but I could live with the view from top at the maps. Now it won't even find my GPS. Also, when I activate to check in to a location to Instagram, it shows a different location than where I am, and I have to use the search. How can I fix it? I live in Greece.

I am facing issues with GPS as well. I am facing issues with Google navigation. GPS doesn't fix. It takes too much time. I used GPS fix app which fixes GPS in 1-2 min. Still Google map takes 15-20 mins to figure out where I am on the map and start navigation correctly. Is it a ROM problem? Currently i am using resurrection remix. When I was using Blisspop, navigation was slower than the car speed. Means few mins after I take a turn, Google map would instruct me to take a turn. Any idea what could be the problem? I recently did a clean flash. But that didn't fix the issue.
Missed one more point, after 15-20 mins GPS locks and Google navigation starts working. But frequently it would announce GPS signal lost. To test, I kept running my nexus 4 in parallel. Nexus 4 locks GPS instantly and on the same route never losses GPS signal.

Try GPS Status to calibrate the compass and Faster GPS to set your continent and region.
