I've tried googling couldn't get anything. Was wondering if Ipurchased this phone from the playstore (I live in Canada) will it come with the unlock code? Can I just insert a sim card and it will start working or do I have to root or purchase the unlock code?
It comes unlocked will work with any Canadian carrier right out of the box

No Nexus have ever been locked even when sold by a carrier.

So how do you know if it is unlocked? Is that like a clean ESN for CDMA phones? If you buy a phone on contract, is it automatically locked until the contract is up?

If you are buying a phone that is sold by a USA Carrier its got about a 95% is LOCKED. You will know when you put the sim in, if you get ERROR SIM LOCKED, Please Enter Unlock Code, it's locked. Otherwise if it lets you into the phone your golden. Locked/Unlocked is not even close to ESN being clear/bad. Just means carriers have the phone locked to them, you can buy an unlock code for almost any GSM phone for $20 or less
So the lock is just specific to a carrier and not a user?

Correct. So that you have to come to them to get that specific phone
Some phones can be unlocked via tools you can find here on XDA other phones require some bigger equipment and you typically have to go on ebay or a similar site to get your unlock code based on your IMEI number

You'll need to have an unlock code. This you can buy online for about 35 bucks
Then you insert a foreign sim card and enter the unlock code.

Sim unlock for Rogers Nexus S
Ok I am trying to figure out where I can get my hands on a free SIM unlock code for my Nexus S currently on the Rogers network.
Anyone have any ideas or advice that would point me in the right direction really not in the mood to pay for it. Figure I would be able to do it myself some how.
Thanks
I purchased a SIM unlock code from cellunlocker and I have a question. Can I unlock the phone without a "foreign" SIM? I don't know anyone with T-Mobile so I can't "borrow a SIM.
Why do you want the phone unlocked if you don't have another carrier's sim card?
Anyway, cellunlocker (at least for my old phone) emailed me directions along with the code. IIRC, I stuck my AT&T sim (I was using a T-mobile phone and going to AT&T) into my phone and it came up with a message saying that the phone was locked. On that screen I just needed to enter the special number they provided and it worked.

because I'm traveling. I was hoping to do the unlock ahead of time
I don't think it will give you the prompt without putting a different sim in. That's the only time I've ever seen the option.

I had a skyrocket and tried to unlock it via their instructions but it would always give me an error. The only way i unlocked it was inserting a sprint international sim into it and then and only then would the phone ask me for a unlock code

They're not locked if you buy it from Play or other non-carrier supplier. They could potentially be locked if supplied from a carrier and has been known amongst previous nexus devices.
They aren't locked at all, that I'm aware of. I bought mine thru Sprint, but after changing Sim cards and rebooting, it works on att and tmobile

Confusion can arise because of the word unlock. On nexus, unlocking refers to the boot loader which allows you to change system files and root.
But as said all nexus 5 are sim-unlocked from the get go.
Hi,
I can't find an answer here so i will ask my question.
Is it possible to unlock the network (sim lock) ?
Because if i understand well, root and unlocked the bootloader will not remove the sim lock ?
thanks by advance
As far as I know, the nexus 5 is not sim locked, even if you buy it from your carrier store...

Nexus 5 comes sim unlocked.. I'm on sprint and sprint CDMA fones even when u unlock the sim, will not work on any other gsm network like t mobile or att in the US... But my sprint nexus 5 works even on att or t mobile... So basically to answer ur question just insert any sim and it will connect to that network...

If your n5 is sim locked, its the first ever one that is sim locked because every other n5 here is NOT sim locked.
Put your sim in and test for yourself.
I can confirm that a Nexus 5 bought and activated with Sprint becomes Sim locked. I have tried several different sims with several carriers. It will not read any of them. I'm stuck with no service on my Nexus 5 unless I go back to Sprint which I will not do. Not a big deal to me, just an annoyance. Sprint just has crap for coverage and isn't really much cheaper anymore.
That isn't right because I got my phone through Sprint and it works on American GSM just fine. What exactly is it doing?

No Nexus should be sold locked. It's against policy. Get on Sprints case and make them unlock it FREE
