Never SIM unlocked a phone before - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I purchased a SIM unlock code from cellunlocker and I have a question. Can I unlock the phone without a "foreign" SIM? I don't know anyone with T-Mobile so I can't "borrow a SIM.

Why do you want the phone unlocked if you don't have another carrier's sim card?
Anyway, cellunlocker (at least for my old phone) emailed me directions along with the code. IIRC, I stuck my AT&T sim (I was using a T-mobile phone and going to AT&T) into my phone and it came up with a message saying that the phone was locked. On that screen I just needed to enter the special number they provided and it worked.

because I'm traveling. I was hoping to do the unlock ahead of time

I don't think it will give you the prompt without putting a different sim in. That's the only time I've ever seen the option.

OK thanks.

Just trim down a old sim. Worked for me.

I used my old Verizon sim
You can go to a store and buy a micro sim just to do this, its like 5 bucks

I cut an old t-mobile sim card. Instructions are all over youtube.
I used this guy on ebay and had the unlock code in minutes.

Thanks for all the information. Very helpful.

permanent

I had a skyrocket and tried to unlock it via their instructions but it would always give me an error. The only way i unlocked it was inserting a sprint international sim into it and then and only then would the phone ask me for a unlock code

So how do you know if it is unlocked? Is that like a clean ESN for CDMA phones? If you buy a phone on contract, is it automatically locked until the contract is up?

If you are buying a phone that is sold by a USA Carrier its got about a 95% is LOCKED. You will know when you put the sim in, if you get ERROR SIM LOCKED, Please Enter Unlock Code, it's locked. Otherwise if it lets you into the phone your golden. Locked/Unlocked is not even close to ESN being clear/bad. Just means carriers have the phone locked to them, you can buy an unlock code for almost any GSM phone for $20 or less
So the lock is just specific to a carrier and not a user?

Correct. So that you have to come to them to get that specific phone
Some phones can be unlocked via tools you can find here on XDA other phones require some bigger equipment and you typically have to go on ebay or a similar site to get your unlock code based on your IMEI number

How to enter subsidy unlock code on G2x without an unsupported sim?

Hello, I got an unlock code for my g2x through tmobile, and the instructions say to boot it up with a non-Tmobile sim inserted. Does anyone know how to get to unlock input screen without a non-Tmobile sim available? thank you for your time.
(I read some people advised to dial #073887* to bring up the screen, but no luck. I guess this is for att phone only?)
I can't remember off hand but a google search can find it, it is same process as the O2x. However when I tried to enter my unlock code with the T-Mobile SIM in it, it didn't work. I needed a non T-Mobile SIM for it to work.

Try this method
http://www.lg-phones.org/how-to-unlock-the-lg-optimus-gt540.html
it worked with my Optimus T and I am sure it will work with G2x as well (but I have to wait for a couple of months for free unlocked code from T-Mobile).
note:
you MUST input from dialer
2945#*999#
while #*999# is G2x model number (P999)
do have have to replace "540" to "999"? I think i just going to ask someone to let me an att simcard (All my family and friends are using tmobile/sprint....it's hard to get an att simcard for me....*sigh*)

Yes, you MUST use 999 instead of 540 because #*xxx# is your phone model.

well i need an at&t micro sim card so i can boot up my phone and it will ask me to enter the unlock code that tmobile provided me so i can use my phone for at&t now.
Get a sim card cutter and adapter from amazon/ebay. they are like 2 bucks.
Use a sim cutter to make it into a micro sim. Or if you want to risk cutting it yourself then you can do it too. I did that with my t-mobile sim card and cut it with a pair of scissors . Why would you use the One S on AT&T when you can get the One X running on their network. I am a little confused what you are trying to do though
cut it yourself or go onto the carrier website and order one
here in the UK the sim cards are free

Amazon sells AT&T pre paid sims, but you'll probably end up having to buy some minutes with it. But, then at least you can verify it works once unlocked.

I'm on a TMO plan. I got an unlock code, went on ebay and got an AT&T micro sim for $3 shipped. Swapped sims and entered unlock code. Removed the AT&T sim and reinserted the TMO sim.

Could anyone who has used an unlock code to successfully unlock their phone take a look at this thread and see if you can help?
We are close to getting a free sim unlock hack for all but need a few contributors for testing purposes.
Thanks!

which website to carrier unlock LG p925g?

Hey everyone,
A friend from canada just gave me his old p925g phone that is locked on rogers and I've been looking online but there doesn't seem to be a free way to sim unlock this phone. Many people seem to have had some success unlocking this phone through some websites by paying and I was wondering if you guys could share which website you used?
There are many websites just by googling this, but I've never used this kind of service and I'm quite sure many websites are scams so I was hoping someone here could confirm a successful unlock with the name of the service used.
Thanks!

There was a cheaper service but couldn't find.
@arsen4oo
Thanks for the link, cheaper then $1.99?? this price is already good for me!
Have you personally used this? How did it go? you bought this and then they sent you a letter to your home with the unlock code?
I'll look for the link and post it, I already tried a Site and it took no more than 5mins to receive the code via email.

I still have one more question, I saw this on the website: "You will also need a sim card from the network that are currently mobile phone is working. Sim card will be needed when you will entering unlock code to Your phone."
Did you use it to unlock? I'm in France and I don't have the sim card. My friend cancelled his plan at rogers and now lives in japan so there's no way to get the sim card.
Well what it means is that you need a sim that actually works when inserting the code. I used the sim that worked typed the code then my phone was ready to accept any sim card.

well... it seems like i wont be able to unlock it then, being in france its gonna be hard to find anyone that has a rogers sim card...
thanx for the help!

You don't need Rogers sim card to unlock Rogers phone when inserting the code. You're supposed to use non-Rogers sim to get that locked screen to insert the code. And I don't think you need a working sim to unlock, as long as not a Rogers sim. I used one my old overseas sim from asia trip to unlocked my rogers phone

Rogers Unlocking Help Requested

Hi there,
I recently bought a cheap Rogers HTC One X in mint condition off my local classifieds ($300). It is locked to Rogers and I need to use it on Telus. What is the best way to unlock it? Is there any way to unlock it for free? I am not experienced at all with Android, I'm coming from an iPhone but would really like to get this working because I'd love to get rid of it and just use my One X.
Please help
No free options yet. You would have to buy an unlock code online

Or you could just go.to the carriers store ans get it unlocked. Tell then you have family over seas and you're buying it as a birthday present. Most of the carriers will unlock it for free.

Actually after an amount of time with good standing they are these days.
Though one like Telus charges 50, so its not worth it versus a few bucks online.

Will using an unlock code permanently unlock the phone? Also, will the unlock be removed by changing ROMs, unlocking the bootloader, etc? Is the unlock code a one-time use kind of thing? How do they even get these unlock codes?

Unlocking your phone unlocks the branding on your phone. Like if you have AT&T and you put as T-Mobile SIM card in, it won't work. If it was unlocked and you did that, it would work.
If you changed your Rom, no. Each phone has their own imei number, therefore it only has one unlock code. As for it being a one time use, no. And if you unlocked your bootloader, no.
The unlock code will perm unlock your phone so you can use it internationally and with different carriers as long as they use SIM cards(and if that card fits in your phone).

Thanks everyone for the replies so far, I really appreciate it! :good: I have only a few last questions before my problem is resolved:
1.) Where is the best place/website to get an unlock code from (in terms of price, success, etc) ?
2.) How do I enter in the unlock code into my phone?
